Reducing game lag - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I did have a note 7, but returned it because this phone is still serving me well. Not to mention the tinting on the note 7 drove me nuts.
Needless to say thia phone lags some or stops when playing games like final fantasy record keeper, yet it didn't lag on the note 7 with the 820 snapdragon. Is there any suggestions on what I should do? I'm stock rooted deodexed on marshmallow.
Is there any kernel or tweaks that people can suggest?

Reduce your resolution to 1080p, use frankenclark, and download an app called gltools, gives you some graphics settings like a pc would

Most games are stuttering - Jelly Bean bug?

I have Galaxy Note (ICS) and I played some 3D heavy graphics games with this phone with zero or minimal stuttering. However, when I play most of the same game in my N7, they stutter heavily.
Games I tried:
- Gears & Guts (worst stutter)
- Dead Trigger (bad stutter)
- The Dark Knight Rises (worst stutter)
- Shadow Gun (minimal stutter)
I have NOT installed any background systems apps that takes a lot of resources to create this stuttering.
I am wondering if anyone experiences the same problem or if this just my tablet. I already did a hard reset twice and same problem persists.
Dead Trigger is the only one of those i have played and it seems to run ok but I have read A lot of comments from people in the play store saying the N7 is lagging or stuttering
Just out of interest, are you using any of the home screen rotation apps (rotation locker, ultimate rotation control etc)?
Lots of rumors that Apple are behind a HUGE campaign to try and discredit the Nexus7 in whatever way they can, which I guess means forum posts here, Play store comments claiming about lag and stuff.
I havn't seen any of this, and my Nexus7 is perfect. I think people need to make up thier own mind, rather than being influenced by Apple viral marketing campaigns.
I'm not getting any stuttering in games on mine, I played Asphalt 7 and Dead Trigger today and both played smooth and fast.

Same here. Games play flawless. Now if you have an older version of the app called rotation control, its a known fact THST app caused games to stutter. They just recently updated their app to fix this. Even says in their changelog that it was causing gaming/videonstuttering on nexus 7. With the new update for that app, they fixed it.
I have the Dark Knight Rises on mine and it plays with very minimal lag (stutter), not sure why others say its terrible as it just really hasn't been for me at all.
I had this. Rebooted it and it's not happened since

I have The Dark Knight Rises. I dont see the lag. Works fine.
from my experience, lag and stutter is purely opinionated.
i come from a PC gaming background, and i cant stand anything less than 60fps, which is why my beast is watercooled.
some games on the nexus 7 dont stay above 60fps all the time, but they run consistently more smoothly compared to on my galaxy note with factory ICS (not rooted).
however, one thing you might not be used to is the difference in screens. amoled has a very low response time (less than 1ms black to black in some applications), but IPS panels have a longer response time (6.5ms grey to grey and around 16ms black to black). to people who are sensitive to it, this can make it look like its lagging a little or ghosting. it improves a bit once the device is warm, but not by much. run a benchmark and see if the fps is similar to your note, if it is, then its mainly the difference in response time that you are perceiving as stutter.

The same here with Dark Knight Rises.
Don't play a lot of games but what I have loaded plays perfectly fine on the N7. I also have a Galaxy Note, I have the game Sleepy Jack which consistently slows down to almost a halt when a lot is happening on the screen. On my N7 it just doesn't happen at all, plays beautifully smooth. I loaded Dead Trigger after reading this post even though its not my preferred type of game & don't see any lag. Riptide GP is glorious but gets a bit boring.
In fact gaming on the N7 is a pleasure compared to the GNote (laggy, colour banding, black crush issue in dark scenes).
I'm running hotw1r3s cm10 on my note, I loaded up the games you posted on my nexus and my note, and got zero lag on either.my nexus is rooted stock

I have been playing Dead Trigger since I got my N7 on the highest settings available with no lag what so ever. I do a lot of gaming and can tell if there is "Stuttering" and let me tell you, this tablet doesn't stutter.
Well something is very strange then - if people are saying there is no frame rate issues with some of those games..
From personal experience -
Asphalt 7 drops frames all over the shop - compared to it running on a phone [it's only really smooth in the replay after the race]
Batman - does stutter if you pan the camera while moving - or in combat - or moving at speed - and the over all frame rate is low
On iphone Asphalt is very smooth - the iPad version is like butter..
I have not purchased Batman on the iPad - however reports are it's also very smooth..
I think it's a combination of things - I can see that some people may not notice - if coming from other tablets or lower spec phones.
But those two games are deff not optimised for either jelly bean or the nexus 7..
Dead Trigger - plays great - so I know it's not my tablet..

That's weird, because I just played a long session of Asphalt 7 last night on my Nexus 7 and it played as smooth as butter, the same goes for The Dark Knight Rises. I wonder if there is a program on your Nexus 7 that is causing those issues.

Well if there is - it's one of the stock ones
I only have paper land pro installed - and I bought that after the games - and noticed the low frame rate before it.
it's very odd if theres a app causing it - that Asphalt 7 looks great on the replay..
Asphalt 7 also has bad texture loading - you get weird textures that flicker as the texture loads in.. [which others have reported]
dead trigger plays great - MC3 - fine - Dark Meadows - fine
Maybe it's something silly - like 8GB tablets have faster storage memory than the 16GB [to save cost on the 16GB]
But then you have a 16?
Noticed yours is rooted though - might have something to do with it also - mines stock
it's not a really low frame rate - but compared to it running on other devices - SG3 / iPad for example - it's really noticeable.

I have a 16 GB version too. Have you tried doing a factory reset? If that doesn't work, you might check into getting Google to send you another one out, it could just be defective.

I did a reset - I did that since I was sending it back due to screen lift [which I then fixed] - reset didn't help.
Also redownloaded in case it was a 'bad' install - still same.
Noticed yours is rooted though - so maybe something to do with it?
All other games run perfectly - so cant see it being a hardware issue - MC3 / Dead Trigger / Dark Meadows and even the Tegra 3 demo 'Glowball' all ruin great
There's an ongoing thread about Asphalt 7 on both here and the gameloft forum - some have found altering the XML device file in the game - making it think it's running on a phone - think it's a SG3 - makes it look a lot better - less bright tracks, better overall 'look' the Nexus version can look really bad when compared to the phone version..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1797247
frame rate is still poor though.
The game just does not run well /look good on the Tegra 3 tablets when compared to other Android devices.
And compared to the iPhone / iPad versions - this looks like it's really struggling at some points.
Guys, notice something? The games you are saying look and run great are Tegra 3 optimized. The others are Gameloft games. It is Gameloft's issue for not optimizing their ports, I mean, games.
Will either have to petition them to optimize the games or don't play them. There's another thread about someone digging into the code in Asphalt 7 and seeing it was optimized for the S3 and not N7. They used a hacked APK and used the same settings for S3 and it became noticeably better.

[Q] Slow 3D Performance - Stock KitKat and no root

So, I've been struggling with this issue from day one ... Before I decided to buy me a friggin Note 3 I watched several reviews and youtube vids to see, among other things, how well this beast could run recent 3D games and all the people were stating that all the games they tested (dead trigger 2, dead Trigger, Dungeon hunter 4, Riptide ....) were running super smooth at 60fps ... now maybe my vision is somehow defect but when I run games such as dead trigger 2 I get very choppy framerates... like not anywhere near 60fps for most of the time ...
I thought upgrading to KikKat would do the trick - but nope, no difference ... I thinks its even worse now... also after going back to factory defaults several times did not do any good either .... So Im asking:
- Am i the only one who seems to have trouble running games in 60fps?
- if there are others who have experienced this, was there any difference when you switched to root?
- is there any fix for non-root users to get some performance boost...
Normally I would say that gaming performance on a phone is not a big deal - but since everyone seems to get super performance except me I am somewhat curious what the problem is here ... also the Note 3 isnt the cheapest smartphone on the market, so it better perform as fast as possible
Heres some Details:
Model: SM-N9005
Build: KOT49H.N9005XXUENB4

Huge problem with performance - lag all the time (SM-N910C)

Hi. I have noticed that my Note 4 has huge problem with performance. I cannot play games without lag. Almost every game gives me 18-24fps. It's really horrible, because I had Note 3, and there were no such problems.
I tried to wipe cache, factory reset, and this didn't help.
In 3D Mark and GFXBench I have horrible results. In 3D Mark sometimes I see 30fps (benchmark in 720p), and overall result is about 12000.
Via GameBench i checked couple of games, and there are results (median fps):
- Anomaly 2 game, and there I have about 10fps all the time! Maybe anybody can check this game on Note 4?
- Asphalt 8, 22fps
- Dead Effect 2, 18fps (on "extreme" settings)
- Andry Birds 2, 28fps
- Dead Trigger 2, 25fps (on "high" settings)
I have stock Lollipop 5.1.1, without root.
Does anybody had similar situation? Now I miss my Note 3, which worked like a charm!
Edit:
Today I have done factory reset once more. Now situation is even worse.
Now Asphalt 8 has about 11fps, when on Gamebench site it has about 51fps!
was it always like this? I'm new to the note 4 so can't help you out that much but u may benefit from flashing back to 4.4.4. I had a similar issue like urs (15-16 k on 3dmark and a heat issue, which i resolved. Updated to 5.1.1 and it's not both gone).
Earlier it worked much better. I think, that I can't go back to KitKat, because of Android 5.1.1.
This phone works like a galaxy s2 for me. Lag everywhere. This phone was in repair once (warranty), they put new mainboard and display. Nothing changed, I can say that now is even worse.

Your phone went into warranty/repair for what?
& what about the overall benchmark ?
My phone went for warranty because of burn-in screen (white color was like yellow, and notification bar was bit less colored than the other screen area), and was getting hot during phone calls. That's why I have new display, and mainboard.
In benchmarks I have:
3D Mark - around 12000.
Antutu - well, it depends of the time of a day (really!). Sometimes is around 38000, sometimes it is 43000, and sometimes it is even 51000.
But aparts from benchmarks, daily usage is horrible. I have lag in menu (sometimes works good), in Play Store, in home screen... Now even 2D games lag: Clash of Clans, and Rayman Fiesta Run lag like hell. Rayman looks like game turned in slow motion mode.
I switched to 1080x1920, and 480DPI (without root, thanks to ADB), and situation is the same.
My old Note 3 was much, much faster!
try game tuner from google play....fixed the lag for me and the quality of graphics

Okay. .so now its better with app.
But I dont know why the phone performs like this.
Have u tried to install any other debloated ROM ?
I think that maybe @white7561 is right, and there is a problem with hardware.
I never tried any other ROM, because I don't want to tick KNOX flag

Anyone else getting major lag in games? (Hearthstone)

I just tried playing Hearthstone with my S7 Edge and the lag is horrible. The game is almost unplayable. Not to mention, the game runs in some ultra high saturation settings. This game ran faster on my S5 and a lot faster on my 6S+.
Is anyone experiencing lag in any other games?

i'm having the same issue with pinball arcade, like if there' some type of game lag. it's unfortunate because its the only game app i play lol. now it's useless unless i enjoy lag pinball. very weird, hopefully samsung can fix this or the app creators.
Runs very Smooth with my s7 edge. But i have the exynos chip, maybe you have the snapdragon...

Runs really choppy SS well. I have an iPhone 6s plus and it's not even close. I figured new Samsung could hang
Runs smooth on my s7 exynos version. Does the lag appear immediately or after a while as when I do play on my phone it's usually for no more than 30 min at a time.

Galaxy S7 Edge, Exynos Polish retail presales. I got lags on everything. Touchwiz, chrome, facebook, games, videos (however only in software-decoded). If a video player is using hardware acceleration, then it's fine. html5 embedded videos run (with individual pixels flashing with different colors), but fail when I try to change the viewing mode to horizontal, try to run fullscreen or skip few seconds of the video. I see same flashing pixels when browsing instagram pictures. The most irritating is VR mode. Flashing pixels all the time, a 10-20 second freeze every other minute in any app, however, when running 360 videos, most of them run smoothly without a lag. I ran Antutu benchmarks, but the score was ~101K. Is that the general lag some people are experiencing and hope Samsung will release patches, or should I get my phone serviced? Is there a way to run maintenance tests to check what's wrong with it?
Just to be clear, I have the SS version and the phone did not lag anywhere else. It was only in games. I fixed it though.
Those who are getting unplayable lag while in games you can download "Package Remover Pro" and remove "Game Services" and "Gamepad Services".
Now my games finally don't lag and they look much better.

Let me give that a try. I will post results
I have a Snapdragon 820 S7E, and Hearthstone worked perfectly for me for an hour yesterday. No issues so far.
I don't have any lag issues but disabling the 2 gaming packages fixed the over saturation, thanks! (On a Exynos model btw)
I'm getting lag even in Monument Valley on my S7 Edge Exynos version and no lag at all on my Huawei Mate 8.. I'll try disabling those two game packages.
Hmm this seems to trigger Knox? If so I don't want to do it.
Still having gaming lag issues even with package Disabler. Need advice otherwise I'm going back to my 6S plus
Yea, I am also still getting lag in Hearthstone. I can't believe Samsung would release such a half baked phone. The most powerful mobile GPU around and they manage to screw it up.
I don't get lag on my SD 820 Edge when playing Hearthstone... I do however get force closes. I have to then rush to get back logged in before I lose my "turn". Anyway, it's been pretty disappointing.
I get lag angry birds 2 and tekken nothing os playable. That relates to something sammy changed in android 6. As note 5 have same issue on android 6 but not on 5.1.1.
I am playing Hearthstone on my Exynos S7 Edge for a few weeks now.The game runs pretty smooth while dropping frames time to time but when I activate Power Saving mode it doesn't feel like it is 30 fps.
I play on computer all the time at 30 fps and it is great.
When I use the Game Tuner just to lower the resolution and texture quality,FPS also drops for some reason.
Hmmm. mine does drop frames every now and then but hearthstone doesn't have major lags. I'm on exynos.
I only play for 1 or two battles in a row. maybe that's the reason? I haven't played a lot. only a little

Bad gaming performance compared to N5

Hey just wanted to know if anyone was experiencing lag in games. I turned off all game options in package disabler pro and it fixed the brightness issue but still having FPS issues. I play Order and Chaos 2 and on my Note 5 it performs beautiful, on this phone it's laggy and choppy. I can't figure out if it's a graphic issue, optimization issue, or a network issue with this phone. Please any input is greately appreciated!
Probably a Gameloft issue. I always loved Order and Chaos but their device support is crazy. The SD 820 should be a best. But even on the LG G4 with the 808 last gen, tons of games had issues playing. I know Mortal Kombat was one that was so unplayable until several updates later. On the G4 there was a Game Optimizer or something in battery settings if I remember.
Also check Samsungs new Gameplay mode or whatever it's called. It's an overlay that could be causing slowdowns.
I'm totally getting the same vibe from the gaming performance of this phone. A good example is the recently released Miitomo game. On my Nexus 6P and my boyfriends Droid Turbo, the game runs smoothly. However, on my S7 Edge it stutters and lags in a way that resembles missing animations or frames. It's pretty noticeable and it does not go away no matter what I do. I uploaded a video of this on YouTube and plan on showing a couple more games and apps that similar performance dips when it comes to graphics...
Smacky cars is the same way.
TBH it looks like a frame rate limiter.
It appears to be pumping like a PC game with a 60Hz refresh display and a GPU that can render 300+ FPS and is locked at 60Hz. It will jump like that. The hardware is probably too fast in all actuality. If it could be run without such a limit it would probably scream like a girl running from a gorilla.
