so after a Month of daily usage with intensive care and torture.
I can safely say, the best thing about the SNS that is actually better than the SGS is the battery life
even with Froyo 2.2 installed on the SGS, the battery life was half as good as the SNS
i do the same amount of stuff on both phones
so the only thing that might actually be different which is the missing microSD support, might be what it's actually saving the battery life on the SNS
because i don't use NFC, so it's always Off
and the other reason might be the screen, even though it's the same SAMOLED screen, the Auto setting in SNS is WAY lower than the Auto setting on the SGS
the SGS the colour is still vibrant, in the SNS is dull, i actually have to bump it a notch to get the same effect i get on the SGS, even though when they are set on auto, they are both set to aprox just like 25%
Everything wrong about the Galaxy S can be blamed on their RapeWiz interface.
Well sadly I can't agree here... When I ran my Vibrant with a stock Froyo leak with bloat removed and themed to look like stock Nexus S... Then I added in one of Eugene_373's kernels... My battery was over 24 hours every day... Nexus S is great but that Vibrant battery I got was just astounding.

Have you even used TouchWiz before insulting it? I gotta say, TouchWiz was pretty damn good. ADW Launcher or LauncherPro + TouchWiz was a pretty good mix.
- The Power Widget on Notification Bar was a great move by Samsung. Where is it now? Incorporated in CyanogenMod
- Video Codecs.. self explanatory
- Slide to call, text in contacts
.. and other stuff
The biggest problem was SGS' RFS filesystem and Samsung's ability to maintain these devices to the latest OS.
P.S. can we stop abbreviating the Nexus S as "SNS" and just NS? Thanks. We dont call the Nexus One... GN1 or HN1, its just N1.
SNS just sounds too much like Social Network Settings (adding FB to accounts & sync)

also the best thing in touchwiz is..the slide to call and text and..just that lol the power control on notification bar i think is a waste w/ CM7 we have editable power control and honestly i think i speak for everyone that the first thing allllll samsung owners do when they get there phones is remove rapetwiz...
Every time I see "SNS" I think Super Nintendo System.....which is probably not what the OP is going for there....
So another vote to just have it as NS.
Nexus S battery life is awesome
After using Nexus S for about 2 weeks, I found the battery life is awesome
At least according to my usage pattern (!).
While I am writing this post, the battery usage stated:
1 day 15 hours 26 minutes (Roughly 39+ hours)
Display 29%
Cell standby 15%
Dialer 13%
Sygic Aura 9%
Dolphin Browser Mini 9%
Android System 7%
Phone idle 6%
Android OS 5%
XDA 3%
Facebook 2%
Wi-Fi 2%

Plus camera (made couple of photos today), Jorte, and Market. Strange that those were not recorded on the usage stats.
And the battery level is still 15%. This could easily add couple more hours with few web browsing sessions (engadget, androidcentral, giz, etc.).
That was on battery only, never charged in between.
Of course it's vary a lot from day to day, but 30 hours is easily achievable with more web browsing / Facebook (as today I used Sygic Aura navigation quite some times! Few very short phone calls and several SMS).
And yes, I :
- I don't use always sync (only background sync)
- I don't sync email (I am not email freak, most communication will be done via Facebook anyway)
- I don't activate bluetooth
- I don't activate GPS (unless I use navigation)
- I sync weather every 8 hours
- I don't sync calendar automatically
- I don't sync contact automatically
- I use lowest brightness setting 1% via Widgetsoid (which you cannot achieve via normal Settings)
- I use pure black wallpaper (hey!)
- I use LauncerPro plus with 6 homescreens
- I have couple of home screen widgets (2 Folder organizer, Widgetsoid, Audio Manager Pro, simiClock, Beautiful Widget Weather 1x1, LP Pro Text, Pure Calendar Widget)
- I use WhatsApp
Love this!

I used TouchWiz on my Epic for a few months before I decided to mod it and I can say that I absolutely, positively, without a doubt hate it. The lockscreen sucks, I could care less about having power control in the drop down as I've always had power controls on my left of middle homescreen and I always go to that first, including video codecs is nice but its a samsung inclusion not touchwiz and I would much, much rather be using VLC than anything else. There is not a single thing in TouchWiz that I liked. It looked horrible, it was clunky and it was just bloatware.
Now, I'm also not a fan of SenseUI but I like it a whole hell of a lot better than TouchWiz. If I had to use one (meaning I could not modify with a 3rd party launcher and no Vanilla) I would use SenseUI any day. The lockscreen looks good and it is responsive (I know a lot of people who experienced loss of touch sensitivity for periods of time) and its pretty intuitive. I would rather every manufacturer ship phones with the stock launcher and allow people to choose to download the specific UIs but that'll never happen, until then I'm hooked on vanilla.
Oh also, not to mention that TouchWiz would disable features after certain battery thresholds and that battery full popup. Both of which are just silly. If I want to take pictures on my phone after 15% I'm the one who paid for it and its bulls*** that my phone can turn it off.
On the topic of battery life, I can honestly say that my Nexus S gets battery life on par with my Epic. Now there are a few qualifying statements I have to make here: I was using an extremely light ROM specifically for battery life on the Epic and with it I could get up to 28 hours with moderate usage. I only tested that once because I charge my phone at night and there is no reason not to just charge it every night. On my Nexus S I am overclocked to 1.5GHz and I still get a full days usage with heavy usage (off charger at 7:30 and back on around 11 and I'm never below 30%)
Yeah the concept of TouchWiz is really good. But with Samsung not maintaining their current phones with updates, it is just not worth it.
The Power Widgets concept was good, it all started from TouchWiz. It was a great move by CM to make it modifiable to add/remove widgets.
The lock screen was terrible. The best lock screen out of the 4 Galaxy S was the Fascinate with the puzzle lock. Definitely prefer the stock experience lock screen.
And as far as removing "rapewiz," honestly... even though developers have said TouchWiz is removed. It really isn't. The ROMs that we're being made were based on ROMs off TouchWiz. A experience on the Galaxy S without TouchWiz wouldn't have the video codecs and all those other things. Sure you removed the launcher and those other stuff, but it is still running TouchWiz. The closest to non-TouchWiz on the Galaxy S phones are the CM6.1 beta, which is now closed because they're working on CM7 and nightlies aren't even available for the SGS. This is what justified it for me to move to the Nexus S from a Vibrant.
As far as battery, I'd say Nexus S is definitely better in battery life. The Vibrant was limited on kernels, it was forced to use stock and only stock because there wasn't a open source. There was a open sourced kernel for the I9000 but I9000 kernel ported to the Vibrant caused really awful battery life (at least for me).
The biggest thing that I miss from TouchWiz are without a doubt the video codecs. Hopefully Google will incorporate these video codecs into AOSP someday (not sure how that would go about with all the licensing and fees).

Its just a pretty gimmick and I'm a fan of gimmicks lol. I do like the vanilla pattern lock screen.
Hello, I've been using custom Touchwiz ROM (Goldeneye for Telus) and it occasionally stutters at various points such as opening app or folder, etc. It's very minor but considering that it's a new phone, I was a little disappointed. Then I tried the Google Edition and it is seriously lacking on features. It's snappier but there's no toggles for notification, can't quickly clear out opened apps, can't create folders in app drawer (I like to organize them), camera isn't as good as the Touchwiz due to features - I also like it that I can record a video by clicking the button on screen, and a few minor details that I can't remember now.
So is there any benefit of using Google Rom over custom Touchwiz rom other than it being snappier? Does anyone prefer Google Rom? MOD EDIT: NO BEST ROM QUESTIONS
Every user is different. So it's best to try different ones and see which you like best.
I prefer the Google ROMS (stock android) because it has no bloat, pretty fast and snappy, and looks premium, clean, and (IMO) amazing. I don't normally use TW ROMS mainly because of the looks and bloat. For example, I'm not a fan of the toggles in the notification bar, so I got stock android and had a clean and efficient notification bar. Many of the "S" features I never used , so I thought I might as well get rid of them.
Camera is something I would actually use TW for, but since I don't take many photos it didn't seem necessary (for me at least).
As for creating folders and stuff, use a custom launcher, they'll have more features than the stock launchers on both.
However this all does come down to preference, if you value the features, stick with TW, if you value a premium look and feel, use stock Android ROMS. Best part is that you can switch between both anytime you like, just make backups. (I switched every 15 days on my S3 so I got the best of both). Since Modaco Switch will be coming to the S4 (i337 also I hope), it will be even easier to switch between the two, and enjoy both types of ROMS.

Ya, I just tried the Google Edition rom today and.. It feels that I have to try very hard to like the rom. Do people usually use a different launcher to make it somewhat more user friendly? I mean... I like stock feeling and all.. But it's seriously lacking on some features.

Mmm. I'm interested in using a launcher but I have no idea what they do lol. I'm very new, coming from an iPhone, so I still have to adapt to Android - It's a great switch! Loving the larger screen, removable battery and expendable memory! Do you have any suggestion about which launcher provides the most features? Are they generally super stable and do they consume more battery than the default settings? Thanks!
Try apex or nova launcher. Both let you do folders in the app drawer.
A aosp ROM like CyanogenMod gets rid of the bloat and make the phone faster but still retain notification toggles.
I put cm on my s4 the day I got it. Its very fast and smooth.

Yeah, I considered AOSP roms too. However, there isn't a stable 4.3 CM or AOKP yet and I would like to switch to the newest possible OS since I have to set up every again. I also read something regarding AOSP camera being sub par comparaing to touchwiz or GE firmware - Not sure if it's all just a myth..
I'll most definitely checkout these launchers. Seems interesting. Thanks.
Nova Launcher is what I use, tons of customizations, very stable, and not really any different battery consumption. You should try all the popular launchers and see what you like. For some cool 3D ones check out Next Launcher, and for other ones apex, Holo, and ADW are popular. Atom launcher is a cool one too. Try all of them and see which one you'll like, they all are unique ;D

Titanium Back up takes care of that. Going to the S3 to the S4 took only a little but of setup. It backups all of your apps and their data across OS upgrades.

I have problems getting notifications to work properly with some apps when I restore data also, so I usually just restore the apps (except for games and stuff where I don't want to lose progress and don't care about notifications anyway).
As for whether I like stock Android better or not the answer is a definitive yes. When I got my S4 I used it as is only until I could get back to my computer and flash a custom recovery and a new ROM (CM 10.2 at the moment). Yeah, there are some features that you lose, but for me they are gimmicky and unnecessary (I emphasize me because I recognize that some people really do like the TW stuff and like I always say: good for you, that's what Android is ultimately all about). Stock Android, on the other hand, looks good, is functional, is fast, and works the way I want/expect it to.
I also happen to think that TW is butt ugly, but that's purely subjective.
I haven't tried one of the GE ROMs yet but CyanogenMod gets close enough with extra features that I like (do not disturb, anyone?) so that's what I tend to gravitate towards. There is nothing wrong with going either way, of course, and ultimately it boils down to what you want from your phone. Again, that to me is a big part of what makes Android so damn appealing (and why locked bootloaders and anti-tweaking efforts piss me off).
It is stable, but if you like bland, and lack of features, then it would be the os to use...

Hah, no bias here at all.
The Google "Experience"
Having tried both a custom TW rom and a GE rom, I have to give the TW roms the win.
This is why:
1) The dialer is pretty bad, I'm not a fan of deciphering hieroglyphics to determine how to navigate the dialer. Also the contacts app UI is awful.
2) The GE launcher lacks features offered in free editions of 3rd party launchers.
3) The stock email program and widgets are not as good or as functional as the Samsung email program and S Planner.
4) I actually like being able to turn on/off wi-fi and BT without having to navigate menus and/or install space and memory hogging widgets.
5) Multi-window is pretty awesome.
6) The GE/CM ROMS have some pretty showstopping bugs with BT, microphone issues during calls, random reboots, etc.
As someone already mentioned earlier about its personal preference. I myself tried to hard to like GE rom, but couldn't because of lots of things that I use on TW is missing. The only thing I ever missed was photosphere feature, and that issue got solved by installing GE camera app. Regarding smoothness, it's not bad at all, and this is coming from a guy who has seen worst from froyo times to super good with JB. Also, you can disable lots of bloat even if you are not rooted. But of course people who come here are not the one who likes to do things without rooting their device and once you root, you can disable all the bloat tou want. But until and unless you try for yourself, it's hard to know what you'll miss from either of the rom.

You can drag down the notification bar with two fingers and long press on wifi and bluetooth to toggle them on/off.
I come from two years of using a nexus devices. I got this phone for free, otherwise I would still be using the galaxy nexus. I miss the easy flashing, fastboot etc. This phone will last me till next fall and at that time, I'll move to the nexus 6
Needless to say, I use a bone stock ge Rom with nova launcher.

I would prefer to use the GE ROM over Touchwiz but for whatever reason I can't find a single browser that doesn't stutter horribly as compared to aosp ROMs. For that reason alone I am using CM 10.2.

You've probably tried these popular choices.. But I use Dolphin browser and its performance is pretty close to stock AOSP browser with some nice added features. I've also tried Firefox and it's pretty damn close! But either way, try the beta versions of the two and see if you like them. .

I'd like to ask what would be the state of each of the next features on Note 4 (any of its models) when moving to an AOSP based rom (like CM, Omni, PA, ...) :
1. MHL/HDMI
2. Screen recording.
3. S-Pen
4. Calls recording
5. hovering with the fingers.
6. touching with gloves
7. sensors
8. IR
9. Any TW app (camera, keyboard, etc...)
By state, I mean, how well would it function, if at all.
For the S-Pen, of course some features won't be available, but maybe it could function in its basic way.
Also, I'd like to ask (as I don't really own the device) : what would you miss the most in case you moved from stock-Samsung rom to AOSP-based rom?
Any feature I didn't mention ?
Well coming from the Note 2 and Note 3 that had AOSP roms, no.
None of the special TouchWiz features will work once you're on pure Android.
---------- Post added at 09:54 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:53 AM ----------
Basic things like the screen recording, call recording, ir blaster and sensors will will work. Mostly, s pen features will all be gone. You won't have a need to use it once on AOSP.
AOSP experience from Note 3.
Recently coming from the Note 3 running CM 11 Nightlies and other more customizable AOSP rom. Ive noticed that the S Pen works at its most basic capacity. That being said, there was no cursor like there is on TW and the option to add one adds the traditional pc mouse cursor with is way too big for my taste. Features like screen recording were built in to some or could be with Xposed. Call recording also came built in as well or could be added as well. Hdmi ive never tried although chrome cast would work better. Touch sensitivity was in one of the AOSP roms ive used so its duable depending on what dev makes the rom with contributing features in mind. IR was a no go since i dont really use the feature although i do see it usability to others so it would be a keen addition. I currently own the T-Mobile Note 4 and got it on day one and i CANNOT wait to get my hands on a note 4 rom already but, gotta be patiant. I know that was all out of place but, hopefully you understood and it helped!!
IR Worked fine on CyanogenMod on my Note 3.
Coming from Samsung and Sony where there was a big difference are all Roms basically the same base on the X Style. Are there differences that I should be aware of?
Thanks
Edit Title should say AOSP!

I'd say the only reason to go cutom ROM on this phone would be customization. The stock ROM is pretty reliable, fast, and easy on the battery. Especially if you start tuning up the custom kernels how you like them.
Stock doesn't feel like it's dragging a frickin boat anchor or god awful at memory management like on a Samsung. This phone doesn't have an ugly, laggy vendor skin. With MM (and root) you can use RRO layers to theme it - no custom ROM required. I've run custom ROMs for years because...Samsung. I'm kind of tired of flaky bluetooth, FCs, and stuff that just doesn't quite work right but is better than Touchwiz.
The only thing I'd really like to have that custom ROMs make available would be double tap status bar to sleep, status bar brightness slider, and notification led; most everything else honestly goes in the stuff I don't use / forget about category (well...slim recents would be nice too). You could tackle most of that with XPosed too, but that brings its own baggage. I've tried out a few of the custom ROM offerings, and for now I keep going back to stock. They're good, but not good enough for me to give up that stock stability when stock is so close to pure AOSP. We have Multirom too, so that makes test driving multiple ROMs really easy.
As for AOSP vs. CM, I'm pretty sure all the custom ROMs you'll find here have a CM base. You can find Broken for this phone too, and it usually uses an AOSP-CAF base. I haven't actually checked Broken out yet.

Thanks for the reply... I think I'm more concerned about flashing the wrong kernel.
For example I'm used to say flashing a Stock kernel on my Z2 Sony ROM, I could opt for CM Rom and know I need CM kernel. This difference seem so much more blurred here on the Moto X Style.
Also for example we have BlissPure, PureBliss, FrakenClark and Stock optimised [@VadimTk] there doesn't seem to be an easy way of knowing which ROMs they can be flashed on.
I'm new to Moto's so learning fast!
Frankenclark and vadim's are stock.
Bliss is for cm base.
The frankenclark dev dirtyhank has been bringing some great features lately, and hashbang has been picking them up and baking them into his aicp builds too.

I've tried that with Nova, but you have to double tap blank space on a screen, not an app or widget. I actually have swipe up mapped to screen off with Nova because that seems to work anywhere. I agree it's a pretty good substitute.
I think I could get everything I want/need with stock and xposed. I'll maybe root this weekend and see how I on with rooted stock mm...

Coming from Samsung to Motorola my only complaint really about stock is missing features that I just wouldn't expect to be missing. The two that stick out most for me is the lack of a number row on the stock keyboard and a lack of an interface for a clipboard for copy and paste. Obviously a lot of these things can be supplemented with apps and mods but that kinda defeats the purpose of having a stock experience.
Edit: Oh and no option for battery percent in the status bar but I found a trick to enable that without any modifications.

Obviously a lot of these things can be supplemented with apps and mods but that kinda defeats the purpose of having a stock experience.
Edit: Oh and no option for battery percent in the status bar but I found a trick to enable that without any modifications.

Yeah I found the battery % trick/app early....
Data/network indicators, centre clock. I use google KB, so have the numbers.
Not sure what you mean by no copy/paste clipboard?

Y'all two care to share your little trick? I haven't come across center clock on Moto Stock without using Xposed.

Sorry, xposed IS needed for centre clock AFAIK...
I personally hate CM. Ever since my first Android phone I've always avoided it. I tried BlissROM and wasn't happy with it. I haven't used an AOSP ROM for any phone since my MyTouch4G. The ROM I'm currently using is TruePureX, and it's been going great. It's stock, but without bloat and a few added features. Then I add Xposed and GravityBox and it's perfect.

On my Samsung Galaxy S5 there was a clipboard where I could manage previously cut and copied content, not just the last item.

The trick allows you to enable the battery percentage as well as a few other things and can be found here.
EDIT: So, given that no Oreo/Pie ROM can match the TouchWiz features below, serious question: Why in the world does everyone prefer vanilla Android? I don't want to have to find 10 apps with extra steps just to replace system-level features of a skinned ROM. So vanilla Android honestly makes no sense to me.

I'm the rare N7 TW holdout. I LIKE TouchWiz, particularly Note 7 ports, where I guess they called it Samsung Experience.
But I can't stay on Marshmallow forever.
For Oreo/Pie/10 ROMs, what ROM has the below features? Or what's the easiest way to replace them?
Call recording built into the Dialer/In-Call UI
Scroll Capture (vertically scrolling screenshots)
SNote-type note app (seriously, the font choices, point size, text frames, etc. make it tough to beat)
RELIABLE SIM (since all newer N4 ROMs seem to have SIM death)
Robust photo editing built into the Gallery
ETA: The clipboard.
Probably more, but if someone knows how to replace those as close to system level as possible, I'd probably go that route. Thank you for any feedback!
The best replacement for snote seems to be squid, but some things there cost $.
FYI I am also on the same boat, but I'll be holding out on marshmallow for since time longer.

I'm also partial to TW but have been using some open source pie roms lately and for the most part I don't miss much about TouchWiz. The spen is the biggest cost for me personally. I had never tried squid before but I just installed it and my initial impression is favorable to some others I've tried. Spen commander works well for some people and I like Evernote as well but so far nothing they all lack the integration and intuition of the stock spen features and due to the proprietary nature of it there's a chance that won't get much better.
Due to the extra steps required I haven't even been using the spen with those roms since the convenience of it just isn't the same. Also, scroll capture fits in the same boat. There are apps to replace that function but it's certainly not as convenient as just using the spen.
Everything else, from my point of view, works well. The camera does fail every once in awhile. It's not often but often enough to be aggravating depending on your usage.
Looking through most of those rom threads you'll see plenty of people claiming that those roms are as reliable as stock or that all/most stock functions can be replaced but that's just not been my experience. However, there are plenty of things that I do like about the newer OS's and the reliability gap isn't as big as I assumed it was going to be. They're certainly prettier than 6.0.1.

All great to know.
Funny to hear YOU say it, though. I'm feeling a bit starstruck to see your reply. You're one of the reasons I've stuck with TW! Flashpoint's nonnegotiable for every TW ROM. Thank you for your great work!
