Speaker Mod(SYSTEM WIDE)for Android N? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone has successfully found a working SYSTEM WIDE speaker mod for N that improves quality and volume.
I used to love Dolby Atmos. I know there are some of these floating around but didnt know if it was working with N system wide. I prefer not to use V4a but if it's the only option I will.
Thanks all.

Hey i know if you flash this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/development/rom-weta-v1-0-t3350665 it has all the best audio sound i could find. It is built on Nougat. it does also come with V4a but just keep it turned off it you don't want to use it.

Hey thanks.
Yeah I did see that rom. I may try it in the future but for right now I'm sticking with Tupac4u's debloated stock rom. I'd like to find something I could simply flash like Dolby Atmos that used to work on prior versions of Android.
I appreciate the recommendation tho. Will probably eventually try that rom.
Thanks

I grabbed the files from here and flashed. I have both Dolby Atmos and VIper working without any issues on stock N. Enjoy.

Really?
Niiiice. Gotta try this, I sure hope this works bec iv been told before something works many times and It didnt for me. Thanks a lot tho. Fingers crossed, will Download and install those 2 exact files and report back.
Edit: @john7760
I did what you said. Flashed those 2 zip files.
Can't get Atmos to work
Thought maybe I had to delete music FX , did that, still didn't work, then thought I had to change selinux , did that, tried permissive and enforcing, no go.
Has no effect on Spotify, YouTube.
Don't know what else to try

No, was it in the op of that thread? I must of missed it. There was a lot of info, I skimmed over and missed it I guess. What do I exactly have to do? Well I'll just go to that op again.
Thanks

Just reread the op , didn't see anything where it said to do anything with Audioeffects conf in vendor/etc.
What am I suppose to do, delete it or rename it to what?

Have you also followed the select/deselect instructions when you first open V4A in the ARISE thread? Up until now, I'd had zero luck getting any sound mod to stick or work system wide on N. I still haven't tested enough to know if it's system-wide, sticks through multiple re-boots or works for speaker and bluetooth, but so far on headphones, so good. Like you, I'm on tupac4u's debloat N, as I couldn't keep a clean system after all my sound mod attempts on the stock OTA. If it helps, here's exactly what I did:
- make build.prop copy for restore purposes
- reboot to TWRP
- flash ARISE 2.11 file (also flashed the Atmos GUI add-on, but I can't stand that app)
- reboot system
- rename /vendor/etc/audio_effects.conf by appending .bak
- reboot system
- begin playing audio file, open V4A
- select/deselect/select enable and then begin adjusting settings
As I said, not sure if things will stick, but got it working better than before and the sound is considerably better than the most recent Viper4Android mod.
PS - I agree on those instructions. I think guitardedhero could use some editing help, as the copy is such a wall of text, getting the info or files you need is a real challenge.

Is this different from the past? I've found V4A speaker optimization really nice for the 6p. You don't have many settings other than making them louder and clearer, but there is still a noticeable improvement.

Thanks. I will have to try your steps . Im pretty sure I did close to that and couldn't get either to work. I actually prefer Atmos app over V4a app , but if all I can get is V4a to work, I'll take it, I just want to be able to improve the quality and volume a bit if I can, as long as V4a can do exactly what Atmos can do, I mean to be able to adjust certain eq settings. I know V4a app has that in it, just hoped it worked just like Atmos did.
I am running a custom kernel, I wouldn't think that would matter tho.
Like I said, I'll give it a try. Will check back. Thanks again for your time.

I run ElementalX and had it in place through the entire flashing process. The one thing I forgot was that I disabled MusicFX through TB after I flashed ARISE V4A. I actually find V4A set to expert UI has about as many tweaks as one could stand. Always found Atmos very clunky to use, but to each his own.
The external speaker is definitely improved, too. Finally, my system notifications are clearly using V4A, so it would appear on first blush that it's truly system wide. It will be interesting to see what happens after my next reboot, but very happy so far as I thought I'd have to stick with stock sound for the foreseeable future. Still waiting for that damned factory image.

Well that's what I liked about Atmos. It's simple compared to V4a.
Yeah the more I hear from you the more I'm worried it's just not gonna work for me for some reason, bec im pretty sure I did what you said, maybe not in that exact order. Although,
Instead of freezing Music Fx I deleted it.
Soon as I get a chance I'll try in exactly the order you said, I don't see how it can't work if we are running the same thing, unless another mod I'm using or an app I'm running could have something to do with it.
Frustrating.
Thank
you.
Edit: just noticed, the 1st guy said to flash numbers 2.1
You are saying to flash 2.11, could that be something,?
Also when you say select, deselect, select enable to mean press the check mark, uncheck, then check again?
Edit 2:
I had tried YouTube , Spotify, and notifications on my first attempt with no luck. But before I retried with your exact steps I figured lemme dl an mp3 to see, and it does work playing a random mp3 on speaker but nothing else. Is this normal?

The ARISE thread suggests an order of doing things for V4A, so take a look at that (if you can scroll through all the text). 2.11 is just the most recent zip in the repository. Good luck. I mostly use it for Play Music. Haven't tested YouTube or other media apps.

Ugh. Finding even the ARISE installation is super inconsistent as to whether it sticks and sometimes even from song to song. Think I'll dirty flash the ROM and then flash Extreme Beats as I find it helps a bit. With that and additional gain from ElementalX, it'll be livable with MusicFX. I'm going to wait until Nougat sound mod dev is a little more mature.

[UPDATED V3]Audio tweaks for Siyah kernel!

I posted this on siyah thread but i'm also posting it here because i think it'll help more people!
Update V2!I tweaked a bit more the settings for listening to speaker music and for listening on headphones!
Try them and if it doesn't work out for you the old ones will still be here to revert back...
Update V3!
As for now, speaker eq is removed in syiah kernel 1.5rc1...which means the scripts will NOT WORK ANYMORE....
The only thing possible is to enable speaker tuning in sTweaks and use poweramp or mixzing preferably and to try this eq!

Hey guys.
Just tuned my phone's audio and now it's melody to my ears!
I just wanted to share my setting with you so i can help someone!
I've attached the files below..
Run them with script manager (download from market,it's free!) and check the option run as root.
Also to make you life easier make widgets on your homescreen(s) so you can change audio profiles on the fly! ^^
You don't have to mess with sTweaks if you want to edit them, just open them with any file editor(prefferably the built in on script manager) and set your own values!
eq headphones is for...headphones...
eq normal speaker is for everyday use.
eq speaker is for listening to music!
Happy modding! :good:
If you liked my tweaks, please press thanks!
I really appreciate it...
Two more things!
1)I'm on cm9!Don't know how it will sound on other roms, try them yourself it wont kill your phone!I also don't take any responsibility for whatever happens...
2)I don't use any other eq for headphones or for speaker! This is the only thing i use!
For new guys that don't know how to do it,just a bit more detailed right here
1)Put the files on your sdcard
2)Download smanager from play store
3)Open smanager enable browse as root
4)Find the files, select the one you want and enable the run as root option and also add them to your favorites(it will be needed later!)
5)After that press run!And voila!
As for the edit part, insted of run press edit on the right..
As for the widget part just add a smanager widget and it will ask you which of your favorite widgets you want to add!
There..all finished!
You don't have to change anything in sTweaks,it's pretty straightforward.
Just run it and it'll do it's job..
It doesnt interfere with anything, you can use sTweaks normally like before..
One last thing!
Read my first post again if you dont get something and the last two bold things especially about if you have any issues(eg. distortion)
Remember, you can edit the scripts it's quite easy...

You need to tick root (su) option before running it, as stated in op.
See that small pirate android button, press it so it's green, then press run. If you want to save it to favorites (for adding homescreen widgets), tick su and fav (star) and then save, now you can add it to homescreen.
I tried these before.. and its awesome... no distortion at all... i would recommend these to anyone ...

This uses siyah's built in hardware equalizer mate in contrast with software dsp manager
and when it comes to equalizers hardware > software!
Some benefits are less cpu overhead and higher quality sound!
But you CAN use both if you like!

Yes it def paused it and shut down the music player. The reason I ask is that when I go into STweaks it still shows my speaker amplifier volume as 61 however doesn't the script change that?
Hi....i want to try this but how do i get it to my SD card? I know it's a stupid question. Do i have to copy and paste the script? When i right click the file, there is no option to send to my SD card. Do i feel dumb lol

hi there
well i need someone help, i am now on omega rom and v11.1 and i just started to hate how my music sounds while playing it over bluetooth.
I have dsp manager installed.
Also I tried all other custom roms thinking things would be different maybe due to a kernel or modem or whatever but i am disappointed,
Now with this tweak will it have any effect while playing music over bluetooth or would it be without any effect, as in STweaks there are no bluetooth settings like in DSP manager
I will try it! Better sound always it's better!!! Thanks for share with us!:thumbup:

Wow thanks for the prompt reply dude. I agree Dsp isn't perfect, but it would help compared to stock, it's really awful imo.
So, in your experience has Viper improved the external speaker experience? I'm not so fussed with the 3.5, it's the external sounds that are bugging me.
Thanks

I haven't used it for the external speaker (but it supports this, just as DSP Manager does), but I don't think you'll be disappointed if you were to try it.
FYI: I use the "Lock effect mode" to force my Bluetooth audio profile onto all audio outputs, works a charm.

Yes, you need root to complete the install. It goes something like this: install it like a normal APK, open it, it will ask for root privs, once granted, it will autoinstall the audio driver, and then all you need to do is restart. Job done!

Yeah, heres my profile I use: *lots* of bass via the Dynamic Subsystem module, EQ that brings out the highs, and the "Extreme Headphone V1" listening device.
The profile files go under your SD Card under the viper4android/profiles directory (if the folder doesn't exist, try saving a profile first to autocreate it)

Just a thought tho - the Note 3 external driver is small, doesn't it distort easily driving bassy beats?

Dude.....seriously?
Bass is driven by the amount of air the driver can push - Base is omni-directional (i.e.you feel it rather than hearing where it's coming from) so it doesn't really matter where you put your bass unit from a surround sound setup.
If you think the external speaker is going to give ANY sort of bass, you're seriously misguided, sorry!
If the frequency is too low then the unit just won't play it, that's why speakers have a frequency range.

Headphone Fix [5.0]

There is currently an issue on all lollipop ROMs pertaining to headsets that do not have microphones. When such a headphone is plugged in it either triggers a continuous loop of Google search prompts or a multitude of random screen touches. If you use headphones or any 3.5mm compliant headphone jack device, you may want to flash this till it is fixed from source.

IT WORKED!!!!!! THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH !!!!:good::laugh::highfive:
Cheers, also, why didn't you put it in themes & apps?

Sorry but how is the easiest way to flash this zip.
If I try with the defaut recovery from Cyanogen it gives me the E:No signature E:Verification failed errors.
And this recovery does not have the option to disable this check.
If I install another recovery may I loose the auto update feature from Cyanogen?
Thanks!

Well I thought it being a fix and all, that it wouldn't classify as an app or theme.

You can use ES file explorer or winrar on your desktop to extract the file inside of the zip. After which you can use es file explorer to manually copy paste the file to your system partition and then assign appropriate permissions.

I had the issue where plugging the headphones in launched the google voice search, but with this fix the icons on the homescreen get a white square behind them (guessing it's touchscreen issues). Any work around for this?
This is great, thanks!
However, anyone else now having issues with the YouTube app's play/pause buttons and seekbar not disappearing in fullscreen, or is it just me?

This should not happen, as this fixes both the Google voice issue as well as the white box issue. Are you using a headset with a mic or a standard headphone?

This is re-creatable usually through pausing a video and changing the quality (to 720p or above?) and doesn't seem to happen when not using headphones. Apologies for the lack of specifics, it's a bit finicky. Have since flashed two newer nightlies and still present.
EDIT - this can be temporarily fixable by turning the screen off and on again a few times...

Yeah it can be fixed by turning off the screen but it seems to just show up again when you go to watch another video, anyway I am testing a fix and so far it seems to be OK, I will upload it if everything is good

So, anyone tried this or know if it's even necessary in CM12.1?
I must admit I've flashed this fix on the last few nightlies without checking first if the bug is still present as I've seen nothing about it in the CM changelog.
For anyone who cares, this is still necessary with CM12.1...

No, it's not. I used CM12.1 (RR 5.4.5) and a pair of headphones without a microphone and never had this issue.

It doesn't affect ALL headphones, it never has. Still affects my non-microphone Shures that work on stock, after a full wipe and fresh install of CM12.1.
I'm still unsure if this is necessary, I have still not flashed a stock lollipop ftf and have the need to use this on newer cm based firmware's. I shall flash Lollipop and verify whether it is necessary.

Sound mods? Anyone using one, or more?

For those that are rooted, are you using something other than Dolby Atmos for your EQ? The more I use Dolby Atmos, the more I dislike it. It sounds good, but I have issues with it:
1) It seems to enable and disable at random
2) It'll switch profiles between songs - If I like my custom profile better, it will switch back to music on the next song. Not all the time, but most of the time
3) I'll have a preset *almost* the way I want it, but when I go back to adjust just one slider, like 20 seconds later, the EQ completely re-adjusts and I have to basically start over
4) (probably the biggest reason) It isn't comparable with my favorite music player, n7. Dolby crashes and cannot be started again, even if you uninstall n7. Only fix is a factory reset.
I seen the thread about v4a, but it makes Dolby Atmos crash. If I were to freeze Dolby, or uninstall it using Tibu, or ROM Toolbox, can I install v4a or a different sound mod and have it work?
I see no point in installing a sound mod when we have a Hi-Fi chip + Dolby Atmos

Hello
I tried to use poweramp, but this isn´t dolby Atmos enabled, but, I ´m using Jetaudio plus... and this works PERFECT, remember that this sound app was designed for use in high -end mp3 players ( like cowon), and i can say with full confidence that works great with dolby atmos, boosting very well the music in the speakersphone, in the bluetooth car stereo and headphones ( wired and wireless)... this app bringing bass optimization ( in the original speakersphone the bass is very poor), let me know your experience, i´ll try to help

My understanding is that the HIFI chip doesn't work with apps that don't support it. Is that wrong? I never notice it and Atmos doing much for Google Play Music

Yep, I used Poweramp for while like this.....But, as bad as my reasoning sounds, I don't like the UI of Poweramp any more - Very Gingerbread-ish. It was fine for the last 3+ years, but I guess I'm just tired of it. I'm, anxiously, awaiting the new release of Poweramp (I'm a beta user) that has the redesigned interface.
In the meantime, I've found a few other players that work well that "look prettier".
- Shuttle+ has been my #1 "backup" player for the past 4 or 5 years. It's simple, but has most of the features I need
- RocketPlayer - I found on Amazons app store for $3.99 (vs Google Play for $6.99) and I really like it too!
But, the reason I started this thread is because I dislike Dolby Atmos. It constantly resets, turns off, changes profiles and was incompatible with my favorite player (n7 Player) - Actually, it's more like n7 is incompatible with Dolby Atmos and disables it system wide when installed. Prior to B27, it crashed Dolby Atmos and the only way to get it back was a factory reset.
So, in order to avoid Dolby Atmos and use players I liked and still have system wide audio enhancements, I was looking for a good system-wide sound mod. I know Viper4Android is the #1 go to for that, but I had a few issues with it not turning on and having to re-start my phone. But, in all honesty, I flashed a mod package that had V4A included, not as a stand-alone. So I may try it by itself, without the rest of the mod?

I'm on One Plus 3T Oreo 8.0 rooted, years using V4A and n7 player. Dolby Atmos alone seems to me a better solution. V4A is absolute freedom (a mess) and didn't find a player better than n7. Are you on Oreo version? You already have all we are looking for!

Well, I actually no longer have the A7.....The Samsung S8 lured me away with the big "edge-to-edge" screen. But honestly, I wish I still had the A7 sometimes.
But, the S8 is achieving the main results I was looking for...... I was flashing different ROMs on the A7, almost daily, sometimes 2-4 times daily - Plus all the different mods out there for rooted phones. I was literally addicted and would do this for 4-5 hours nightly. I had to step away from it all and get a phone that was not easily rooted...... My choice was an iPhone or a Samsung. Since I HATE iPhones, I went with the lesser of the 2 evils.
Ok, off my soap-box.... I do miss the amazing sound of the A7!
I find Dolby Atmos unreliable too, but really only use it when playing a video. For music I just use Jet Audio HD plus. Sounds great. Actually un-modded mine and my Son's Huawei Mate 7 and installed Jet instead of having a permissive system and Viper.
This is probably the best phone I've had in regards to being on a stock ROM. I would look at root and debloat if no updates were coming though. Easy to un-root it once de-bloated.

You can have enforcing + viper if you use the magisk module though
That's good to know!
I haven't used Magisk yet but for my phone, even if I mod it, it needs to be un-rooted again for root checking apps. Kind of limits mods. I assume Magisk is like Xposed, needing root? I know nothing about it yet.

No, Magisk doesn't need root, it provides root for a ROM. It's an alternative to SuperSU.
Magisk has the ability to hide root from some apps if needed. Items like banking apps and whatnot may still work and SafetyNet passes in most cases.
From what I've read. Never needed to do any of that myself.

Lol... The whole point about Magisk is being able to modify the system without triggering safetynet. Basically you don't have to unroot or anything, it's like you have your phone stock but you can have a bunch of modifications installed...
It was an alternative to SuperSU. But right now I can say with all certainty that SuperSU is an alternative to Magisk. It makes very little sense to use SuperSU especially since those Chinese guys bought it and made a mess with v2.80

Hi I installed the LO 14 everything work great even the speakers! However I can't use the headphones. It's not possible to make them work! No sound via headphones...

Serious Simple Audio Improvement (?)

Ok I'm an audiophile musician, as many of you I think
and, though stock audio just works I'm trying to look at audio mods here
I looked in many threads and I can see that ARISE is very well known, supported and loved, but looks like is very customizeable and confusing....
dolby atmos in apps section doesn't work well, it lowers volume and...well, I can't feel any improvement
viper4android should be nice, but I never tried it
now...what are you using? things that work nice and stable, with quality enhancements....don't need thousands of profiles or eq since I'm a big fan of flat sound (the way is meant to be listened)
Thank you for your attention, once we'll have some satisfactory answer I'll make a poll and a general AIO audiophile thread with all working options as referral.
EDIT: ARISE audio system simple guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/r-s-e-sound-systems-auditory-research-t3379709
go to this thread, don't be scared, just search for lastest deuteronomy zip and flash it
you will find a nice app called viper4arise that will let you manage settings separately for every audio output with simple and nice UI
you can also import presets and plugins, but it's secondary.
Im going to tune in on this. Would like to install ARISE on my nexus (comes with Viper4Android) but there are so many versions to choose from, it gets a bit confusing.
Any tips on which ARISE works for our phone on 7.1.1 ?
ARISE is the right answer. It's customizable for true audiophiles but simply flashing it seriously improves audio quality without you having to tweak anything. Seriously. I know there are several zips for ARISE. Just make sure you get the most current stable release (Deuteronomy 2.3.3) and I usually go for the smallest zip file because I don't need all of the extra stuff like Dolby Atmos and whatnot. It comes with a modified version of the Viper4Android app that allows you to tweak settings to your liking. The app, by default, is setup for novices or people that don't need to get too specific with any settings so you can boost bass, enable clarity options, spectrum extension, etc. by toggling the switch next to it. Simple as that.

I never did any of that. I just flashed, booted up, went into the ARISE V4A app and toggled the options I wanted. There was an immediate difference in audio quality. You can toggle the options while playing music and hear the difference.

Really depends on what you're playing the music on. I usually enabled Spectrum Extension (0.4 strength) as a lot of my music is 320kbps MP3 and Bass Boost (default settings) for Bluetooth and Headset (3.5mm jack) while enabling "Speaker Optimization" for the speaker. I mainly use the bluetooth audio in my car and while my car stereo isn't that great but I did throw some Kickers in the front doors. Spectrum Extension is awesome, but make sure to disable it if you're listening to any FLAC files.

I really only listen to music through headphones/AUX in the car so I edited some of those to the audiophiles info in the post. I turned on the spectrum extension and will see how I like it since it's all streamed from spotify (no flac).

Because it interferes with ARISE / V4A. If you're completely stock with no audio mods there's no point to disabling it.
