It didn't need an announcement probably, but Sony has confirmed its plans to release (no date given though) Android 7.0 update for Xperia Z5, among other devices.

Oh God, I don't think I'm ready to get on the hype-train just yet. Just like it's too early to get excited about Christmas
wouldn't expect to see it till at least April next year going by previous updates by Sony
No z3? Thats interesting.. Then why did they release the previews on it?.. It's f***ing stupid. Just like last year with the z,z1 series -.-
Honestly? I'd like to receive early updates following the Google patch cycle. Constantly.
I saw somewhere (forget where it was) that considering how fast (or slow) Sony update their devices, roll-out will probably start by February 2017. It also says Samsung will do by January-February of the same year.
Sad. I want it now. Lol

This is one of the main reasons I'm planning on ditching Sony when I get my next phone, this and increasingly poor build quality.
expect 7.0 upodate for Sony around late november. Since this yearly android update is released earlier and OEMs had acces to the code much sooner thus we'll get the update sooner. You guys are way too pessimistic about this
we're pessimistic because we know what Sony are like with updates and doubt there going to change now
Guess what guys, they get ready for it...

Considering the number of devices to get this update is really small, I assume we should get is very soon and definitely BEFORE the christmas.
Otherwise it will be another shame for Sony...

Hang on a sec...we're not pessimistic - we're not delusional either. It's almost September now. What's the latest Z5 security patch level? Oh yeah, 1st April. So "wee little" security patches are 5 months behind but you guys reckon the entire Operating System, Android Nougat will drop within the next 4 months?!?

Admittedly, Sony update is not keeping up with Security patches from Google, unless they include it in a bigger bugfix/major upgrade release. So I wouldn't take that as a reference.
We were all disappointed for the late MM release by Sony, but I don't think N will bring so many dramatic changes from M, as M brought from L.
Also, I don't think they have a flagship series replacement on their agenda until February, a it happened during MM preparation.
Let's just stay optimistic.

After the time it took for Marshmallow I hope Sony can get it out by Christmas, there is no excuse anymore to not release an update when Google release previews themselves. This isn't ICS which was more or less a complete overhaul of Android.
This is a minor update in comparison to ICS, Marshmallow was minor but took half a year for Sony to roll out. Hope Sony can get 7.0 out by November, I expect perhaps one more update after that before support is ended, but by then I will probably get a new phone.

LLabtoofer said HTC M8 and other Snapdragon 800/801 devices won't get 7.0 as Qualcomm will no longer support their drivers. I think it is likely Sony will bring features from the previews to the Z3, but it won't be the true 7.0, just the developer build - the same goes for other devices like the Nexus 5 and OnePlus One.

We're here live at Google I/O, and the folks from Mountain View have just shared something rather sweet -- a coalition of manufacturers and carriers committed to making sure their Android devices receive the very latest updates. All four major US carriers (and Vodafone) as well as HTC, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, LG and Motorola are on board, and all will guarantee you timely upgrades to the latest version of Android for eighteen months after release, provided the hardware's capable. Now that's change we can believe in.

I believe it's too little too late for our beloved X10's
could be a little too late but seeing how quickly manufacturers tend to do upgrades and considering the fact that the 1 and a half year old X10 IS getting Gingerbread... doesn't seem that bad, could be worse (aka Motodesk...) and, either the costumers feedback or the really awesome work devs do over here, it's nice seeing Sony Ericsson coming to an agreement of having the latest Android version on the devices
Haha. That is awesome. 18 months. Right about the time your 2 year contract is up in most places where there is carrier subsidy. Gives you about 6 months to think about what your next phone will be...otherwise you'll be stuck on an "old" OS version after that.
Still, it is pretty cool that they have an update policy in place now. All things considered, 18 months is actually decent; there could be lots of hardware improvements in addition to the OS improvements in that time, unless phone technology plateaus like computers did a while back before picking up again. But it would be hilarious if the phone companies released an update the day after the 18 months are up...
i belive these will go hand in hand with the new arc play neo and newer xperia minis!
x10 wont recieve any futher updates above 2.3.3
its to late to our x10 , we must trust in our xda dev
Note that this is a policy for this year's phones and beyond, and does not apply to our X10s. Though the fact that we are getting the GB update is awesome.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
18 months is hardly decent in the mobile business... especially in regards to Android.
18 months ago brings us back to the launch of Android Eclair. With this policy, SE would have been totally fine letting us run Android 1.6 until April 26 2011.

What??
Did you read it? It is saying 18 months of getting updates as they roll out from google, meaning we would already be on gingerbread.....
18 months of guaranteed timely updates is awesome, and unparalleled so far in the world of mobile smartphones
Maybe I am confused, but I believe Gingerbread was released in December 2010. 18 months from that takes us to June 2012.
If I'm wrong please let me know.
What a huge joke. 18 months IF the hardware is capable? So what? 1 update and for some stupid reason the hardware cannot handle the next update.
Nothing will change except for later updates because now they have to provide an update within 18 months not even close to the stock release date like some manufacturers do already.

You are not understanding what this means....
It isn't saying 18 months between updates, it is saying up until 18 months after the phone is put out you will get every update as it is released, so no waiting around for companies to release their own "custom" versions and getting left behind. Meaning we would have gotten gingerbread immediately.
Just read it over a couple times and saw where I mis-read what it said. I was assuming 18 months after release of the OS not 18 months of the release for the device.
Cheers

well they can't release tablet software on a smartphone that isn't the same resolution, etc.....
I think that is more so what they mean.
Also, some phones released have been released with very outdated specs (i.e.- all of SE's new lineup) so if they release a dual core specific version of android, that would be sony's fault, not googles.
This sounds like a positive move to me.
To bad they couldn't implement this sooner... they could have avoided att eol-ing this device with not one update.

Android 4.4.4 Update for Sony Xperia Z
Sony has recently started rolling out Android 4.4.4 update for three of its smartphones; Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact and Xperia Z Ultra.
Though Android 4.4.4 is not a major update and is only minor one with few bug fixes but still Sony fans from all over the world are anxiously waiting for this update.

Especially the users of Sony Xperia Z are curious to know if Sony will roll out Android 4.4.4 update for Sony Xperia Z or not.
Wel, for all the Xperia Z users we have a great news. Sony has planned to roll out Android 4.4.4 update for Sony Xperia Z as well. However, the exact date is not known as of yet.
According to the inside sources, Sony believes that its last year flagship should get the latest Android 4.4.4 as it fixes few major bugs.
This new update will most probably be available to download by the mid of August. Android 4.4.4 update for Sony Xperia Z will not only improve the overall performance of the device but will also ensure that the battery drain issue is resolved.
With the roll out of Android 4.4.4 update for Sony Xperia Z we might witness an end to future updates for the last year flagship.
However, it’s still too early to say.

4.4.2 was an odd job, full of mistakes, lags and battery drains. So I expect further updates if Sony wants to make happy it's customers. We spent a lot of money in a flagship which is not even 2 years old.
Anyway, we have great developers here in XDA and outside, I hope they stay long time with this device because it is fantastic and has nothing to envy for newer phones. Indeed I'm using CM11 by thomas and except the camera, all is working better than stock.

Sorry to say that 2 years is a long time, even for flagships like the XZ. All manufacturers rely on selling phones to get an income. Aftermarket support have been somewhat an bonus from the most popular devices as that don't render any money.
Looking to Samsung 2 years ago you have the SIII and the last update it will get is the last 4.3 (if you don't have the LTE version but that is another stry ).
I just keep my fingers crossed and hope for update but wouldn't be suprised if it's not released.

There arent much mistakes by Sony if u ask me.. To be fair, the actual 4.4.2 from Google itself was too buggy.. All bugs on XZ is from the actual OS.. Except for tiny glitches(Lags as u say) has been due to the patches Sony apply on the fw.. But to be fair, XZ 230 fw has been way better than Z2's 402 fw.. I have seen lot of users in Z2 saying 402 fw crashes a lot, very buggy.. And FYI, there are battery drains due to Google Play Services problem, which is Google's fault.. Not Sony's.. With the workarounds, i see a big improvement in battery life from 4.3.. If u want proof, u can check in battery stats thread last page..

Oviously manufacturers are looking for an income. But 600€ phone deserves at least 2 years software support or more, and there is not that period from the launch of the device to the launch of android 4.4.4.
And it's not very difficult for a company to make an update, even some developers here have made more contributions than sony... The money will render when we need to update our device because it is broken (not very difficult in our case if it drops lol) or because there have been big improvements in the phones, not because they don't update the software or they had made a buggy version. A happy customer is very significant for future sales. Otherwise he will buy in another company.
And refering to SIII, we all know samsung update policies: not enough RAM, bla bla bla...
Never more policarbonate and lagwiz.

These update schedules from Vodafone AU are usually pretty accurate and the source is reliable so it seems like good news but doesn't list 4.4.2 or 4.4.4 so there's no real way to be sure which version it is. Gave thanks to the post though!

Hopefully someone can port one of the newer roms to the m9 in the time being.
Nice to see the update coming in time (90d time frame after vanilla Android release). But one thing makes me muse: Why were the previous updates released on most carrier versions simultanously? And will this happen with this update again?
I've been with HTC for a long time and except for the M7, I only owned unlocked devices. I noticed that the unlocked versions recieved their updates in time while it took the carriers weeks if not months to release their adopted updates. It annoyed me as hell while the M7 was my daily driver, so I returned to unlocked versions with my current M9.
Now I see that the updates are released on most carrier versions simultanously. This would mean that either the carriers have vanilla ROMs (unlikely) or HTC is holding back the unlocked versions in favor of the carrier versions not being delayed. The latter would really be annoying.
Any thoughts on this?

So all my HTCs (6 so far) although I take them in great price (after a little blackmail that I will opt for another provider) from my provider are totally unlocked.
android M with no material design in sight
im getting tired of sense the way it is currently
Those in the US shouldn't get their hopes too high. With carrier approvals being what they are we won't see this before February 2016. Some ROMs will have it sooner but often times things like WiFi calling and VoLTE won't work until the carrier version comes out...

I read it to mean that the rollout of firmware for the different M9 variants will start at the end of 2015. i.e. "At the end of 2015, HTC will start to roll out Marshmallow upgrades for the M9 phones." The more the carriers get involved so they can install their branded crapware (Verizon, can you hear me now?), the longer it will take, so I'd expect the unlocked/developer ones to come first.
(FYI, Jan 1 2015 was the "beginning of the end" of 2015 )
Im just hoping the m9 6.0 update improves battery life and overheating. Getting close to returning mine within my 14 days. The biggest feature i look forward to is the merging of the micro sd card as internal storage.
If that one a9 had a larger battery id be all over it.
I don't think merging of micro sd card as internal will be supported officially, micro sd cards are not as fast as internal... I used my sd card for large apps though... =)

Will the sense became like the sense on the a9? I find it too much "google"

Looks like a new update (32.0.A.6.200) is coming for the whole Z5 series. Check PCC/OTA/XperiaFirm and tell use more about it! (Currently no changelog is available)

Looking forward to seeing what changed.

any notable change?
Installed on my unlocked Z5. So far nothing new, and the phone doesn't seem to run or feel any faster. Security fixes maybe? New modem drivers? New kernel revision?
I doubt Sony would waste resources and time anyway to add features and stuff in the Lollipop ROM when the Marshmallow ROM is around the corner and should arrive by the end of December

where did you get that info? I am genuinely curious, because I haven't heart anything about Marshmallow this year.

"So Xperia Z5 users may receive this big android update in November or December."

"The update release date is yet to confirm, but we can expect the update in mid-December."

etc.
Anyway, the sooner the better
Finally something to talk about that doesn't include Z5 heat emission.

Well, the first source is 100% unreliable, as their top post states that Z1 will receive Marshmallow, though Sony has officially dropped support, whilst the second source just states some rumours.
The only indication I have seen that we might be getting Marshmallow this year is Telstra's update roadmap, where they said that Z4 Tablet will be on Marshmallow in January, and since it's a carrier branded device, unlocked Z4 Tablets would probably receive Marshmallow earlier.

There's also new AOSP binaries as of today, so that's cool.

Do you mean AOSP binaries of Android 6.0?
Hmm, just noticed that this is mostly only available for Orange (or formerly Orange) carrier devices. And still no changelog?
factory unlocked no update...
The updates so far. A bunch yesterday, only a couple more added today.
Bunch of Vodafones added since yesterday.

did they end up pushing marshmallow or is it still June? Not sure if I should get this phone, or a LG G Stylo or Escape

Marshmallow will start rolling out around the end of May/beginning of June.
But it's your choice. If you are considering the 5.5" variant, then it's the best out of the three.
Same if you are considering the 4.7" variant. It is still better than the G Stylo and Escape.

Idols are pretty solid phones for the price, it's gonna be kinda hard to beat them. Don't let the android version stop you, marshmallow or not they are great.
I personally have had really bad experiences with cheap lg phones, you'd be lucky if you get what you pay for.
If you do go for an lg other then a g3/4 I'd really suggest looking up multiple reviews first.

I've been getting this on my 6045I ever since I got it 2 weeks ago. Is Android M marshmallow? And does anyone recamend updating to "5.0.2-010 01" if I want root? Is it buggy?

I have the LG Stylo from T-Mobile, and the idol international version on cricket, but using AT&T Apn with great success. In my opinion, the Stylo is a much more solid device, with removable battery, incredible memory management, and already has marshmallow. The idol can't be beat for music though, and hopefully marshmallow will fix high all the time memory usage. Just don't get the cricket version of either of these, as the hardware and software are lesser. I happily use both, and have Google voice for handling the number integration. Have the idol on cricket's inexpensive plan, and it comes in handy when I travel to have AT&T service [emoji51]

I have had this phone through Cricket since Nov. 2015, and i loved it until the patch came through. I have now had to have it replaced twice because it will turn off on its own, when i try and use Google play music it locks the phone screen immediately. I think all of the bugs are A) due to Crickets bloat wear or B) due to the bugginess of 5.0.2. Has anyone else experience any flaws and glitches? I LOVED this phone up until this point and now i want to throw it at a wall, or move back to the ZTE Max Plus (2) since it just dropped.
