Serious connection problems with my note 4 ...Desperation. - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently bought a second hand Note 4 in absolutely immaculate condition and at first it worked really well.
then ......
I started being told by friends that i wasnt answering my phone i said that was strange as i hadnt been away from it so i rang the phone myself and got a ringtone on the caller phone but absolutely nothing happened on the Note 4 (no vibration / ringtone ) also no data although it showed full signal bars for both. A reboot made it work again but this now keeps happening and the only way i become aware that it has happened is if i try to access a website on data when it will say connection took too long. this happens maybe 15 to 20 times per day at random.
Occasionally for variation it will show no signal or network and when i go to search it says insert sim card to access network services.... again a reboot sorts it temporarily.
so far i have tried
1. new / different sims
2. running in safe mode (all 3rd party apps disabled)
3. sponge on top of sim holder applying pressure)
4. clearing partition cache
5. Full factory reset
6. flash new rom
7. button press (home for 2 secs then start for 15)
and probably loads of other things i cant remember so now im DESPERATE !! has anyone any idea what this could be its a UK spec 910N phone IMEI is valid i have no warranty HELP me please

Are you sure you have the model number correct? Haven't heard of a Note 4 910N variant before, and the only place I can find it online is on foreign (non-UK) websites such as http://mg.olx.com.br/regiao-de-uber...lares/samsung-galaxy-note-4-sm-910n-128225596
Apart from that, a Samsung 910N comes up as a monitor! (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-SM-910N-TFT-Monitor/dp/B0002TNVGO)
Just FYI, I'm using a N910C in the UK on EE with no problems.

My mistake it is an SM-N910F-32GB

Are you having issues with bluetooth or wifi as well? My note 4 N910W8 has issues with keeping a stable bluetooth, wifi or LTE connection, and occasionally drops calls.

The batery
Try with other batery, i know, that is crazy but, in my note 4,it fix network conection problem. (no network, no sim, no registered on network) my problem start after use a motorola turbo charger, it damage my batery and (and the signal) but just changing batery the network was fixed. Sorry for bad english

I commented that I was the same . wanting to find network said without sim . Sometimes if I showed sign, but with only emergency warning . Change my battery and everything is perfect but I can not understand that relationship can have . Hopefully I can help my advice

Randomly presenting SIM pin code screen when waking phone from standby

I've had a repeated problem (around 4 times so far) where my phone mobile radio must have died/reset while the phone was on standby with the screen off. When I wake the phone I am presented with the SIM pin code request screen. Usually entering the correct code reserects the phone. However last occurance it refused to accept the correct code so required a reboot to get it to work again.
Anyone else seen this?
I'm on O2 in the UK fyi.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
ok I'll guess the answer myself...
I guess this is related to the random reboots people have been experiencing primarily on calls. I note some people say the phone can reboot while on standby, since I 'had' SIM pin code enabled this was as far as the reboot while on standby was getting. I've removed the pin code request which will mean I guess the phone just completes the reboot without requiring my input.
I'm hoping this is fixed with any update to the reboot during active calls issue that google confirm they have repeated themselves.
I've just had this happen on my Nexus S. What service provider are you with? I'm with Tesco (O2).
I'm O2, 30day rolling contract. Basically I've disabled the SIM Lock now so hopefully until the standby or call (not experienced this one yet) reboots occur the phone will just restart without my intervention required now.
Same here. After connecting the phone to the charger yesterday evening, this morning the SIM Enter PIN screen showed up (like the phone did a reboot overnight).
After checking the system services, I noticed the phone hasn't rebooted, because the services where running for more than 12 hours.
So the SIM Enter PIN screen showed up without reboot. I think a no-signal situation has preceded before this screen showed up (and maybe the GSM module has got a total reset).
This is on Telfort/KPN, The Netherlands.
Interesting ArnoutVos.. these were my original thoughts too since every time I've had the phone next to me and not seen it reboot just present me with the Enter SIM Pin screen. I just naturally assumed I was getting the at standby reboot some people had seen.
I've got the same problem on t-mobile. Probably about 6 times in 2 weeks so far. I've also had it where the signal bars at the top just show grey with a little cross by them and the only thing i can do to sort it is restart the phone.
It also drains the battery like mad whilst in this state.
I also had this 2 times (only had the phone 5 days)
That is, i turn on the screen and i have no signal, I dont think my phone has been restarted, as i dont see the sim pin screen, it has just lost the signal/radio died. And nothing seem to restore the signal, i've tried switching from 2g and back, only thing i found to get the signal back is a restart..
i have had the same problem with the signal dropping out on me all morning. sometimes i can make calls sometimes i cant and sometimes rebooting helps sometimes not. today i had the sim card replaced just to make sure and i thought it helped but it just did it to me again. its really frustrating...
I had the same problem about 10 times during the last week. It seems to correspond with the creation of Radio_dump files in the /sdcard/ dir.
Nexus S, Android 2.3.3 Root
I get the same issue on A1 in Austria, not sure what's causing it, but it is annoying.
Let me give my 2 cents:
Getting this same thing happening all through the various combinations of roms and radio firmware, device is Nexus S 9020T, network is T-Mobile in Croatia.
CM 7 with I9020XXJK8 radio
CM 7.0.2 with I9020XXJK8 radio
Blandroid 2.3.4 with I9020XXJK8 radio
Blandroid 2.3.4 with I9020XXKB1 radio
Sometimes there is no pin input screen, so if I don't notice the little icon in the notification bar I'm completely unavailable to calls and sms's. During the time if the Wifi is on it will continue functioning normally, and radio dumps get created.
Will give newer radio firmwares a try before I start crying in my pillow.
Edit: don't know if it happened with stock android 2.3.3 which came on the device, didn't have it on stock for more than 15 minutes.
Alas and damnations, again mobile network radio fail, this time with
radio I9020XXKB3 and blandroid 2.3.4, so issue still present.
Only fix is reboot, airplane toggle does nothing. Does anyone else in europe experience this with a USA T-mobile version nexus?
Giving I9020XXKD1 a try, still with blandroid now 2.3.4p1. Keeping my fingers crossed!
Well well...seems to be a common pattern, as its happened to me a few times also in the last week. First time ive experienced it also...just over a week.ago. cant remember which rom i was using as i.change quite often. May have been a new 2.3.4 mod or just 2.3.3 im not sure. Not a good thing obviously but not a big issue so far. Hasnt happened again since about 3 or 4 days ago now.

Such problems can occur when the SIM is disconnected from power or from reset line or has technical difficulties making it reboot.
Power or reset line can be disconnected if you have your connectors inside your Nexus bent. This can be tested by shaking your phone heavily in all directions. Be careful not to drop it. If the Enter SIM or the Enter PIN dialog appears, It's most likely a mechanical defect of your phone.
If the SIM is broken it may be reset itself. You can't really test this. Maybe something appears in the system or radio log. Another way would be to place your SIM in a known-to-work phone. If similar problems occur it's a broken SIM. You should call your provider to send you a new one.

Those are some good advices, thank you.
I would rule out bent pins as the cause and also no amount of shaking produces the problem, and the problem happened always when the phone was on the desk (and connected to wifi for what its worth).
However, a broken sim - maybe. I haven't had any problems with it so far in any of the 2 previous phones and I'm careful handling it, but the radio log suggestion is excellent.
I will definitely go through it next time it happens ( its "adb logcat -b radio" so others don't have to search for it)
Does anyone got a solution on this?
I found today about 10 - 15 dump-files located in my SD-Card.
Its probably caused by an App which we all use... but i couldnt figure out which one...
is there a dump-debbuging programm which i can use or something else?
It's kind of interesting
Using a Nexus S in Austria (T-Mobile)
I've "solved" this by disabling the PIN altogether and setting up a script to run when the network is changed to delete any radio dumps:

It doesn't seem to matter which ROM, radio or kernel I use....I wonder if this is a hardware defect?
sorry to resurrect an old thread, but this is to report that on my sns on pete alfonso's 4.0.3 rom and matrix 14.5 CFS and KF1 + KD1, I still get this problem of the radio dying.
has anyone found a solution?
to be more precise, the mobile network connection (calls and data) randomly dies and the only way to get it back is to restart phone. airplane mode doesn't help.

"No service" constantly with any SIM

Hello guys , I'm having some real tough time here with my nexus 4 ,
It arrived brand new from Google just couple of weeks ago and in the past few days
it won't get reception - at all .
The device did'nt go through any change , it just stopped working at that aspect .
It came with 4.2.2 , it stopped working properly (constantly lost reception) around 4 days ago ,
then I updated it to 4.3 through OTA thinking it might be related , then it worked fine a bit
and got bad again really quickly , and since then I can't get any reception .
IMEI , baseband shows just fine
Here's what I've tried -
* Going back to 4.2.2
* Changing baseband (tried 0.33 , 0.48 , 0.83 and 0.84 - nothing works)
* Checked IMEI thinking maybe somehow it got blocked accidentally - IMEI clean
* Changed ROM (now on CM10 nightly)
* Changed kernel
* Tried 4 different (properly working) SIM-s
* Tried tinkering with the CPU speeds - lowering , highering , tinkered with other hardware via available settings
The device did not fall , nor was it defected by water or anything I can think of .
Logcat -b radio dump attached (basically , shows constant exception - "RADIO_NOT_AVAILABLE")
log.txt -> When nothing works
log2.txt -> A maneuver I just found out , that altought wont give me service - it at least shows me the carrier name
and then goes through "No service - CARRIER" -> "CARRIER" -> "No service CARRIER" in loops .
I did it like this - turned airplane mode on , called an emergency number twice , disabled airplane mode ,
Ill do it like once or twice and then it shows instead of "No service" - "No service | Carrier" ,
then I try to call the emergency num again , it will always either show "Mobile network not available" or "To place a call, first turn off airplane mode." (even if airplane mode is not enabled for some reason ?)
But it gets no service whatsoever .
Is there anything I can do ?
This phone was a gift for me , it was brought from the US , I am not living in the US
so RMA-ing it back might take a month ,
maybe someone tackled this ?
Any help would be so highly appreciated ,
thank you so much !
Just curious, did all your SIM cards touch the metal contact of the sim tray?
flash latest radio and you should be dandy..
If your using T-moble, thats the problem.
Get att straight talk sim card for $45 and try them out for a month.
See if your reception improves.
I had the same issues, rma' 3 devices and tried many sim cards, did not fix it.
It fixed when I went to the att network. full signal everywhere now.
Hey guys thank you for your replies so much !
I have tried the latest radio (i.e. 0.84) , actually it was installed automatically with the OTA to 4.3 ,
tried to re-install it as well but thats a no go , no signal whatsoever .
I don't think the sim touched the metal part of the sim tray , I've actually tried to put the sim in
a friend's nexus 4's sim tray (as in I swapped the sim trays for a try) and it did'nt work .
I'm not using T-mobile , I'm not from the US , but I've tried 3 different carriers sim-s which are
working just fine in my friend's nexus 4 and none work here
If anyone has any other suggestions , please do tell , I'm really desperate here
Thank you again so much !
Hey guys , upp-ing this ,
Tried to put the new stock JWR66Y on it , thinking it might give me some luck ,
no luck there as well , no service whatsoever .
Well ... no idea what to do other than declare this a dead phone .
If someone knows a workaround that'll be amazing , waiting a month for the RMA
to take place would be really inconvenient .
I had the same problem. I got my second N4 yesterday and it would connect to 2G but not 3G. I tried changing sims with another N4 user and it still wouldn't connect. I brought it back to LG (There isn't a playstore here) and they replaced it for me. It works fine now.
I have the exactly the same right now.
What did you do to fix this?
I read that maybe 4.4 can fix this.
Thanks.
Pretty sure that we're still experiencing the same problem that initially showed with Android 4.3 and the Nexus 4's radio (problems with MVNO support). Radio occasionally crashes, and toggling Airplane Mode can cause the device to reconnect for some amount of time before the radio crashes again. Really frustrating.

Trouble with phonecalls

Im in Norway with Telenor subscription. When my Edge+ is LTE/3G/2G (auto connect) Im experiencing several issues:
1. During phonecalls:
- Several times during a call, I can hear the other party, but they can not hear me for several seconds
- The sound become "static", and the phonecall ends.
2. During browsing:
- Page never loads
I cant find any system in these problems, they can happen in places with good reception, or it can be during driving (handsfree).
But all these issues disappear if I set the phone in 2G only, then everything is working perfectly.
What I've tried:
- Reset APN
- Enter APN manually
Any suggestions?
I'm in Norway too but with NetCom. I've used my wife's Telenor SIM card in my Edge+ a few times, not really noticed any difference except for slightly worse sound during calls. Har du ringt Telenor?
I have the same problem. Are you rooted by any chance and have recently installed viper4android?

No, Im not rooted, and running stock firmware. Ive not installed viper4android. The problem has been there from day one
Hmm... I'm rooted and have Viper. Are you locked to Telenor? If not, try and loan a Netcom/Djuice/Chess/whatever SIM card and test - at least then you should definitely know if it's a device problem or a Telenor problem.
What's your signal strength (Settings>About phone>SIM card status)?

I'm not locked, so I will try a simcard from a different operator. When I have auto connect (LTE, 3g 2g) its constantly shifting between H and H+.
Where I'm now, the signal strengt is stable on -51 dBm 31 asu (Mobile network type EDGE).
Switching to (LTE, 3G, 2G) its -65 dBm 24 asu (Mobile network type LTE)
I can confirm having the same issue #2 as OP in Sweden with Halebop as my carrier, but I only got it once and since then there has been several security updates so I though this issue was one of the things fixed (thanks Samsung for not supplying a proper changelog)
I've just tried with two Telenor SIM cards from my wife and son - both work fine. I'd contact Telenor again and ask for real help... Their customer service is dreadful, that's why I switched to NetCom. Lykke til?

And that days i try everything (restart, everything reset, change network modes, remove/return sim card ets). Only calls perfect works in forced 2G mode these days.
Problem solved a few days later by itself.
My phone is rooted, and i have custom kernel.

I sometimes have the same problem. Called my service provider (Telenor) today. They are going to send me a new SIM-car, going to se if thats help, and Im going to test with anoter service providers SIM-card
Got the new SIM-card last week.. Same problem, people people can't hear me for 3-10 seconds several times during a phonecall. And data seems to "hang" from time to time. Tried a full factory reset this weekend, so are going to test more next week. And then try a Netcom SIM-card

Just to recap
I returned the phone, and I just got an email from the repairs workshop saying it was a warranty. I dont know if I get a new phone, or if they have repaired the old one.
update: got an email from repairs workshop. They did a network calibration and "reinstalled software". After that they tested the phone OK. I think I will get the phone this week.
I have same problem now, only work on 2g. When on 3g phonecalls hanging all the time.

Same problem here.
In general, the problem is not with the sim card neither phone hardware. The problem usually is with any app that we have installed. To ensure this, switch on the phone in SAFE MODE ( safe mode temporally turns off all user-installed apps). To do that:
1. Switch off the phone
2. Wait at least 1 minute
3.Press and hold volume down button AND the power button
4.Once screen lights up, you can release power button but you should NOT release the volume down button
5. Hold the volume down button until you get the lock screen
You will notice there is a Safe mode icon in bottom left of the lock screen.
Now try to do some phone calls and accurate if the phone call sound is ok. If so, you must uninstall all your apps and discover which one is making this problem

Are you talking seriously?? First of all, I think that finding out that the problem isn't neither from sim card or hardware, is a great new, and now you are asking which app YOU have installed is the problematic?! Lol ok, I suppose to believe you're naïve and I can help a bit...
It is not necessarily only one or the same app for both. Sometimes can be one in conflict with another also installed, one in conflict with the specific firmware of each one or one of several app's with low maturity (you can check it in Google play). I can give you an idea: for instance, periscope app is very problematic in android. But there are a lot of a lot problematic app's. So, as they are so much, there is only a solution if you don't have an idea: uninstall all of them ( phone hard reset preferably) and after this, install one by one manually (not restore any backup cause the errors come again). After each app installation, make some calls to check any call sound problem. When you notice the problem in call sound, the cause is in the last app that you've installed immediately before this. For next time, check with attention after installing any app if any problem appear and never install several app's in the same time to have time to notice problems in a narrow way...
Anyway, you can write here your conclusions
voilà

Losing mobile network

I have a stock t-mobile s7 edge device. It's losing the mobile network. I've noticed it a couple of months ago - it happened a few times but recently the problem is getting worse. It already happened 3 times this week.
Seems like completely random. Sometimes I notice it after I go somewhere with weak signal or no signal at all. Sometimes when I get back to an area with good signal it reconnects and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it shows the bars and says it's connected to t-mobile but 4g doesn't show up at all. So you can call but no internet. Sometimes no signal at all.
When it happens the only way to connect is to reboot the phone. Nothing else helps. If you try to connect to network manually - it can find t-mobile but unable to connect. just spins. Changing from lte to 3g or 2g also doesn't work.
I even tried to create a new APN - same thing.
Please heeeeelp...........
Last time this happened to me on another device, it was the sim card that had a problem. Have you tried with another SIM card?
No, but I don't believe it's a sim card related problem. Wife's phone has the same problem although less frequently. But she also travels less.
It looks like a configuration / firmware or maybe hardware issue to me.
I'm experiencing the same issue. It seems to happen when the phone loses signal completely like when deep inside a building. Then it won't reconnect to data or the network by itself.
From the first moment when I got my edge back in April I noticed that the radio performance was weaker than other phones. Then I got the Note 7 and same issue again. Then back to an s7 edge and the problem seems to be worse on this one specially after the latest software update.
Sent from my SM-G935T using XDA-Developers mobile app
My wife (s7) and me (s7 edge), as well as a co-worker (s7) are having this same issue.
Before it was happening occasionally, but after the last update its happening WAY more often.
Wiping cache seems to help with frequency, but still did not eliminate the problem. Hopefully it gets fixed with an update. I'm not sure how much longer I'll be able to put up with it.
Edit: I forgot to add a "simple" fix I've found that works almost all the time is to turn off mobile data, turn on airplane mode, turn off airplane mode, wait for signal, then turn on mobile data. Those steps in that exact order work for me most of the time.
So I've been having the same issues as everyone stated. The only fix is to reboot the phone, but who wants to that every time. I even changed the sim card!! I wish T-Mobile would get out of their feelings and start selling more flagship phones.
I have made the decision to jump to LG V20. I hope this issue doesn't exist with the LG.
I've just got my s7 edge and I'm sort of having same problem at home got 2 bars and sometimes goes to 4 bars but also wen I called someone the line was crackling but person said could her me fine so done a wiped cache and think it's sorted it now for the time being
(Edit ~ it's done it again could hardly hear person I was talking to)

Random signal loss

Alright guys, I am done with this. I am at unlocked international/UAE S10+ (SM-G975F on Exynos) which is kept uptades as soon as OTA comes out. Now I am on Build PPR1.180610.011.G975SFXXSASH1, baseband version G975FXXU3ASG8. Sometimes (like 2-4 times per day!!) I got this issue, where my signal is lost, and network gets disconnected (Screen 1 & 2). At the same time, for comparison, my iPad LTE is still connected, without any network issue (screen 3). iPad uses same carrier as SIM 2, SIM 1 is different, but as you can see, both are disconnected. Once I turn on & off the airplane mode - everything comes back to normal just in a second (screen 4). I tried wiping cache, wiping network settings, but it's not helping! The issue is, that once it's disconnected I have no idea how long it keeps this way, and nobody can call me during that time, that pisses me off. It seems like a software issue to me?
