Strange Imagio Quirks?

Has anyone notice the following quirks on the Imagio? Trying to determine if I got a lemon and need to exchange:
1 -Unusually bright background with the default settings. It seems like if a picture has black image in the camera, the device is able to display the black, but just in general use, as you slide the slider to the different views, it appears that each of the pages has a very bright (almost white) background.
2 - Characters not appearing when typing on IE or Opera: It seems that when you type something into the IE or Opera, there's either a severe delay in displaying what is typed or it just won't show at all until you hide the keyboard.
3 - Screen rotation: One of the things that was nice about the touch pro 2 (yes, I traded mine in for the imagio) is that when you slid out the keyboard, the device would rotate the screen. Given that the imagio doesn't have a slide out keyboard, I would have assumed they'd have built in the screen rotation as a default for every screen. Is mine not working properly or is this something everyone is noticing.
Just some of the things I've noticed so far (only had it for 2 days). I'm sure I'll find more
Oh - has anyone found any screen protectors and a iPhone-ish case for these things yet?

I don't see the first two quirks you listed on my phone.
The third is a known problem, and can be fixed with an app called: gyrator

This is not a problem. The phone is designed only to rotate in certain programs. If you want to have more control over that, there are other programs out there to make changes, like the person before me mentioned.

1- Camera sounds like a lemon
2 - keyboard driver is messed up, hard reset and you should be gtg (had same problem with that extracted diamond2 keyboard on my touch pro)

Thanks for the info Sweeny. I should clarify item 1 in that it's not isolated to the camera so much as it's isolated to the background intesity on the LCD. I took a side-by-side comparison picture against the Touch Pro 2 (which seemed to be working very well) and sent it into HTC when I filed a bug with them.
Hopefully they'll tell me the phone is defective and I can request a replacement from Verizon. Otherwise, something needs to be fixed on HTC's side.
The better description is that it's like someone took an LCD TV and just cranked up the brightness on it. So instead of having a black background, you have a high intensity gray background.

One more quirk...
Here is a different quirk: On the device lock page (the slider), it has a "1" next to the lock picture. This is supposed to be for new emails/texts/messages/calls, but I don't have any. When I do get a new call (etc.), it shows as '2'. Why does it think I have a new message (or whatever)? Is there a way to reset it?

If you use TouchFLO, do you show a 1 on any of the tabs like messaging? Or if you go to Start, All Applications, and launch Messaging, do you see a 1 next to any of the accounts?

I have the same issue, I have 1 new email showing on the email screen. I have no email accounts setup on the phone, I use a seperate app for my work email. I'd love to know how to reset the counter.

hold out for the mirror screen protector. i had one for my omnia and they are amazing. easy to install and virtually scratch proof.

I have noticed the same thing too. It seems like the SMS messenger via Touch Flo is totally updated from from the Touch Pro 2 and I'd have to say I think it's been "down"-dated.

Yep I've posted that little tool as well, and it has worked for me in the past as well.

Leo NOT compatible with most applications, due to iPhone-like screen

Yesterday I purchased a HD2 also called Leo, running original WWE ROM from HTC
I have installed several apps including Sloved dictionaries, Lingosoft dictionaries.
Some are in "touch mode" version, some are not. Those apps who are NOT in touch mode, are virtually impossible to operate, due to the new screen. Small Icons and scroll down menu are almost impossible to "touch" they never give the correct results.
Leo seems NOT very compatible. The reason, I guess, is the new screen type: it it different, it is similar to iPhone. They call it resistive screen.
Both iPhone and HD2 you cannot use stylus or pen (simply the screen does not react). Both cannot use the nail of the finger (it does not react).
The thumb and the finger tip areas (which is the only area which can input into the device) are too gross and wide to be precise....
You need to use the soft part of the finger (I guess in English it is called finger tip, or end of the finger), below the nail, in order to have the screen react to your inputs.
I have tried many times: in my software the small icons on top bars, and all scroll down menus ARE TOO SMALL to be tipped with finger tip or thumb tip.
They cannot accessed, or they give wrong results or you need tens of attempts to get it right. Most of the time inputs are not responsive, sometimes they are, with unpredictable or wrong results (for example you open phone ring scroll down menu and click on a ring type "A" and the phone interpret as ring type "C")
This is terrible...altough I admit the 4.3" screen is awesome and superb...What can be done?
1. is there an application which restore or adjust the screen sensibility so that it can be used with NON-TOUCH softwwares?
2. or are all developers going to release new touch-friendly version of their software...suitable to this type of screens?

They will, but it may take some time and won't happen overnight. They will have to do it to stay alive because of WM7 compatibility requirements.
It may be a (huge) inconvenience for some users like you, but it's a trend that won't be reversed.

The screen on the HD2 and the iPhone is capacitive, not resistive.

You can use a special kind of stylus, I believe some people have bought one for the iPhone on ebay. Also, HTC has patented a magnet tipped stylus which will work on capacitive touchscreens. As the HD2 is built with a 4.3 inch screen I don't think there will be much problems.
I can use my X1 without a stylus just fine.

Is it totally impossible to manage tiny acreen elements?
Is a conductive (metal) "stylus" possible?

A conductive stylus should be possible. Apparently, you get conductive plastics, which are used to package up ICs (integrated circuits), something like could work. But would would need to find a way to make it into a rod somehow. Would be expensive I imagine.
The are capacitive styluses on eBay. They are also quite cheap. However, their tips are quite large compared to a resistive stylus.
I'm going to experiment a little bit when I get my HD2 (hopefully on Friday).
But to be honest, I can use my finger for almost everything on my X1. And that was a tiny screen compared to the HD2. So I don't see the problem. Seems like a lot of people are making a fuss over nothing.

I tried to use morph gear on mine and NONE of the buttons work at all.

I guess the use of capacitive screen is only advantageous if and only if the OS and applications are designed for it. Window mobile would not be able to enjoy this benefit now. I hope WM7 would change that.

They have filed a patent yes. They haven't made it yet tho. Certainly not to the general consumer.

If you use softwares from 1996 then sure, it won't be finger friendly.
Almost all software from recent year are finger compatible.
I just went through all the software installed on my touch HD, from about 30 software installed zero are not finger friendly. The only thing I have non finger friendly is some of the WM6.1 screens.

No, no one is making a fuss. I hate the stupid posts of "visible dot matrix in the screen, HD2 is slower than other phones, HD2 has no video out and so on". But I quite get the feel of problems the poster is trying to address. You didn't get the point here, X1 is with the typical resistive screen, it is entirely different when you operate on a capacitive screen, and it is not about the size of the screen. I now start to worry about the 3rd party apps as I've been relying on many apps with my Touch HD. I really hope somehow the software developers will come out with apps exclusively support HD2 capacitive screen!

I don't understand .. sure, it's harder to press small elements. But even now a lot of software is finger friendly, and the trend will only get stronger. Actually I use only fingers with my current X1, I use stylus like once per week, since some parts of WM 6,1 can't be used well with fingers.
Is there some other problem ? What do you mean by exclusive HD2 support ?

For me personally, and, I believe, for many others, the major advantage of a capacitive screen is the glass screen surface and no need to use those stupid screen protectors anymore. I don't use outdated apps with tiny elements though, so it's not a big deal for me. If you are tied to them for some reason then it's a different story I guess...

well it doesnt need to be exclusiveto the hd2... just finger friendly would do the trick... I use my stylus only on some drop-down menus...

I got mine few minutes ago, I am using it, and I dont have ANY problem with tiny elements, maybe sometimes you need to click 2 times but nothing. 0 problems for me.

I did get the point. He said small menus are hard to press without a stylus.
I am asking why he finds this, as with a bigger screen (same resolution) the menus are now bigger. If I can use a small menu with my finger on the X1, the SIZE of the icon will be bigger on the HD2 (given the increase in screen size).
I wasn't saying that capacitive and resistive react the same way to a finger press. All the apps need, is to become finger friendly.
They won't react any differently on the HD2. Unless you have a drawing application you use, in which case that will be different.
But my original point still stands. The icons shouldn't be any harder to press on the HD2 as they will be bigger than on an X1 (I have smallish hands, but quite chunky fingers. I have press icons on the X1 fine, so I'm not worried about them on the HD2).

Even with big fingers, it's just a matter of skill. The phone detects center of pressed area and it always sends single point to the application. It does not mean that you can't press very small element with big finger, it just may be harder to hit.
I recommend simply trusting the device, not trying to do anything special ..

let me clarify what I said: let me make some more examples to make you understand what huge discomfort this "otherwise awesome screen" is giving to me:
try for example, (on any HD2) to do the following:
settings > input > options > try to change default zoom level from 200% to 100% (you need to access zoom scroll down menu)...I have tried for 20 times and I failed...sometimes I get 300% sometimes I get 75%...no way you can select the right level.
No way you can use your nails (since the settings are in a small area)
any other settings in which you need to select a choice from a scroll down menu results in a pain and several attempts...
In this condition even the internal settings on wm 6.5 are hard to accomplish...better to shift back to HD1 or to iphone, whose software is simplified enough to make the use of thumbs finger possible

Just carry a laptop round with you that has MyPhone installed on it and use that. Simple!

Browsing Issue - Hyperlink Selection

I'm very pleased with my HD2 overall, but there's one area where it comes up short in comparison to the iPhone imo: in the default zoomed out browser page view, if you click on a link (which is small, but it does briefly change colour so you know the press has registered), nothing happens - I have to zoom in (with a pinch or double press) before it will work. This is the case in both Opera and IE.
Is there by any chance a config hack to sort this? I'm new to Windows Mobile, perhaps it's a known weakness? Because the link does highlight it makes me think this is more of a software issue than a hardware one, so ought to be fixable/hackable?

when i go to google.nl and its zoomed out, i click on the right upper side to log in/sign in, so for me this aint no issue.

Just one bump in case anybody else has any thoughts (I appreciate that this isn't an issue for the poster above, but it is for me ).

You can search the forum for a solution (it was posted dozens of times across the place). You'll need to change zoom settings to achieve what you want.
Just note that you'll lose something as well. The current behavior allows you to activate onHover events (stuff that websites do when you move your mouse over an element). With default settings you get popups/menus activated without firing the link action (an option missing in the iPhone browser).

Yes, I'm having the same problem from time to time. Sometimes I can hit tiny targets and sometimes I have to zoom right in to hit a link. I guess it's just a matter of getting used to the capacitive screen.

Thanks, I found the registry setting (software,opera,info,az_overview_threshold), reduced it to 32 and haven't noticed any obvious side effects yet. This makes a big difference for me, especially when I set the minimum font size to medium in the menu settings.

[Q] Thoughts after two months

My wife recently bought a Galaxy Tab 7.7 and now after some hours of experience she has some questions:
1. When you turn off the sound it doesn't turn off everything, sounds on webpages still plays.
2. The screen unlock pattern is in the same place so it's easy to see it because of the grease the finger is leaving behind.
3. When you want to edit text in the web browser, for instance in a forum like this, and you put the marker where you want to start edit, the marker jumps 1 or more letters efter about one second. It's not a miss click, because you can see that the marker is in the correct place when you remove your finger, and then after about one seconde it jumps to another place. Extremely annoying.
4. Honeycomb does not utilise the screen size, it seems like it's made for a smaller phone with lesser resolution. Reminders and other notifications is easily missed. Text is also extremly small sometimes and even though you can read it, it's very hard to put the marker in the right spot, if you want to mark and copy a text for instance.
5. Reminders from the calendar is to discreet, it should be something that you have to turn off manually so you dont miss it.
6. Can you create a shortcut to a file on the startscreen/desktop?
7. The clock doesn't show when you make a call so you can't check the time
8. The screen locks itself quickly when you make a call, in like 10 s, even though you have set it on 5 mins. Very annoying when you want to check things on the pad during a call.
9. Adding a new phone number to a contact is very unlogical, and it takes alot of steps. Why not just have, "add phone number to contact" when you have marked the number??
10. You can't set the timer on an certain amount of hours and/or min, just a time?
11. I can't write é and ü which is used sometimes in my language, the signs ¨ and ´ just doesn't exist. But a ton of smiliys do...strange choice by Google/Samsung.... (yes, I have the local version of the OS)
12. Then it's the browser:
* You can't move tabs
* Tabs has to reload when you switch between them
* Very long procedure to add a bookmark
* You can't sort the bookmarks the way you want.
13. The music player can't do shuffle
This was just the most important things, then it's alot of other annoying things that doesn't work correctly and that are just illogical.
Overall it doesn't seem like a product that is ready for selling, If this was a computer OS it would've been called version 0.1 alfa.
If you have any tips or apps that solve the above listed things, please post here. My wife would be super happy.

I m sorry to say. All of the above can be done/customize... u just haven't look in the right place or download the right Apps..... I guess it's your first smartphone.

2. Obviously clean the screen more often, what do you expect?
3. Its a bug with no fix. ICS should fix this.
4. With apps in general? Because ICS has started a trend for better resolution support. With notifications I suggest getting glasses. Also in the themes and apps forum there is an app to increase font size called Big Font.
5. That defeats the point of a reminder.
6. No but some custom launchers like go launcher provide this option.
7. I have a wifI only version so no idea. But the clock should always stay in the bottom bar.
8. Its meant to be this way. Its a feature from smartphones. It stops your face pressing buttons on the screen when you put the speaker grill to your ear.
9. No comment.
10. For the clock/alarm app?
11. Hold the letter e (é) and u (ü) down on the Samsung keyboard.
12. The play store offers alternative browsers like opera and dolphin hd, try some.
13. ICS upgrade should fix this. But again use the play store to find alternatives.
Honeycomb is buggy, numerous reviews have stated this. The ICS upgrade is set to fix most of these issues and provide a better overall experience. The ICS upgrade is meant to be set for May.
Its not meant to be a computer. Its meant to be be a media consumption device. You've come from an iphone which is simple. Android just takes times to get used too. You probably would have been better off with am ipad. Android tablets just aren't there yet.

Mostly the webbrowser, even though you zoom max, it's very small text, and it's hard to highlight words. I will try Dolphin more extensively.

I know, but they certainly have the hardware for it, they just don't use it properly.
If Apple had an ~7 inch tablet from which you could make calls, I would've probably bought that.

It will leave finger marks anywhere your grid was anyway, other still can figure your grid shape

No, can't find a option to add the number to a contact you already have, it only creates a new contact. Maybe I'm just stupid, only got 5 years of higher IT education...
What I need to do is choose to edit the phone number, and then add the phone number to a contact that way.

Yea, this is just one of those annoying things. If the grid randomly switched place, it could've been much harder to see the pattern. But it's not very important.
It's just that when alot of things annoy you, you just start to get annoyed on other things aswell
Overall she is very happy with the tablet, it's just that it has the potential to be much much better, it's just a matter of software.

As much as I hate to mention, ICS has face recognition unlock feature which doesn't leave any grease mark for James Bond; or if you are the impatient kind like me, you could considering getting the FaceLock for apps Pro (paid app) which as similar phone lock feature for non-ICS Android devices.

You have multiple questions in one go. XD
First of all you could really re-size the screen size on running application, you could find the corresponding option in the notification bar when the tablet detects it.
Reminders and other notifications is easily missed, yes...but you could try NoLED app, or FaceLock apps Pro I mentioned earlier. (Do not use both, I tried, and miserably failed)
Text can be resized with app like BigFont. I don't use it, as it messed up with the default calendar app (though you can circumvent that with third-party calendar app)

You could use the Linda File Manager (free app) to create desktop shortcut. In the rare event you would like to create script shortcut (e.g. instant reboot script), you could try SMWidgets.

I use Overskreen (paid app) as my default browser. It can't move tabs, but the tabs doesn't reload when you switch between them (redraw, though). It has additional feature like floating browser, and background processing (such that you could listen to browser's streaming audio while phone is locked)
Yeah adding and sorting bookmarks is still a major harrass, especially when you utilize Google sync bookmark features.

I take it that you are trying to add a number from inside the phone app to an existing contact?
#1 If you are in Dialer, press the icon to the right of the number and you can either save it as a new contact, or add it to an existing contact.
#2 If you are in Logs, the trick is to long click on the entry in the left pane, select "Edit number before call", which will bring you to the dialer, and you to #1 above, where you can proceed accordingly. (If you select "Add to Contacts", it will be a new contact.*)
#3 Still in Logs, long clicking on the entry itself (on the right) will copy the number to clipboard. Which will allow other possibilities...
*This is peculiar to the Samsung phone app and I agree that they should not have done it this way. It's not how it works in Vanilla ICS on my Galaxy Nexus.

The Samsung stock calendar is rather basic. Try Business Calendar, which has advanced controls for notifications (include snooze).

Use Dolphin HD. It solves the first and the last two problems. I'm not sure why but the browser sometimes reloads when you switch on the 7.7--it didn't do so (or do so as much) on either my Galaxy Nexus (ICS) or even on my old HTC HD2 running Android Gingerbread. Might be a Honeycomb thing.

The ICS music player can do shuffle. If you are resourceful, you can install the apk. But again, there are better alternatives out there. For instance, Poweramp and PlayerPro. (I have the ICS player, but eventually settled on Poweramp.)

Wow, ok...
1) Open the dialer
2) Enter a number
3) Click the 'add to contact' icon immediately to the right of the number you just entered
4) You are immediately taken to your list of contacts
5) At this point you have 2 options, click 'New" to add a new contact or click on any contact from the list
6) Upon clicking any one of the contacts in your list, that contact is immediately opened and the new number automatically added to the list of phone numbers for that contact...from there you can specify the number type (work, home, mobile, etc.)
I honestly can't imagine a scenario any more intuitive & straight forward than this. Please describe (if you can) what would be 'better than this'?

Wrong. The taskbar on the bottom is still there during calls, and the clock is still visible. I'm looking at it right now as I type this.
For someone with 5 years of "IT higher learning", you're not exhibiting much in the way of higher intelligence here in my opinion. You are aware that there's a thing called a search engine, right? Google is kind of a popular one. Millions of people from all over the world have been using Android for several years, and nearly every question/complaint you raised in your original list has been asked, discussed & addressed by someone at some point. Instead of jumping onto a forum and ranting off your list of 'problems', you might want to poke around a bit & see if there's already an answer out there.

Seriously? Clean the screen frequently; Try a non-glossy screen protector; Use a PIN or a password to unlock the screen rather than a pattern.
3. When you want to edit text in the web browser, for instance in a forum like this, and you put the marker where you want to start edit, the marker jumps 1 or more letters efter about one second. It's not a miss click, because you can see that the marker is in the correct place when you remove your finger, and then after about one seconde it jumps to another place. Extremely annoying.
This is the one item on your list that I would call a real 'problem'. A bluetooth mouse helps if this is something you need to do very often.
4. Honeycomb does not utilise the screen size, it seems like it's made for a smaller phone with lesser resolution. Reminders and other notifications is easily missed. Text is also extremly small sometimes and even though you can read it, it's very hard to put the marker in the right spot, if you want to mark and copy a text for instance.
Honeycomb is a smartphone OS first, and a tablet OS second. ICS bridges that gap much better, but there will always be some compromises. The Android phone market is bigger (much bigger) than the tablet market, so there will always be somewhat of a slant toward smartphone functionality-wise.

This is by design, and another byproduct of honeycomb being a smartphone OS first and a tablet OS second. You may notice that the tablet does have a proximity sensor with related settings. If you make a call and pass your hand over the sensor it will blank the screen...remove your hand and the screen reappears. This mirrors the functionality you'd expect when you put the 'phone' up to your ear..again geared toward how you'd expect a smartphone to work. Honestly, I'm not sure that the target demographic for this tablet will use it as their primary mobile phone all that much. But for those that do, it's a pretty minor inconvenience...so you have to push the power button to get the screen back...just not that big of a deal.
9. Adding a new phone number to a contact is very unlogical, and it takes alot of steps. Why not just have, "add phone number to contact" when you have marked the number??

Wrong. In my opinion, you're just lazy. Android is not a kindergarten children's toy like iOS. If that's what you want or need, you should get an Apple. There's a learning curve with Android, but if you invest a bit of time, you will be rewarded with an experience that's ultimately more satisfying than iOS (at least in my opinion).
Overall it doesn't seem like a product that is ready for selling, If this was a computer OS it would've been called version 0.1 alfa.
Return it & buy an Apple.

Yeah, this and so many more "little" things is what makes me hate android. This tablet was my first device and I can safely say I will never buy another android device again. I'll probably get an I pad 4 when it comes out. I'm just sick of finding out more things my tab can't do. Its really dissapointing as the reason I chose this over an I pad was the smaller screen size but its just not worth it

You can make a similar list of annoyances or personal preferences for any tablet, so such lists are pretty useless for it is always a trade-off between annoyances and delights and for me the delights on the 7.7 far outweigh the annoyances compared to any other tablet. So rather than buy a tablet then whinge about it you should check it out first.

[Q] Touch input so bad with vaio duo 11

The touch input in this device is so bad i have to use my stylus pen to browse webs(i can never touch the back page button on google chrome instead it touches the forward page button instead),close programs(touch the top of the screen and pulling it down never works), opening the charm bar(swiping my finger from the right of the screen to the left never works too).
I tried calibrating it by searching calibrate on the charm bar's search feature but they doesn't work as well.
Any way to fix this? Its getting so annoying because i can't use the touch screen feature at all because its not precise.

Dont have one myself, but I played with one at Frys, and I gotta say I didnt see any of these issues at all! Maybe you got a bad one???

Make sure your navigation gestures start from the black bezel of the Vaio then onto the touchscreen. You can use the calibration tool, change pen and touch settings, and change double clicking of objects to single tap to make the experience better. I'm not sure if the registry change to make touch more responsive for surface rt applies to your Intel tablet.

I'm with @vinscuzzy on this one... generally speaking I detest Sony products, but this sounds like a defective unit more than anything else. I'm not sure what you mean by "calibration doesn't work as well" (grammar, people: it conveys meaning). but if you can't fix this yourself, I would definitely suggest you take it back to wherever you got it.

When i use the calibration settings whenever i try to touch the cross it shows the input to be slightly on the right. i can't even close apps or use the multitasking. Closing tabs is hard or even clicking on links on google isn't accurate at all.
I bought this machine overseas and it isn't even out in my country so replacing it is too much of a hassle.

I almost considered it. But found there is a problem with the drivers, especially with Photoshop supposedly MS and Sony are using a specific driver but its not compatible with certain apps that use a different format of driver like Photoshop for touch.
The driver developers as far as I'm aware via googling don't seem interested in fixing this issue due to cost and/or it being niche market. Maybe try other software, I hope you don't have faulty system
