Aren't most roms the same? - OnePlus 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know ROM development is hard and doesn't earn you money, but it really pains me as a consumer that most try to be original, yet do the exact same thing. Most of the roms I see are based in cm and have the same features, more or less. Why don't people try to do something unique, like miui, h2os and pure android which look completely different, despite being the same base, android. I know that not using cm as a base is risky, but artists in general should take risks, and I consider developers artists in the world of coding.

yes.most ROMs look the same.H2OS looks nice but H2OS isn't very good ,i think you can try flyme

You're right. Many cm based ROMs are just renamed cm rom with few extra add-on, but still any add-on require some testing and adaptation, that's what many are very good at.
Just like painting anyone can learn a techniques but few will come up with a new technique/master piece

It's not about trying, I already am on RR, sadly only because of customization, I'd love a h2os with customization options

Yes, but why work on something just because you're the one who coded it, if there's already something good enough out there?
I am a graphic designer and would love to get into a team of developers and help with concept and actual design, knowing they my ideas will help build an actual custom rom that may inspire others or be what some users have wished for.

That's what I said in halogen ROM on early days, why don't code something original, something that other can look and said what a great idea I'll add it to my ROM or I'll help... like pa, omni, du, cm did to earn followers

A Plea For Sanity: Samsung ICS Roms

I'd like to begin this rant with a disclaimer.
I am not an Android developer, or a Linux enthusiast, or an expert of any kind. All I am is a keen Android user (Since the HTC Desire) who loves customising my phone.
I am EXTREMELY grateful for all the hard work of the people who know more than I do (Developers, Rom chefs, etc) and I mean them no offense.
They are the ones who make buying an Android phone worthwhile, and this community relies on them.
Now, here it is: Why, Why, Why, can't we have a custom rom with the stock Samsung look?
There are some excellent custom roms out there, offering reduced size, performance improvements, improved customisation ability: The likes of RocketRom, MidTeam, Criskelo, and so on.
But every single one of them has a mismatched, ugly, patchwork of a theme, with elements of AOSP ICS, Galaxy S3, and god knows what else.
Many of them slap a black and blue status bar ontop of the Samsung framework, which clashes and looks horrible.
MidTeam used to have a zip file to restore the stock theme, which was great, (Thanks Maxicet!) but this has been dropped from the current version.
Please, I beg you, developers:
Please give us an option to keep the stock Samsung look on our ICS roms.
Or if you are going to do a theme for your rom, at least make it consistent, like the Galaxy SIII look.
Leave the theming to the people that know aesthetics, and keep doing what you do best: Making great Android roms.
Thankyou very much
+1
A stock custom rom would be great! Some ROMs have those elements that I really don't like (for example an ugly statusbar).
But wrong section dude

Stock samsung UI is ****, but I also hate clock on the center, like on Criskelo ICS ROM. I prefer stock android style UI. This option must be at all ROMs, and official stock too.
place a request for checkrom developer

there is StockLook Theme for Rocket ROM also....just the bettery icon is customized and of course the 15 toggle (but also in Stocklook)....and:
with really MINOR knowledge everyone can build a complete stocklook with NO theming modifications at all!!!!!!!! If you are not able to do yourself, start a request in theming section - this is 5 minute work to do complete stocklook
if i might just make a quick statement,
the rom by the devs were designed to the way they want it. not to how the public wants it. it was made specifically for themselves for their own usage but were kind enough to share their work for us here on xda.
for us to use.
u can put in some requests on how the theming or looks should be done, and it would be entirely up to them if they want to attend to those requests or not.
i'm no developer and hence i cant complain what i didnt pay for but instead got it for free.
they could've easily exercise the option of "if u dun like it, dun use it".
Cassies xlr rom is stock look
But in all fairness if you dont see summin you like.
Spend 5 hours reading on google and build your own. As eyebee said its not that hard to do and very satisyfying

I don't agree with you. This is manufactors, who don't care about customers and their opinion. ROM developers making ROMs first of all for us, not for money. We can donate them if we like their work and can ask to add/change something in the ROM. Too bad we can't do the same for manufactors.

Rom cooks make the ROMs for themselves (at least me and most of the other ones i know)...but they like to share their work and of course you are welcome to ask for additional features inside the threads - and not open an extra one.....
ya bro the keyword here is donate. not sell.
if the rom devs were like manufacturers, they'd sell it to u for a fee. but in this case, the rom devs willingly share their hardwork to you without asking for a single cent. the donation part is totally optional.
there is no legal contract binding here. and i will say it again, rom devs do not make roms for us. they make it for themselves but are very much willing to share it with us.
This thread is totally out of place and mind. Reported.

I've had an iPhone since about three months ago (because they were the only phones readily available to be bought used and without a contract), but have always kept up with Android. It doesn't seem like innovation stopped. What are we missing now? Cyanogenmod seems to be packed with innovative features, so does AOKP.
BTW, great signature.

I don't think any iPhone is in the works for omni at the moment
I felt what was missing was a team to implement ideas that have never been imagined by the average person, or have been thought of as to be "too difficult" to implement.
I feel this rom, and the team behind it, is the answer to this problem, which should open doors up in other teams, including cyanogenmod
And thanks

It WOULD be a feat to crack the iPhone's bootloader past the iPhone 3G and get Android booting on there, wouldn't it..?
So, the OmniROM will not just be another copy of another custom ROM? Now that it's being mentioned, I do feel like a lot of them just have the same features.Maybe that's why I'm not fully satisfied when I habitually flash new ROMS.

I work with someone who builds for the iPhone. I might get them to add omni support for it.
Omni is based on aosp (the stock source from google). From their patches are added to support an array of devices. Then new features are added. Seeing as it's a fairly new project (only been around 2 months), there aren't a lot of new features, however there are a few ones to note
They are adding true multi window support
The quick settings tiles are flipable
There see, so to be a new app called "OmniGears". I'm unsure about what exactly this will do, but it seems to contain rom specific settings
I hope this is enough to convince you this won't be a "copy of another rom"

Roms - too many?

There used to be a couple of rom choices for SP, they were very different, and it was easy to pick what you like, now it seems there are 57 varieties of each rom with subtle changes that most people don't notice.
Could everyone not work together instead of continually cooking up variants of stock or CM11?
Is it the lure of the thanks button and donations that make it happen?

Some CM's are for LBL and some are for UBL and now some UBL roms are catering for LBL support, also some CM's are a port of CM11s from the oneplusone and not stock CM11. Either way theres no harm in having more ROMs to choose from as long as you can find one thats supported and works for you.
Well at one point it was "too less roms"

i totally agree with you
developers should start working on stuff like MIUI and Liquid rom instead of just applying some tweaks and themes and calling it a custom rom
i think there are about 6 CMs, 10 stock roms which are all basically the same and all are good for LB or UB and are the same thing just changes in themes and whatnot

If he should keep his opinion to himself, you should do the same.I have been on these forums longer than you,so listen to me carefully.
If you want it simple, use cm11.It is minimalistic,no feature overdose, almost pure 4.4 AOSP.There are official nightlies for UBL,and weekly releases by MrSteve555.
if you want the 4.4 SONY rom,use RepeXpersiS,it is both for LBL and UBL.
If you are a pony lover, install AOKP.If you like paranoid character faces, install PA.If you want everything from CM,AOKP and PA in one package, install PAC.If you are a iPhone lover deep inside, use MIUI.
Every custom ROM has unique features, and by that I mean Mokee OS,Carbon ROM,Omni and etc.

Project Barlan M8 an AOSP wet dream

Just imagine a Rom with all your favorite Aosp features tied in with the sense framework like camera and tv etc I and some buddy's have teamed up to bring this to you you've got two experts in sense porting and an infamous aosp developer working together to bring you the user base an experience beyond anything that's out there. This thread is just a small teaser PROJECT BARLAN will blow your mind when we're in gama stages. I just decided to post this for some hype to spread I doubt most are ready for what we have to offer
AOSP with HTC framework, camera etc., might be enough to tempt me away from Sense ROMs. Bring it on. Happy to give it a test when you get something together.
if it will be really possible to use the most Framework and apps such as boomsound/ HK on aosp and also the cam i would definitely Flash it asap
The three of us have three different concepts for how we can do this we are currently just tossing around ideas between each other, currently I'm running IC with most gpe parts plugged in. So aosp feel with Harman kardon and HTC camera but I wouldn't release this pre alpha before fixing some things up. But with HTC being closer to Google source who knows. Basically this idea kinda bloomed on the jewel after I did some tinkering. The HTC camera works best with sense and I've known that forever my idea for the yesteryear devices was miui patch Rom then decompile everything see what libs bins files etc where called from the sense framework for miui patch Rom to work and go from there. But I think they're not even up to date with kit Kat with that so I've been improvising and due to an individual on Google+ who ticked me off enough to do this, cause my real passion is with sense you've got project barlan. It was either this or finish up m8 win mobile but Microsoft MO imho has been dead since 6.5

Well when we get things going more in motion I'll have to think of some fun little things to engage the users who want beta access. My whole thing with development is that anyone can do it if they apply them selves. So maybe you'll have to solve some riddles or learn some concept of a programing language Idk I pick these on the fly it's not like you have to crack an nsa database or Putin's laptop. As for Scott's men he's auto added to beta the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

ParanoidAndroid vs PureFusion for OnePlus 3T???

Hi,
After my personal research I have narrowed down 'my' preferred roms to these two roms,
ParanoidAndroid by @TheCrazyLex and team
PureFusion by @INT3NSE07 and team
Please discuss and help users to understand the better ROM for their devices and I think it will be more beneficial to understand how these roms are better than stock OOS too.
Thank you both the teams and all wonderful @devs of "all roms"

Nope, and actually none yet...
but you can share your views as said in the OP like
-camera quality(low light)
-network stability
-CAF based or ...? whats the advantages etc.. whatever you know and feel like sharing it here...
-RAMconsumption
-Charging stability
-System fluidity/stability "after long time"...
-substratum support
-call/music quality
-idle battery drain

But the most distinguishing thing for me is this rom supports fully working OOS camera. Yes, fully working which i have never come across in any other roms so far.
You can download the final nougat build from here as the developer has already started work on Oreo. I'm sure you wont be disappointed. Many people dont know about the rom because they dont have a xda thread.
You already have it narrowed down to 2 ROMs. Just flash them both, try them for yourself, and see which you like better. In the hours you waited for responses to this thread, you could have already done this, and made the decision on your own.
It's pointless asking strangers (who have different preferences and usage patterns) which is better. In the end, what you think is "best" probably has little orno bearing on what others think/prefer.

DU seems very interesting ROM...I definitely going to try when 8.0 builds starting to drop....
But where is a nice active forum to discuss about this ROM?

Hi,
After my personal research I have narrowed down 'my' preferred roms to these two roms,
ParanoidAndroid by @TheCrazyLex and team
PureFusion by @INT3NSE07 and team
Please discuss and help users to understand the better ROM for their devices and I think it will be more beneficial to understand how these roms are better than stock OOS too.
Thank you both the teams and all wonderful @devs of "all roms"

You exactly had same preference as mine..I prefer PureFusion as there is active community who listens to you and provide necessary fixes at earliest...PA is smooth too and has excellent battery life...

Yes, obvious reply but I am rather looking into technicality of these roms...
for any product if you know the process it is built with you use it wisely... ?

Yea, I have already joined that group and even enjoying it
but I think I opened this thread with other intention and "I think" people are not getting my point
my point here is this
say when you compare stock android(AOSP) vs say MIUI (heavily modified AOSP with bloatwares)
so most of people know this and will choose AOSP for good performance
NOW, PF vs PA both are AOSP/CAF based roms, so what "you guys" think(or have experienced or I missed) what are the main points which anyone of these ROMs have over each other?
As a long standing paranoid user I can just recommend this ROM again and again. Everything works, you basically never encounter a bug and you are not swamped with useless features. The battery life hasn't let me down so far and paielred with the modded gcam you can get photos comparable to stock oxygenOS (maybe even better)
#StayParanoid
I would suggest AOSPA Extended over PA
If you want that everything(i mean everything) is working and no fc:s, go Paranoid. I get almost stocklike feeling using it. Customisations are minimal. My stream provider app is not working on custom roms and that is deal breaker for me most of the times.
OT. OOS is light and good stock. You almost dont want to flash custom roms. Novadays i prefere stable beyond customisations. (too old?)
PS. I dont have any experience of AOSPA Extended

I'd disagree as AOSPA Extended isn't what PA is all about. PA is all about refinement to the last little detail. If you have PA and tell someone that this is the stock system, nobody would think otherwise (except us people who know XDA)
That's the beauty of it. You don't have many features, but the ones you have make perfect sense and are implemented so seamlessly, that you could miss it for a stock Android feature.

I would need some features which PA doesn't have like vibrate on call, de-link ring and notification volume...
