I am torn between this phone and the Droid Inc 2, which has a 1.3Mp FFC. I am trying to find out if quality would be about the same, or if the Droid Inc 2 would have better quality since it's 1.3Mp?
The front camera on the Play is a joke, might as well not even have one on it lol
Couldn't find the settings to alter it from the native white noise look!
Which is all perfectly expected on any phone with a FF camera. The better the quality of the camera, the higher the bandwidth needed to actually make video calls which is bad.
I use Vtok to use gtalk with video, quality is the same as anything with vga camera. Its good enough, remember that you are at the mercy of your internet speed anyway.
took some shots with each camera from random things in and around my house in case anyone wants to draw a conclusion of the google cam vs stock cam

my conclusions, both cameras are inconsistent, but, both possess the power to at least sometimes take a good shot
thanks for this. the Moto X cam isn't that bad. really hoping L brings consistency in the camera department
I have them both installed. I hadn't even thought about differing image quality, but I really like just being able to tap the screen to take a picture in the moto x camera, and the burst mode, and I also love the photosphere and panorama from the google camera. The Moto X camera software has panorama too, but the implimention of actually taking the panorama is so much superior in the google camera app.
Judging from what I see the camera sucks. Noise...noise everywhere!! The bikes are sweet, the first one could be a sweet cafe racer and the second one looks like a cool dirt track bike.

Yes, lots of noise. The first bike is a cafe project I'm building with my oldest son. The second little bike was a bike my younger sons built for a custom bike contest. This one is my project that I've been building over the past year
ProCapture is amazing. This app truly shows that its a software issue and not hardware. The low light/ indoor photos (using their Noise Reduction option) displayed photos 10x better than stock or google
Is there a way to set Google cam as the default to use with wrist twist motion

I don't believe so, could be wrong however.

No. The twist feature is tied in with the Motorola Camera

It's kind off nice to see the google camera do better in some cases, which would mean there still is some hope for more optimizations of the camera
it's just so inconsistent no matter what camera you use. one shot will look great, the next will look like an oil painting. i've also tried procam, vignette, zoom fx, and all cameras have the same result.

With Root and Xposed and the "Twisty Switch" module you can use Google Camera (or any app for that matter) with the twist gesture.

It still works? I thought the first post said something that it's not in development and may not work? If it works, then I may give it a try
Edit: the bugs that are there made me not want to use it...

One thing I have noticed using the google camera app and using the front camera it is very laggy. The back camera it works just fine but the front camera and google don't get along for some reason.

I believe any camera app you use the front camera will be laggy. hopefully Lollipop fixes this
Glad I found this thread!
I'd like to see some shots using HDR mode on both cams. Google Camera has a pretty amazing HDR+ mode on Nexus, but I guess this will not be active on the Moto X, right?
In my Galaxy S4 GPE the HDR feature in Google Camera takes impressively good pictures...
I'm currently trying to decide between the oversized Nexus6, the Moto X or maybe something completely different. Camera is one of the deciding factors...
Thanks!
Here's my comparison between the Stock X (2014) camera and Google Camera.

Looking at zoomed in sections, the stock camera does quite a bit of over-sharpening, and Google Camera seems to do a better job of capturing detail and better exposure.
I'm really excited to see what 5.0 brings us camera-wise in the coming month.
In my case i prefer the nexus 5 camera. Just the ois is a good feature.
I still use different camera app to understand what is the better one.
I'm sure is only a software problem and Android Lollipop can resolve this.
Why are people complaining about noise? If you're worried about iso noise, take photos with a real camera.
Hi, do you notice difference in quality tacking landscape pics with Google camera than the stock ?
For me it seem to be more focused with the moto app than Google even with the touch to focus.. I see this in zooming into the pics...
And for me it seem that the Google camera uses more battery...
What are your feeling ???
Im wondering what guys are using for a camera app, the stock moto app, google camera?
Being new to moto and pure android, Im still trying to figure out what is best to use with a lot of apps.
I take a lot of inside pic's where the light may not be as bright as outside shots.
What would you guys recommend?
Thanks
Try out Open Camera. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.sourceforge.opencamera&hl=en

I just got an update of Motorola Camera from the play store, they claim it has some improvements. I wonder if it will have any impact on photo quality but I doubt.
I use the Google Camera app. I like it's layout the best as I haven't completely gotten used to the Moto camera app's focusing method. It's just easier to take pictures on the Google app, although you miss the integrated double twist to launch the camera.

I have not found a way to reduce the image size from say 22 meg to 3 meg. Sometime I take site survey photos and need to email them. I can fit a lot more 3 meg pictures in one email.
I hope that was not just a Samsung option.
I have been using nexus 6p running stock for an year now , have tried many 3rd party apps but none give quality like google camera in hdr, but disadvantage is that , google camera has no manual controls..
So my request is , if any developer can build a rom that performs amazing with 3rd party camera apps (like giving crispy pics we gets from hdr in g- camera)..
Thank you
