At&t tether glitch - AT&T Note 7 Questions & Answers

Thanks to pedro2576
You don't have to be rooted I'm stock unlimited plan
Let me know if it works for you
I've been looking for ways to get the mobile hotspot active due to me having unlimited data on AT&T ( US ). To no prevail just like everyone I realize that at&t has block almost every possible way to use the mobile hotspot with unlimited data and it looks like a decent reliable root is going to keep changing as exploits are closed.
But....
I stumbled on this glitch so I had to share.
1. Turn your wifi on your note 7
2. Connect to a WiFi doesn't matter if it has Internet access or not )
3.Turn on wifi sharing in hotspot top right. 3 dots
4. Now connect the device your wanting to use. ( I used my Xbox ) ( I had to go into my network setting on my Xbox and configure a new connection)
6. Now once you've connected, go to " mobile hotspot and tethering WiFi Sharing Off "
7. Don't clear any notifications, And don't click the set up device.

works :good:

Is this only for people who are rooted? Because if I even try to turn on mobile hotspot I get an error message.

Yes it does! Look though your settings

Duh my bad I didn't click on mobile hotspot

I must be missing something, how is this different from normal tethering? I don't have unlimited but do have more mobile data than I can use and often let my daughter tether data through me.

This is for unlimited plans we don't get free tether

Can you explain how you're able to turn on mobile hotspot with an unlimited account? I just got my new note but I'm running into the same problem at step 3 when I get the "mobile hotspot is unavailable" error. Then it automatically turns it back off. Am I missing something or is this only popping up on my device?

First connect to a wifi, than under the quick toggle for "Moble hotspot" you need to tap the words "Mobile hotspot" to bring up next shade, than tap "More Settings" once there tap the 3 dots and select "Wifi sharing" than select "Turn on WiFi Sharing, than click the toggle to turn on hotspot. Once on click the 3 dots and go back to "Wifi Sharing" and turn it off and you are ready to go!

not sure if I am missing something but when I enable wifi, then click on Mobile hotspot and teathering, there are no 3 buttons on the top right corner

There isn't but as long as you keep that hotspot on you will be good and it shouldn't go away plus there is always wifi at a some truck stops

Got it. So the work around is to always keep it on. I'm sure there will be a small battery drain but it's worth it

Keep it on only if your going to be using it like trips and long rides

Does it really??? Post a pic or vid

Good find!
Not quite perfect yet, though. I was able to turn on the Hotspot and connect, but unfortunately I couldn't actually connect to the internet from my laptop once I was connected.
tried it, didn't work, nice fake though...
Not sure which part I'm "Faking". You have to go to settings and change flashlight to LED instead of screen, for access point if you're using windows 7 make sure its set as a home network not public and try changing the SSID name.

Running Vista, I connect fine to the phone, but nothing is routed beyond the phone unfortunately. Look forward to seeing this work, though. Nice simple fix to an annoying limitation.

Sorry, I take back what I said. I thought you were faking the pics for wifi by using another phone. on another note, linux does not see the wifi tether. but win 7 does. very odd...
I tried connecting my computer to the hotspot but the phone doesn't give out an IP address and there aren't settings on the phone to change it. Seems like tmobile change the stock build, eh?

Are you actually able to get onto the internet on Windows 7? Or just connect to the hotspot? My only Windows 7 computer Doesn't have Wifi, so I have no easy way to test that.

as for the LED flashlight the Power Control plus widget lets you do that, I would have said something earlier but thought it was common knowledge.

So internet sharing and DHCP are disabled as well.
I'll have to check out quick settings. I tried wifi tether for root with no luck. Saw some errors in the logcat for missing files, but think they are missing on my G1 too. I haven't dug too much into it yet.

Remember the wifi tether for root won't work until this device gets rooted. Try a hotspot app and see if the connected devices can surf the internet.

[Q] Free 3g Hotspot

Ok so I know that you can "hack" your way into opening 3g hotspot for the DInc but I tried doing the same process on the X and it doesn't work. Does anyone know if it is possible to get the "3g hotspot" for free? No I do not care about wireless tether or anything else that requires root. Yes I do know that I can download an app for wired tether. I just want to be able to unlock 3g hotspot for the DX. Thank you!

Yes you can. Team Black Hat had a flashable .zip that allowed for it to work without paying the fee. You do have to be rooted however, as this flashable file needs to be flashed through bootstrap recovery, which requires root.

Thanks for that but I'm looking for a way that you do not have to be tethered. It may seem silly because yes both my phones are rooted but I would like to see if there is non-rooted way. Thanks again.

I can't remember if I saw it on Xda, but in re-reading this thread, I think some people found that if they open the Hot-Spot app from Verizon, point a PC or phone to the "wifi hotspot" and then turn on airplane mode, then turn it off and go back and try to connect again that it will work.
Don't know if this has been patched in the 2.3.340 OTA or anything... may want to give it a try...
Rooting isn't hard. Download Z4root. Push a button, it does it all. Then download wireless tether from the market. Boom free wireless tethering. No hacking no cracking hard stuff. Root is easy these days

You are correct! This method still works unrooted.

whats your with using the newest wireless tether? it supports infrastructure mode now so you can use it with literally everything (and free!)
if rooting is your concern, as chad said, z4root will automatically do it from your phone in about 10 minutes. all you have to do is press permanent root.
Ok.... This thread was pointless. Yes I know 3g hotspot is called "tethering" but all I'm trying to find out is if you can unlock the 3g hotspot that comes on the phone from verizon. I do not want to download an app to tether internet or even one that will allow me to use my mobile broadband via usb.
If you do not know an answer to my question "How to unlock or hack the 3g mobile hotspot so that I can use it for free?" then please do not post. Thank you very much.
I'm not trying to be rude or mean, I'm just trying to find an answer.
EDIT: Also if you would, please read the other post's before you try to tell me something I already know. YES my phone is rooted and YES I said that in previous posts. Thanks
Turn 3g hotspot on then toggle airport mode on then back off again. Viola free 3g hotspot no hacking no special apps.

Yes you can. you'll need reprogram your phones parameter using QPST.
Hotspot activation
This works on the Droid X Verizon network:
Go to applications and click on 3G Mobile Hotspot
First check to see the settings by hitting menu and selecting Advanced
Click on Wifi AP mode settings
Security should be set to WPA2
Click on show password: You'll need this when logging on to your hotspot
Click save and arrow back to 3G Mobile Hotspot
Check the box to start application. Once it connects:
Go to your phone dial pad and enter this string:
*#*#4636#*#*
A screen will open: Testing
Press Phone information and scroll down to the button that says:
Turn off radio
Press this and wait for it to turn off
Then press it again to turn it back on. Try to do these steps quickly as the Hotspot will turn off by itself and you'll have to redo these steps.
Your hotspot is now activated as a WIFI and you can log on with your password.
The bad part is:
Keep your phone plugged in whenever possible because the battery will drain quickly and everytime you turn off the 3G Hotspot, you'll have to redo these steps.

Blue Tooth Tethering?

I have looked around and have not seen a rom that has bluetooth tethering working. I am wanting this to use with the galaxy gear.

Hey can you elaborate on this? I'm on Beans ROM and here's what I tried:
1) Turn off wifi.
2) *Enable bluetooth w/ visibility, add device from Windows 8 device manager, then disable bluetooth
3) Turn on BT tether from Settings - More Settings - Tethering
4) Right click BT icon in quick tray of Windows 8, click Join a Personal Area Network, right click the Note 3 and select Connect Using - Direct Connection.
What happens to me is that it says Connection Successful, and then immediately disconnects and shows a black timer on the Note 3 icon in Windows 8, then says the phone is offline in the bottom status bar. Anytime I try to connect it does that same. Maybe something with drivers? Thanks,
Nila
For it to work for me I had to disable tether provisioning. Try that then reboot and see if it works.

It works on the Verizon Note 5. Using it right now to post this.
FoxFi is working for me (Verizon) and at least lets me survive without rooting, although I'm starting to miss more features and stability with popular ROMs. I'm having more force closes and phone freezes than I've ever had on a rooted phone in the past.
My question is: has anyone vetted the FoxFi app? I understand that it has to install a certificate to accomplish it's goal. But has anyone tested network traffic and attempted to see if the FoxFi app is reporting network traffic or content to the FoxFi developer? It would be capable of doing this even when the FoxFi app is not functioning as the certificate remains. This could easily collect CC numbers and account passwords. I'm feeling like someone is watching me through the window at night.
easy thether works on bluetooth too.
It DOES NOT work on the ATT Note 5. Had to side load it and it will not turn on the hotspot. I refuse to pay another $30 for Hotspot function to AT&Thief so I would love to find a work around.

I just installed the app and it works. FoxFi use native tether program on the phone. I also have "Tether WIFI Router" that tethers directly. There are no real controls with FoxFi, but with other program you have to configure to make it work.
That problem I'm having, if I'm using FoxFi or the Tether WIFI Router, it disconnects my bluetooth. I can not seem to get around that issue. When I disconnect the tethering programs I have access to my bluetooth.
Let me know if you need the settings.

Even though the APN is greyed out and my APNs are stock. I can still use the power off method for hotspot.
Restart your phone, go into hotspot settings, turn off wifi sharing, turn on wifi sharing, turn on hotspot. It works for me.
When you turn on WiFi sharing, are you connected to an active WiFi network? If so, what you're seeing isn't tethering, it's WiFi sharing. Does this work if there is no active WiFi network in range?
What's the software version for the 5/6/16 update (e.g., PB5, PD3, or newer?
