Google Pixel XL German discussion thread - Google Pixel XL Guides, News, & Discussion

Dear Android devotees,
The nexus model range ended. All those, who are familiar with Android longly, know it is somehow sad to hear such kind of news. It is an end of a chapter - indeed- and this means also the inception of a new one , now called as PIXEL.
I created this thread for the German community part of this forum who want to speak about rumors, news and opinions in general in regard to Google's next flagships ( in English of course).
Let's do it again & happy flashing!

I know it's the xl forum but if the 5" starts at 649 then the xl will be 699 or 750. They are pulling the same crap like last year. The 5x was way too expensive at launch. Fr 200/ 250 it's a good phone, but the price wasn't justified by only it getting fast updates. The xl has to outclass the 6p. And that will be difficult simply because the 6p is an excellent phone still and it's a lot cheaper and development is going strong. Not to mention the 2k oled display stereo speakers and good camera. If it's not better then people are better off buying the 6p. (If we're kepping it within the nexus line) I will wait for development to get rolling before deciding if I buy another nexus. Currently okaywith the 5x (bought it for 200) and the op3. The op3 is excellent for tinkerers on a budget. The axon 7 is also an option but development for europe is non existent because of the locked bootloader.

Fully agreed. I'll stay with the 6p until I see it rooted and having a decent community.
But I'll switch away from the 6p as soon as I see the community of the Pixel growing. My 6p gets way too hot with normal usage and I'm pissed off about that.

I am still hoping that they offer something that could justify the price. e.g. top tier display and sensors to make it Daydream compatible (which should be the case), unlimited online storage and so on.
But the design and specs from the leaks seem pretty lackluster :/

Yes, I totally agree. I am remembering to the good old "pay-less-for-much" concept, but I would classify this as dead since the nexus 5 actually. We might get something unbelievable, who knows? Yet we don't have many 105% authentic information.

I am really really hoping for a good camera and battery, having a decent microphone would be also nice.

I think daydream puts sensors on the hardware, the same as gearvr.

I guess that has to be on board as minimum.

I hope that all sensors are located in the phone. Just take a look at Project Tango to to see the possibilities.
It would also be very beneficial to things like Argumented reality (e.g. Pokemon Go), GEO Location or activity recognition which are far from being perfect on our current devices.

Well, 5 days left. Really lookig forward for anything suprising.

Do you think the N6 is overpriced?

According to Motorola, it will be available starting at $649.
Because the other thread is missing a poll.
Not overpriced... Its just not underpriced
For specs compared to other competitors... Underpriced? NO
For a Nexus phone... Overpriced? Hell Yea
And google lost me with the mammoth size. WHy couldnt they just keep the size same as nexus 5 and bump the screen size a little (if possible). Otherwise, i wouldve loved a nexus (Nexus 5S ?) with the same shape style etc but bumped up specs
It's regular price. Which makes me sad. Since the previous Nexus phones were all underpriced.
T-Mobile Nexus 6 (32GB) - $650
Galaxy Note 4 - $750
iPhone 6 Plus (64GB) - $850
And all signs are pointing towards the 3GB RAM/32GB Huawei Ascend Mate7 being in the neighborhood of $700.
It's still in-line with other newly released high-end phablets. For what it is, it's certainly not overpriced.

considering the fact that i can buy the lg g3 for 456€ on amazon and will not have many opportunities to buy new nexus devices below google play price, at least not reliably available, this is overprized because it's a net prize while other flagships come with a gross prize tag which expires after the first hipe within week or even days

How about mi4 dude.
I think it's overpriced for a Nexus. The Nexus 5 was $300 cheaper than comparable devices. This thing is not, it's barely cheaper at all, and it really, really should be.
It's going to end up costing about £500 in the UK and that's pathetic for a Nexus. Part of the appeal of a Nexus is it is cheaper than the competition.
It's 'overpriced'.. compared to what previous Nexus owners are used to. But for that combination of software and specs, I would definitely pay for that price.

Poor battery life and awful camera, on the N5. No LTE on the N4.

Those aren't serious compromises. The battery life was average on the nexus 5. Name some devices that had exceptional battery life when the Nexus 5 was introduced? Also, the camera wasn't awful. It had some software issues that after being rectified made it respectable. Nothing seriously lacking.
And the nexus 4 DID have LTE. It was disabled. That is not a cost compromise. LTE bands are there.
Like I said, there were no devices that even came close to blowing away a Nexus device during their time. Especially to justify a 2-300 difference in price.
Hell to the yes.
Overpriced for a phone with no expandable storage. The Nexus 6 marks the end of a golden era. I think what's as equally upsetting as the price is not knowing who exactly is responsible for the price increase. Is it Google? Is it Motorola? Is it the carriers? I doubt it's Google, they make billions every year from advertising and this phone probably costs $250 at most to manufacture. Google doesn't need the profits from their Nexus line, they could very well lose money on the Nexus line and they'd still end up profiting at the end of the year.
Yes it is overpriced...
#1. Its a nexus device. Ever since the 2012 N7, the nexus name brought high end tech at an affordable price.
#2. Its not made by Apple. Both Samsung and Apple over price their devices but only Apple devices price don't depreciate quickly. I got my Note 3 for about $700 and now I'm struggling to sell it for $400. The N6 will be 450-500 by 2015.
#3. Its just a big phone. As ****ty as touchwiz is (main reason why I'm selling my Note 3) , it was built for phablets. AOSP doesn't have any special phablet features nor does it have a stylus to use.
I HAVE TO HAVE VERIZON because of where I travel so I have an S5 but I still have my OnePlus One and I will keep it. For the money I don't think its that big of a difference to the N6 and yes I know, the invitation BS with getting a OnePlus One but its still a great phone.
The issue is the Nexus line had been an awesome affordable android device. If motorola had released this device and it was not a Nexus it would be okay at $649, but because people have come to expect a lower price point for Nexus devices people are going to look at other options. A $300 price increase is ridiculous. Yes it has good specs, but the specs aren't a bigger upgrade than the n5 was over the n4.

Honestly this is my biggest concern with this phone. I just hope we get to see multi-window soon.

Still worth buying?

I'm eligible for an upgrade and, considering how my OnePlus One is holding up at this point, I should probably do that soon. Looking at the phones available, the 6P has most of my interest. I'm wondering if it's still worth getting, ignoring price so I won't mention what it is, and if there's anything I should know about it before going into it.
Thanks folks!
If you buy it with a good price point in your country.
The new Nexus phone 2016 leaked spec. did not look good for me.
May be I will continue to use my 6P until next year.
After seeing the leaked specs, I've decided to buy the 6P. I used to use the Nexus 6 and I find the 6p to be a much better phone. Better as in battery, screen, and the feel of the phone. I love the Nexus 6 but I think I just found the perfect phone and thats the 6P
My 6s broke buddy had this for sale 400 brand new with the watch and project Fi best investment
I'd probably still buy it now. The new Nexuses don't really interest me so this phone would still be my next purchase.
great to read these opinions, after having the screen break on my Mate7 i took the step to come back to Nexus again(I really miss my N4). good to know its still worth buying
It does have staying power, especially on XDA!

Best phone for +-300

My little cousin is looking for something in the range of 300, I'm pushing them toward swappa and telling him to research some things that he has enough money for but can you guys find something you would recommend for that price range? I'm leaning towards a Nexus 6 because I loved that phone. He brought up HTC m9

I would be really wary of buying a used Nexus 6P. There were obviously quality control issues with this phone. Too many people with boot loop and battery issues who need to RMA. Without a warranty you could end up with a paperweight.

Moto G4 Plus looks really good for a $279 price tag. The one major drawback is no NFC. But he can get a brand new phone with decent specs and a warranty.

I had a g4 plus (moto) before i bought a nexus 6p. All i can say is it is one kf the best phones that i used.
No issues at all. Running great up to now.
go for moto x pure edition 64 gb with great dual speaker at $260 best buy on sale
Depends what carrier you're on.
The Google Phones get updates faster than the moto phones of course. I would recommend the Moto Phones if he either a) knows how to unlock bootloader and flash custom roms, or b) doesn't care about stock updates. Moto is generally notorious for lack of updates.
If you're on GSM, could always get a OnePlus device.

Nexus 6p is great and in many peoples opinions one of the best phones currently out. It is very customisable and easy to use with good battery. Also if your cousin is into nodding then this is one of the best phones for stuff like custom roms etc. I would highly recommend this phone because last I checked it was around 300. I bought mine from the google store almost a year ago for 300-320. Can't remember exactly. Good luck searching.

better than 6p.. i was referring to front speakers of moto x pure

x4 vs pure

so i have a question for everyone.
being that the delays are significant for updates and we havent seen an update since february, the delay on this is like a middle finger to us MXP users with just a 7.0 update. so i have a question.
would you sell the pure for the android one x4? and why or why not?
Android One edition? Yes. Google is handling the updates, so you shouldn't have to wait a year to get an out of date OS. But I am not in the market. My Pure still works. I would still be using my phone from 2014 if I didn't shatter the screen. Twice.

Loaded question... would I sell my Pure to get a X4? Absolutely, if I could get the X4 for what I sold my Pure for...
Otherwise, I see the X4 as G5 Plus with a few golly gee whiz-bang add ons and that's it. All the Android reviewers keep ohhhing and ahhhing over it, but I just don't see the big deal at that price point... If it was $100 less, maybe.
Just an FYI... I sold my 32GB Pure in mint condition with 3 like new brand-name cases and a couple extra tempered glass screen protectors for $180 a month ago, and I was actually pretty surprised I got that much, would have taken $150 or $160 just to get rid of it, started asking $200 and it sat for a month with no interest.

Unfortunately, once these phones hit 2 years from release, the price plummets... I usually use Swappa as a good reference for prices, the 64GB version is averaging about $217 as of August, and I expect the September price to be closer to $210. (Ignore the $240 recent price average for the 16GB model, it's obviously a glitch).
Good luck though, depending on your local area that price could vary quite a bit. Around here cell phones usually go a tad on the high side, so take it for what it's worth.
I would not go for any moto again after x style, simple answer.

Eh... Still tough to ignore the value in a phone that has an unlockable bootloader, (mostly) pure Android, quality build and specs. And for US users, the Verizon and Sprint CDMA network compatibility.

And also to top it off, those stereo front firing speakers! Lol
snapdragon 630 it is.. better than 625 and 626 tho
it has Bluetooth 5 with new feature which i guess everyone knows+it will have a better camera than mi a1 and g5s+
it's android one (we can atleast hope for android q)
it has it's own camera app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.motorola.imagertuning_payton&hl=en
so we can expect better pic quality+sharper img's
but only things missing are dual front facing stereo speakers , 4k display and main thing moto maker!!( i actually hate the new upcoming moto model designs)
if it's below $300 i would go for it straight up!
This is part of the reason why I would not go from MXPE to X4. Graphical performance is important to me, and the Adreno 508 in the X4 is not very impressive. If you check out the offscreen scores where both devices are rending at the same resolution. Onscreen the MXPE runs at 1440p and the X4 at 1080p, so the X4 isn't rendering as many pixels and still can't beat the pure by more than a few FPS at best.

That 5.2" display is kind of meh to me. I think anything smaller than 5.5" or so would be hard to get used to after using this 5.7" one for a couple of years.

It's not... First few days felt odd, but within a week using the big screen seemed awkward after using a G5+.

Worthy Successor to Nexus 5X?

OK so the N5X is 3 years old now... any new phones out or coming out that are similar in price (budget-mid price range), and will have similar custom ROM support?
Just curious, as my N5X is still going strong, but there seems to be a roadblock on getting Android Pie to be fully functional in the few attempts I see (encryption?)
I've been keeping an eye on the new Nokia #.1 devices, and other similar specc'd phones.
Thanks.

I replaced my Nexus 5x with an Essential PH-1 on Prime day. This is the first non Nexus device I ever owned but it's very much a spiritual successor to the Nexus lineup. I am waiting for it to go back on sale again so I can pick one up for my mom.
I would consider something like the OnePlus/Oppo if it were available on Sprint but unfortunately my device selection is limited being on this provider.

Those are still pretty spendy at $400+. I'm looking for the $300 or less range, same as the 5X was. I really can't see spending that much for a phone, as I'm not quite as hooked into it as some seem to be, I just need a nice reliable device I can customize easily like the 5X.
Nokia 7+ or Xiaomi Mi A2. Both Android One.
Nokia 7.1 (processor isn’t very good though), Nokia 7.1 Plus (awesome if launches globally near China price) or Nokia 8.1 (TBA).

I did... a little quirky, kept locking up, other little issues. I don't think Pie will be viable for the N5X in the long run.
Right now I'm running latest Oreo stock but rooted with Magisk and Franco kernel.
I'm asking about new phones, not ways to keep my old phone running.

you can try the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE or The Pocophone F1 the Poco has a flagship specs with snapdragon 845 but its camera is not pretty good because Xiaomi just nerf the Poco's camera in the stock camera so you have to install a google camera. Mi 8 SE has snapdragon 710 which is quite rare and according to some people, it's a Snapdragon 845 with a weaker GPU.

From everything I found, at that price point, the Pocophone is the best one, anything cheaper is way worse and not many things a little bit more expensive like at $400 or $500 are still not as good as it is. You don't really have to worry about warranty if you buy on Amazon though, if Xiaomi don't give you warranty, Amazon will as well as the resellers so don't worry about that. Bellow that 300 bucks, you may also get some other Xiaomi phones with good specs but most of them are using snapdragon 6xx which is not quite good.
Essential phone is truly the lowest price replacement of good quality.
I wouldn't recommend that pocophone for anyone in America because it doesn't work on Verizon or Sprint.
The pixel phones are all decent, but they have major hardware issues and look ugly.
LG makes the best looking and some of the most feature rich phones, but can't ever update software. (V30 is just an awesome phone form factor tho)
If I had to recommend a few replacements these would be it:
Galaxy s8 or newer Samsung flagships (TouchWiz is better than stock Android in 2018 amazingly)
Essential phone
LG v30*
Oneplus 6t (No other OnePlus phones though because the rest are beat by Galaxy s8/s9 and the essential phone at every price point)
*For v30 you must be a regular headphone jack user. That quad dac is amazing. Makes a $10 pair of headphones sound like $150, and regular car speakers sound like a full on audio upgrade. Being an LG there is next to no software support and no dev support, but the audio almost makes up for it.

Other option to consider however....
Downgrade to upgrade.
The 5x sucks you'll be happier with a Galaxy note 4, note 3, or a Nexus 6 as they are all faster and better phones in 2018 due to having 3gb of ram.
Plus they have great dev support and in the note devices extended batteries that can last a long time. Going from a Nexus 5x to any flagship with 3gb or more of ram in the last 5 years is really a massive upgrade. That 1gb of ram is the difference between usable and unusable.

Thanks for all that, Nascar. Lot's to consider, but the 'downgrade to upgrade' is a valid point. I was eyeing some refurb Galaxy s# phones, maybe I'll go for that.
I have bought a OnePlus 6 with the discount from Black Friday (and that will be valid until Christmas, I think). It is exactly the same price as the Nexus 5x 32gb originally.: $429,00. In this sense I think it is a proper successor. It is a little big, though.
And I disagree with the post above. The S8 is a great phone, but it is worse than the OnePlus 6 in most aspects but the camera.
