It is installed in the system partition and is what you define as 'normal root'.

Hey,
I'm trying to make Secure Settings work but I think the app is not compatible with systemless root (if this is not true, tell me please). I went with systemless root at first because it was the latest and what everyone was talking about but, tbf, Android Pay is not even available where I live so I see no point on staying with systemless.
I'm on Cataclysm and ElementalX. What's the best way to go from systemless root to system root?
Thanks
Sorry for reviving an old post - but same here. I flashed the latest SuperSU zip without knowing it was systemless.
I believe you can unroot usign SuperSU and then flash an earlier version of the SuperSU zip that works with Marshmallow.
So I'm following the guide on rooting, unlocking, etc and confused about systemless root and traditional. I was going to do systemless to keep android pay alive and it seems that is the future. However, I'm at the point of installing TWRP. But the guide mentioned "TWRP isn't able t persist without modifying system, so you'll lose it after booting into Android, you'll need to flash/boot it to access it again". What does this exactly mean? I read it as that after I reboot my phone after doing something in TWRP, than TWRP becomes non existent. And I'd have to flash it every time I wanted to get into TWRP. Is this correct? Seems not very smart because if something happens on my phone, I'd like to be able to boot right into my TWRP recovery to restore a stable version.
I don't know why it says that but I allow TWRP to make system modifications and I have systemless root with AP working.
You definitely don't want to let TWRP install it's version of SuperSU though. When it gives you the option select "Do not install".
I would like to share my experience on flashing systemless root with TWRP on my Nexus 9:
1. Reboot to bootloader and perform fastboot boot TWRP.img (TWRP.img is the filename of TWRP IMG file). Yes, TWRP is temporary and won't keep after reboot)
2. If TWRP prompts you to decrypt /data partition, simply skip that
3. Don't allow /system modifications
4. Use adb sideload to install systemless SuperSU
5. Directly reboot to system after installation. The device may reboot multiple times, just let it finish.
SuperSU should now appear in the app tray. This method works well for me.
Much info on systemless root here

I feel like I can not ever find systemless root properly.
I recently reflashed the stock march security update factory image. I then reinstalled TWRP 3.0 and then flashed "BETA-SuperSU-v2.68-20160228150503.zip" found int eh thread below
http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/2014-09-02-supersu-v2-05-t2868133
however when i booted, I wasnt systemless I was full root with the SU app and everything. i was able to unroot and now android pay works.
i would like to install SYSTMLESS ROOT what ever the latest is so that i can remove the XBIN folder and use the CHMOD trick to get androidpay working but I just cant seem to find the actual systemless root.
i end up digging around like 3 or 4 different SU threads and its frustrating lol.
is the BETA-SuperSU-v2.68-20160228150503.zip the systemless version?
thanks!
2.68 is the one I flashed from TWRP,, but before I applied the zip I accessed the Terminal in TWRP and typed
echo "SYSTEMLESS=true" > /data/.supersu
Then I flashed the supersu.zip. Rebooted to system then used Root Explorer to change the permissions of /su/bin to 751. Removed the xbin_bind folder. Restarted and it was systemless root.
I flashed purenexus rom .previously I was using truepure rom. I did clean install twice . wiped everything except internal storage and then installed purenexus rom and dynamic gapps then wiped cache and dalvik . everything went smooth but now device isn't rooted any more . I installed super su and it said root not detected
Can you please guide me how to root again . which root method is best ? And how to do it ?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

You'd be good to go with Magisk (get the v12 and flash the zip in TWRP)
Now days ROMs don't come pre-rooted as often as concern for system modification and apps that block use on rooted phones.
Magisk has the ability to do root without modifying the system partition (so called systemless root) also has option to quickly hide root
If you don't care about that you can follow the guidelines suggested above by the other answer and you'll find SuperSU systemless root, and you're good to go.
Quick note, if superSU fails (bootloops) read the TWRP log while you installed SuperSU and try to find in which mode did it got installed. This is because older versions of SuperSU failed to detect Moto Clark as systemless and went for system root , which caused bootloop. There are instructions on SuperSU thread on how to force systemless root method
I have RoccateX rom installed and I want superSu rom because it works better with some apps but I don't know how to change the root. Also magisk has an option to hide root, can that be done by SuperSU?
