Odd "hurricane" looking icon in notification tray - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Anyone know what this icon is? When I pull down the drawer, there's zero info surrounding it (like an app notification). Being that it's on the right side, I assume it's a system notification, but not 100% on that.
Before this icon showed up, my phone was running normal. After a standard reboot, it got stuck on the T-Mobile logo. I had to reset the device and since then, this icon has shown up.

Nothing. It's doesn't appear to be app related.

Maybe it's related to your sim provider as soon as it goes above 4G for example VoLte maybe an advanced quality so it shows that icon

One way to find out goto Settings>Mobile network
And change Network mode to 3G only
And see if that icon still shows up

Yah that did it. It goes away when 3G onky is toggled and come back when LTE is on. More specifically, its tied to the VoLTE. How strange.
Thanks

Changing 3G to Edge on Aria

I have tried settings
wireless & networks
mobile network settings
network operators
Search networks & select Automatically is greyed out and doesnt work
Here is what I did to get it working
1.click phone then press *#*#4636#*#*
2.click on phone information
3.scroll down and click on wcdma preferred
4.click gsm only
5.hit back until you get out and there you go
Down side is every time you reboot you have to do all over again. If any one else knows a better way It would be greatly appreciated.
Mine stays on 3G. I tried this a few days ago using Anycut to create a shortcut to "phone info" and I had NO luck there either.

My Phone is rooted so maybe thats why, or possibly you need to type in
*#*#4636#*#* a little faster I tried 1st time and no luck but on second time worked like a charm.
I wish a direct dial shortcut would work but no luck either. I did get there manually though and yes you have to dial fast. The other thing I noticed is my icon just changes to a 3g with a check mark lik ehow it does if you turn off the always on feature. I suppose I could test with a network speed app to see if it really is on edge though.

I get the E from edge and have done speed test and confirm it is on edge..some times when you change the settings to GSM ONLY..just wait until the E (edge)pops up and if that doesnt work you have to change it back to wcdma preferred and then back to GSM ONLY it will work... and no need to exit out until you get edge on...I just did it and it took a few times but it works I promise.

Okay after a couple tries and testing with XtremeLabs speedtest I can now see the E and it's definitely on edge speeds. Also my unshielded subwoofer is buzzing like crazy Maybe Edge and EMI are go hand in hand

It will help with battery life. 3G drains battery pretty fast, also depending on where you live and signal strengths, your signal can go back and forth from 3g to edge and draining your battery even faster. So if you leave on Edge will help out battery.
Also you can always add a widget to turn off your mobile data when connected to wifi.
Click on Menu -> Add + -> widget -> Settings -> from the list choose mobile data. You can now turn on or off your mobile data when not needed.
Thanks
There's a widget by curvefish.com on the Market that switches between edge and 3g. Haven't tried or tested. Android noob and a little worried to.
How's the battery life difference? I know on the HTC Tilt 2 there was a 4 - 6hr difference.
I think it is the way the SIM card is provisioned. I wasn't able to go to 2G only on my Backflip either even though some could.

I really like that extended controls..THANK YOU , but the TOGGLE DATA WIDGET that i was talking about will still let you send and receive SMS ans MMS..the original one cuts off the APN completely and no SMS or MMS. Thats the only reason i use it. While we on the subject of widgets..check out Audio Manager Pro.
I think I found a way to sustain battery life as much as my old WM phone. A combination of this Edge techniques and setting autokill up and ignore lists ... and removing polling apps (but everyone knows this) ... so the result is today I went into Edge mode with 9% battery left and 3 hours later it was still 9%. Seems really promising. Tonight I'll go to sleep and let you know how much it dropped while at rest (with APN on).
I also tested the Extended Controls APN button with respects to Edge and I was able to recieve SMS and MMS (but the picture portion of the MMS would not download until I activated the APN button). But I suspect leaving the APN on will not hurt your battery life as I had mine on and battery was rock solid (at least with Edge).
To save additional battery, I ditched Advanced Task Killer and went with "Task Manager" which also has a convenient kill widget. I also dumped the aiSystemWidget (WHICH I LOVE BY THE WAY) as it was constantly polling information and instead installed an app called "Android System Info" which is just as effective at displaying information about my system. Anyone else have an app like this that is light on memory (sorry for the hijack).
Sorry to ramble
I get about a loss of 1% per hour now with sync and apn on.

I agree with you 100% on the combination of this Edge techniques and setting autokill up and ignore lists ... and removing polling apps...I also have start up startup cleaner 2..and that does help out with boot up speed.
How is "Task Manager" different from Advanced Task Killer? I have the Pro version and love it....and I'm digging that Android System Info.
Plus I found this widget last night called Quick Boot, It will let you reboot, recovery mode of fast boot with 1 click ... Im lazy like that.

Right? How do pull the PRL.....anyone?
menu/settings/system updates/prl
Updating your PRL is not going to mess up your root at all. The only thing it could affect, is switching back to selecting sprint towers instead of altell towers, if you were using that altell hack.
I am new to Sprint and only been on Android for a few months now, but what is PRL and profile under system updates?

PRL stands for Preferred Roaming List. Basically it tells the phone which towers to connect to while roaming.
Profile has been explained to me as like a soft data reset to your account, sort of like resetting your router.
Anyone else care to add anything?

Damn, I was hoping this would somehow fix my service. I lost 3G service around here a few days ago when a strong thunderstorm came through, I guess a tower is just down. It's weird, 2.1 roms still say 3G (with my bars showing the roaming triangle) while 2.2 roms show 1X instead of EvDo (while showing EvDo while I'm not at home). On either rom, my speeds are **** while I'm at home.
Looks like mostly changes in Mexico..

Has anyone else had an issue where after the PRL is updated, the screen turns black, all that works is the home button, and if you open any menu or setting, a black screen pops up saying that your PRL has been updated, and when you hit OK, you just go back to the black screen?
The only solution I've found is rebooting the phone.

Should you this if you are running Damage control rom or will it affect root/rom?

no it will not effect root or anything like that. I think all it can do is effect how your phone connects to the towers.

[Q] Turning off "cell" radio NOT wireless 3G radio...

Hello everyone..
here is my problem....
I no longer have cellular service from sprint, lets say sprint disconnected it...
ok so i have my evo and a bunch of things i can still do with it.
but! why is it that i cant turn off just the "cellular" radio without it going into plane mode? keep in mind im not talking about "go into wireless mode and uncheck mobile" that only turns off 3g and leaves the phone COMPLETELY ON.
i mean, i dont have the service why do i still have to put it in airplane mode (and on evo's you cant use bluetooth while on that mode)
is there an apk that i can delete so the "phone" feature is gone and no longer shows my the strength bars without the need for airplane mode? its annoying to have to turn on my "PMP" and have to see the airplane on there.
you can use titanium backup to uninstall the phone, then keep mobile networks unchecked and your good to go
edit I think it may still search for signal

installing them wouldn't solve your problem, now I'm thinking delete the prl and set it to roaming only but that would drain the battery fast, that's a toughy, lemme think about it a bit
edit it would be easy if you didn't need bluetooth
Nope, there's no real way to do it. You bought a phone, not an iPod. Live with Airplane mode or get service.
you could kill the radio process in os monitor, unsure of its exact name though
edit ill 2nd dr on this one, theres no good way

I was looking for something like this too. In an area with very little signal, having the radio on is just annoying because it never gets signal, so it drains battery forever, even more because it is constantly scanning. This is perfect for that.
Now if someone could make a widget for this switch...
How does the battery drain? If sprint disconnected your phone it won't keep searching for a network. I have my old phone that laid for over 5 days without charge when I hot my evo... that was both the moment and intercept

It will still actually be connected to the network, you just wont be able to make calls or get texts. This is required for all cell phones, so you can still call 911, or call the carrier to re-activate the phone if you ever want to.

Using Mate 8 in the USA on AT&T....shows I have 4G, but will not connect/load

I can't connect to or load anything, even though the status bar says I'm on 4g. Any ideas?

You may have to call your provider, the IMEI number that the phone has, may not be in their directory.
I'm on Straight talk, using an "at&t" sim card and it works fine.
Maybe the at&t store might have a number that will work.
So strange? Any screenshots?

a) Please check the APN settings - screenshots attached - it should be exactly as shown in the picture.
b) Go to settings - mobile data - networked apps - see if the app you are trying to use is checked in that list.
if both these options fail, check with ATT if they have same IMEI as the one you are using. If all these options are exactly like it should be, then you can try getting your sim card replaced and see if that makes difference.
I am using ATT too & experiencing battery drain when the phone is idle especially in doze. This started from this January ever since 2g services were shutdown. Are you experiencing the same? Any one else have this problem? phone idle drain is like 2% per hour overnight. I tried wipe cache and factory reset but the problem persists.
I found the issue. In the phone settings, I had to click on "more" under the network park and check "use mobile data". For some reason that was not turned on.

S10+: Is it normal that I don't see my carrier's name on top left of the home screen

As the subject says - for some reason I don't see my carrier's name on the top left of my home screen (TMO), I swear it was there before. I only see it in the lock screen. Is this normal with S10+?
Thanks.
Are you using Goodlock and Quickstar?
You can turn network information on or off with Quickstar on the home/lock/notification shade.

I think it is , i don't see mine either
Afaik, the carrier information I only shown on the lockscreen and in the notifications panel (and you can turn it off with good lock)
My AT&T S10+ has ATT in top left corner. Not sure why yours does not
Mine says AT&T sometimes. Other times it's not there. It just randomly appears and disappears.

Kind of. It's always been there and it's there in the lock screen, and also as I said - I swear I saw it on the home screen at some point as well, so if indeed I did I am just wondering where and why did it disappear.
Also, when you're roaming, it's nice to see if you are connected to another provider. For example: with TMO you get unlimited data and text worldwide (well, in many countries, all of Europe, Middle East, etc) and it's nice to see which local carrier you are on.
