Note 7 Always On Display? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions & Answer

Does Anybody Have Any Clue About The S7 Getting An Update With The New AoD Features Announced With The Note 7?.. I've Heard That Samsung Updated The S7 AoD, But I Haven't Gotten Any Update.. Hope It's Not Carrier Dependent

All I can say is that Samsung has not been known to bring features from a particular device to previous or other devices. So my best guess would be that no, features particular to the Note 7 will not find their way to the S7. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

I think the S7 will get updated eventually, there's no reason it shouldn't.. Plus the Always on Display isn't "particular" to the Note 7.. Its just using an updated version of the app, which now allows 3rd party apps to be displayed. The S7 is definitely capable, because it's using the same technology as the Note 7. Which Past Features are you referring to?.. That usually only happens with an outdated phone or if the hardware doesn't allow it. In this case, the S7 hasn't even been out a year yet & the AoD is the same in the Note 7. I think it's only a matter of time.

What about apk from Note7 for S7/S7e, for AOD? I hope that maybe someone will port apk...

I have had every Samsung Galaxy phone from the S2 to the S7, skipping the S6. Samsung has never brought features from the newer device to the older device, despite the older device being fully capable. Example, no TouchWiz improvements, debloating, etc ever came to the older devices from the newer devices. My dad still uses the Note 3. The s-pen features specific to the Note 4 never made it to the Note 3, despite the device being fully capable. Like I said, I could be wrong, but I don't expect to see any features from the Note 7 on the S7, it's just not how Samsung does things.

Third party app notifications on AOD (WhatsApp etc) are already available using an Xposed mod called GalaxyXMod.

Yeah, I'm aware.. But I won't be rooting my S7e no time soon, not until the root method becomes more solid (stable).. I wouldn't root my phone just for 3rd party notifications.. & risk possibly bricking a $700 phone, I know it's way to revert to stock. Just not worth all the hassle yet

To be fair, if I owned a Qualcomm S7/S7E I wouldn't bother with root either so I don't blame you. From what I've read the side effects are just not worth the bother.

New update today, lots of new features... It also shows music info now. I couldn't get a screenshot of it though
EDIT: http://www.phonearena.com/news/Sams...at-adds-features-to-Always-On-Display_id86603

It looks neat, but my always on display is broken now anyway. Still waiting for the Tmobile replacement to arrive, been on backorder for like 10 days so far.

I don't post too often on the threads here but I was speaking with a Tmo rep over facebook over issues I have been having and he did mention an update coming to the S7E.
"Its fine Alex you don't need to worry about that I know you just want to address your concerns, especially since it is about your money so I can completely relate to that The refund to your card may take up to approximately 3 days to show up on your end so don't worry we got you. I know that we should be releasing an OTA update to your device soon so just keep a lookout for anything. Just like any phone that we have ever released we must make sure that the updates are fully optimized before launching those updates to make sure everything runs as seamlessly as possible. *DonH"

No, bone stock phone, no root. I have disabled some things via the built-in application manager, but nothing major. Facebook and stuff.
The problem is that when I turn on AOD or the edge night clock, it shows what it is supposed to show, but it also dimly lights up the entire display. This happened out of nowhere, one night when the night clock came on, so did every pixel. I was on a cruise ship that night and can't think of anything that I could associate it with. Never got the phone wet BTW. The weird thing is, the edge thing where you can see notifications, news ticker, stocks, etc, with the rest of the screen off, works perfectly fine. This persisted through several firmware updates and the latest AOD update. I have tried factory reset and even flashing new firmware via ODIN to no avail. There have been very few reports of this happening (maybe a handful total) and at least one stated that Samsung replaced his screen and problem solved.
In any case, it's been 14 days since I got the replacement approved and still no shipping estimate. I am wondering if the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco is pushing people into the GS7E, hence the demand.

Will pure AOSP Froyo ROM ever be a reality on Samsung Galaxy S devices?

Im thinking of getting a Epic 4g when they are released but Im very hesitant on this because what I have read about Samsung devices being "locked down". First off I prefer AOSP over touch wiz or sense, and I hoping to see this possible on theses devices someday. From what I have seen this may come down to a driver issue as they are encrypted by Samsung. I also want to use Wifi Tether too. Id like anyone who knows about theses devices to shed some light on this and help me make a decision. I dont understand why manufactures feel they need to put crap onto of Android when is more usable with out it. I just wish Samsung they just gave us the option of either roms.

This contradicts what I read elsewhere for the better Ill see if I can locate where I read this at, If this is the case why is there no custom roms besides Cyanogenmod? Where is a AOSP roms at? Or is the device just that new nothing is out yet? If this is true Ill be getting the Epic over the Evo
Wifi tether comes with the device, and I have to say I haven't had any problems with its use so far

Any devs that would care to comment on the possibility of a FroYo port for the SGS?

What nonsense
I'm a little confused about the situation with ROMs myself, coming from the Windows Mobile world. If the entire source to the build of Android on the Galaxy S is available, surely it's possible to change anything, theoretically? It also seems that the bootloader has no or negligible security as to what it can flash.
On the other hand, I've seen claims that it would be impossible to get Froyo or any future Android updates if Samsung don't release them first (I know they've committed to Froyo). Unless the driver model changes dramatically in Froyo, which I doubt since then new drivers would be required for every phone, why would it be any more difficult to port newer versions of Android to the Galaxy S than any other phone?

No, it's just that there are different components and layers which can be considered open or "locked down", and you both use different ones.
The bootloader for the samsung galaxy is not locked.
But there is an argument by the XDA forum member psychoace that some of the drivers for the galaxy S were not open sourced, and that in earlier android devices from samsung this made it very hard to create ROMs which are not based on Samsung's own ROMs.
As far as I know, this argument from psychoace was never countered, and so I see no reason not to believe it. (I did not look over the sources myself yet).
So can someone port new versions of Android over to the Galaxy S after Samsung has abandoned the device? I really don't know, but I wouldn't count on it, until someone who has experience with making custom ROMs says it is realistic.
The reason I state this is because other then the graphics, video playback, camera there is not much to shout about this device. The lagging is awful, it can't cope with multi tasking compared to say aswell the desire. The issue with the keyboard lagging. Internet crashing for no apparent reason. It seems as the samy gs cant handle the goodies packed into this device. No trackball, flash or led which is very useful.

as far as i understand it, the lagging issues are just because of the touchwiz and especially the samsung-widgets. removing the widgets and replacing the luncher with luncher-pro/adw will be the first thing i do when i have the device in my hands. on the other side: the hardware of the galaxy s is very good in my opinion!
@bookwormat:
i think you are wrong! i have read in some forums that samsung has released the drivers for 2.1 together with all other code! in fact i am just pulling the code (including the full kernel) from the samsung open source center (http://opensource.samsung.com/). it's huge, 148MB ... when it's finished i will give it a look an confirm what's in there and what not.
You might just want to take into consideration the fact that the Nexus and Desire had some problems as well right after launch.
The nexus took some time ( a couple of months) to set things straight, the Desire- A couple of weeks only. But it's understandable, since it's 95% identical to the nexus, so HTC probably knew what is going to be problematic.
Also, you're taking things to major extremes. You make it sound like the device is catastrophically slow to the level of being unuseable, and crashes every 2 minutes.
Reality, well, is different. The longest lag i had personally is 1.5 seconds when loading asphalt 5. Every other lag when opening an app- less than half a second.
I'd also like you to refrain from stating one personal problem as a bug in the device, you are the only known member in this forum that is having trouble with the keyboard.
A little search in MoDaCo forums reveals that some users are reporting slight problems with the keyboard, but it's limited to Firmware JG01 only.
It's sad that instead of taking a moment to see if you can solve these problems or helping others find a solution, you preffer to bash the device in every occasion.
For some reason Riz is really down on his SGS and to such an extent that it seems he's got a grudge against the device. Sell it or trade it in if it really makes you that unhappy.
For me it's really an awesome phone that comes with some minor annoyances that seem entirely caused by the fact that it's brand new. So far it appears that Samsung is putting a lot of effort in maturing the software and I expect the issues to be solved within a matter of weeks. In all reality it would take about 10 minutes to setup a new phone and have it operate well without even upgrading any firmware. A simple switch to launcherpro followed by a root with update.zip and then installing autokiller (i use strict profile) will solve 99% of the lag problems.
Battery life is very good after the first initial cycles.
GPS doesn't work right you may all ***** about that.
I'm sure I would be happy with the new HTC's, or even the iphone 4 (the thought of buying into apple's nasty attitude does make me cringe a bit) but I would still choose the SGS again providing they fix the gps.
Perhaps I'm being over critical but there are serious flaws with this device, there is no denying this.
GPS not working - there doesn't seem to be a solution, can't use copilot or googlemaps.
Lagging/freezing - changed to launcher pro not as bad but still occurs.
I hope the boys at samy are working hard to find fixes for these problems. If there are solutions then please guide me to them.
Don't get me wrong this device has potential and there alot of good features but due to issues mentioned above it just ruins the users experience.
I paid good money for this device not so that I could put it down but to use it. I'm just stating my experience for the benefit of others who maybe considering to buy this device.
If there are solutions wonderful p

Download the update.zip file from this thread.
Or direct link here
Copy the file to the internal storage card of the phone using Kies or whatever method you like.
Disconnect the usb cable
Turn off the phone
Press and hold these buttons at the same time: volume up+home+power, keep them pressed until you see the samsung logo.
Use volume rocker to navigate to update.zip and then press home to select.
Phone will reboot and you are now rooted with superuser.
The whole process takes less than 5 minutes.
I'm not responsible for anything
I like the phone but there are problems
1.keyboard has dup presses... solved with HTC keyboard. Also l key in portrait mode doesn't always work.
2. Gps lock not as good or reliable as my I 8910
3. StallING.. fix fixed it the only program that has a lag to load is sygic.
4. Image resizing not working well in gallery and web.
5. Still doesn't always switch back to 3g from edge. Jg1 is better than previous.

Is Galaxy S6 worth rooting?

Hi guys!
I'm writing this thread to anyone who is considering rooting his own S6. Well I wasn't sure for 5 month because I was afraid of losing my warranty. Like 3 days ago I decided to end with bloatware. This was one of the best thing I did in my life with my phone. Flashed XtreStoLite and custom kernel (arter97) and this device is now crazy fast... Damn I didn't expect these results. Also my battery is now much improved than it was before.
I know it's XDA forum, but maybe there are people like me, who are still waiting to root their phones. This thread will help them to take their decision.
Also you guys with rooted phones - write your feelings when you did it.
I've always rooted my phones and used custom ROMs, but I've become more and more reliant on my mobile banking apps recently. As they don't work on rooted phones, my S6 is staying unrooted.
Is Samsung Pay the only function you lose when rooting and/or installing a custom TW ROM?

You also lose Knox, warranty (depending upon your country) and OTAs.
I've always rooted my phones starting back when the galaxy s fascinate came out, been on this forum a long time and rooted lots of tabs and phones thru here. You can always flash back to stock if you don't like root.
I actually rooted my Nexus 5 but don't feel the need to root my S6. The only thing i used it was to change the dpi on nexus but with the screen grid option i don't even need to on S6. Phone is working perfectly fine and unrooted gives me peace of mind of safety and OTA updates.
Since Adblock Fast is available for M6.0.1, I don't need to root my SGS6. Web advertisements and banners was main reason for rooting my phone, because i was using Adaway, which is "root only" app. Adblock Fast is working like Adaway (except adcvertisements in free apps, of course - i don´t mind of that, I'm willing to pay for good app) and without root. Yes, with root I can have more functionality (exposed framework, tweaking stock apps, ...), but I can live without that. And I'm happy that my Knox is not tripped and have automatic OTAs.
I'm incredibly glad I didn't jump straight into rooting mine... The camera started to occasionally play up after a month, sometimes making a noise when focusing. This progressed over the months to becoming more frequent, and sometimes I'd have to literally shake the phone to get it to focus.
Two months in I handed it in but they couldn't find anything wrong with it. Five months in it was so bad that they couldn't deny it and repaired it there and then when I read the newspaper with a coffee (kudos to Samsung: only some stores offer that service).
So yeah, I wouldn't root my phone again within six months for that reason.
I'll still root it though - I'm just waiting for official TWRP compatibility at the moment.
As a side note, I asked the guy who handed my phone back if they check KNOX routinely. He told me yes for software issues, and occasionally for hardware issues (especially for screen issues). He didn't bother checking mine apparently.

Rootcloak fixes this.
I rooted mine mainly for adaway and xposed, but I have to say that not getting OTA is annoying - however Samsung is too slow with the updates that I don't care anymore (still no marshmallow in my country).
I had problems with mine I was on 5.1.1 rooted updated to marshmallow my phone came up with emergency calls only back on 5.1.1 after repair funny thing is the repair shop rooted my phone to make sim work again weird
Hi guys (and gals)
I've always rooted my phones because I wanted to have more powerful, flexible device. I did this with my old HTC Wildfire, HTC Desire HD and Nexus 4 but with S6 I don't feel I need this anymore. The device is just as good as-it-is – without root, Xposed, mods and so on. And 6.0.1 update gave it new shine and powers. Of course it's my personal opinion only but I must repeat – Galaxy S6 is the first Android phone I'm pleased to use without any modifications (maybe except for Nova Laucher ).
Have a great day!
I am happier with my marshmallow now that it's 6.0.1 rooted with xposed mods to tweak with it. I'll always root if I can just because I can't stand not messing with it, lol.

H820 OTA Update Aug 18

E: The Unsolicited OTA Update, or Why I'm Leaving This Phone. See post 3 for details.
I got a notice that there is an update for at least the ATT 820 variant of the G5 today. I'm not going to flash it until someone else does or we have a changelog, I dont want to ruin any potential root capabilities we might be looking into at the moment. Does anyone have any information on it? Guessing it's an attempt to close up some of the QuadRooter vulnerabilities, but that's just a guess.
Any info here?
E: Contacted both LG and ATT. Supposedly it's just to enable wifi calling and nothing else, but they didn't offer a changelog or anything so I'm not going to flash it as I don't care about that functionality.
I updated for the hell of it.
3 out of 4 vulnerabilities have been patched. Along with this, I've immediately noticed they added the normal launcher with app drawer. Much nicer.
Figured I'd take one for the team on this one...so if you want root, I'd suggest blocking this update as long as possible.
Update time. So, I didn't initiate the update. I didn't want to install it at all. I look down at my phone this afternoon and it says update on progress... Nice. OK, fine whatever.
Now there's a persistent notification in the pull-down whenever you don't have mobile data enabled. And you can't get rid of it unless you turn on mobile data.
Sorry, but **** this. I'm getting rid of the phone. This is ridiculous.
Screenshot attached. Returning the phone and probably just going to get another G3 that I "upgraded" from. Pity, I liked this phone, lots of potential but I can't handle no root, bootloader lock, ads, ads, ads, ads, and persistent notifications. I just honestly don't see how anyone can handle a phone without root and adblock these days. I also can't understand how if a consumer spends $600+ for a device that they cannot do whatever they wish to it. Brick it, throw it in the ocean, root it. Imagine if computers all came with a locked administrator account. Absurd.
Lol i will never root my device, last time i did, i ****ed it up, so i am happy with my stock lg g5, i will never root anyphone
I'm also not digging the H82011K OTA as it rendered my favorite data saving app unusable.
I was very happy with my rooted/rom'ed G3 until a bad CM13 nightly fried the motherboard. Now I've been suffering the life of G5 over a month and while it's not terrible (Adguard helps) it's just not the same. I'd still like to repair that G3 someday if I ever get the time/ patience to get around to it...
Nowadays people don't root often your phones because the software is getting better. If this is your first priority, you should get something like the Oneplus 3.

As far as "Live Patching" is concerned, I hope none of them do - ever. If I wanted my devices hijacked and tampered with behind my back I'd use Windows 10. This sounds bad for freedom within the Android community (why many chose it over iOS in the first place).

Shouldn't take more than a half hour. I replaced the broken screen and digitizer on my G3 after I dropped it on its face. Pretty easy really, the hardest part of getting the screen off was just getting the adhesive separated from the screen > body. Not bad at all. The board would be easier, it comes out as a piece.
Reason I downgraded to a G5 from my G3 is because even though the replacement screen was LG branded, it still had quirks... I'd be typing something and suddenly "This is a sentence I'm typinng aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"
Super annoying. But honestly, not as annoying as the newest G5 update + ads ads ads ads...

Hello, I am new to this device, and I have few question

Updated: I randomly search on Google. What I found is a Google play store APK, again, and I install it without any issue, and it works properly, which is quite surprising since I have faced so many times of failure of installing Play Store.apk!
Finally, I don't need to flash to get the Play Store. I just can't trust APKs downloaded from third-party websites.
1. I know Samsung uses AMOLED on all of S series phones, and the defect of AMOLED is the burn-in issue.
Since Samsung exploited the advantage of AMOLED for the AOD feature since S6, and I used to have both S6 and S6 EDGE, and that S6 was turned out burn-in after a year of use, I wonder did they improved the technology of AMOLED on S8 to slow down the deterioration? If it's not, I can't find the reason for turning on the AOD to kill my screen.
2. I bought this phone from China, and it's the US variant, but the vendor has flashed a Chinese stock ROM, which comes with no Google Play Store. But one thing, when I try to directly install the Play Store.apk, the system says I have already installed it. In settings, app drawer, no matter how I try, I still can't find the Play Store on anywhere, but the Play service is in the settings>app. Well, I have no luck with that, so I decide to install OpenGapps with ADB sideload, but it is failed with the signature verification thing, which is driving me crazy.
(OpenGapps version : ARM64 7.0 pico, stock)
3. If I can't install or find the Play Store in that ROM, I would like to flash a stock US ROM. Where I can find the official US ROM, and what should I do to flash the ROM? Odin?
Thanks, everyone.

1. Since we only have this phone for less than a year, can't say much about it.
2 & 3. I think you can flash US stock ROM using odin. Dunno whether it trips knox though. I tried this method on my Tab P585Y and it doesn't trip mine. The ROM link though, I don't have it, I think need to search.

1. Samsung is constantly developing the AMOLED technology. I thought it would be pretty good by now, but about a year with your your phone sounds terrible. Did Samsung exchange your phone? If it happens within two years it should be covered by warranty, or not? Regardless, the S8 is still only a few months old, so maybe it would be best to look around in S6 and S7 forums to see how the screens are holding up.
2.+3. I don´t think you can install the US ROM on your phone, because it´s a different model. You can however flash different Firmwares including ones with Playstore and google Apps. Unfortunately, As far as I understand you can not simply flash it via Odin. It´s a lot to read, but I think this will help you: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/samsung-galaxy-s8--s8-cross-device-development/recovery-twrp-galaxy-s8-s8-snapdragon-t3636718

Samsung will not cover burn in damage. Had a note edge and they didnt even explain me how to avoid the damage.
There is no burn-in issues on the S8. I've had mine since the day it came out and there is no issues with the screens.

I have tried Odin to flash, but it stuck at "SetupConnection", then, it is failed.
I can even set up a Google account and use its service, but the Google Play store just seems like it doesn't love me.

I have to admit I really love how AMOLED screens perform well in contrast and view-angle, but I also hate when the burn-in shows up after a period of time.
I guess that Samsung now uses the white status bar as a prevention for its screen defect. I still remember back in the time, there was a lot of users having the issue of status+navigation bar burn-in, and of course, I am one of those victims.

Need to update from KitKat 4.4.4

Hi all,
I've got a developers edition Galaxy Note 4 that I bought directly from Samsung 7ish years ago and it's still my daily driver. I rooted it immediately upon getting it and have never updated it past the KitKat version of Android that it came with. I rely on Google Voice and just got a message saying that Voice would soon stop running on KitKat so I need to upgrade my version of Android.
I've been out of the scene for a long time (as evidenced by my still using a 7 year old phone) so I'm looking for advice on a ROM to move to. My requirements are:
Must have root.
Must support Google Voice
Battery life is very important to me. This is one of the main reasons I stayed with KitKat. When later versions came out people were reporting much worse battery life. Not sure if this is still the case.
Must support s-pen. I use this quite frequently.
I prefer to stay with something close to stock. I don't need flashy 3D launcher effects of anything. I've got a Galaxy Tab S7+ and I'm familiar with (and like) recent versions of Samsung's UI.
GPS must be functional. I use Maps and Waze for navigation same need to continue. This probably won't be an issue, but I mention it because I remember some ROMS having trouble with this years ago.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. It's been so long since I've done this stuff I don't remember where to start. In addition to being rooted, I've got what is probably a very old version (2.8.1.1) of TWRP installed. Not sure if it would matter, but I'm also still on one of Verizon's old truly unlimited plans.
I've been doing some research and unless anyone here has a better idea I'm guessing the best move for me would be to upgrade to one of the official Android 6 builds that Samsung released for this phone. From what I gather, custom ROMs do not fully support the S-pen. Is that correct?
Do any pre-rooted versions of the Samsung 6.0.1 release exist that I could flash with my existing version of TWRP? I've seen some discussion of updating bootloaders but I'm not really sure what that's all about. Like I said, it's been many years since I've done this stuff.
Any and all advice and instruction and links appreciated.
I'd leave it be and ditch Gookill Voice... enjoy the better battery life.

I would, but I've used Google Voice for everything. In all these years I've never given anyone my actual carrier phone number. They've all gotten my Google Voice number.
I'm glad you left your comment though. It reminded me that battery life getting worse was one of the reasons I never did the update.
Not real sure what I'm going to do. I might just limp along as it is for a month and maybe buy the Galaxy Fold 3 when it comes out.
I use the a Custom ROM which is Android 6.0.1 for my SM-N910P called Q15_Plus_TidBits_VB3.0.1. So far I get about 14 hours on the battery with average use, and that is without using the battery saving modes. It is stable, and quite honestly runs everything (including Google Voice which I rely on). The only complaint I can think of is that I don't have a 'power button flashlight' feature installed.
