Anyone Have any word on a custom recovery option on the galaxy s7 ( SNAPDRAGON)? Sorry if this has been asked before.
Nothing I seen. I've been trying to get TWRP working on the Snapdragon. But just been trying to figure out the differences between the Snapdragon and Exynos CPUs for it.
The difference is the bootloader status. Snapdragon is locked, so you can only flash officially signed software. Exynos is unlocked, so you can flash anything
Never gonna happen. Use FlashFire to flash zips

I recently purchased a new samsung s4 i9505 and it came pre installed with the knox bootloader. i have previosuly owned a samsung device when knox did not exist and rom flashing was good fun.
i understand if i decide to flash roms , then knox will void my warranty.
apart from that is thier any other concerns which i should make note off should i go down the route of flashing custom roms? also, is it still worth it to flash custom roms for improved performance? or has samsung's own firmware become good enough?
You won't receive any more OTA updates from Samsung. Not that there are any for the S4 anymore..
I believe custom roms still offer better performance than touchwiz.

Flashing roms via ODIN don't void your warranty. Flashing custom recovery, yes.

thanks for the reply.
My phone came out of the box with 4.4.2 pre installed. I have had a notification for OTA update which i believe would likely be 5.0 lollipop. However, i thought i would withold until i can understand any advanatages on my current firmware.
i seem to be bothered by the slight lag and stutter on my current os, i hope that the world of flashing roms would resolve this but there seems to be a large variety of roms available, which would you recommend, although i plan on randomly selecting a few.

Thanks for the headsup, would i still be able to flash a custom kernel without voiding warranty? or is that out the question due to be on a locked bootloader?
If you have a locked bootloader you either have an AT&T or Verizon S4. The locked bootloader makes root virtually impossible, so you wouldn't be flashing much of anything. There are ways to work around the bootloader in the AT&T and Verizon S4 forums.
With that out the way, a custom kernel will trip Knox as the custom kernel changes SEAndroid from Enforcing to Permissive.

I have a uk version of the samsung s4 so i am asuming that i dont have a locked bootloader. is thier any way of checking to be sure that i dont have a locked bootloader?
Sure. Check Download Mode. As long as you don't have either of the following model numbers you should be good to go: SGH-I337, SCH-I545.

ive entered download mode but thier does not seem to be any mention of the bootloader version?.
Bootloader version is irrelevant. Unless you have one of the two devices mentioned in my previous post, your bootloader is unlocked. Going into Download Mode will give you the model number of your S4.

thanks for the clarifying. So in summary i can flash roms and kernels freely without issues , regardless of my phone coming with the knox bootloader from factory on 4.4.2.
It definetly is not linked with either network AT&T or Verizon
So the only issue i will face is the chance of tripping knox.
Knox is the only thing you have to deal with. So flash away.
I've rooted every phone I've ever gotten, mainly for adblockers.
I'm aware Samsung has e-fuses for knox in the past and I had no use for it. However, I'm new to s7 and not sure about private mode or any other new knox feature since note4.
Is there a way to root stock so I can install adblockers but not break knox or other features? What all will break exactly?
Furthermore, is it just root at this time or recoveries too? I don't even want to flash anything, just get root.
I have the master USA race T-Mobile version. I hear so far that it's only the Int'l models that have recoveries atm
Bump?
Anything that modifies the kernel will cause the efuse to break including rooting and recoveries because of dm verify.
currently snapdragon S7E can not be rooted effectively because the bootloader is locked and most developers will not touch them for now. Maybe in the future.
Is there any progress in finding the solution to open the bootloader for these units?
Or is this just a lost cause and the bootloader for these units will always be locked.
No TWRP or ROMS to load to get rid of TW. Sad.

It's a lost cause, the bootloaders for snapdragon will remain locked forever.
It's not like most other bootloaders which are all rootable with proper software.
The snapdragon bootloaders are infused in the phone's hardware.
Next time when you purchase a Samsung phone be sure it has the Xynos cpu
chip and rooting will be a breeze. (took me a full minute to root)
All Samsung Galaxy phones which have the Xynos chip are not
only easily rootable but they all come factory sim unlocked.
Good luck, have a great day!
Thanks for the response. Very Sorry, like most of us, that this is a done deal!
Ok, could I flash custom ROMs of g950f in a unlocked g950u? I just want to know the possibilities of the unlocked g950u

There's 2 opinions here, 1 being that an exynos firmware won't work on snapdragon device, which I personally believe is true but people have also told me there's nothing saying that you can't, but no one even though telling me that it can be done has actually shown me it being some successfully. I stick with my belief that it won't work.

I understood that, it could be possible but nobody tried before, the problem isn't the firmware, the phone just need a custom kernel that could interpret the exynos instructions and the snapdragon anatomy. In the note 5 the variant change can be possible but the note 5 don't have a snapdragon variant
I did my question 'cause there isn't many custom ROMs for the g950u variant
Thank you for the reply

Snapdragon bootloader is locked bar the Chinese version, so until they somehow do that, you won't see custom roms or kernels
They're different processors. It won't work.
You can flash W or U1 fw on a U and U on a W or U1. All American models are the same hardware so they're interchangeable.

That's not true. They are both arm64 v8 processors, meaning they will both execute arm64 machine instructions. It's like Intel and amd, they both implement x86_64. You don't need a different version of Windows for Intel vs amd, nor do you have to download different programs for one vs the other.
Even kernels do not have to be different. There is no reason that support for any hardware differentiation between the two models (of which there are few outside the soc itself) could not be part of the same kernel. PC Linux servers boot on tens of millions of machines of probably millions of unique hardware configurations using the same kernel, and since they are both running touchwiz the HAL (the primary differentiator between Android and traditional linux) will be identical
Your primary limitations with this is the locked bootloader, and the fact that apparently custom rom devs do things that require specific kernels. Since you can't boot a custom kernel, it may prove difficult. I havent tried so I can't say for sure
Hahaha right. Go ahead and listen to this guy. Flash F firmware and let us know how it goes.
pretty much gave up a long while ago but now I'm stuck with this phone since I'm not able to find another one I could flash a custom OS in aside from some xiaomi ones, and those are also a pain to deal with when it comes to modding stuff.
Saw some posts around the internet saying it was possible to root this phone and something about reverting to Nougat but I'm confused as hell. So if there's any actual guide to root this phone that works I'd appreciate the help
Seeing as it's a Snapdragon device, most likely not. Samsung devices with Qualcomm SoCs are typically not bootloader unlockable, and unlocking the bootloader is required for rooting or flashing custom software.
I see.. well that's disappointing
seems all the versions being sold here are the american ones
