I have a rooted nexus , and i want to update to android n , so i download an image , so all i have to do is to install the android n image from my custom recovery ?
or i have to do the same thing like root my phone again or something like that ?
and if I upgrade , i will have to root my phone again ?

1. What image did you downloaded? Google Factory Image? custom android ROM ? we need more details.
2. Usually when you flash a stock image you will need to re-root your device or use FlashFire app for example, to flash your ROM.

I download from Google factory image ,so if I want to upgrade so I have to flash the image and then to re-root my phone or if I use FlashFire app I wouldn't need to ?

Just be aware that if you flash the factory image as it is, i.e. no changes to the flash-all.bat file, you will lose all your userdata!!
As I mentioned, you can use chainfire's app to flash and keep root permissions but you have to know what you're doing or else you might end up having a shiny large brick.

This should give you a good start. Once again, be sure to know what you're doing. The FlashFire app is a very powerful tool and it can cause a lot of damage if you don't really know what buttons you're pushing.

Sometimes it's worth losing root and later on re-root/reinstall TWRP than to use a tool you know nothing about.
It's up to you.

Just use the guide and flash the factory image via fastboot (you can do so without wiping user data). Boot it once and then flash TWRP and reroot it. You will learn something and be much less likely to have problems.

I used flashfire to update from M to N. Root was saved and upgrade was smooth. You just need to update TWRP recovery yourself

To install, you will need to be on the latest OTA (camera update).
Fastboot flash the original system.img and recovery,img
You can then use the volume down key to select "Recovery"
Once in recovery, press the power button and volume buttons together to bring up the menu,and select "Install from SDcard"
You can then select the OTA, and install it. Your phone will reboot, and you will have to do this again from the new recovery. You should then be able to reboot system and have your new 4.4 Kitkat Moto X!

You don't need boot.img in either. Now, I don't know how the dev ed works, maybe it's just the exact same with an unlocked bootloader, so let me know how installing goes.

Dev edition you can install like any other device. The benefit is that you can flash custom files without recovery flipping its ****.

Put the zip in internal storage. Go into stock recovery, install zip, choose this update zip. Because one of the first things it does it flash a new recovery, you have to go into recovery again and install zip again (the second time around it knows it doesn't have to flash the recovery).
Of course, since this way uses stock recovery, you have to be running stock.

You need to use stock recovery. After the update u can install twrp and root again

Yes, you're going to lose root (the update will wipe out System). If you have an unlocked bootloader then it isn't a big deal -- just re-root after the update.
BUT don't try to flash this update with twrp installed. 1) I'm pretty sure it won't work anyway b/c it needs to verify that your System is stock and, at the very least, installing twrp changes the install-recovery script which is in System 2) this .zip file is made to be flashed from a stock recovery, so I'm not sure it would work 3) as I said before, part of this update is a new recovery - I'm not sure how well the process would go if you started from twrp

I'm sorry, I've been assuming you have a Dev edition b/c you said you had twrp -- is that not the case? If you do NOT have a dev edition and you rooted via pwn- or rock- or whatever its called myMoto then NO, you will NOT be able to root after the update until someone releases another hack

PS: the "normal" OTA is downloading SO slow D: that's why i'm trying the one in this thread

Is it possible to update from 5.0 to 5.1 if i have unlocked the bootloader? I also have TWRP. I downloaded the 5.1 update, but when i want to install it the phone reboots and i get into TWRP menu. Is there any way to flash the OTA update without losing my current data on the phone?

Dealing with the same problem here.
IIRC TWRP automatically handled OTA updates in the past but it doesn't seem to be working anymore.
What was the procedure you were using before? You just installed as a normal zip from TWRP ?
For the ota to work you have to be 100% stock system, recovery, and kernel. I'd just flash the system and boot images from 5.1 in fastboot to update.

Not if you just flash the System and Boot images and remove -w from the Flashall.bat command to prevent the wipe instead of using the OTA. If you use the OTA, you will have to be stock as the previous posted stated, which since you are rooted with a custom recovery, would require you to flash the stock image, wiping your device, before you could run the OTA. This is the result of a change in the way Android 5.+ authenticates, which is why it worked previously. It now checks the whole partition, and one byte out of place will abort it.
That said, you can always backup your phone (which is a good thing to do anyway before flashing/upgrading) to prevent data loss.
Edit: Actually, thinking about it, I think Wugs added a No Wipe option to his toolkit, just flash System and Boot images from there is likely easiest for you.

To be clear, you do not need to relock your bootloader. You can just flash 5.1 and then root and install a custom recovery like TWRP again, yes. If you are not familiar, Wug's NRT make this a breeze. Once you get 5.1 installed, just hit root. It will install the latest TWRP version and root/install SuperSU and Busybox for you.
I need to download the whole 5.1 image from Google. And flash just like any other ROM from TWRP ?

This is probably a noob question & I tried to research around myself. I've always rely on someone making a flashable stock rom for every update. I usually keep my phone rooted but run on stock rom with xposed. There's hasn't been a stock rom for m build published. Could anyone share the appropriate adb manual update instructions without factory resetting my phone? Thanks in advance.

I think only when you unlock and relock the bootloader is when it'll erase data.

Using the flash-all batch file in the factory images will wipe the device, but you can do it manually without wiping.
Do I need to flash everything if I want to keep root? Or can I skip bootloader, recovery, and boot image files since the k build boot image works with m build?

You can only skip the boot, recovery, and userdata images but all other files need to be flashed.
OK. How about bootloader file? Can I skip that too? Do I need to do anything new with su?

As I said, you need to flash everything except for recovery, boot, and userdata. Just follow the usual process to root the updated build.
So I flashed the 7.1.1 update and everything was fine. I then tried to root through TWRP with the most recent version of recovery and and SuperSu and when I went to reboot it would get to the "Google" splash screen and go back to the warning. I then tried to restore to my Nandroid that I made right before the 7.1.1 flash but it does the same thing. I ended up doing a factory reset, still looping. I tried flashing an old firmware but it still would loop. I got desperate and did a full wipe and then flashed the old firmware from September's update but it still will not boot. I'm a long time lurker I just don't post much. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Have you tried installing custom ROM, instead of a stock one?

I haven't tried a custom ROM. I'll try that if I get any down time at work. Also, I'll check for you @ArminasAnarion in a bit.

Well if you cant access twrp then your not flashing anything; did you try downloading the latest Nexus 6p factory image and using adb to flash it?? If you need help with that I can lay it out for you. Also there was an efs partition issue with twrp 3.0.2-1 and down so make sure your twrp is 3.0.2-2!

I can access TWRP. I haven't tried the latest factory image, only September's release. I just tried a custom rom and it gets to the Google screen but then loops just after the G starts to animate.

Make sure your using twrp 3.0.2-2; and download the latest factory image for the Nexus 6p (NBD90X) and use adb (fastboot) to flash that whole thing. Extract the files to your android sdk platform tools folder then run the flash-all.bat file. (If you are using a 64gb or 128gb device DONT DO THIS) Only do this with the 32gb model. If its a 64 or 128 model go here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206928 and go to sub section 10. How To Flash The Factory Images (And Return To Stock) (On post two) and follow that.

Downloading the image now. I'm familiar on how to flash stock images, they're how I usually do all of my updates.

Samsung storage, and I thought I was on -2 but it seems like I was on -1.

Newest image didn't work either..
Have you tried WugFresh's Nexus Root Toolkit? Not sure if it will work for your situation, but it has an option to restore to factory settings and unroot if you're soft-bricked or bootlooped. Might be worth a shot if everything else isn't working.
FWIW, I successfully updated to 7.1.1 NPF10C and rooted by using fastboot to flash bootloader, radio, boot, system, and vendor. Then used TWRP 3.0.2-2 to flash SuperSU 2.78 SR1. No issues.

You need to give more info. Is your boatloader unlocked? Why do you need to go back to stock anyway is something wrong? Do you need to save any data on the phone?

Hey... Just flash March factory image from Google:

Flashing instructions are explained at the top of this page. Now scroll down till N6P images. There are two builds, one is Verizon specific. It's written anyway.

One of my questions was do you need to back up anything. If so make sure you understand flashing a factory image wipes the phone completely.

Easiest way You need to just download Nexus root toolkit to your computer plug in phone and let the toolkit do the work it will flash the proper files and reboot the phone
Do not Re- lock bootloader until you have flashed back to stock or you will brick it for good. Or don't lock the bootloader at all for that matter and yes save all files photos anything to PC..Or flags drive before you restore cause it will all vanish
