Ok.. so i wont bore you with my mock review until the end, so that I can get some questions out first : (Im coming from a Wizard)
1) In the wizard, I was able to click on telephone numbers in MOST applications and dial straight from there. Specifically the web browser. I would search for the name of a place, the first link in google would have the address and number, I would click on the number and be dialing. Im guessing this was a PIE thing, but wanted to see what the deal was
2) The most annoying thing so far, is my inability to highlight multiple items. In my Wizard, I was able to go to the email screen and if there were 8 messages there, I could press firmly into the first message, slide my finger down to the last message and click delete. I am not able to highlight multiple items, and ive tried different pressure settings etc. Help.
3) Similar to 2.... I am unable to highlight text, atleast with my finger, for coy paste purposes
4) I am not able to get the setting where face down will mute the ringer. Ive tried Diamond Tweak, manual registery editing, nothing. Face down... the phone will ring everytime
5) When someone sends me a youtube link in an email and I click on it, it takes me to the youtube page (im on edge so, slowly) but cant get the youtube video to play. It loads the page, except the video window
6) What is the ideal screen sensitivity and pressure settings in the registry. Its the one thing that im a bit surpsied by, I know it is not a capacitive screen, but it takes some getting used to how much pressure it requires compared to an iPhone screen for example
I will write about my impressions after two more days to give myself ample time to get used to it so there is no wizard bias... :0

This is something I'd be particularly interested in .
Even though I use currently a phone with a capacitive screen I own a Wizard too. How would you say is the difference to the Wizard respectively how would you rate the sensitivity generally?
I'm answering to what I know...

In the message screen go to "Menu->Select->Some" then you will be able to select a group of items.

This works for me!

This is due to lack of flsh support in Opera 9.5. You can play flash videos within CorePlayer.

I had an iPhone, gave it to my wife... the iphone screen is awesome, from day one, responsiveness, finger touch etc etc. The Wizard screen was ok, the feel wasnt there, but then again it wasnt big and i wasnt doing much with my finger anyway. Compared to the Wizard, the Touch HD is better, but since you are doing so much more on the screen and with your finger, it isnt as good as it needs to be. Twice the pressure is needed from the iphone, it doesnt "feel" good under my finger, feels like i have to fight against it to scroll the TF3D scroll thing (again comparing a resisitve screen to a capacitive one). Touch wise, it is excellent, I dont have to force buttons or anything. Im mainly complaining about gestures and TF3D. Overall finger friendliness, if the iphone is an 8, then the touch HD is a 6 and the wizard is a 4.
For 4: It can be done, I've been lurking around here for days now and I recall seeing an app that covers this exact thing - I *think* it's either SKTools or the Advanced Customisation Tool - I'm about to load up on or the other shortly, so if I find out I'll be back and let oyu know (if you haven't found it already in the meantime of course!)
6 : again I've seen some mention of registry setting alteerations to adjust this - but for me, I've used the same method as I did on my diamond and my screen is VERY sensitive - enough for me anyway.
Go and fire up the screen alignment process again - this time when doing it use the stylus and hover over the cross hair then very lightly rest it on the cross hair center - applying a tiny amount more pressure until it moves (it moves with a v. small amount of pressure) - seems to set pressure from this process to some extent. Whether or not this REALLY works, or it's utter placebo I truly dont know - but mine's totally fine and that's all I did Worth a shot I guess
The TouchFLO interface might mean that finger pressure always translates as scrolling, but if you want to select anything then you have to use a fingernail or the stylus. This is how it works on my Touch (Elf) - to scroll the screen I have to use the pad of my finger. If I use a more pointed pressure then I'm selecting stuff. I quite like this system - it differentiates between sweeping gestures and detailed touches.
Try using the stylus or a fingernail to select text or multiple emails. It might work.
(If it doesn't then I'll be annoyed too!)

I too would like to know if Opera can do what the OP wants in question 1?? That is one thing I love about my Iphone as it doesn't have a cut and paste but I can just click on the number in safari.
Can Opera do this? I was also looking at Skyfire today and was wondering if it did this and also when/if it will be available soon in the UK?
The select several option for email works.. so one problem down. Also ive realized that the screen sensitivity is just something I will have to get used to.
I have installed Flash Lite 3.1 for you tube and it seems to be working fine.
More updates as I have em. Anyone know why number links arent clickable in the browser?
Good thread, clears some things up.
I wonder how the pressure thing is.
How does it compare to an Elf (my current/old device) for example?
My HD should be in the mail tomorrow, but you never know with TNT mail.
I think its one of those things... you jsut need to get used to it...
Hi,
The last two phones I had have both been Blackberry's.
I tried an iPhone recently (1 week) and just found myself pausing to do things that I would do on the blackberry very quickly.
It was almost like I had to completely stop what I was doing and give all my attention
and thought to navigating my way around the iphone, where as with the bb, I seem
to be able to do many tasks with one hand and dont have to think about the task
too much.
I'm wondering if I switch to a G1 how will I go on. Will I find myself waiting for the OS to catch up, continually opening the keyboard to do simple tasks etc?
I like the idea of placing shortcuts on the home screen to dial numbers etc, are there other shortcuts like this?
One task I find myself doing on the bb a lot is taking a quick photo and sending it to a single email address. (the same address every time).
Would this be possible on the G1?
I press the side camera button which opens the camera app,
take the photo by pressing the trackball,
move the trackball to the right and press once.
This gives me the sharing options, "send as email" is the top one.
Click the trackball which adds the photo as an attachment,
type my two letter alias in the To field,
scroll to the subject, type something.
Click the trackball once more and press send.
It sounds a lot when you read it but its pretty quick and simple. Any way of doing this without opening the keyboard?
Thanks
Mike
The camera after taking a pic will offer 4 options, Save/Set As/Share/Delete.
With SnapShotPro you get these options, Save/Delete/Share/Edit.
Touch Share and it will give you a list of options....Gmail/Email/MMS/Myspace/Picsay...the more apps that are able to use your camera the more options...
You only need to open the keyboard to start typing the contact and it will autofind the name for you. But you will still need to open it since there isnt a onscreen keyboard for it yet.
I love snapphoto.. but jesus it's slow to save a photo.

The biggest hindrance to super quick operations on the G1 is the lack of on screen keyboard. Without one you'll be much happier on a BB.
hopefully we will get an on screen kb soon. Perhaps with cupcake or it ported over from another phone. It would be so useful for small simple tasks like thsi

I'm being drawn to the G1, an on screen keyboard for occasional use will be very nice.
I'm not keen on the G2 as this will only have an on screen keyboard so it seems?
IMO the real problem is developers making user workflows that require using a keyboard. In many cases I feel that if an app is written properly the need for a keyboard (flip-out or onscreen) should be minimized unless you're doing heavy data entry. As the apps get better over time it's my hope this situation will improve.
Has anyone notice the following quirks on the Imagio? Trying to determine if I got a lemon and need to exchange:
1 -Unusually bright background with the default settings. It seems like if a picture has black image in the camera, the device is able to display the black, but just in general use, as you slide the slider to the different views, it appears that each of the pages has a very bright (almost white) background.
2 - Characters not appearing when typing on IE or Opera: It seems that when you type something into the IE or Opera, there's either a severe delay in displaying what is typed or it just won't show at all until you hide the keyboard.
3 - Screen rotation: One of the things that was nice about the touch pro 2 (yes, I traded mine in for the imagio) is that when you slid out the keyboard, the device would rotate the screen. Given that the imagio doesn't have a slide out keyboard, I would have assumed they'd have built in the screen rotation as a default for every screen. Is mine not working properly or is this something everyone is noticing.
Just some of the things I've noticed so far (only had it for 2 days). I'm sure I'll find more
Oh - has anyone found any screen protectors and a iPhone-ish case for these things yet?
I don't see the first two quirks you listed on my phone.
The third is a known problem, and can be fixed with an app called: gyrator

This is not a problem. The phone is designed only to rotate in certain programs. If you want to have more control over that, there are other programs out there to make changes, like the person before me mentioned.

1- Camera sounds like a lemon
2 - keyboard driver is messed up, hard reset and you should be gtg (had same problem with that extracted diamond2 keyboard on my touch pro)

Thanks for the info Sweeny. I should clarify item 1 in that it's not isolated to the camera so much as it's isolated to the background intesity on the LCD. I took a side-by-side comparison picture against the Touch Pro 2 (which seemed to be working very well) and sent it into HTC when I filed a bug with them.
Hopefully they'll tell me the phone is defective and I can request a replacement from Verizon. Otherwise, something needs to be fixed on HTC's side.
The better description is that it's like someone took an LCD TV and just cranked up the brightness on it. So instead of having a black background, you have a high intensity gray background.
One more quirk...
Here is a different quirk: On the device lock page (the slider), it has a "1" next to the lock picture. This is supposed to be for new emails/texts/messages/calls, but I don't have any. When I do get a new call (etc.), it shows as '2'. Why does it think I have a new message (or whatever)? Is there a way to reset it?

Try this little file. It worked when I had an unread SMS I couldn't get rid of.

I have noticed the same thing too. It seems like the SMS messenger via Touch Flo is totally updated from from the Touch Pro 2 and I'd have to say I think it's been "down"-dated.

Yep I've posted that little tool as well, and it has worked for me in the past as well.
Cons:
The text input is a bit weird. It seems that if you start input in the middle of the page, a lot of blank spaces will be automatically added before the starting position.
The number of characters is limited for text input.
There is no option for the text format, such as font, size, color, etc.. No paragraph style either...
The S-Pen input is a bit slow, although acceptable.
Sometimes the S-Pen tip is shifted quite far away from the point on the screen it just drew, but sometimes it works much better. I am not sure whether it really behaves differently at different time, or it's just my wrong impression. Maybe it depends on other sensors?
Cannot insert any special shapes, such as a circle or a rectangle.
The background style is limited. Sometimes I would like a completely black background. The same for the page layout.
It would be great if the memos are searchable + character recognizing feature.
The multi-page (dock?) feature is inconvenient to use. It should be much more intuitive than it is now.
Cannot edit the inserted images/photos. I think it should be able to crop an image at least.
It is a bit slow, when displaying a thumbnail for all the memos, when start editing a memo, or when saving a memo.
The desktop widget of the S-Memo only displays the middle part of a page, instead of the full page.
Pros:
The S-Memo can be invoked anywhere with the S-Pen.
The screen capture feature with the S-Pen is sometimes useful.

I have no clue about this. The thing is that, sometimes it works well, sometimes not so well. I don't know why... Maybe it's my wrong impression...
I even suspect that maybe it has been optimized for certain holding position, so I tried to calibrate the positional sensor of the phone (available in the settings)... I don't know whether this is really relevant...
Come on people it is just released. Will be alot better when the SDK in December is released!
No it's not
The S memo works fine for me.
A lot of functionality was done away with when manufacturers went with capacitive screens because there is a limit to what you can do with a finger on a capacitive screen.
For example, there were many more options for input into a calendar which were too cumbersome for fingers, so they were dropped. Things like, but not limited to; recurring events.
Now I have it back, and lots of other USEFUL functions.
I can't count the number of times that someone has given me a phone number or address but there had not been time to enter it with the one finger on a touch screen method so a piece of paper had to be used, if there was one.
When the capacitive screen was adopted en mass, the baby stylus was through out with the bath water.
I'm glad to have it back.
The s-memo tool is fine.
It is similar to the old Windows Mobile Notes
Yes, I also think the S-Pen is quite handy. Nevertheless the S-Memo application has a lot of space to improve, to make the S-Pen even more handy.
At present I somehow prefer Evernote and its Skitch tool, although Skitch is not pressure sensitive.
I just want more space. The rest I can live with. I want the equivalent of A4, just let me scroll around. That would make me happy with it. Still, taking notes and attaching to calender appointments like a champ.

The S Memo function works fine for me and I think it is a great feature.
My gut feeling is that you are missing the point of the s memo.
Think about this - the purpose of s memo is to consolidate the paper/pen combination into the phone. That, and to give you an easy way to import that information into other apps.
So I feel the s memo is a quick 'get this quickly into my phone', and if you want to edit it (background, crop, etc) you move it into a relevant program.
You still have some valid points, but I think many of them are just wrong expectations. it's not supposed to be a word processor. It's more quick and dirty.
Would love stylus input on skitch

This is the only device capable of changing my poor opinion regarding capacitive screens and the "finger friendly" software.
After seven years enjoying with the stylus using it in different devices, now with the NOTE I"ll be able to have the best of both worlds: The precision of the stylus and the multitouch feature off a capacitive screen.
All the best.
Anyone know how do s memo auto sync to google docs instead manually sync..?

The main beef I have with S-Memo is that it shrinks imported images down, reducing their detail. I haven't spent enough time with the different tools to figure out a decent workflow yet, so perhaps there's a better way of doing it.
I've also tried editing video with the Video Editor and it's quite frustrating.
EDIT: I found out that, in S-Memo, clicking an imported image for 2sec brings up resize handles. So it retains its quality, it's just that the default import size is quite low initially.
I am secretly wishing someone ports Microsoft OneNote into Android and I can really use this over skydrive and do post processing in the desktop. (This is how I have been doing between my tablet and desktop)
To willstay:
Have a look at MobileNoter. it's a paid app for using Onenote on Android devices. Haven't tried it myself.
The S-pen and Memo is fine, I use a Wacom tablet for design and this is very similar tech. The objective is to provide a quick and simple note facility for those on the go, ie to jot a number or a quick sketch of a location or idea.
It's not for budding artists to create the next Constable or CAD engineers to finish the new Space Shuttle. Man get a grip people. I've spent more dollar on a full touch white board with less accuracy.

Thank you.
Well put.
I too missed the stylus, and S memo does a good job for what it is intended, quick, simple note taking.
It's actually an improvement over the old windows mobile notes.
And for a capacitive screen, it is excellent.
There are other apps for the Note, including Autodesk Sketchbook Android for engineers who want to draw

point 5 could be because of your palm?
Could it be because the base of your palm touch your sreen?

This is for anyone who has seen or received there S7 Edge, Im wondering if the EDGE SCREEN works independently of the main screen if you are playing a video and you get a notification. I did see the video of someone viewing a snake documentary and the picture wrapped both sides of the phone ( Edge screens) But im wondering if you get a message or notification if you can access them on the edge screen without disrupting the main video. I use SLING BOX alot and this is my main concern in upgrading to this phone. The NOTE EDGE does it and im hoping they brought that ability back for this phone!. Thanks :good::good:
When the screen is in use the edge features aren't really relegated to the edge. Notifications come in normally and edge functions are in a pull out drawer that blurs the rest of the screen. The only things that take place exclusively on the edge happen when the screen is off. I am still playing with the settings so if I have missed something I am sure someone will correct me.
Based on my experiences some of the notifications will appear on screen and you can interact with them without disturbing the current workflow but others require you to go into the app. Some of the coding is through Samsung and touchwiz but it's largely through Google and the way notifications are handled with 6.0. Of course other roms would be able to alter it but as of now stock TW is the only base to go off of.
i would basically want to just see the text message or notification, not necc reply to it, that i figured you would have to open the app but whether it takes over the rest of the screen is what im wondering.
BUMP anybody able to answer this question, really interested in getting this phone if the EDGE screen is able to work independently of the main screen !
No you can't operate the edge screen separately from the main screen. It's just a continuation. Anyways, the edge itself is so small that it would be extremely frustrating to have to try and touch things only on the edge. You have the edge menu thing that you can swipe out from anywehre pretty much and it does stuff with the screen off. Aside from that it's just for your viewing pleasure IMO.
I just want to be able to see a text message on the wndow if i was say watchin tv on the main screen , not necessarily reply to it, i know its mostly a show thing but I hatehaving to shut off hte slingbox to check out who texted me in middle of watching a game
