One detail bothers me a lot, namely if I press the upper button while in a call the line is dropped.
So, I cannot make sure that the screen is permanently off while in a call.
(I'm not so concerned about battery life, but sometimes the ear can make unwanted keypresses)
That's not the case with other phones.
Any idea how to be in a call with screen totally off?
My Zenfone turns the screen off if I put it on my ear while in a call and then turns on again when I remove it from my ear. Maybe you proximity sensor is broken, or you turned some option on/off.

Proximity sensor works, but it is not what I need...
Just want to be able to turn off screen completely like on Nexus or Oneplus devices

There is an option to end a call with the power button. Disable that and your problem is gone.

Been looking for this option, to turn it off, but cannot find it.
Where is it?
Settings - Acessibility - Power Button ends Call
Make sure your screen protector has a hole for the prox sensor. Oterwise the screen will shut off during call an wont come back without hitting power button.

has anybody ever experienced this before?
while talking to the phone, your ear is pressed against the screen hence accidentally touching the screen with your ear and doing unwanted tasks
i have tried lowering light timer and;
pressing the on/off button once to turn off the screen
i find this a big problem for me, its an inconvinience, anybody has got any solutions for this?
thanks
use xperia tweak (use search function)
There is an option to urn screen off during calls
im using xperia tweak 2.0
all i see is
"disable screen turning off during calls" wouldnt this be the opposite of what u want?
I keep my screen on during calls and my cheek does not press any buttons, even when touching. Maybe your cheek bone or ear is too pointy?
lol actually its the clock button at the windows bar is being pressed on and it changed itself to analog/digital
Eh?
Standard behaviour is to switch the screen off during a call. So unless you changed it, why is your screen on? I wish this worked like y iphone and siwtched as you put it to your head, then screen goes back on when you pull it away during a call.
Same for me, my screen has never gone off while calling. Same by enabling and disabling the feature in Xperia Tweak.
I read somwhere that R2 changed that behaviour in opposition to R1..

agreed, even the nokia 5800 comes with the proximity sensor feature...
Just made a hard reset because of lots of beta software testing, I reinstalled only my very needed software, and the screen turns off like expected during the calls. I am in R2.

but thats all i have bene doing now...i was hoping for an app to fix this
I keep my Nexus4 in my jean pocket with the screen facing inward and I am having the incoming call screen problem causing some un-intended actions.
While the mobile is in pocket and a call comes, I sometimes skip it by using the volume rocker to silence it and leave it in pocket. But when I take it out after sometime, I would be seeing all sorts of key events registered on the screen (due to screen on and in contact with my pocket) causing random opening of apps and quick settings.
Ideal solution would be to keep the screen off when incoming call comes while the phone is still in pocket and turn the screen on only when the phone is pulled from the pocket (Using Proximity sensor). I searched and could not find any app which would do this for me. Any other suggestions to prevent the random touches from happening?
I'm running CM10.1 on my N4

I would try possibly SmartCover or Proximity Screen On.
You could just hit the power button after you hit the volume rocker.

I would want the screen to be on/off based on proximity only during incoming call. Other times I prefer turning it on/off with power button

As rysup mentioned, now instead of silencing with volume keys, I use the power key to turn off and silence while in pocket. That way the screen is turned off and no accidental touch/swipes. I take it out of the pocket and use the power key to turn on the screen again. Not the best way but it works for now.
PS: You should have power key to reject calls in accessibility settings disabled. Otherwise pressing power key will reject the call instead of silencing.
Whenever I'm talking on the phone and holding the phone with my shoulder and face, no hands, my cheek presses buttons on the dialer, opens apps, changes my calendar, date and time, all kind of annoying things. My only work around is to hit the power button the turn the screen off, which is very inefficient. Is there any other way around this, some setting or something? I've never had this problem on any other phone. Thank for the help.
Ditto

Proximity sensor issue? Or that it isn't covered enough when it rests between your shoulder and face. Is it the same when you hold the phone normally when on a call?

Check to see if your screen protector is partially covering your proximity sensor.. or your case or something else..
Hey, do any of you have a problem with the power button? More specifically, when I try to wake the phone, instead of using the knock knock feature, u sometime press the power button. What happens is, the screen turns on, and then immediately after 1-2 sec turns off again. It seems that I only can turn the screen on by using knock knock

It does that when the proximity (right next to the front speaker on the top front, to the left) is covered, so it doesn't turn on in your pocket. It's a safety feature. So it has to be completly clear before you press the power button.
A bad screenprotector can cause it to happen.

Yay, proximity sensors just sometimes **** up. It used to do on my old phone. I thought they had fixed that long time ago though, hence I didn't mention that possibility.
Good you fixed it!

Same thing happens to my phone and it bugs the sh*t out of me. There better be a fix soon for this.
It's just due to the proximity sensor. Nothing to be worried about.
So how does the proximity sensor error work exactly? if it detects low light (like being in a pocket) it won't let you unlock? Wouldn't that mess up unlocking in the dark?

It's a light detector AND proximity sensor.
Uses the light for the screen light (auto brightness)
The proximity sensor checks if there is something covering the screen. (like being in your pocket)
I'm having a problem where the screen doesn't turn back on when I pull the phone away from my ear during a phone call. Mostly, I am trying to hang up on a phone call but the screen won't turn on unless I hit the power button. The proximity sensor works because if I wave my hand over the screen, the notifications pop up. Anyone else having this issue? Thanks in advance.
There's 3 of them two on the bottom and another top left which is used for calls could be that one that's defective
Compressed air.

Same here.
Top left sensor works. Just leaves the phone dark.
Same here as well, but only on longer calls
