TWRP only internal storage shows in PC - Moto G4 Questions & Answers

Hi,
Just bought a G4, installed latest TWRP 3.0.2 & rooted.
I formatted my SD card as internal but when connected to PC whilst in TWRP only internal storage of 8GB available is shown.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Move apps to sdcard

I am running MM (stock, unrooted, w/ unlocked BL) and have and SD card installed as portable storage (i had tried using it as internal a month or so ago and got completely screwed up for a few weeks, so am back to leaving it as portable).
In the past - before i formatted it as internal - i believe I had the option to move apps to the sdcard. I definitely had that option after formatting as internal. Now, I am not seeing that option at all. Do I need to do something special to allow moving of apps to the SD Card?
I am going to storage--> internal storage --> apps and scrolling down the list. When I select an app, i am expecting to see the option to move it to sd card. It's not there for any of the apps on the phone.
Don't think you can use move to SD on moto. Use something like link2sd or adaptive storage.

Thanks- so, you're saying that i probably am just remembering things incorrectly and likely the only time i previously moved the apps to SD on my XPE was when i had the SD card formatted as internal storage?

Not sure what you had but I tried that myself and got error that I can't move to SD on this phone. Forgot what the error was though.

Its a change from lollipop to marshmallow. Lollipop allows the moving of some apps to the SD card natively, marshmallow does not. Every app I've tried for app2sd doesn't work in marshmallow either.

I've had some SD Card problems as well, does that mean Migrate Data only moves personal non-app files to the other storage?
Using AppMgrIII to move apps to SD card
Running MM stock, not rooted. Using AppMgrIII and formatting the SD card as internal (really key here), I have moved many apps to the SD card. AppMgrIII tells you which can be moved, and then you go to the app, click on storage and move the app to the SD card. Some work on the first try, and some take two tries for some reason. I must have about 40 apps on my SD card. The only one that didn't work after moving was the Amazon Shopping app. It worked, but took forever to come up. Moved it back to internal and it's fine.

While this is a good work around, this breaks basic functionality of the SD card by itself. When you format it as internal, you cannot put it in a card reader and use it in your pc, which for me, is essential, especially when copying 20+ gigs at a time (128GB card). Also, if rooted and custom recovery, recovery will not read the card either.

[SD card problem] External and internal storage

Hello, Now I don't really know what's going on cause i'm going crazy with this phone, eveytime I inserted sd card it asked the partition card and internal sd card and when I chose the external ones I have no idea why it doesn't read my sd card like for example I wanna transfer my file via airdroid or wanna restore an app via Titanium backup or play an NDS game it just read only the internal storage even though it shows on ES file explore (I tried the internal ones and it format my SD card, and S did put all the files back in place but it didn't help, the es file explore in photo was before I put my files back, by the way), my phone just doesn't read my sd card, it's like it just work as a one way storage, when I was using a Sony, this doesn't happens what so ever.
Does anyone knows how to fix this problem of mine, please help me. I took some pictures to make proves :crying::crying:
I'm terribly sorry for my English, English is not my primary language.

In titanium backup, open the preferences menu then choose backup folder location. Choose Storage provider (click to change). Then pick DocumentProvider storage, select the SD card on the left menu then press Select at the bottom right corner
go to settings>>storage>>click on external sdcard>>top corner 3dots>>settings>> format
then move media to sdcard.
Your SD card is showing in the file manager. You've 32gb sd card right? "FD89-1CE6" is your sd card. For titanium backup you need go to TB settings and set the backup directory to SD CARD ( FD89-1CE6)

No it's not tough. U just need to flash the right version of xposed through TWRP recovery and then Install the xposed app n you're good to go.

Yeah, Thank you very much, i just did it last night, kinda having trouble with the superSU at first though, I tried to patched Titanium Backup on lucky patcher and it kept saying that I need to root my device, so i had to reflash superSU again. Thank god it went through. Now I having trouble with the internal SD card, I couldn't get it my play store to install app to my sd card or to re-direct my app to read file in my Sd card, for example I installed Chaos ring 3, I had to move all the file from my sd card to internal, it's knilling my internal storage TT^TT . Does anyone have a solution for that, please let me know.... I think everybody have the same problem though, does anyone know how to fix this solution? :crying::crying:
Thank you

In Android 6.0, once you format ur external sd card as internal it becomes a part of ur internal memory and functions as internal one(the external SD card won't show up in file managers). Hence the phone decides where your app is installed either the real internal memory or the now formatted SD card working as internal memory.
If you don't format it as internal memory. The apps won't install on external SD card and you can't move the apps to external SD card.

No you can't coz the data on your sd card will be encripted n you won't be able to read it on your computer via card reader. I'd suggest you to keep your sd card as "portable device" if you want to transfer data via card reader.

As long as you aren't using adopted storage it should be fine. I do all my backups to sd.

One query about adoptable storage in Nougat

Guyz one small help. 2day i formatted my sd card as internal storage on my g4+ then I had to copy all the files that were present before formatting sd as internal (i had taken backup before formatting) but when I connected my ph to pc after formatting I was able to see only phone storage so I copied everything in it having no other optionz then in ph storage settings I kept those files to be moved to sd card so it's been around more than 20 minutes moving is stuck at 27% ! What should I do now?? Ow crap i can't even post the screenshot as the system is detecting the storage is busy

When you format it as internal, it will not show your SD card because it's considered as internal storage itself.
That's literally what the function does.
For eg you have 32GB as phone internal storage and if you formatted your 16GB card as internal you would have 32+16 GB as your total storage.
And yes it would show you as Internal Storage as the SD card is now considered part of it.

If you don't have a high quality sdcard with U3 (not just high read but also high write speeds) then it make take a long time. I've just done this with my wife's Moto G4 and I gave up. It started moving but hung. I ordered a PNY Elite sdcard with 90Mb/s write speed. That worked much better and it moved stuff to the internal formatted sdcard.
One thing that is important is that it takes some time before it reports the entire internal storage that includes both phone plus sdcard storage. A reboot will help as well to have the sdcard be recognized by running apps.
That is just my experience. Your problem may be different.
The usual junk speed (or even normal speed) cards won't cut it as adapted storage. You need a card with minimum "UHS-I Speed Class 3". That's usually 90MB/s read and 80MB/s write average speeds. See the attached table.
The internal memory on the phones is much more performant than the average SD, that's why is more expensive when buy it in the phone (like when switching from 16 to 32 to 64GB internal, if everything else would stay equal).
PS: Some of the cheap chinese cards that are sold on eBay are really bad fakes, or just plain rejected cards from real manufacturers (meant to be destroyed but stolen and re-sold) and that storage will fail almost immediately.
I had this same issue. I sent my old SHIELD tablet back for RMA and got a new one. I got a new official samsung SD card, popped it in and formatted it to internal. So when I did that, it didn't combine the SD card with internal storage like it was supposed to. It just disappeared. 7.0 gives you the option to format it back to portable storage. So I did that and the SD card is usable again, but as separate storage :-/
something is definitely wrong.
