I want to know about bricking a device, kind of... - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Ok so I'm a noob. I've been using Android for about 2 and a 1/2 years and I'm interested in rooting my phone.
I want to root my s7 edge. I understand that you can't really root the snapdragon 820 version (I have at&t if that matters). The reason I want to root is because I hate TouchWiz and I love stock Android. I want all the latest updates and so on. So basically I want to have an s7 edge with Nexus stock Android. Can you delete Android entirely from the phone and reinstall it in Nexus form. I'm sorry please don't judge and I know that's a stupid question. If there is now a way to rooton the s7 edge snapdragon 820 at&t please let me know. Sorry this is so long.

edit: and btw I sincerely doubt you can put a nexus rom onto your sd820 s7 edge. The bootloader isn't even unlocked and most likely never will be.

Tell me that's not true, can I really not root my phone now that I'm on 4.4.4? I've been away from the customizing scene for a while.

Drew is correct. No root on 4.4.4. Most devs abandoned ship for greener pastures. Either deal with it or sell it and get another rootable device.

Well I guess it does force my hand a bit. I've been debating upgrading to the Note 4 or going to the Nexus 6, was just hoping to get some more millage out of my Note 3. Don't have the $700(ish) for a new phone right now.

Definitely NO root on Note 4 unless you buy the developer version directly from Samsung.
Today's news just keeps getting worse and worse. Found out that as of now, Verizon will only be selling the 32gb version of the Nexus as well.

By you saying earlier that you dont have the $700 to purchase a new one, I take it you are not using an upgrade. If that is the case you can buy the 64GB Nexus from Google or somewhere else and use it on Verizon. They all have the same hardware and all are able to be used on any carrier out of the box.

He is 100% right. I boycotted the S6/Note 5 because of the Exynos chip. I have already pre ordered my S7 and it should be here in a day or so. (i might return it for the edge but that wont hinder development since they are basically the same device)
I know of at least one other dev who is getting a S7 as well, GarwynnXDA who helped me get CM 11 going on the S5 so a bright future should be in store for this device

You can't root the AT&T Galaxy S7 Edge - you can't root any AT&T android phones from what I understand.
They have locked the bootloader - Haven't been able to root for a few generations now.
Your best bet is the international variant or a T-Mobile Unlocked variant.

The locked bootloader has definitely slowed down development of rooting methods but so far it's still been possible. I've had an S3, S4, S5 and S6 and all have been rooted.
Personally I do believe there'll be a root exploit for the S7 Edge but it'll soon be patched.
If so then once you're rooted don't plan on taking any updates the exploit will be patched and that'll be it.
There'll be no custom kernels or TWRP.
FlashFire should work though and with that possibly Xposed with some modding possible.
All of this is purely conjecture of course.
There's a real possibility of no root at all as well.

If there is eventually I'm assuming that yes Samsung Pay will not function.

Yup, from my understanding - if you root at all, EVER - Samsung Pay will be permanently disabled on that device.
Most root options will kill the KNOX chip which is needed for NFC security causing no payment options to work over NFC.

Uh...my AT&T Nexus 6 is rooted. Development has really dropped off, but I wouldn't say it's definitely not going to happen. I really want the S7 Edge, but the lack of the ability to root is making me hold off. I'm a huge impulse buyer and this is making me nuts LOL.

I finally broke down and bought it. Im coming from an HTC M8 and have flashed roms on every android I've owned. Didnt want to wait for new Nexus or M10 so I broke down and just bought a phone. I finally think im over the modding stage of phones because they just work like they should now. Finally!

I agree. I've never had an Android phone that wasn't rooted, but I have yet to see a reason to even root the S7. I realize there are hardcore modders out there that just need root, and that's cool and maybe someday (if root is available) I will root this phone as well. I just haven't seen a need for it yet.
For me, the biggest reason to have root on a Samsung phone is their poor track record with providing updates especially on carrier branded phones.
I still carry an AT&T Galaxy Note 2 and have full Android Wear integration because I have root and can install good custom ROMs.

OR MST as it will kill Samsung Pay all together
When I first got my S5 from at&t, I, of course, rooted it as soon as it was possible. It came with that lame ISIS card (that American Express) changed the name for obvious reasons to soft card. It used NFC and I could use it when rooted through an app in xposed to grant access.
This was all done with a locked bootloader. Seems like with each new phone it becomes more and more difficult, but usually find some kind of workaround.
I never tripped KNOX. It's still 0x0.
Regarding KNOX, it's my understanding that there have been some root exploits on previous generation phones that did not trip it. Is that incorrect?
I'm hoping something will come around for the S7 that will leave KNOX intact. I've never really used any NFC payment methods and could definitely live without them, but it does seem to me that this is the generation where Samsung Pay, Android Pay, etc, are really going to come into their own. . . .

It isn't root that trips Knox it's flashing a custom recovery and or custom kernel and since the bootloader is locked down tight I doubt seriously if we have to worry about that.
If there will be a root for the G935A FlashFire doesn't trip Knox and will work if a dev will build a Stockish T/W Rom.
Actually I'd be happy to root just for Xposed so I can use 3minit battery mod and center clock

Agreed. While A small part of me misses CM, I actually don't mind the TouchWiz on the S7. I would be happy staying stock and being able to run a few root apps. Titanium Backup, BBS, etc. . . .
Seems like folks keep tossing in that the phone may never get rooted. . . . Has that really happened with any of the flagships? It seems like most phones do eventually get opened up.

Yes the ATT and Verizon Note5 never had Root and after one of the updates the S6 Edge wasn't rootable either.
We'll see but IF someone does drop root on us don't unroot and take an update they'll patch that exploit ASAP

Same here. After couple years of carrying around Note 2, then Note 4, I don't think I would ever go back to those gigantic phablet ever again. S7e isn't that much of a downsize from the Note so we bought the S7 without hesitation, it's a lot more pocketable and MUCH easier to operate one handed. Loving the S7 so far.

T-Mobile firmware to an Official Samsung

Hey Guys.
So I'm about to get a new S7 Edge from T-mobile tonight.
I understand there are several roms out there for different versions of the device, am I right?
Is there anyway I could get rid of the official T-mobile rom and install instead the official/international Samsung one, something without all the garbage of the carrier and that will be future update directly by Samsung?
Will appreciate any lead
Thanks Guys!
No root. No firmware. No fun for anyone. This is the new korean samsung. All that's missing is a high Hitler, and your set
I'm coming from the Nexus world, so I'm sorry in case I'm mixing between the definitions here.
I case I'm not looking to root, just load another system img on the device, instead of the crappy t-mobile one.
No way to do it right now?
Thanks again man.

No. Even with root, Samsung was never one to allow other firmwares on different models. If they existed, they were outliers and not the norm.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-s7-edge/how-to/best-to-root-how-to-screw-stock-s-t3394517
This is a very good guide to getting a more unbranded feel.
I would add that you can change your screen dpi through ADB (though the stock camera won't be full screen afterwards).
The US S7s are a special breed of S7s relative to the rest of the world, using Qualcomm rather than in-house chips and not having a bootloader unlock solution.
It might be possible to do more debranding (in the sprint S7E forum, they found a debrand function that may or may not work on t-mobile S7s to take off carrier customizations) but, assuming you are using t-mobile, you're better off using the package disabler than risk losing volte/video calls/wifi calling (the only reason to bother with a t-mobile S7 over international).

They are ODIN'ing different versions of the 935F firmware internationally to get Samsung Pay and other apps, but they have a different processor - so you would brick your device if you tried. You might be able to use US AT&T formware, but cannot see any reason to try.
There are also custom ROMs out for the 935F - but you have to be rooted to flash them, which is not possible hereon the 935T yet and my never be the way things are (not) going.
Got you all, thank you guys for the response!
For now, I disabled all Samsung and Tmo useless apps, and installed Google Now Launcher instead of Touch Wize.
Hopefully these steps will do the job for now.
Thanks again!
Nowadays phones don't need root they work very well out of the box. I understand the need for it (custom roms, etc...) but I haven't rooted a personal phone of mine in a while. Just disable what you don't wanna use and enjoy the phone.
