Overheating issues with CM12 for i9500? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
I started using CM12 for my Galaxy S4 i9500 about a year ago. At first I didn't mind that the phone was overheating when I played games, or videos, or just turned on the mobile data. But it's become irritating now.
The keyboard constantly crashes when I turn on the data, so does chrome and all other google services. Can't even hold my device in hand when trying to play games cuz it just gets so damn hot. It's already cracked 4 tempered glass screen guards (Would've been more but I stopped at 4. They barely lasted 2 or 3 days each).
Is there any solution to this heating and mobile data issues? Is there another custom ROM that's better and more stable for the i9500 than CyanogenMod? Which one would you recommend most, and why?
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

All other custom ROMs are based on CM. So there is a high possibility that your issues are present on them too.
But instead of waiting several days for somebody with an GT-I9500 to answer, why don't you just check out the ROM threads and see what other users posted there. You'll have everything figured way faster.

I would've tried that but I already bricked the phone once trying to do so. Which is why I'm a bit scared of going down the wrong path, I'm not too knowledgeable in these matters.

I did not say to flash the ROM. I suggested that you read the replies from other users and then decide. Also read the first post, devs usually put then most known problems there.

Asus Tablet (TF101) after 1 year of use

Hello!
I bought my tablet, a TF101 16GB wifi, a year ago, when it just came out.
I also bought a dock since my desire was to use it for work. I take notes, use internet with a wifi mini router for mail, and other office uses. I quite never use it for gaming, only some browsing at home when I do not want to switch on my mac.
I had stock kernel (before ICS), rooted stock kernel, ICS (rooted and not rooted) and now I am trying Jelly bean (not official).
I also tried different cooked roms.
During this year, I often had a lot of problems (kind of problem depends on rom installed):
- random reboots;
- encryption unsuccessful problems;
- various kinds of hangs
and I always had to do a factory reset (firmware reinstall in a lot of cases) and trying to recover my backups made with different tools.
In this way I can confirm that I never have been able to use it at work because of its weakness.
Now, I cannot understand if it is an Android O.S. problem, a specific problem of MY TF101, a problem of ASUS tablets or what.
Previously I had an IPAD (first model) and I never had such problems (but I cannot do so much with it)...
What have I to do?
Sell it and buy another one?
Sell it and leave tablets world?
Sell it and buy another brand of tablets?
Warranty is expired....
Thank you for your considerations....
Chris
PS sorry for my english....
Hi,
I had similar issues. I've read somewhere that this is caused mainly by two things. NVIDIA drivers and slow flash memory of the tf101 (slownes of the tf101). So, if you get a good price I would consider selling it. The NVIDIA driver problem is causing the reboots because the CPU can't be brought back from sleep or something like that. A workaround is to use this app:
(Wake Lock - PowerManager in google play)
and set it to the first option, PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK. This drains a bit the battery, however I've got rid of the most reboots. Give a try.
jokob
My opinion would be that its an issue of ASUS firmware. Most (would say all but i dont use encryption) if not all of your problems would be solved by custom firmware.

I also have the TF 101 and have experienced many of the same problems, random lockups, FC's, etc. Since this was my first Tablet I attributed this all to the Android system. I had also intended to use this as a note taking tool for work but due to the instability I could not. I recently purchased the TF 700 as a replacement but ran into the same issues I also purchased the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 at the same time and used both Tablets side by side There really is no comparison the note is rock solid and super fast. The note taking functions are incredible.
My only real complaint is how little I've used the dock.. it cost me $150 and I basically use it as a battery or portable charger...
Yeah, I've experienced SOD and RR, but only since I've been using nightlies and non-stable roms. I've been considering changing tablets because my brother wants my tablet, but I think I'd rather buy him a new one because I don't think he can handle the flashing and ****..
For the record, it's been a little more than a year (I bought it around.. end of June, after a ****ty junior year, I decided to reward myself), but I still really like my tablet. Just not the dock.
That's to bad, only issues I experienced were rare lock ups and few random reboots. These were all primarily caused by the first release of ics.
I successfully used this tablet for school and my business. Not to heavy into gaming but did get slightly addicted to shadow gun for a time. My primary use for it lately is media and using QuickBooks mobile for proposals and invoicing while on the road.
I have had 3 tfs for the last year and all have had the same stability, all pre b70. I always flashed roms with nv flash.
I absolutely love this tablet, for the price, it's probably the best tablet around...or was for the last year.

Ok with troubles u got it's usually gone with wrong kernel or older version try update new kernel version.
I using this one nearly a year and I didnt have any trouble about them again. the beginning when I got it I have a lot trouble like you but when I update and try and try I find out those problems about kernel and ROM you using maybe doesnt fit.
Now I using Cyanogen 10 by RaymanXF, very cool now
sr about my Eng

I had none of those problems on the latest stock ics i only get these on nightlys?
its funny, that the problems that u guys comment and increasingly Complain upon about RR and Crashes... they happen rarely to me.. its all about the right choice of kernels and roms... Combine and find out which suits u the best !

I couldn't agree more... now with JB is running smother than ever and didn't had any reboots, SOD's... nothing :good:
Ive never had any real issue with my TF101. Bought in the month they were released in the UK, got the keyboard through the cheap deal. Stock rom, never rooted and always upgraded OTA without wiping anything.
Mostly used it for reading RSS feeds, emails and a few websites. With the odd simple game, nothing too stressful for it though so I suspect it rarely runs flat out.
I got the keyboard because I thought Id use it, But I think I last plugged the tablet into it about three months ago.
Ive probably had 4 OS crashes that Ive noticed and probably about the same random application crashes (mostly browser) The only app that always crashes in Angry Birds space. Every time I play a certain level it crashes part way though so Im stuck on that level.
The only annoying thing I remember is that the wifi doesnt always connect to my Mifi. But it has no trouble with my home access point so I think thats the Mifi rather than the tablet.
I wouldnt say its perfect but its been almost pain free for me.
I recently bought Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 and I was surprised how it has none of the issues the Transformer had. Don't get me wrong - the main problem with TF101 is slow NAND (causing lags when saving, updating etc.) and browsing experience. Apart from that it is quite brilliant. You have to remember that its the first generation of Android tablets - it had its problems and Asus is proving to have quite a few problems with quality control (TF201 was the worst example of this) and uses worse components to lower the price. Anyway - Note 10.1 is brilliant because it solved the problems I had - the browsing is very fast (like on my i7 laptop), no lags whatsoever and the stylus makes taking notes and drawing designs for new games much easier (I used to have a bunch of paper sheets all over my desk before with drawings, projects, TODOs and notes - now I use Lecture Notes for that).
I've had a love/hate relationship with my tf101...I love the keyboard...I can't remember the last time I removed it. Nothing beats a physical keyboard for me. The hate part has mostly been the browsers. It boggles the mind that it seems to be impossible to get a browser to just work...to do what a desktop browser can...every time, all the time.
Instead, to get the function of a desktop browser, I have 8 browsers installed. For the most part, my default is Opera...it works on most things and is relatively fast on most pages. Then, without warning, some page functions just won't work. Dialog boxes are a particular source of angst...as are videos.
Dialog boxes are an issue with most android browsers i've used...some work on some pages...some don't work on the same pages. Videos are completely hit and miss on Opera. I found the best, (and by that I mean the most reliable), browser for that has been the stock browser.
....until I stumbled upon a suggestion to try Boat browser. It has so far proven to be the most stable, reliable, consistent android browser and is my new goto browser. It's not perfect but it's as close to a real desktop browser I've found so far.
I know the video problems are with the browsers themselves since netflix runs flawlessly...in fact, almost everything does. I had some issues with occasional random reboots back in the first ics days but haven't been a problem in forever.
The random reboots on angry birds space isn't a real deal breaker...I can't think of any apps I use on a regular basis, (remember when we used to call them programs), that don't' work or fail on a regular basis.
It's the bloody browsers that have been my one consistent, overwhelming, holding myself back from frisbeeing this thing against a wall, frustration.
At some point, I'll try a new mod....it worked a treat keeping my Motorola Milestone alive and useful.
I even accidentally ran over this thing with my car and except for a slight warping of the body, not a thing broke....not even the screen..
I've considered moving on up to the infinity or some other tablet...if samsung makes a keyboard I'll really be tempted, but so far, this puppy has been a real trooper,..one of my least idiotic purchases.
After 8 months of no issues with my TF-101, I had to do a factory reset. My TF became unstable the last couple of weeks. It was constantly locking up. I thought it may be the kernel I was using (with stock .27), but no matter what kernel I flashed, the tablet was locking up every day even without overclocking. My guess it was one of the apps I installed recently. It wasn't too big a deal though. After wiping, I'm back to running guevor's kernel at 1.4GHz with no issues whatsoever.
I've bought my tf101 3 months ago and I'm happy. First month I had some problems related with suddenly app closing but it was solved with latest ics stock update (.27). Gmail was very unstable too but was solved with update as well. Despite of that i was very curious about root capabilities and custom roms. I still have a stable tablet, overclocked at 1.4. I have the keyboard dock too.
Btw hi, this is my first msg after being anonimous for 3 months xD
Maybe these problems you are reporting are related to hardware issues or firmware only present in older tablets?
Does stock updates touch something in the tablet that custom roms can't do?
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk 2
I got mine second hand from a friend and ever since I've had it, it has run rock solid! Now that Cyanogen is releasing CM10 nightlies for the device that are only getting better with every release I hope to get plenty more life from it until I absolutely have to replace it!
I am almost sure that I have a NAND hardware problem.
I tried to install UBUNTU. All is ok but if I try to update to 12.04, I always get the same problem while installing.
Problem raise always when a specific amount of free space is used.
I also noticed sometimes (also with Andorid) to have some problems writing files....
How can I diagnose if I have some bad sectors on internal memory?
TY

Hi can you give any advice please

Hi Guys,
Just recently got my shiny new S4 in arctic blue great, I know a bit about rooting and installing custom roms as I've done it to a fair few phones in the past but with my S3 I know there were a few issues with the bug and the older phones dying also with the samsungs there is the flash counter and modified issue so here's my question/s.
Currently what is the easiest method of rooting and installing philz recovery, I'm looking at installing the omega or foxhound rom/s.
Once done will this increase my flash counter and also place my phone in modified?, if so can I set this back after doing the above, so if I do have a problem its just basically installing a stock rom again.
Thanks guys
BTW I did first purchase the black mist and noticed that it had a heating problem I even sent it back to samsung but they said that it was fine, then sold and bought the blue version this is exactly the same if not worse and on antutu stability test the phone went upto almost 40 degrees, is this normal?.

Do you have the I9500? That has an issue with overheating. However 40 degrees is not an unreasonable for a processor / GPU being pushed hard. It may seem hot, and it's not great for the battery but it is not out of any reasonable bounds. Mine is I9505 and playing vice city etc. it gets damn warm!
Flash counter can be countered with Triangle Away.
Easiest: just search.
Actually all of your questions are answered several times on here, use the search function!
At the top of the forum you just posted on is this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2419762 start there.

Hi,
I have the UK i9505 version, had it in black mist thought there was an overheating problem, also had battery drain and it seemed laggy, so I sent off to Samsung, they basically said it was fine and the S4 gets warm from time to time which is normal. I ended up selling it and buying an Arctic Blue i9505 but it basically is the same. I cant believe a flagship phone with a 2gb ram and quadcore is laggy at times and I would honestly say slower than some dualcore phones i've had.
I love the S4's screen the camera is good quality but again takes an age to open and shoot, hence I'm hoping that a custom rom may fix a lot of these problems?.
I've had S3 & S4, HTC one and Iphone 5, all have their good and bad points shame there isnt a phone out there with, S4's camera quality (iphones speed), Iphone's speed and fluidity UI, HTC's speakers and style (superb) and S4's screen with iphones brightness, and S4's removable back with SD slot.
Someone please bring out .
With triangle away, if I root and install a recovery does this increase the flash counter and change the phone to modified?.
I will use search I always do just find asking the question easier, things like one click rooting and recovery are sometimes hard to find and you end up rooting manually and installing recovery etc when there are newer and easier tools out.
Thanks

The FAQ at the top has root instructions, probably the easiest way to do it. The i9505 shouldn't overheat, but defects do happen.
What exactly is slow, I've found this blazingly fast compared to my nexus 4 and comparable to HTC one? iOS is optimised and always looks and feels smoother to me.
A few things I found speeded things up:
1) Turn off the unlock animation. That is just laggy.
2) Enable developer options and change all windows animations to 0.5. Feels snappier to me.
3) Do not use task killers at all.
4) Factory reset after update
5) Turn off smart stay etc if not in use, same for multi window.
Triangle away should set you back on the counter and there is a post on how to unroot and return to 'original' status. I just don't have the link to hand (in work and BUSY!)
Best of luck!
Thanks Ross,
Well i've had 2 now both from phones4u new and its definitely hot at times both got warm with things like using camera and youtube, running videos etc. Surely I cant be unlucky enough to have had 2 defective units?.
I've also had the nexus 4 and that was fluid compared to this, i've tried using nova launcher but still not smooth, I don't use any samsung gimmicks and have heard about the animation will try that now, my wifes GS3 is smoother in my opinion.
I really didnt want to root and custom flash tbh just because if it is faulty and was to die on me and don't want to have the problem with possibly not being able to reset counter, hence the reason for asking peps out there to make double sure that its pretty easy to do. Samsung were absolutely crap when I contacted them about my first black mist S4, I used it on GPS satnav for 3 hours to get to airport for hols I had it charging in car also at the end it was boiling, as such the metal surround slightly moved and the phone had gaps on the side Samsung said this was fine and the heating was fine!!, the phone was only 5 weeks old, and it even had intermittent restarting problems and battery drain which I mentioned I couldnt believe their CS.

I think it may be 'technically' ok, but if you are getting a poor user experience you are completely right to return it. I do find it very warm but not overly so compared to other devices.
Where are you getting the slowdown / lag on the device? It's possible I'm just accustomed to it, but after the last update I found things a lot better. (I'm in Ireland so I'd say were using the same device, mine's black too!) There's a difference between lag/choppy frame rate/ slow down and it's not clear where your issue is. I've seen a lot of mention of lag but compared to my other devices I find this pretty nippy. Perception of it is what it comes down to. Some iPhones are slower but appear far faster due to smooth animations etc. The 0.5x did help me and it 'feels' faster loading apps etc. I do agree the HTC One feels smoother and more fluid, that seems to be down to Sense 5 more than anything, rather than actual loading times in milliseconds as it were.
I found nove VERY slow upon boot up but it 'settled' after a few minutes running.
I basically found tw to be jerky especially when you first put the screen on, things like widgets take a bit to load app drawer sometimes also lags a bit. Also internet browsing and scrolling is def jerky.
Ive got the arctic blue version now and love the look and feel of the phone. Just ran antutu benchmark again and its weird I keep getting different benchmark scores last one was 21500 prior to that almost 26000 why? My other s4 was the same inconsistent benchmarks. Also stability test showed heat started at 30 degrees and again just kept on rising to almost 40, plus worryingly it dipped from 140 to 70 in stability a few times.
Could you do me a massive favour and run antutu on your s4 and let me know what results you get out of curiosity. Im running latest stock firmware.
Thanks

2425 but it varies. The benchmarks are not reliable at all. And there's the whole Samsung benchmark debacle, it gets very hot as there's no thermal limiting. 48 Celsius!!
That doesn't sound right at all with the lag and widgets. Sounds like task manager is killing everything out something is pulling resources.
Factory reset? Are you running a rom or stock? Rooted?
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda app-developers app
Many thanks for doing that ross, 48 degrees! mine is cool then at 40, im running latest stock, I have factory reset although the animation at 0.5 has made it a bit smoother, thanks for the tip.
I havent installed any task killer or anything like that and just a few apps that dont run in background.
Hence was really hoping a custom rom would help with heating and speed, weird thing is with my black one it ran more smoothly in power saving mode almost like when on full power the processor gets hot and throttles??.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda app-developers app
I'm a bit out of ideas. I'll have a think. Have a look at how you use it, in direct sunlight all day, in a case that traps heat etc. Weird to get two that are like that, but not unheard of.
Get a battery app or widget and screen shot every now and then as proof if you need to return it.
Sorry can't do more.

Thanks ross, np yes im going to test more ive still got few days left on 28 day return so will make my mind up then unsure how good phones 4u are on replacements though. With regards to the heat if your is 48 then they must all run hot on antutu?.
Thanks again ross

All variants of the S4 run hot ... the gt i9500 a bit more especially with the first firmware ... updates made things considerably better ...
I don't think that u have a defective phone ... it's just the way S4 works since u also return one and they said it's fine, chance is it was actually fine according to the S4 standards ... antutu runs at max freq so it's normal to get hot ... also battery drainage can occur from many different things ... the most common one is apps sync in the background especially when this is done with 3G/LTE ...
If u are a heavy user and u don't like the heat maybe u should consider another phone ... or buy a case ...
Hi
I dont mind it running hot as long as I know that everyones s4 is doing the same. If I know everyones is roughly reaching 40 degrees on antutu stability test then fine, but if others are say 32 degrees then thats a big difference and over time my phone would run the risk of damage.
I will post a thread asking for people to post screens and see.
Thanks fir the reply

Note 4 [SM-N910F] : Considering moving on, lag and poor experience....HELP!!!

Hi Everyone,
I'll keep this short...I've had my Note 4 for about 10 months now. Generally I have to say I feel that I've been living in denial, I love the device from a HW perspective and also the S Pen features however the SW is just too damn clunky, laggy and slow. Right now there is 1 to 2 second delay before it responds to any gestures + this can be up to 5 seconds when launching the camera for example. Also when playing music via Bluetooth it is very choppy and cuts in and out of the track being played (I have tried this on more than 1 Bluetooth device and its the same). When updating to Lollipop it seems that the experience hasn't got better, infact probably worse. I've loaded another launcher (Nova launcher) to see if the problem was touchwiz however its still the same. Lastly I've reset the device to factory 3 times now, which helps however it doesn't take long for it to get back to its usual clunky self. With all of this in mind, I am seriously considering moving on to another premium device however I wanted to throw this out there to you all to see if there was anyone else who had experienced the same issues and even better had a resolution.
Should I root the device and install another rom or simply move on???
Any help is much appreciated in advance.
Thanks,
OB
Try root and try a rom. There are a few out there that have been through the paces
Try another rom, I'm on dn5 and my phone is incredible fast

Thanks for the replies guys. I have a 910F, sucessfully fully rooted it today. I am looking for a fast and reliable ROM which also has the S Pen features. Can anyone recommend one instead of trial and error. Must be 910F variant.
Lastly, do I need to do something to a bootloader or something in order to load the ROM? Apologies if that's a stupid question...I am still quite new to this and learning.
Thanks,
OB

What about your battery performance? I have the same model and it's very bad!!!
I had the same feeling when I got my N910F a couple of months ago (coming from a Note 2 which I felt was more responsive and snappy than the Note 4).
But then I upgraded from the original 5.0.1 to stock 5.1.1 and it's like having a new phone; no more lag, or stutter or delays. This is what the Note 4 should have been like from the beginning.
So I suggest you try first upgrading to stock 5.1.1, no root and Knox intact at 0x0.

My battery last around 9 hours with 3 hours SOT with very heavy use :
Youtube
Radio streaming
Music
Gaming
Many syncs (Outlook, Yahoo mail, Gmail, ICQmail, Instagram, Twitter, BBM, Periscope, Skype, Instructible, Facebook, Facebook messenger, Whatsapp, Line, G+, Path, GTalk, Hangouts, Mega, Dropbox, 4Shared, Box, Drive, Onedrive, Youtube, Sing!, and many more)
For Cloud storage I sync some folder on access using FolderSync.
Downloads
Web browsing for around 1 hours
Some note taking.
WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth is always ON
With medium usage it can lasts for around 13-16 hours.
With light usage it can lasts for 18 -20 hours
With very light usage it can lasts 34 hours max (only standby+music+5 minutes web browsing).
It used to be 42 hours during very light usage, but it's been 1 year so the battery is degrading.
I didn't mention phone call because many of my family members & friends use BBM/Whatsapp/Line/Skype to call me.
I only use a real phone call for less than 15 minutes a day so it's negligible.

Thanks,
OB

Searching a reliable Note 3 rom! Please Help.

Good Hello everyone,
a very long time ago I wanted to help my brother and flashed his Note 3 (N9005) with a ported rom. I wanted him to have a feeling like he got a new phone... anyway that kinda backfired because for a very long time he is using his Note 3 with the Camera crashing and FC, WhatsApp massage only receiving when he manually opens WhatsApp and Bluetooth disconnecting constantly! Not the best experience you can imagine and all because of me
The Problem we have is that we don't see each other often because of the distance. So when we meet I don't wan't to spend hours flashing and testing a rom. And I can't keep his Note for a few days to test drive it.
I really need help because I'm out of it and not really up to date any more.
Can you guys please recommend me a good reliable N9005 rom that is ported like N5/S7/N7 maybe? there are a ton of roms out here but I don't know which one is reliable and doesn't need fixes all the time.
Like I said a ported which is clean and minimal without any extra added mods and features would be perfect. Clean and simple reliable.
Thanks in advance guys :good:
RELIABLE
Then stick with Stock roms .

Yeah, I would suggest sticking with stock ROMS. But when it comes to suggesting an actual custom ROM, I suggest Phronesis Rom N7 v4.1
I've been running it for two weeks now and it's absolutely beautiful, it's like ACTUALLY having a Note 7... without the explosions of course.
An any issue you run in to, you can find an answer to in their thread. The only issue I came across was the audio quality and animation that got fixed by using the search feature in the thread
Agree with that rom.
But as OP is not the user its difficult to fix a problem from miles away .

MagMA NX n7 Port is best also when it comes to battery life you also use the debloat script to trim down some of its apps to get more juice out of it. So far one of the best N7 ports I ever tested (Aryamod,Norma etc.)
You might also want to consider the AryaMod S7E port, quite good too
You can also update his latest modem and bootloader currently PJ2

[Q] New Samsung Note 4 owner, things I should know?

HI all.
I'm a new Samsung Galaxy Note 4 owner! Recently upgraded from a Note 3. Phones are years old but are decently priced and still good phones when you're not looking for something too fancy.
Honestly, the Note 3 was the best phone I've ever had and was looking forward to a Note 4 upgrade (was looking forward to the fingerprint scanner, even if not the best, and to the metal edges)
Now, I'd just like to ask for a few pointers on this device. Any custom ROM suggestions? Anything I should know about?
I am doing my fair share of research, I've been reading a lot of posts regarding this device, posts that are months old, posts that are years old and I've gotten myself a general idea of what to expect.
But I think even with all this reading, I probably won't be able to compare what I learn from these posts to someone that has owned a Note 4 for months, possibly years! Which is why I'm posting this thread, to ask those who have had this device for a longer time and will probably continue to use it for a longer time since this phone is amazing!
I just want to ask you Note 4 owners, if you bought a brand new Note 4, what set-up will you prefer? Custom ROM? Stock ROM? Any kernels you would flash?
I know the best ROM will always be stock ROM, but is there any worth-while N7 ports for the Note 4? I'm a big fan of the off-screen memo, the smart screen capture (scroll and screen-recording that records gifs) and also enjoy tweaking the kernel (overclock) for smoother game performance. I've also read that the most common problem with ports is the fingerprint scanner. I'll probably end up doing the work-around since no custom ROM has gotten this fixed (from what I read it's almost impossible without leaving a lot of the stock ROM's assets which defeat the point of a custom ROM).
Currently, I am downloading stock EQI2 6.0.1 which is the latest firmware for the N910T variant. I know that the T-Mobile variant has it's own forum but I usually see that the "Samsung Galaxy Note 4" thread is the most active and sometimes includes things for the T-Mobile variant (was the same case with the Note 3, the T-Mobile forum was dead and the international forum was alive and well)
It's running 5.0.1 software right now, hopefully 6.0.1 is better.
Thank you for your time!
I kindly invite you to try the unified trlte build linked in the [ROM] [UNOFFICIAL] [7.1.2] LineageOS 14.1 [SM-N910F/G/P/R4/T/T3/V/W8] thread.

Thanks for your input, I am currently trying out a Note 7 ROM port, but if it doesn't work out I will try it out
Personally, I prefer to run the stock OS that comes pre-installed on my device and update the OS to the latest version provided by the manufacturer. As I know for a fact that Custom 3rd Party OSs do not have the best post imaging software. Which hinders the performance of the camera sensor on your device.

Been snooping around and messing with a couple of custom ROM's either with Note 7/8 features and S7 Edge/S8.
I really like the look overall to the stock Note 4 UI, but I seem to have a very bad luck with random reboots and some features missing (fingerprint) or not working (night clock).
I was really afraid my phone was doomed with the eMMC failure I keep reading about that plagued the Note 4, but I don't have any problems running stock.
Yup, I guess my motto came true. "The best ROM is always STOCK ROM", even if it looks a bit out-dated.
I'm currently running stock and a custom kernel I found for stock MM. I'm pleased with the results so far, just kind of wish I could boot straight in to camera with double HOME press
Best advice I can give you , owning the phone for 2,5 years, is to never use quick charge and never update the phone or flash custom roms while the phone is being charged.

That's interesting, the first time I've ever read not to use quick charge. What particular reason do you have to suggest this?

I am amazed you are not aware of the motherboard brick problem of the note 4 !
Do a quick search and read about the motherboard Emmc problem on a lot of Note 4s.
Cheers!

I did read about it, I just wasn't sure what was the root cause for it. So I guess fast charge is the culprit? Every place I read this people seemed to blame an update either from KK to LL, or from LL to MM. Wow... I gotta think about this one. One of the reasons I love this phone over my Note 3 is because of the quick charge. Man :/
Gotta think about trading that feature in for... you know... a FUNCTIONAL PHONE

IMO the culprit was a heavy update(eg. from lollipop to Marshmallow) being installed , while the phone was pluged in being quickcharged.
This pushed the temperatures to exceed the max threshold of a bad emmc solder on the motherboard on some specific batches of the note 4.

So you think regular quick charge should be fine? The phone doesn't heat up with regular quick charge, so I really hope it's safe. I know that just to be safe, I shouldn't use quick charge. But I guess I'll roll the dice.
I updated from LL to MM via Odin, so it wasn't quick charging :victory:

In my case , my phone gets really warm while being quickcharged even if I am not using it at all.
I live in a warm place though!
If you want to use quickcharge , I suggest you go ahead and use it but without using the phone during the charge.

I have an exynos version so can't tell you much about the snapdragon versions (also never heard of emmc problems on exynos devices, the only problem I have is IR blaster stopped working some update ago and never worked again since), but here's little general advice :
Stock ROM is perfectly reliable and very smooth with little customization :
I recommend a package disabler app like EZ disabler to get rid of bloat. I disable anything that doesn't have a clear use for me . If something breaks functionality I enable it back.
If you don't want to root you can use adhel to block ads in very efficient way .
If you do want to root I recommend magisk . It's the best way to do it because if anything goes wrong you can just uninstall it and everything is fine again , it doesn't affect system partition.
Also system less xposed works great if you use the proper version . I love youtube background mod.
In my experience you should never use apps that claim to save battery like amplify/greenify etc . (In some cases they drain the battery even faster with their continuous background services) The better way to save power is to not install power hungry apps in the first place or disable them with EZ disabler . Also disable animations and just disable functions when you don't use them : Sync/Location /Bluetooth etc .
Last but not least : download and use Samsung game booster : it's amazing for our old gpus : you can lower resolution/frame rates to make games more playable and battery last longer .
These were my quick tips . Hope you enjoy your new phone !

The only small problem I have with stock is that it looks outdated. I know visuals are the least you should look for in a ROM, should be more worried about stability and battery life, but I simply can't deny that visually, stock TW UI bothers me.
But I guess I'll have to get used to it anyway since all the ROMs I've tried have issues here and there, but most importantly I get random shut downs and reboots with most custom ROMs and I lose the fingerprint scanner.
As for games, I heavily play a game called Shadowgun Deadzone. It's not that graphics heavy, but I need it to run smooth. I haven't tried Samsung's game booster, I've only messed around with custom kernels and changing the CPU governor, overclocking, etc... and it runs fine for a little while, but starts chugging after a few minutes in.
If the game booster can fix this, heck I can stick with stock ROM without any problems.
When you say it looks outdated
Are you talking about the launcher?
If so why not try the many other launchers out there? Like nova launcher..

A launcher can only do so much. I'm referring to mostly on things like the notification drawer, the settings and stuff like that.
