Galaxy S5 Marshmallow lag gallery after inactivity or after optimization - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
Excuse me if the argument was already treated, I really didn't find anything
I've got a problem that make me crazy.
After the upgrade from lollipop to marshmallow, I found the device quite more reactive and fluid, but an issue hide into the shadow.
That's my samsung gallery. It lag very much after a long unused time or if I do the optimization by the samsung smart manager. I made a video that's you can see on youtube by searching "galaxy s5 marshmallow lag gallery" , probably is the first video, my name is Mauro.
So, I've tried every kinda of solution, I completly remove any picture, of course removed the microSD card, clean cache and data, reset to the factory, so, every single option that I know, was tried.
The device is the G900F, was in spanish firmware (I'm italian) and finally I put the UK firmware 'cause it will upgrade more frequently.
I don't remember when I upgrade if it was immediately slow, but after some weeks of use it was.
Last week I reset all again, and the app was going good, but today again the lag.
When was resetted the gallery, after a long inactivity or after the clean by smart manager, takes 4 second and half to open the picture, starting by tap the app, then open the folder, tap the image and ready to work, instead, even closing the app, if it was recently opened, the gallery is really quick, just the time to tap and it open, around 2 second and half o little more.
Now, it make me mad, for the same process, so after a long inactivity , the same picture, positioned in the same place, it take over 6 seconds.
I've already removed the app under the safe battery by trying to exclude from the Doze, but nothing change.
Do you have some ideas? No one have the same problem?
Edit:
New more test. I've try to circumscribe who do what, and in the smart manager is the optimization of the ram that's makes lag the gallery.
Well, how can I solve this problem? I suppose, when the phone is unused for a long time, something inside decide to kill my gallery, though when I looking the multitasking, the gallery app seems already opened, infact when I click, if it was for example, in the camera gallery, it returns right there but with a long time of loading, I repeat, around 6/7 seconds

Lag or not lag ??

I've read all post in this board.
but i can't quite understand if lag is really there, if it shows only in certain phone(say carrier, geographical area etcetc) or whatever...
reading random post here and here doesn't give precise informations about this aspect of the hero's user experience.
So i'll make a poll. 4 options of lag-tollerability.
if you vote for the poll, reply describing details of the phone, and a precise description of the lag(where, when, app open...)
ps
I'm italian so sorry for my dodgy english.
I'm going to refrain from voting until I have a better idea of what precisely people mean by lag.
The only slightly slow thing on my G2 has been the messages - sometimes there has been a bit of a delay opening the list of messages, threads etc.
Today, I waited for all of about..........four whole seconds.
I can live with that.
None of the phone's other functions have any appreciable delay or sluggishness.
It's worth noting, however, that I don't use the Farcebook or Twatter widgits, so I don't know if they cause any lag on other poster's phones.
Compare this to my Vario III/Kaiser which seized up on regular occasions.
And if you had the temerity to hit the 'back' button whilst using PIE, well, it was sometimes quicker to do a soft reset than wait for it to get its arse into gear.
That's the feedback i was looking for.
in my opinion you are in the second option of the pool.
Because it's normal that some application need loading time, and that's not lag nor abnormal..
I voted no lag, but that is because of some modifications I made.
Before I go into detail, here is my definition of "lag":
My device lags if an action that should be instant hangs for a fraction (or more) before taking place. An example of such an action is a screen swipe across the homescreen. It should happen as you perform the swipe, if it doesn't, something is lagging and preventing the screen from moving. Waiting for a calendar to load, an inbox to display, logging in to messenger, that sort of stuff is in my view not lagging. They are usualy an action that loads data for display or modification.
I voted for No lag at all, but I cheated because I have removed the entire Sense UI and its widgets from my device using the Rosie remover from Modaco.
The Sense UI is a great piece of work, but every time I used it I had the feeling the Hero just doesnt have the horsepower to drive such a UI. (Which fits my description of lagging)
So, lagging: No, but only after cheating and reverting to the default Homescreen.
I voted totally no, but it's not exactly true. The phone can sometimes lag abit while it's loading up from sleep mode, also the browser can lag depending on which sites you visit. But both of those examples are very minor and I have never had the phone freeze for more than a second.
Sure the phone could be faster, but when I got it, and after hearing about it's laggyness from reviews I was supprised of how fast it was.
I use the default ROM that came with the phone, and taskkiller isn't even installed.
I have a couple of complaints about this device but lag isn't one of them.

I experience the same thing, I've had doubts on buying the new diamond 2 or the hero, since i've had the diamond 1 for a while I decided to try the android thingy.
Compared to that the diamond lives in the stoneages and experiences lot's of lag, my hero sometimes hesitates when coming out of sleep and when I just refreshed the widget's (got new mail ore weather update) it lags a tiny bit, but I don't consider the hero to lag overall so I voted option 2
Typing quickly makes the keyboard lag quite alot which always winds me up.
Scrolling through contacts is very clunky (maybe due to all of them having pictures and facebook status'). But then again dont offer the feature if its crap.
Messages takes too long to load up.
BAM!

Did you keep any aspects of Sense UI intact? I don't know what is tied to it as far as the keyboard and music player?
Totally no for me. I thought about 'More of a slight delay' but that would be less accurate, as for the most part things happen very quickly. The keyboard has been known to miss a beat, and large pdf files take a minimum of time to load up the pages as you scroll, but apart from the expected delay in processing intensive tasks, generally I've been pretty amazed at the speed of the thing to be honest. If I was to say the Hero lagged, I'd have to say my PC lagged aswell. Some things do take time. You're not gonna load up a 5Mb pdf instantaneously on the iPhone either.
To completely remove delay or lag from a phone you'd need processing power far beyond that normally required by the software, which isn't practical.

Only the visible parts have been removed such as HTC widgets and the homescreen itself. The apps still work great (calendar, people, keyboard, etc). The background services are still present.
Just a bit of delay between switching screens and once in a while I do encounter keystroke lag when typing on eBuddy and RoadSync email - rarely any keyboard lag when texting.
I've been trying out some bits and pieces over the past couple of days and have noticed some serious performance differences.
After my factory reset I didn't set an 'unlock code' with the connect the dots dealy, this has made a massive difference to the performance of my phone. Also, as I'm with Vodafone, I didn't bother setting up Peep, I opted for Twidroid instead. Without peep on a home 'scene' I've got a performance boost too. Twidroid is still running in the background, mind and I don't miss a tweet!
Just thought I'd chime in and see if anyone else had noticed the same.
No lag at all here with anything yet, tried a few different configurations. Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones, but looks like the new update will sort out any lag in the next few days?
No lag for me, sometimes you have to wait a second but compare to my last phone (HTC Diamond) it's just black and white.
The diamond was buggy and slow. The hero is fast, I never had a freeze and Android is the best OS I never tried!
This is my first touch screen, and first android phone, so of course im constantly impressed with it. Blows my mind in fact.
That said, I do experience lag problems:
- that require me to use Taskiller to kill everything once in a while if ive been using to many difference apps.
- Keyboard lag when typing fast. More noticeable if apps are piled up in the background
- Sliding between home screens straight after unlocking the screen. Seems like once they screens are 'buffered' they slide smoothly and quickly. FYI i only use 3 home screens with only the clock, dialer, Taskiller and WIFI widget. Rest is plain app shortcut icons.
- Dialer widget. Sliding through favourite contacts is sloooow. Take a second or two to start moving, and as aboive, once I've slid all the way up and down and its 'buffered' its smooth as silk...
I voted for Sometimes is unusable.
First week I used TasKiller and Advanced Task Killer (great app btw!) to kill unnecessary apps running, and I was very pleased with the performance. Next week I uninstalled all third party task killer apps because I read here that Android should be very capable of handling these things. Well in my experience, I doesn't handle this all too well, I think now my device is lagging more than with me using task killers.
Lagging here means screen unresponsive when unlocking, not being able to drag notifications bar to properly view what's there, home screen switching is not so smooth etc. I'm only using Wi-Fi & other ON/OFF switches, medium weather app, couple of calendar widgets and bunch of shortcuts on my home screen. Only FB contacts are integrated, I'm not on Twitter or Flickr.
Just today I started using class 6 microSD card, and for now, everything seems pretty smooth. But I did remove the battery before doing this so it might not be so dramatic change compared to previous experience. Waiting eagerly for the new Hero update!
Only Sense is slow sometimes
Sometimes (once or twice a day) it definately lags. But it seems only a "Sense" issue. When it happens, for example the scrolling is not smooth anymore and the "SMS" Widget stops working properly (you can't flip trough the messages anymore).
But if I enter any Application, the App. itself works smooth and without any lags at all.
Strange thing is: after a couple of minutes (and it doesn't matter if the phone is turned on or not) the lag disappears totally. Maybe theres is some sort of "memory-rearrangement" or "Disk defragmentation" going on that slows the phone down while running.
it's worth noting as well that whether or not there are any "issues" it's always possible to make the phone lag - playing high-bit-rate-music while trying to browse a flash website will do it, for example - but that's only because the phone doesn't artificially limit what you can do

Camera Not Working

Ok so we know, at least most of us know, that there are way too many bugs with this phone.
Here is an other one to add to the list:
The camera simply does not work when I need it to.
I press the physical "take photo" button on the side of the camera and then I see the image of the camera come up and it hangs there for about 45 seconds to 1 minute, sometimes longer, then it goes back to the default screen, not the camera menu.
I click on the camera icon on the touch screen and it shows the image of the camera then goes back to default screen, not the camera menu.
I go to windows, scroll down to camera click it it shows the camera image then back to default screen, not the camera menu.
Basically I must reboot once maybe two times in order to actually use the camera, again waiting the 2-3 minutes each time I re-boot until the phone fully starts up.
Any suggestions?
x
same with me but with little luck, mine have pop up windows said 'there's an application runing, close before use camera'. ususally I close beejiveIM if I use it(still not close opera and resco explorer runing background) and the camera works.
my conclusion Beejive is crash with camera. so I use palringo, the camera doesnt show error message like that when I use palringo. but lately the camera shows error again with palringo, opera and resco explorer!
what an annoying and selfish camera!
any sugestion or cab-fix or some reg edit clue?
Its Media Player. exe not closing!
I was wondering when the first people come up with this problem! I found that this is (at least in my case!) the mediaPlayer.exe that is EATING UP all available (little that is!!!) RAM.
When I have a song play, perhaps a few minutes, nothing bad happens, after closing media player for good, still 80MB RAM left.
But, when I listen for a while to music (using media player NOT slide view!) then after half an hour or 1 hour, I have only 3-5MB left. Yes, 3 to 5 MB!!! In this case, even after closing for good media player, NO RAM is returned! I have only 3-5MB available RAM. And of course that is not enough to run the Camera!
Unless we find a program that can kill the mediaplayer.exe for good and that will indeed return that memory, we have no other option but a restart!
Camera Video Choppy too!
And now since I made a first video... or better tried to make it with this crappy phone/camera, I found that the recorded video is choppy, it seems to hang when the camera is moved or objects move.
Really bad. Anybody found a reg tweak to perhaps fix this or make it at least better? This is NO WAY 30fps, not even 20!

Have you tried e.g. MemMaid from DinarSoft?
I have had trial version installed once, looked fine. But there seems to be u lot of similar tools. I just never needed any as badly as you do.
Well, actuall I think this is caused by Slide|View. Because I was fed up with this crap, I did a hard reset and stoped the custom install. I installed all I wanted/needed Manually!
And of course I did NOT install TileWave, SlideView and any other crap panel, exept the Growing Panel (just to brag a little ;-)
Now, media player does not take even 10MB and all is well. While playing music I can make pictues even.
So far all is well. The only thing bothering me now is, every other day a message pops up either wanting to send a SMS to register my phone, or a customer survey from microsucks.
If anybody knows HOW to stop it without actually doing it, please let us know.

That's strange because I think it's actually Media Player itself.
Since latest FW I use TileWave and Slide View, uninstalled the rest of the flashy panels (City, Growing, SPB) and never had any problem with running camera.
I listen to alot of music but always from SlideView, no RAM problems here....
BTW if you want to kill any process, SKTools does it.

Just wanted to share my experience on this: I remember choosing cancel and it would stop. Did you press any hardware buttons instead or the X button on the window?
Camera did not start.... again!
Well, I found the registry setting for these crappy sms sending msgs. Now its gone!
BUT, today I still had 110MB left and the camera did the 'cannot start' crap. Just did not start, whatever I did.
Had to restart the entire phone in order to get it startup again. So I guess it is not the memory shrotage that seemed to have caused it before.

Lollipop Findings

Installed Lollipop last night and a few things that I found are working/not working. Let's get a list going here.
1. H+ icon no longer shows up. (ATT)
2. Feels like a new phone performance wise.
3. Home Launcher App no longer seems to work. (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dynamicg.homebuttonlauncher&hl=en)
Cast screen option is now available in the notification pull down, but it still doesn't recognize the Chromecast.
ART uses a lot more space for apps, so a microSD card is now a must. Probably why Moto added it.
Camera doesn't seem to have any improvements. Not worse, but I'm not seeing anything better either.
Sometimes specific apps (like Skype for example) don't seem to use both speakers leaving the sound very quiet.
Screen pining option in security is awesome

Hey, I'll paste the questions I leaved in a thread I created but doesn't seem so popular:
First and foremost, I'm curious about the new memory management in this Release. As you can see in this threads 1 XDA Thread 2 (Official Motorola Forums one) the problems with RAM management in KitKat were MASSIVE.
- How do you feel it is as of right now? It's still there? It's a little better?
- How does the CPU respond? Could you run an Antutu Benchmark to compare with KitKat?
- I know it's a little early to ask, but I'm curious about Project Volta. Do you notice more battery life?

Have noticed performance improvements? Such as better memory management, improved responsiveness, faster app loadings etc. ?
On 4.4.4, I can't run Facebook and Chrome simultaneously without one getting kicked out of memory

100% at 8am. Was down to 10% around 2:30PM after heavy usage. Definitely not real world use. Mostly playing around with Lollipop.
Application optimization does not happen at boot like it did w/ ART on 4.4.4.
I'd like to note, it took my phone nearly 45 minutes to upgrade from 4.4.4 > Lollipop.

Can you test some more things, like a benchmark or something just to see, and more impressions about the lag of open the menu?
I waded through all the spam and robotically dubbed crap on YouTube, and FINALLY found someone who's actually bothered to make a brief video... so here it is:
Has anyone else noticed not being able to access the camera from the lockscreen on Lollipop?
My thoughts on Lollipop 5.0:
-Booting the phone takes about 30 seconds. I have a lot of apps on the SD card, and they take a while to become available. Perhaps 2 minutes. I had to move a lot of apps to the SD card to get room for the update, so I can't compare before and after times for finding apps on the SD.
-When the phone was updating to Lollipop it said it optimized 105 apps. It does not optimize on every boot. I'm pretty sure apps on the SD card were not optimized based on number of apps.
-Music (Pandora and Play Music) still stops playing in the background when I launch some apps. The suspected 'memory leak', memory management problem, or whatever the cause, has not been fixed. So no apparent change there.
-If I create an app folder with apps on the removable SD, those apps still do not reappear in the folders when I restart the phone. No change.
-App-specific notifications are awesome. I have 'Subway Surfers' on my phone because my kids like the game. I hate getting notifications every day for an app I don't even play. I have disabled notifications for that app. Definate positive change.
-I use an app called 'Notification Toggle' to add toggles for skipping tracks, camera, battery life with numbered %, turning on wifi and cell data, etc. The Cell Data toggle doesn't work any more, it takes me to a screen that can be used to turn on/off data roaming but not data all together. Hopefully that will be fixed. The notification screen update already gives me another option (see my next comment).
-The pull-down notification menu can be pulled down again to show some settings that partly replace the 'Notification Toggle' app I just mentioned, including turning cell data on/off. It's a nice feature. I wish it were customizable. Definate positive change; it doesn't quite replace 3rd party apps for me, but that's part of the Android customizable experience.
-It takes longer to unlock. The unlock pattern/code input has been replaced by notifications, you need to swipe up before unlocking. Minor change but definitely not an improvement for me.
-Stability and responsiveness are good. I haven't noticed any lag but I don't remember noticing lage on 4.4.
-Battery life? I'm a compulsive phone charger, so I don't know yet. I like the new battery life screen. It shows charge over time like it used to, and it also shows projected battery life. It says I have 10 hours left, after using the phone for about an hour looking at settings, locking/unlocking the phone while on WiFi streaming Pandora.
-Lockscreen notifications have the following settings:
Show all notification content will show content in new text messages and what is playing on Pandora or Play music; in Play Music it lets me skip to the next song without unlocking; I can't change tracks in Pandora from the unlock screen. Annoying change for me.
Hide Sensitive content in Notifications lets me know I got a text but doesn't show the message; I can see what is playing and skip tracks in Play Music but not Pandora
Show Nothing shows... nothing.
I wish I could select which apps would show their content on the lock screen; in my mind what I am playing in Pandora is not nearly as sensitive as what texts I receive.
If I get a text and there are multiple notifications on the lock screen, or if I get more than one text,it won't show the content of the texts. No scrolling to fit more notifications (like the notifications shade). So if you have a lot going on, lock screen notifications become sort of useless, and that's when they might be the most useful.
I used to be able to press the power button and skip to the next pandora track from the unlock screen. Two actions. Now: (1) I press the power button, (2) swipe up, (3) enter the unlock pattern, (4) open Pandora, and (5) skip to the next track. Convenience has suffered.
People will have different opinions, but for me personally the whole lock screen experience is a step backwards. I think there are some simple fixes that could make it very good, and I hope this is a bad start to a good feature (i.e. waiting for 5.0.1).
Memory leak/bug is still there Oh god why

Thanks, I asked if this was the case in another thread, nice to have it confirmed but wasn't the answer I wanted.
From my impression the KitKat lockscreen is perhaps better for people like us (it is for me), you can easily see your notifications but not see any content just the icons at the top, music playback controls are easily accessible and the pattern/PIN is displayed without a swipe.

I can get to the camera app from the lock screen without unlocking, take pics from front and rear camera, shoot video, and view the gallery pics/videos I took from THAT LOCKED SESSION ONLY. I can't see all the other pics/videos on the phone.
A minute later I accessed camera without unlocking the phone again. I could NOT see the pics that I took a minute ago with a locked phone. In other words, if I take pics with a locked phone those new pics are still private, as long as I turn off the screen again. Maybe that's the default Lollipop behavior, but I'm glad it works that way.
Edit: the phone wants to back up the photos that i took with the screen locked. I need to look into this. I deleted those pics i.e. I selected 'delete everywhere'. If someone takes pics with my phone, will they be backed up to online folders/tools that I share? I'm just a simple caveman lawyer, your new technology frightens me. I just copy/save my pics manually, so I don't even understand how backup works. I'm pretty sure backup was turned backup off in Jelly Bean.
Another edit: The Photos app says that backup is for 'my eyes only'. As long as no one can take a pervy pic with my locked phone and share it with the world, I'm ok. Because we all know how safe pics on our phones are.

Sorry, I don't have a thumb drive or otg cable handy. I never heard of the problem till you mentioned it, I guess I don't use thumb drives with my phone.
Different subject:
I connected the phone to my computer with USB debugging turned on, and I got this driver error:
Device driver software was not successfully installed
Motorola ADB Interface X No driver found
It's an old problem and looks like getting the error is expected, but I'm busy at work and can't be bothered to look into it for now. File explorer from the PC works fine. I have other android toys, I don't like messing with my main phone so I don't need ADB anyways. I honestly think I've never even put this phone into USB Debug before today.

Thanks, weird that it's not working for me. If I restart the phone, it will work the very first time I'm on the lockscreen and swipe into the camera, but on subsequent attempt I get a black screen with the icons for switching between front and back cameras and for shooting video, but none of the controls work.

Interesting, that's an inconsistency between out phones. I can enter, exit, and re-enter the camera app repeatedly without unlocking the phone, turn the screen off and on again, and use the camera again without unlocking.

One more thing: the home screen redraw issue still happens, but less often. For example I just used chrome browser briefly, went home and the screen didn't redraw. Same with Play Music.
I loaded Clash of Clans, collected some gold/elixir, donated some troops, went to home screen and the screen had to redraw. Exiting a lightweight game like 2048 does not cause the home screen to redraw (so far). Overall the home screen seems to redraw less often.

Actually, another one more thing:
In settings-->developer options-->Process stats: I got the message "device memory is currently critical" I killed a few apps (including Play store, play music, all the Motorola apps) and got 403 MB ram available. Settings is using 70MB, Notification Toggle is using 3MB, Swipe is using 26MB. I went back to Process Stats and it now says 'Device memory is currently normal". Sorry, I didn't take not of how much memory was available before killing apps.

Reboot:
Unlock screen 50 seconds after pressing power
Widgets active 1 min 15 seconds after pressing power
Apps on SD available in app drawer 2 minutes 30 seconds after pressing power. I have 36 apps on my SD card, it's a 16GB card with 5.4GB available (lots of media) and I believe it's a class 4 or class 6).
On boot I had 408MB ram free. After killing some apps I have 453 MB free; settings using 70MB, Swype 24MB, and Google Search 15MB. MotoCare using 15MB and if I kill it it just restarts. I don't know if Settings always uses RAM or if I get that RAM back when I exit Settings.
How much more space does ART take?
You can try ART on KK... but on my XT1068 Dalvik 2.6Gb free space / ART 2.0Gb free space.
I updated my phone yesterday.
It's now faster. The lollipop is so beautiful.
The only problem is that yes I can't see
H+ icon anymore. Does anyone know what ?

[FIXED] Push Notifications Not Reliable on the S8/Nougat

Upgrading from the S5, Chrome Push Notifications were almost always instantaneous, and I never once missed a notification. On the S8, many are delayed and I miss a huge number of them, mostly when my phone is "off" (eg, in my pocket). Anyone else experiencing this, or know how I can fix it? The only thing that has changed is the phone, so it's definitely something with the S8 (or possibly the kernel version running on it). Seems to happen on both wifi and cellular network. I need these notifications, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Update: Here is how to fix the issue of not getting notifications for an application on the Samsung S8, or probably any Nougat device:
Go to Settings -> Apps
Click the : Menu in top right, select -> [Special Access]
Select > Optimize Battery Usage ->
Click the dropdown menu towards the top of the screen that says: "Apps not optimized [v]" -> change to [All Apps]
Add any application you want to get notifications for without delay, all the time. Eg, Chrome, Gmail, Facebook, etc.
Hopefully Google will fix the overzealous battery optimizations soon so we don't have to do this!
Oh boy. I love the phone, but something in the RAM and Battery optimization is killing all background apps, including your Chrome. Drives me nuts, every time I switch between apps and return to previous, its restarted, which means forgots to where I was. Very annoying when reading news, Facebook etc. Seems like there is no fix for it at the moment.
Excluding apps from battery optimization doesn't help at all. Everyone think is Nougat problem, but my S7 edge didn't have the same issue.
I thought I'm the only one with delayed notification issue. I tested the gmail notification on my s8+. The phone was in standby mode on my pocket and I sent the email from another account. No notification until 4 minutes later. With my other phone notifications are instant. I have issues with other app notification as well. The forums apps will not even notify me anymore if someone responded to my post.
It is definitely related to some overly aggressive battery/cpu/ram optimizations on this phone. I also have seen weirdness in other apps, like you guys mentioned. However, one exception is AquaMail, which when I set it back up on this phone during install, it explicitly asked me to click a thing that took me to some deep setting that allowed me to excluded AquaMail from some battery or some other optimization. I don't remember, unfortunately, because I was just trying to get my phone setup, and didn't think it'd be such a widespread issue. I'll try to dig around and see if it still shows a way to get back to that setting, or if there is a way to add other apps while IN that page.
I also have the battery optimization thing to "Off" and it's not monitoring apps (so it says). In developer settings, there's a background apps setting, default is "standard limit", whatever that means, but the largest choice is 4, which seems really small...
This is definitely frustrating, I love the hardware side of this phone, it's amazing, but the software/OS execution seems like a huge miss, almost like it went completely untested live. Hope either they fix these issues soon, or someone figures a way to do so.
The interesting part is that I have too under Battery: Power saving modeto OFF, but that doesn't stop the phone still to put apps to sleep. An hour ago I had a notification that 13 aps will be pit to sleep, even that I have power saving mode to off.
It is very annoying: if I have clicked form something(web page or Facebook, Upday etc) to a link and start reading, but in the mean time I have a message and open it to respond, when I am back to the first app with the open link, it gets reloded to the original page as I have never clicked on the link. Facebook is very good example.
I can't even seem to figure out how to get to a RAM usage screen in settings at all on this phone. I'm curious if it's something sucking down all the RAM causing apps to swap on/off, or it is just an aggressive optimization setting somewhere.
Sounds to me like a Nougat issue rather than anyhting to do with this phone. This is exactly the sort of thing that has worried me constantly since i first heard about this kind of battery saving feature they decided to implement in Nougat.
Have any of you been using Nougat on your previous device without having this issue? If not then I would say it is probably Nougat causing it.
I have similar with bluemail where sometimes it doesnt notify me of hotmail emails very quickly but i put that down to bluemail being a bit slow sometimes since it did it on my S5 too.
This is my first experience with Nougat. stoyank said his S7 on Nougat did not have this issue, fwiw.
I'll take reliable apps over better battery any day of the week. This is pretty ridiculous, and even more so since there doesn't appear to be a way to fix/turn it off!
Update:
Found the settings page:
Settings -> Apps -> : Menu : Special Access -> Optimize Battery Usage -> Apps not optimized [v] -> All Apps
On this page almost everything is listed as "on". I scrolled through, turned Chrome, Chrome Device Library, and Google Services Framework OFF. No idea if this will help, but hopefully it will.
Will let you guys know later today if I missed any more updates. There might be another service needs turned off on this page that I missed. If you're missing updates in one of your apps, try turning that off in this page, and see if it helps. I'm guessing and hoping it does work, because AquaMail was one of the few things listed here as Off (from my config thing I did when I setup the phone) and it always receives emails instantly through push.
Update 2: My wife's S7 apparently has this same issue since it updated. She often doesn't receive facebook notifications since it updated her phone to nougat. She just assumed it was the facebook app that was bugged. Yikes! Not sure how this hasn't become a bigger issue, surely there are tons of people that need reliable push notifications for various apps. Hopefully my fix above works as a band-aid until a broader fix is implemented.
My Galaxy s7 edge was updated to Nougat for good few months before I got the S8. However I have not experienced similar issues. Most of the apps did not need to reload every time I switch between them. I am not bothered about getting an email a couple of minutes late, but browsing news, or wifi streaming music to an external player is non usable at the moment. It looses conection, reload pages, every time I scroll down on Facebook and swithch between apps, it seems as it goes back to the top of the news feed, loosing where I left it.
A week ago I was watching on YouTube a comparison between iPhone, S8, pixel and some other crap, and surprisingly on a speed test and re-opening the already open apps, the Galaxy S8 came as last as it seems that needed to reload all apps again. You can imagine the shock I had, since I don't like iPhone, but it came first, nearly twice faster.
Need a fix soon, as I already give my Galaxy S7 edge to the wife. Can't get it back.

Try my suggestion in the post above yours, see if that helps. So far, I haven't missed any notifications, but it's too soon to tell, and I haven't had my phone in my pocket, but on my desk.
I know you can cherry pick some apps and exclude them from being monitored, and power optimised. However, not all apps are listed under "+add apps" for example Chrome, Upday, Facebook and many more.

No problem. It was in a weird spot. Seems to be working great so far, I'm back to instant notifications, something that wasn't happening before. Will give it a few days til I call the all clear.
Still annoying we have to do this at all. Hope Google gets it fixed. I saw people complaining about it back in August, so I'm not too hopeful of anything immediate.
I would say my fix works. I have received every notification in a timely manner. Updating the first post to reflect this.
I resolved my gmail not in push mail mode by simply removing the re-adding the accounts.
I did that on Google Inbox app as I have issues getting any email notifications. Still not receiving any!
I deleted the app, deleted cache, put it as priority, removed from optimize battery list, everything! Still no notifications for email via Inbox! WTF
Posting just to say I already have made sure gmail isn't being put to sleep but I'm also not getting mail notifications reliably on my S8+. Missed work emails on more than a few occasions by hours because of this.
Ok I was able to fix it finally by: Deleting Google Account and re-adding again.
Email (Inbox app) notification work now

Sharing our 7x lag experience and hopefully finding the cause.

Mine seemed fine at first, but freezes randomly and often takes over a minute for the camera app to start.
Tried, but didn't help-
Disabled the factor version of Facebook and the Facebook app manager. Re-installed FB from the play store.
Tried, and helped some-
Uninstalled Action Launcher. Simply switching back to the stock launcher seemed to help moderately at least in the launcher UI. Did not help with the camera.
Removed 128GB SD card. I was using this to store all my pictures and music. Quite inconvenient to go without it, but it did help some. Camera still opens slow, but it is more like 10 - 15 seconds rather than 1-2 minutes.
Tried, and helped a lot-
Developer options- Background process limits set to 'at most 4 processes.' This helped a lot. There was still random slowdowns, but never had a frozen screen for longer than a second or two. Unfortunately this made some apps misbehave, especially facebook when opening via a notification.
Seems to be fixed for the most part on Oreo.
