what's old is new again - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 General

I'll bet there will be lots of N7 users, like myself, coming back to the N4. It's especially attractive now that we have bootloader access...
See you in a couple weeks.

I'm back
& running kitkat 4.4 .....Is marshmallow available for my rooted note4 developer edition. Was really liking it on my n7. So sad i had to go backwards.

MM is out for retail. I am assuming it came to Dev as well. If not there are some great TW based ROMs that work really well.

MM 6.01, factory reset and a new battery equals Note 4.5. In no hurry now to get another device. The Note 4 performs better than my MXPE, since no funky throttling like with the 808. Battery life is a few hours better than the MXPE.
The biggie though is signal reception is 10dBm better than my former Note 7 in weaker signal areas. Huge.

Would like a Note 7 ROM to use on my Note 4. Still using my N7, but that will not be for much longer. Gonna have to go back to my Note 4 soon. I really like Always On Display.

[Q] Experiences with GNote coming from GNexus?

Hi Guys, I just bought a Galaxy Note (yay!)...I should have it by Friday. The reason for getting the Note was that my Galaxy Nexus presented signal drops and I had to keep it stock if I wanted solid signal, and well with the Nexus what's the point on having it stock?
Now I absolutely LOVE the Galaxy Nexus, it's the best phone I've had by far...and to tell you the truth I am a little sad to let it go, I love the fact that you can do almost whatever you want with it, it's easy to root, and to mod. I've read that there are some troubles flashing custom ROMs on the Note, but I'm pretty sure that I'll figure it out once I have the Note in my hand, or hands really.
So I wanted to know about experiences of you guys that made the switch from the Galaxy Nexus to the Galaxy Note, are you happy with it? do you miss stock ICS? How do you like Touchwiz?
Thanks!
i have both. i found samsung's gingerbread/touchwiz overlay intolerable so i barely used it for the firsy couple of months. was using the Gnex heavily. i couldn't bring myself to sell the Note becase of the magnificent screen, battery and camera - it had potential beyond each and every phone in the market combined.
Then along came CM9 for the Note and now i can't put it down. It's now has the best of everything - screen, battery life camera - and nothing in the market can come close to offering what it does. the overall experience with the screen really is on another level entirely.
The Gnex is going to be sold soon. The phone was good but the battery was an absoute joke. The Note (now with CM9) betters it in every possible way.
Omersak, can i ask you which Cyanogen ROM you are using, i can find a few in the development section.
And what is the + over an APK ROM ?
@TS
I have my note a few days now, i was doubting between nexus and note, the nexus looks amazing, but it has older and slower hardware.
The Note have great hardware, great screen, and the size is just perfect.
I rooted the Note the second day (reading the forums here all day does strange things with a man )
Um do you mean AOKP?
It stands for Android Open Kang Project
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/21583-what-is-aokp-and-features-list/
I can't explain it myself but found that link.

LOL.... I was going to say I rooted mine on Day 1 within the first few minutes, but after reading your post I'll keep my mouth shut...
Re the OT's question:
I was using the Nexus 1 for almost 2 years, and jumped on the G Nexus first moment it came out. Loved it! Reading my Kindle books was now such an enjoyable experience with the 4.65" screen. Then I started becoming greedy. Why not an EVEN BIGGER screen?
After only about a week, I made up my mind to move to the Note (after many many pocketability tests in the store), and I've been in seventh heaven ever since. What I love about the Note:
- bigger screen (doh...)
- Removable SD!! This was a biggie - having a 32Gb SD card in addition to the 16Gb on board is FREEDOM! Very good for storing all those huge Nandroid backups!!!
- better battery life
- faster (sure, many ppl are skeptical about benchmarks, but 4700+ on Quadrant?!! )
I missed ICS initially, but Gingerbread (with CheckROM and Franco kernel) has been working tremendously well for me, and better (smoother and better battery) than all the ICS ROMs I had tried, including the stock rom that just came out.
Rocket ICS looks promising though, so just waiting for v2 before giving it another go.
Enjoy your Note - you'll never look back, for sure!

[Q] How is your note 3 holding up?

I currently own a HTC One M8 and thinking about going to the note 3. Because I love big screens and a decent camera on a phone, none of which the M8 has.
So I just wanna know how you guys are finding it ?

Ive owned this device for almost 6 months now and I love it more today than yesterday.
Seriously though, the only flaw I see on the note 3 is its camera in low light. Other than that, a simple installation of nova launcher and your note 3 would be as smooth as silk. No other issues whatsoever.
I've used many, many Android phones in my time, and the Note 3 is the best. Bar none.

I'm a big htc fan and thought I'd never jump ship but I did to the 2 and now the 3 which I've had for 5 months. I still love it and would buy it again.

I had the s4 for barely a month and I was going crazy at how awful it felt in my hand. Got a good offer to jump to the note 3 and did so in a heartbeat. Dont regret it even one bit! Although still plastic it feels much better. I used nova launcher mostly and recently rooted and jumped to cm11 and the phone works great! I dont game much, a quick session if im bored or a new fun game comes out, but that lasts for only a day or two. I have noticed a slight battery drop on cm11. Its still in "beta" so im not to worried about that. But on touchwizz it could last a long time on H+ data. Just couldnt stand tw, its so ugly!
I'm coming from S4, and camera here is that much better, escpecially night mod! Love it.. And everything else.. Two sim model rocks.. I think for now dual sim note 3 is the best device you can find on market. So go ahead, buy one, fck htc.. i've had M7, and didn't like it.. liked the look, but not their android and camera for example

Been a nexus fan, used to root devices as soon as I got home from the shop. The Knox flag is a major issue for those of us that like to toy around with different ROMs and tweaks, but the device itself is spectacular. I'm very pleased by the build quality, light and quality materials, very, very, very smooth. 8 days uptime and still devouring everything I throw at it. Battery life is more then decent and the overall experience is a joy. Buy it.

The only weakpoint of the Note 3 is the outdated TW version, hope Sammy will bring the S5 TW to other devices too

Are you a bit obsessed with this S5 TW being brought to Note 3 thing ?
I don't like it at all, the S5 TW.
Just sayin.
And to contribute to the thread... Of course, go for the Note 3. I own it since its launch, and I couldn't tell you nothing bad about it. The screen size and the super amoled are perfect. The camera rules too, a bunch of options. And for me, having the Spen (the reason I bought the phone), it's even more of a joy to use the phone.
I'm running a custom stock kitkat rom, visually changed some things with Wanam xposed and I love it.

Lord no, not obsessed. What i meant more is the bloatware that is included with the Sammy roms. Installing Echo rom as we speak with all the S5 UI looks

I miss my rooted note 3 and my rooted g3, but there is no comparison to me. The extra features, specs, smoother and better battery life. Not to mention the more premium look of the Note 4.
Note 4 hands down for me. Opinions will vary though...

I just bought a mint condition note 4 from swappa a week ago and I am loving the device. I switched from the MDK unlocked-bootloader Verizon S4, and I can't say I miss it. I loved the fact that I could customize everything and change ROMs at a moment's notice. However, this device's speed, feel, and S PEN (greatest accessory ever made) are just amazing. I am coping with running a completely stock Touchwiz/Verizon ROM, and I must admit I really like it. There were many times that the ROMs I'd run on my S4 wouldn't be updated as quickly to the newest TW android version or the device would just behave unstably due to customizations or non-TW ROMs. I also realized with my S4 and this Note 4 that I really enjoy TW and the thought put into optimizing Samsung's hardware (especially the S Pen). You'd could lose a lot of practical features on an AOSP ROM on this device that I use. I miss adaway and TiB for sure, but that's okay. There are a lot of great devs on XDA who make awesome apps that don't require root. All-in-all, this is a great choice (hopefully Verizon will give us our bootloaders back some day - not holding my breath though). Hopefully one day Google will make a Nexus device with a stylus - then the real fun will begin.

Suggestions on new phone from note 3?

So I want to upgrade from my note 3 I think, but not really sure what out there would be a good upgrade. A must is the phone has to be rootable, preferably bootloader unlocked. I wouldnt mind something like the Nexus 6p where I could use the same phone on maybe sprint, but I want to make sure Im making the best fiscal decision. I do enjoy the s-pen a lot, but I know the note 5 has no root or unlocked bootloader. So what would be a phone where I would see improved battery life/snapiness of the phone, as well as better signal (I notice that newer iPhones my family have get great signal when Im getting very poor, so thinking it may have to do with older phone). Would love some help
That's the point, nothing new is going to have root or a bootloader for awhile, especially with Samsung, since they apparently don't like it that we have this access, as it is, but in December when my upgrade is available I will be going to the Note 5, hands down, and will wait for root and possible boot loader like I did for the Note 3
I just upgraded to a Nexus 6p and really like it so far. I've only been using it for 24 hours so I'm still in that new phone phase but being objective as I can be:
Pros:
Speed: I've installed about 100 apps, rooted stock rom, xposed, everything runs great and fast. (I wasn't a touch wiz and debloated my note 3 to get it to run as close to stock as possible.)
Screen: The bump in resolution to 1440 is pretty nice coming from the Note 3
Sound: Dual Front Facing Speakers are Great. I installed Viper4Android to further tweak the sound but it's great. Why this isn't the standard is beyond me. Noticeable upgrade from the Note 3
Updates: Having monthly security updates is nice. Also the ability to install Android N if I wanted to in beta form
Camera: Nice upgrade here as well. Pictures are noticeably clearer than the Note 3.
Cons:
Nexus 6p get's hot quick. Not concerning hot but it is noticeable.
Lack of expandable storage. I am really regretting getting the 32gb model. Between installing all my apps, backing everything up with titanium backup, and doing a nand backup, I've used a big chunk of the storage in less than 24 hours. Only have 8gb currently to work with.
Battery Life. It's just OK. Almost not a con, but definitely not a pro. I feel like when it was New my Note 3 had better battery life. It was also nice swapping my second battery if I wanted to at anytime.

Previous Phone and Why Note 7

S7 edge and the curved on note 7 is better
S7 Edge, and because why not. New stuff is always fun, and I typically upgrade phones a lot.
Nexus 6p to note 7 because I like new phones
HTC One M8 to Note 7 because the M8 is wearing out and the Note 7 looks to be an awesome device. However I'm a bit uneasy about not having the ability to root, not being able to restore apps borked by updates, and not being able to TWRP backup the device once I have it set up the way I like. Hoping the device is good enough that no root will seem like a minor trade off.
Nexus 6 to Note 7. Nexus 6 is a lag-fest. I miss calls constantly because the screen refuses to let me swipe to answer. Yes, I've tried reflashing, keeping apps uninstalled, etc. The only thing I haven't tried is rooting and doing a custom ROM, which I am not doing to make the phone simply usable. Not to mention the camera is awful. Laggy, slow, and takes awful pictures. Of all the Android phones I've owned, the Nexus 6 is 2nd to worst [worst was Droid RAZR due to horrid battery life].
As much as everyone loves the Nexus, it feels like the only thing going for it is updates straight from El Goog.
One of my favorite phones was the Note 2, if not the favorite. It feels like I am coming home with the Note 7.

I went from M8 to Note 5 and was uneasy like you. It was the first phone I ever bought with (1) Nonremovable battery, (2) no expandable storage, and (3) the knowledge that it probably would never get root. I have not regretted it or missed flashing ROMs constantly at all, honestly! Maybe I'm just over the non-stop updates and stuff, but it was great having a phone that flat out rocked and I never felt the NEED for root because it was fast and pretty damn great out of the box (and still is!). I think you'll find a similar experience with the Note 7, which looks even better!
Anyway, I'm coming from the Note 5 and going to the Note 7 because I was able to get a good deal and sell my Note 5 for $450, making my Note 7 free for 13 months (and then my upgrade kicks in so the cost per month drops to $16/mo basically). So the phone will cost me under $200. No brainer at that point!

HTC 10 - I thought I could live with the screen size. Turns out I can't.
Also -- The n7 just looks so damned good.
Very reassuring, thank you! I am SO looking forward to getting this phone, and really tired of seeing the "order processing" status on Verizon lol.

Note 3. I REALLY wanted the Note 5 but was not impressed enough, I love my rooted Note 3. I thought it was just time for something new. Not thrilled with the Edge screen but tired of waiting for the perfect phone that just never seems to come out as expected.

That's unfortunate, because that's one of the main features of buying an unlocked Nexus device. Being able to ROM it with any number of amazing ROM's. And that is why my Nexus 6 runs super-fast and super-smooth.

One of the features is frequent updates. Another is one that I mentioned previously: to be able to install any ROM you like. To be able to completely customize the phone however you like from top to bottom. It's all about freedom to do what you wish with your device.
The only negatives I have about my Nexus 6 is battery life is waning. And the phone is much heavier and thicker than a Note. I'll be retiring my Nexus 6 (as a backup device), and getting the Note 7. I'll miss being able to root and ROM. But, with the updates to TouchWiz, and the amount of features and settings that come with the Note 7, I think I may be able to live without rooting/ROMing...... for now.
Exactly. Honestly I am tired of chasing custom roms, kernels, radios..... trying to figure out what works best, what's compatible with what, having to maintain software updates myself.... I want my phone to work and I don't have time or interest in "modding it". That's why my Nexus 6 is going back to VZW and I'm finally getting another Note..

Note 5... because of the IP68 water and dust resistance.
S6 - wanted to give the curved screen and s-pen a try. Also miss microSD storage, but it appears I'm trading that for the IR blaster.
iPhone 6S Plus 64GB, Upgraded to the Note 7 for the iPhone 7 supposedly not having a headphone jack and never getting a jailbreak. Got bored with the phone and needed to go back to Android.
Coming from the Nexus 6P, main reason was no support on Verizon for my phone so features like wifi calling at my house isnt an option and I need to be able to receive calls for work. Love my 6P but when I saw that Note 7 i had to order
iPhone 6s to the N7. Bored of iOS and want a bigger screen. Love the water/dust resistance and miss having an s-pen when I had a N3.
Note 4. Because I dropped it and broke the screen about a month ago and had to use my wife's old phone waiting for the 7 to come out.
Coming from Note 5 64GB which I liked more than the note 2, 3, and 4. Upgraded because the SD is back, better battery, cool Iris feature, sleeker, Spen is better, color, and just the fact that it's a new note.
