[DISCUSSION] Android Nougat 7.0 on S3 i9300 - Galaxy S III General

Just wanted to start a discussion here
what are your thoughts about nougat, do you think we will get a stable build on our i9300
how good (or bad) will the performance be?
I am the opinion that our great devs will manage to make a stable nougat build anytime soon.
as i didnt saw a device running 7.0 yet i cant say anything about my thoughts of the performance

we cant get Nougat till google releases its source codes
if they are not going to do so, we cannot get any N build.

They are already pushing the Android 7.0 source code.

i cant waiting for this hehe, shv e210k aka galaxy s3 is good phone (still )
about next week we see mods ?

oh really? thats nice :highfive:
so we might rock with android n in this or next month if devs works will go on well

lol i have marshmallow on my i9300 which i use as a night clock since my main device is the iPhone 6s.
we can all just look at the iPhone 5 and be jealous that it will be getting iOS 10 even 4 years after it's release (it was released the same year as the GS3 - 2012).
but anyway I'll definitely install nougat on my i9300 if and when it will be availble, wish CM will continue supporting it, i can't wait

I have seen that our S3 mantainer (Simon Shields) is already active on cm-14 branch. Sounds very promising...

Our maintainer is already active on CM14 branches and I don't see any reason to why it wouldn't happen, saw this insane article saying Nougat will never come to the S3 because it's a 4 year old device:
http://dailysunknoxville.com/android-7-0-nougat-means-farewell-galaxy-s3/92008815
What about the Galaxy S original models that are 6 years old right now, they have smooth Marshmallow and very probably Nougat and newer too, and so will the S3 far to the future

First ask @forkbomb444 whether he is working above nougat

Hi, I'm new user of XDA, I have a question,
CM13 for i9300 was released in december 2015 so do you think CM14 come for december ?
Any other ROM based 7.0 come to our device or we have to wait CyanogenMod to have other ROM based to it ? (Haxynox for exemple..)
Thank you
Sorry for my bad english, I'm french, and Google's translation is more bad..

@Jailbreakdance Well... I know it Form the Galaxy Nexus, that CyanogenMod Builds/Versions aren't released by Cyanogenmod themself, but from its devices' maintainers... Just look on some devices in get.cm - Some devices still even have CM11 nightlies, while others have CM12.1 or 13. It just relies on its devices' maintainers.

Do you think the i9300 will work smooth on Nougat? i have Marshmallow now on my i9300 and it works like crap, has a lot of lag and it's very very slow.

Download L Speed to CM13 if you hate lag, it speeds up the phone greatly and makes everything so smooth, I would say it turn the phone to a S4 in performance, or a bit less. Make sure to select heavy mode when starting the app, it doesn't take off anything like animations and leaves everything looking normal and animated, still much faster :good:

Battery draining like hell. And the sound quality and loudness terrible dont know how to fix it but the other way phone looks cool multi tasking is great apps opening faster but not fast as 4.3.

We will definitely get at least a buggy cm14 build for i9300.There is some cm14 commits for s3 by forkbomb on cm.gerrit website. But seems like cm13 will be abandoned when cm14 released officially.
Plus, Lord Boeffla will not provide any kernel support for cm14.

Samsung. .please Give us 4.4 with the new UI

I know that Sammy guys lurk here around and since there is no new 8 inch note. Pro ..
I wish Samsung would update the n5100 with kit kat directly with the new UI. ..

According to me Samsung will release 4.4 to 8.0 because the note:
- They want to force the customer to buy new equipment
4.4'll get if you come later android.
Here in Poland we have not yet even 4.2.2

There wont be any update to NOTE 8 from SAMSUNG - even 4.3 will not happen. Sad but true - NOTE 8 is sold out, hardly available on some markets already, popularitiy of N8 is weaker than original first NOTE 10,1 which also got till 4.1.2 only - and is also dead for SAMSUNG already.
You would think that Samsung would at least give us 4.3 for the smart watch integration. I thought that's why they pushed out the updates for the S3 and the Note 2.
Take matters into your own hands! CM 11 ~ Android 4.4.2
Samsung does not provide an update for Polish .. And I thought that Samsung is more concerned about the updates ..
If note 8 is obsolete. Why is there a no 8 inch note pro version?..
I think the 8.4 pro version would be the most sold of the 4 new tablets announced
I believe we should get atleast 4.3 with trim and gear support. .. More useful for the n5100 with phone capabilities than a note 3 or s4
I don't care if they don't release update for a particular country as long as you can flash another country update using Odin

Not that any of the chit-chat in here is going to make any difference of what Samsung has already planned but imo, i guess this is the end of the line for note 8, as much as we all would like to think it isn't, even if it's way too early but oh well ... note 10.1 had 4.1.2 as the end of it's line, long dropped when it could've support all the newer android versions but it's all about marketing * forthe 2014 edition one*, so i guess we're waiting for almost a miracle to get 4.3 or jump to 4.4 according to samsung's policy, the only hope is that there isn't a newer note except that freaking large 12.2 or the bit older note 10.1 (2014) edition
i know i could easily flash any of the avaliable custom roms but touchwiz as much as most of us hate it is loaded with cool features "even if most of the time aren't used* that is missed on stock android
I got my 8.0 as a gift from the wife which is carrier based so I am on 4.1.2 and it don't seem like At&t will update any android tablets at all especially Samsung since it seems they rip apart the updates anyway and take away key features like galaxy gear support and Knox container.

I understand that wish, but the chance that we get this ****ty KNOX or Region Lock with 4.3/4.4 is very high, so no, please no update
On the news of GSMArena i read that note 8 will update to android 5 and after that possibility.
But i disappointed with samsung about updates...

If they cared about Note 8 device itself, they would already launch an update together with Note 2/S3 in order to get more possible GEAR buyers. I quess for that price they were selling N8 - sold qtys were too small to keep Samsung maintaining this device at fresh state. S3/N2 sold milions so possible customer base for GEAR was much higher - therefore the rush. With the army of new 2014 tablets, if N8 will get 4.3 we could be happy - but do not expect any new software (S-NOTE ot that new UI from them). We will just get old software base same as N2 got with 4,3 update - it hasnt new Snote officially like N3, (but it is possible to run - thats another story.)
I am also going back to 4.1.2 - some quirks that they disabled in 4.2.2 update make me not more happy than lockscreen widgets - so i am reverting back also because of TabletUi. And already searching for 8" Windows 8 tablet - as soon as ASUS Note8 will be out, i might get it if there will be 3G version (but doesnt have hdmi, pity). I wont buy any other Android tablet anymore - i still need more desktop to use, 3G and JumpDesktop via RDP to my server makes Note8 perfect companion, but it will be better to run my programs natively on the go and i can ditch S-Note app to full MS ONE NOTE and full Excel layout compatibility with my customers.
If samsung didn't provide an 4.4 update for the note 8 thise will be the last samsung device i'll buy n i don't wanna hear some hardware **** compatibility i've had enough from the frist galaxy
So say goodbye to your galaxy, because we will not see any more updates past 4.2.2.

Have you tried Civato's 4.2.2? Been my DD for a while now and does quite well for me. VNC works well to work laptop so connection has been smooth.
As far as Win8 goes I've been running the Dell Venue Pro 8 (64Gb on board and 64Gb uSD) for a couple months and must say Dell did this right. Odd size 8.3 screen so cases and protectors a challenge. Great screen, very snappy processor and overall a great buy. (got mine for $320) You might want to look at it.

A big reason why I didn't care as much for the unveiled TabXPros they launched. They aren't supporting the tablet they overcharged for last spring, why should I buy another tablet from them?
And I was mulling the GPe G-Pad and the N8.4Pro, easier decision now.

what, if you watched some of CES 2014 presentations, Samsung bring with new 4.4 UI that never going to make it to CM 11. Don't take me wrong I love what CM does, but i have love and hate relationship with Samsung and its flagship UI (TouchWiz, or new UI called Magazine UI)...
In addition, there's, as far as I can see, no stable CM 11 version for Note 8, except BeanStalk 4.3's CM based ROM, but still nothing officially supported. if you check Note 8 developer section, you will see there's not a lot of development going on for our note 8 tablet.
unless some brave developer(s) jump in and port Note 3 4.3 stock ROM to our Note 8.0
@sbrissen doing a great job with Official CM, so one Developer is there @civato for a stockbased ROM, two developer are here @ryukiri make OMNI for us, in future (when this odd storage problem is fixxed) OMNI is Official.
Offcource there are more Devs, great Devs, but this Three are the popular in the Note 8 Section (since i am lurking here )
A port from the Note 3 is really, really bad ass hard work. You musst port them over from Quallcomm to Exynos, thats really hard. So don't expect this.
The only thing i missed is a Custom Kernel like civatos for CM

I'm willing to attempt to make a custom kernel this summer when I have more free time. Right now, I'm super pressed on time due to loads of school work, tests, and stuff.
And to clarify some confusion, Omni IS official for us right now, just no nightlies yet as I'm still working on adding support in the kernel. Also, PAC 4.4 will be official when everything is ready. (We're all working to add new features and stabilizing stuff to give you guys the best possible experience).

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S5 Google Edition

Dears,
How is everyone doing?
I have been an Android user for many years (Nexus Flagship to be precise), last year I switched to the Galaxy S4 GPE and it was an amazing phone.
After the release of Galaxy S5, I have been waiting patiently for the release of the GPE, but there are no words yet other than the rumors, speculations, Google putting it's image on the store instead of the S4 by mistake. And that's it.
You may be wondering what this topic is about, I need an advise from you guys on:
1- Is there any hope for it to be released, or was the rumors about Google not going through the trouble of releasing it because of the heart rate and finger sensors.
2- If yes, how long do you think we will wait?
3- I HATE samsung TouchWIz and the bloats that comes with it, is there any custom Stock ROM for it yet?
4- Is there a stable Cyanogenmod for the S5 ?
Regards,
Oh, forgot to mention, the reason why I'm not interested in any other GPE devices is that they all together lack one thing I think it's important to have in a smartphone, a (DECENT CAMERA), every device released by Google whether it was a Nexus or something else lacks a good camera. :crying: as a photographer/multimedia user and a blogger, it is a necessary for me.

Just wondering if our device is still going to get the Lollipop update in the future. I have seen loads of news on the Shield tablet receiving the update but what about us?
The Nexus 7 2013 is having a price drop, is it worth jumping ship?

i'm an nvidia fan, i loved the tegra 3 and tegra 4 too!
I would assume we will get the update, but no idea when. But when you compare to other devices, nothing much outside of the Nvidia Shield Tab, and Nexus devices, have officially gotten their update and even more delays are probably caused from the buggnyness of 5.0.0 vs 5.0.2, so waiting to release updates is sort of in the best interest of all OEM's at the moment.
Patience and hell, the stock KK still is pretty good on my note. Sure it has the touchscreen issue opening with the cover but a quick on/off fixes that right up and everything runs great on it.

Maybe, but really it is a super minor issue that could even be chalked up to the screen cover tech or pen input tech itself. Really I would rather the screen cover not turn on the screen and I just hit the button either way.
On a gaming note, if you like Tanks, or play World of Tanks on PC or X360, you need to check out WoT Blitz on the this tab, it looks and works great.

There won't ever be any custom roms because Nvidia's source code and GIThub are a mess, and everyone who's tried to do it has ended up running into a wall at some point. There's a custom kernel, but when I tried it my tab became very stuttery, and overclocking seemed to have no effect on gaming performance... it just ruined the battery life.

[Q] Galaxy S5 or S5+?

Hi,
I'm currently still on the Galaxy S4 i9505, running a ported GPE firmware.
Sadly, Samsung never came through with the Galaxy S5 GPE, so I'll have to make a difficult decision for my next Smartphone.
I was hoping for the new Nexus, but it's just too large for my taste. The Moto X 2014 is a great phone, but the small battery and less than perfect camera are making me a bit reluctant to buy it. Sony Xperia Z3 is a good device, but they have never been the fastest updaters. Also, the Camera on the latest Sony phones is not so great, the sensor might be OK, but Sony kills details with their over-aggressive noise cancelling tech.
So, that leaves me with the "old" Nexus 5 (old processor, small battery and mid-range camera) or one of the Galaxy S5 models.
Now here's my problem: I could get the Galaxy S5 SM-900F, or the S5+ SM-901F. The 901F is the obvious choice, because it comes with the newer Snapdragon 805 SoC. However, I'm not planning on using Touchwiz for more than 5 Minutes, so I need a phone with good CM/ASOP support. I'm a bit scared, that the S5+ will be a "niche" product and won't get many devs. Since Google Play Edition probably won't be happening for the S5 in any of it's shapes, that's my only chance.
Now, what do all of you think?
Do I have a chance with either of the S5 models or should I rather comprmised and go with the Moto X 2014 since that has a clean android interface and will get updated at about the same time as the GPE devices? Might there still be a GPE Galaxy S5? Will Samsung eventually relent and slim down Lollipop and tighten their Update schedule? Rumours point at a 2014 release of Android 5 on the S5 and Note 4, but does that include the new S5+?
Thanks for your ideas!
Get the 901F, I have it for about a month and it's the best phone I have ever used you won't be disappointed
Thanks. I'm not worried about the phone performance, but about dev supporz, from Samsung and from XDA...
Has this been rooted, debloated and/or Cyanogenmodified yet?
Plus is a wasted space tbh. G900F is the way to go in term of develompent. Roms. Programs and so on.

From Samsung, no worry, it will come as for others products.
From devs support here on xda, there's nothing yet:
- root is ok (see here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/help/sm-g901f-to-s5-how-to-root-t2882104)
- custom recovery not properly yet (only one chinese version here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55667472&postcount=175)
but it does not support aroma interface
- custom ROM does not exists yet
If you only want custom ROM with S5, choose G900* model but product is not as good as G901F.
If not, best product is G901F but need to wait for Devs.
Best regards
Franky

Hi,
I'm currently still on the Galaxy S4 i9505, running a ported GPE firmware.
Since Google Play Edition probably won't be happening for the S5 in any of it's shapes, that's my only chance.

bear in mind
once you flash cyanogen or anything not touchwiz based. you losed camera functionality. 120fps slow mo and 4k will not be in cyanofgen as the samsung camera app is based on the touchwoiz framework
I can live with losing slow motion and 4k. What I really need is HDR in Google Camera. This is a problem on the S4...do you know how the S5 does here?
I really y hate Samsung for dropping GPE devices, and Google for not making an updated Nexus 5...?

HDR works in google camera. apparently though the quality isnt as good as stock as per usual
well thats what ive heard anyway
personally id rather wait until the camera CM provides can match the stock in terms of modes. or google camera can use extra modes
Never ever ever ever go with Plus-phones from Samsung. They never have as much development as the non-plus versions.

That's what I'm afraid of.
Well, I'll wait a bit longer, tilp the official Lollipop rollout begins, maybe there will be some surprises. After all, there is that picture of the S5 running stock Android on www.android.com which might mean there is a GPE phone coming...

Hi, you are thrue, but 900F will be stopped and replaced by 901F in europe, so devploment would come quick
And snap 805 on 1920 screen geave a beast ! ^^
We already have the first custom rom for 901f with tw or nova launcher and most important fully debloated. Check the android development section.

why do devs never buy plus versions? also why cant they dev for phones they dont own?
The problem is some of us dont have a choice, EE is by far best provider in uk and they no longer supply 900f, much of europs is also exclusivy 901f now.
at&t sprint etc. got own section on site but not 901f.

[Discussion] Updates About The Official Oreo Update

Hi Guys In This Thread We Will Talk About The Official Oreo Update For Note 5
Any one knows any new news
Kindly post it :good:
https://www.sammobile.com/samsung-galaxy-android-8-o-update
The weird thing For Now That They Put the Galaxy s6 in (These Galaxys may or may not get Android 8.0) category
And You can see in gsm arena they that galaxy s6 is planned To be Upgraded .
But They put The note 5 in (These Galaxys will not get Android 8.0) category
And If you asked me why I’m talking too much about galaxy s6 and the connection between it and the note 5 i find the answer pretty obvious ,
actually if you compare the hardware between them you will find that they have the same Chipset and the same CPU and the same GPU !!!!!
So You Can Say It’s Not A Hardware issue .
If oreo will not come to note5 and came for s6e then the devs will port it for note5

From Sammy firmware, like S8, S9 and Note 8, the problem are the kernel and libs, bur more for this last; And from AOSP, someone make a build and share in this forum.

I hope , but it will be a stupid move from Samsung
Accordoing to me , Samsung won't give Oreo to Galaxy S6. Because it have taken two major upgrades.
We can only wait for Galaxy A8 (2016). But on the other hand, it's not a flagship device. So, maybe Samsung will give Oreo to Galaxy A8 (2016).
There is no hope for me.
It's a joke not to update at least the s6 and note 5.
Especually since people went two years nearly with the note 4 and 5 being the only notes. And Samsung didn't give either of them justified updates making up for that fact.
Its not Samsung though. Sadly all companies are like this. Google is pretty much no better. And the only ones that give any more have weak uis in comparison.
And anyone claiming about i phones getting updates is clearly too niave to speak on the matter
Note 5/S6 Edge will receive at least 7.1.1. For Example Note 4 start with 4.4.4 and received 5.0.1>5.1.1>6.0.1=3 updates. Note 5 start 5.1.1 and receive 6.0>7.0=2. Next between android 7.0 and 8.0 are not much changes. So why no called 7.5? Maybe merketing and full of numers are reserved only for the newest devices.
This is why I'll never get a Samsung phone ever again. They are only supported for 2 Android versions, the software sucks, lack of support for Exynos cpu.
I've been impressed with the Xiaomi's I've used. The screens are not as good as Samsung. But even Samsung's screens are not good compared to LG.
