P8 Lite smart - Can't insert birthday dates into contacts - P8lite Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought a P8 Lite smart and so far I really love this device (well, I came from a Gingerbread phone, oh well). When I was transferring all my data from the old device to the P8 lite, I noticed that, while importing contacts, it didn't transfer the birthday dates. I thought it was a transferring issue, but when I went to edit the contacts, I didn't find a field to put the birthday date. I tried transferring again (this time with the Super Backup app) and creating a new contact, and yep, no way to insert those dates.
This issue continues in the Calendar: it's supposed to have a local "Birthdays" calendar that shows all the contacts' birthday, but of course, without a way to put these birthdays into my contacts, that calendar never shows up.
What can I do? Am I doing something wrong or there's an issue with the P8 lite smart default applications? I actually thought that, maybe, this P8 lite smart took some features off, but I searched and found no results whatsoever.

It is really necessary to upload contacts to Google? I don't have a Google account anymore and I prefer not to tie the phone to an account.
Also, I tried creating a contact with a birthday date on the older phone (let's call it Phone #1), sending it to the Huawei, then from the Huawei to an older Huawei phone my friend has (let's call it Phone #2). In both Phone #1 and Phone #2 the birthday date is intact, while my Huawei does not display it. So what I think is: the birthday date is actually saved and memorized in my Huawei, but the contacts app refuses to display it for some reason.
I even tried to install "Contacts+", and that displays the birthday dates just fine, so that somewhat seems to confirm that the problem lies in the default contacts app...

Yes. You need to create a Google account and tie that account to phone.

Have you tried backing up contacts on sdcard and restore it on other phone.

Yes, I tried both the import/export in the address book and the SuperBackup contacts export and both give the same result: birthday info are saved, but the Huawei Contacts app doesn't want to display it, while almosy every contacts app that you can find in the Play Store display them just fine in the Huawei. So, again, the default contacts app seems to be acting up
EDIT: just now the Updater app notified me about an OS update and the changelog supposedly includes "bugfixes". I will update and see if it's an actual bug in the contacts app

I did the update. The issue still persists.

Question about facebook contact integration

Sup y'all,
So I really enjoy having all my facebook contacts' profile pictures/birthdays sync with the contacts on my phone, but the problem I am having is that I have to go into each of my phone contacts and tell it which of my facebook friends to sync with. That kind of sucks, especially since I keep flashing my phone in order to try out new roms. Is it possible to have facebook automatically match up my phone contacts and facebook friends so I don't have to do it all manually? And if not, is it possible to somehow backup all the linked profiles so I don't have to redo it every time I flash a new rom? Lemme know thanks.
Every time I update my ROM.. during the first Facebook login, I'm given the option to sync ALL contacts that it matches with my Facebook Contacts..
(has to be pretty close on the name for it to match).
Try going to the ME contact entry, then sliding over to the Events tab (2nd from right, i believe), then make sure it's logged into facebook.
At the top, you might have a "Link Contacts" or something (going off of memory here). from that screen, it will show you the list of contacts that it has matched.
If you have names in your address book such as "Mom" .. that's not going to automatically match with Jane Doe on Facebook. Gonna have to update your local Contact name to Jane Doe, or the auto-match won't work.
Mine automatically matches about 20-30 of my contacts every time I re-ROM and login to facebook.
ah sick man thanks
I have a question regarding this every time i flash a new rom i do not get this option, i have to manually go in and link everyone to facebook. When i click my contact card I don't even get the option to look at history or status updates on the sliders... I'm logged in on both the sense tab and the facebook in the internet file in the start menu but have never been prompted to sync contacts. I am using Energy rom dec. 13th 29005. Just wondering if anyone else is having this problem was bored figured i'd ask as it gets tiring manually liking all contacts. any response is appreciated.

Match the contact name with the facebook name and it will automatically match it when you sign into facebook. That easy!!
Possible to backup with Titanium?
Here is an idea.. You have to match them all up one or another once.. then SYNC your phone with your computer using Active Sync/Windows Mobile Device Center... It then SAVES all your facebook contacts in with your other contacts so when you hard reset or update your rom, when you sync it up, your contacts are all back (including their facebook contact info)... I hope that helps

No full Gmail sync??

*** edit - title is supposed to say No Full Gmail Contacts Sync **
Ok it's taken me a while to notice this as i've had the phone plenty long enough now, but it was only yesterday I needed to add a contact and found that if I select the option to add to Google Contacts it doesn't actually save them. I've tried multiple times and NOTHING. The phone is able to sync DOWN fine but seemingly cannot sync up. Sadly it seems Samsungs incompetent software tweekers have struck again.
Can anyone else verify if this is the case with all Galaxy S firmware at the moment?
So frustrating; really starting to wish Samsung would just have made this phone a STOCK phone like HTC.did with things like the Magic.
Not the case for me. I have flashed and reflashed a hundred times and when I add a contact, it stays and comes back after a flash through google sync.

What particular firmware are you running? It tells me the contact has saved but then when I look through my phonebook the contact isn't there. Try adding one now to your Google account and report back.if you don't mind.
Darkstriker, can you log into your google account to see if all your contacts are listed there? Is it possible that contacts are synced, but they don't necessarily need to show up under the google account?
They aren't showing up on my phone book or online in my Google contacts, even though it says they're saved.
It could be that im running a custom rom, cant remember the name of it but its the main one that isn't SAMSET!
The main one that isn't samset... gotta love that statement.
Anyways: I may be a problem with your customROM. I am using JM2. I just added one and it shows up in contacts on phone and I'm guessing it will take some time to show up in gmail.

Phonebook Contacts keep disappearing

Hi guys, this is my first post but ive been lurking here for a while trying to learn more about my phone.
This is a bit long winded so please bare with me..
I bought this phone about a week ago from rogers wireless. It's locked to rogers and i updated the phone with the SE updater to the latest version they have. I bought the phone under my contract and then gave it to my wife (her old phone broke so i thought it would be nice to give her a new one)
She's now using her old simcard in the phone and other than the phonebook contacts keep disappearing, everything else works fine and all the txt msgs are intact.
1) whenever i switch sims from her's back to mine, the phonebook will be cleared.
2) today she told me that the phonebook cleared even though she didnt touch the simcard.
any idea as to why this is happening? she thinks the phone is defective i think its just something software. Im going to try and do a factory reset on the phone and setup the entire phone w/ her sim instead of mine (which is what i originally done) and then update again on SE updates.
Gmail sync
Hi
I've had the problem too. It turned out that the synchronization with Gmail was the culprit. The phone saw that a given contact was not in the contact list in Gmail and therefore deleted it from the phone instead of adding it to the Gmail contact list. The same goes for changes to contacts - if I change something on the phone, it disappears when the phone syncs. If I want to keep the changes, I have to make them in the Gmail list. I don't know how to change that behaviour.

Yeah that's just BS. I didn't sync with Gmail right at the start, so when I finally did it last weekend, I lost all of my 249 contacts. Luckily, I had them backed up on my old sim card, so I restored them, but all the contact pictures, facebook links etc were lost
Gmail sync fail
wow! thanks for solving the mystery Martin!
Any idea how i can either import all those contacts to gmail's contacts (other than manually inserting them.. )
Man it's so friggin annoying to have to restore my contact book every time the damn google sync does a check.

You could just turn off google sync
well it seems like ive turned off google sync and yet it still has this problem. I figure it might be attributed to her having to log into google accounts??? there is a message on the notification bar sometimes that asks her to log into her google account. Could that be it?
Every time it doesn't detect a password/or has the user logged in, will it purge all the contacts? Is there even a safe way of backing up the contacts on SD card and then transferring that file to my HD so i can reformat the phone for her?

[Q] Is it better to save contacts to phone or google?

Just wanted to know which was better and why. I have a samsung I9000
Thanks
well if you save to google, and then you get a new android phone your contacts are always there when you login to your google account from your phone. i always save to google
save it on google. If anything happens to your phone, you will not need to worry about losing your contacts. It'll always be there and it's easier to edit contact on Google anyways. This is also helpful if you switch roms a lot. You wont have to copy out your contact and copy it back in everytime.
With applications like Google Sync, I was able to take my contacts and import them into my old Blackberry. When switching to my Android phone the import of contacts was automagical.
Save it to Google, and then export from there into a csv file an additonal backup.
My only issue with saving to Google is you can't assign custom ringtones to non-phone based contacts =/
Anyone know if this is fixed in 2.2?
I've lost my iPhone couple weeks ago and thanks gods all my contacts were in clouds!

What do you want the ringtone for if it's not from a phone?
Another reason to like google vs phone ... It's damn convenient to add a contact on the web page as needed, especially if someone emails you the information and you can just copy&paste it.
I've used Google for mine ever since I bought the G1 when it came out. Come to think of it if I wouldn't have I'd probably not have all of my numbers.
Good stuff.
One question
I synced my contact to my Google account, and since it is syncing, if I accidentally deleted all my contact in the phone, it will probably delete the contact in my Google account too, right?
Or it can restore the backup?

Uh...I think the OP was referring to the difference between the Google contacts and the phone contacts. Meaning that you cannot set ringtones for Google (non-phone) contacts, not contacts without phone numbers.
Although, if there is one thing I really miss from when I initially switched from a Blackberry to the G1, two years ago, was being able to basically setup "filters" for incoming calls, emails and SMS, a customize how each filter was handled.

Depends on the definition of "deleted"...
I don't think it is even possible to accidentally delete all of your contacts. They could be erased by some external means or memory failure, but the sync algorithm does not see that as a delete. A delete is selecting a contact and selecting "delete contact" from the context menu.

Accidentally Delete means someone press delete all on the phone..
The sync will not remove contact from google if you delete from phone. As for ring tone, we'll just need some dev to port stock android contact over. In stock android contact you can set ring tone for individual contact without having the contact on the phone.

Sounds like google is the way to go but how do I get my numbers in "groups" if its linked to google, such as doctors, freinds, family, work? I see that the google ones are a group themselves

You can use backupify, com to backup your google contacts at certain intervals.
That's a nice option to have if you ever accidentally delete your contacts.
If you delete a google contact from your phone it WILL be deleted off of your account. It is a two way sync.

Not directly.
There is no way to sync a phone contact to your Google contacts. You will have to create a separate Google contact.
I think a previous commenter gave the best advice to just use a ROM that has the vanilla android contact app. I think the TWIZ hybrid ROM has the vanilla contacts app.
I have the same complaint. I trying to hold off until there is a vanilla FroYo before using a custom ROM.
Does this mean that none of you are saving your contacts to your sim card?

That's the least advanced way to save a contact because you can only have a name and number, that is all.
I use to save all contacts to sim with my old phones. As soon as I started using my google account I stopped saving to the sim. Mind you I've been with t-mobile for five years with the same sim.

[Q] Gmail contacts got deleted after sync

Hello guys, I am facing a weird problem that I have never faced before. I have one week old brand new Nexus 4 and its just awesome. But some little bug in the OS is just spoiling the whole experience. I am not sure if its a bug or not but surely it shouldn't happen.
The problem is I always synchronize my contacts with gmail. So whenever I added my gmail accounts first, all of my contacts just came into my phone flawlessly. But one morning I just saw all the contacts disappeared leaving a just few which are of no use. After googling and some small rnd I found the life saving option "Restore Contacts" in gmail contacts. I got them back. Didn't know the reason but thought it would never happen again. Today again this thing happened which really pissed me off.
I have used all of the android OS starting from GB to ICS but this thing never happened. I also found that whatsapp, facebook, wechat contacts are not synchronized properly without any reason. Contacts are not properly shown under "Contacts to display" option. Guys is this problem common in JB 4.2.2 or I am missing something to properly configure my phone. Please share your views friends.

Log in to your google account through a web browser. I'll guarantee all your contacts are still there. Either you are not syncing right or you need a factory reset/flash.
Gmail contacts also deleted when they are disappeared from phone

Thanks for your reply. But let me tell you one thing the moment I saw my contacts gone in the phonebook, I checked my gmail account also. The contacts were also not there. Yes I restored my contacts they were fine. They came back to my phonebook but without any reason they disappeared again. I had to do same restore again in the gmail to bring them back in my phonebook. I had not faced this problem before. Thats why I am confused. It's pretty clear to me. The OP added his Google account to his phone, sync'ed his contacts and then some time later found that they had vanished from both phone /and/ Google. He was fortunate to be able to recover them, but the fact that he was able to does not mean that it's not an issue. Likewise, the fact that it has happened again suggests that he needs a little more support that an implied PICNIC reply....

I'd be looking into apps here - if a contact is deleted on your phone, this deletion will be sync'ed back to Google with the symptoms you've reported. Have you scoured your phone for a potential rogue here (either malicious or, more likely, buggy)...?
thanks for getting it finally
thanks daern for understanding my problem. You read my mind. This prob should not happen. Do you mean that any malicious programs are running in my phone?? or any other issue is causing this weird problem. I am not sure tomorrow morning I will see all the contacts vanished again. Its been 2 times I am facing this.

Chances are some (non Google) app on your phone, which has access to your contacts is deleting them. I would backup your storage and "factory reset" your phone. If the problem returns, try removing apps with access to your contacts.

I have a similar problem but in my case there is absolutely no doubt that it is Google deleting contacts from my Nexus 4. I do not even want my contacts synchronized or backed up on Google's servers and prefer to use the phone memory (because I use other apps to back up my contacts). The first time Google deleted my contacts from phone I realized that I had only disabled synch for "contacts" but neglected to also do it for "people" so I made sure all of that was disabled before I went and started deleting duplicate contacts from Gmail (that's right, it not only deleted it from the phone it duplicated them there). I then proceeded to restore my contacts from a .vcf file directly to the phone memory and it worked fine at first. Then, the next day, Google had AGAIN deleted all contacts and again duplicated them on Gmail. The phone has Android 4.3 and is stock other than being rooted. I am hoping to avoid having to delete the google account from the phone altogether. Any ideas?
