Over heat issue - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I bought the phone from someone with this issue. It gets hot very fast when I use it, also when in charge, so much that sometimes I can't touch it. The battery also drains very fast when it's in use. I tried every solution on Google I could find but no luck. It also won't power on without the charger being in even when battery is fully charged. I rooted it now and want to know if I install cyanogenmod Wil maybe resolve this issue? Thanks.

Have you tried upgrading the firmware to the latest version and performing a hard factory reset afterwards?

Yes I did.

Yes I have 2

That is strange as the only time my N910C uses allot of power is when I play 3D intensive games on it or use to work on heavy tasks.

Could this be the motherboard that's faulty or something?

I also got my phone second hand from a guy and my phone also gets hot when making intensive tasks. I don't usually play games. But it gets hot when using location(Tinder). Is this related to ROM. I don't think it has to do with the motherboard although you should go and see a service!! Let me know what were your results. Thanks

Yeah, I'd take it to a Samsung Service Center and let them check it out. It could be the battery cable is loose.

So a custom rom won't fix?

I also had the same issue when i first bought my phone 4 month ago but after the latest update the over heat problem is gone. Try to flash the stock rom through odin. Battery problem your facing it could be from the battery calibration try to drain out the battery let drain fully if your phone switched off by itself try to power it on again for many times as possible then charge your phone while it's switched off for 2 hrs power on your phone and charge it again for 30 min hopefully this will resolve the battery calibration issue.

You should try it out. When i a got my SM-N910F, it was a real hot headed one (on Stock 5.0.1).
After flashing a custom rom, the tempratures dropped significantly.
Currently iam running a custom kernel and undervoltet slightly. The Phone is running cool and stable.

Depends. Only in case your problem is software related. In case of an hardware defect, a custom rom won't change anything. You should monitor your GPU and CPU usage of your device. You can use apps like cpu z to measure it. When the clock speed of you CPU is constantly high even with the simplest tasks, you can consider rooting your device, flashing a custom rom/kernel and try to reduce the clock speed. This may help keeping the temperature in check but won't do anything about defective hardware.
But, as you said, this problem persists even with stock firmware (maybe the guy you bought it from flashed the wrong firmware.....) this could only have 3 reasons: 1. defective hardware, 2. defective software/wrong firmware, 3. Some of your apps in the background is going crazy (try to use better battery stats or wakelock detector for that).
Good luck.

Tried to install cyanogenmod but I get error dm vertify verification failed with reboot. I Google it and tried everything but doesn't looked like there's a fix for this. Anyone had similar issue or have a solution for this pls? Thanks.

Heat problem and battery drain on i9500

Hello all! I just wonder if you guys have the same problem that I do, after about 4 minutes of chilling in menus or doing something that wouldn't use CPU much causes heating at the top and top-back of the device and by that time battery just drains.
My device is i9500. I flashed Wanam's kernel (Adam V1) yesterday night to see if anything would change, but nothing has changed so far.
All of the gestures and stuff are off and the screen brightness is set to automatic.
I just wonder if you guys have the same issues.

I do have the same heating problem while using less cpu intensive tasks and battery is draining fast even if its in standby mode(i mean when still screen is off).
Same.
Huge battery drain issue and serious overheating on the i9500
I'm just sitting and waiting some updates, patches and fixes like everyone else. Missing my Note2 :crying:

hope it will show the cause of the fast draining
No issue here. I've been using the AT&T version of the S4 for the last few days. Playing games & web browsing for extended amounts of time. I haven't felt any heating on the device thus far.
iv got serious issues as well...
apps like nova launcher using so much??
apps usage greater than screen usage..

Well guys, I have charged it full and then after 15 minutes I have used BatteryCallibration app to wipe battery stats (It needs root), drain is not changed but the heat problem seems better. I will use it for 1 or 2 more cycles then post the situation.
And I will try to flash another modem.
Ext. SD is unplugged btw.

Odd, mine seems to be a lot better battery wise since 4.3... You might want to use BetterBatteryStats to pinpoint the cause (maybe some wakelocks etc.)
Flash a custom kernel.
Yes, me too, battery seems worse than in 4.2.2. Or is it just because that I use it more now i.e. to restore apps etc?
Really? Oh no!!

Im gonna go back to 4.1.2 because it has the best battery life which 4.2.2 and 4.3 doesnt have
me too. Really hoped android 4.3 fixed this problem ;(
been having this battery drain problem ever since 4.2.2
Do you guys have this drain problem in IDLE mode? because I do..
rough estimate, it drains like 7 to 8% in one hour when my device is in SLEEP mode..
But to all this, what apps or services seems to be draining the battery?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I don't know what your talk in about, I'm getting better battery life than I ever did before. I'm UV by 25 running faux kernel (u21), and clean ROM. I just removed all the gapps I don't use, and don't run anything that needs background syncing. Did you guys do clean installs(full flash via fastboot)?
I also turned off daydream which I am suspicious of, yet I have no proof that it does anything

Thats the problem, I hard factory resetted several times and leave it alone with no new apps
installed before.. disabled NFC, my mobile connection.. and still it drains like a leaky hose in idle mode..
some friendly ppl here suggested installing greenify and betterbatterystats and stuff..
but it doesnt really help me pinpoint whats doing the draining.. maybe because I am not sure what I am looking at..
end result, i even flashed (nearly bricked my nexus on several occasions too) and still the drain is there..
I thought my battery is dying or something.. but my nexus is barely 6 months old.. and battery status shows it as GOOD..
so yea, I am stumped..
Yeap.
I am having the same problem with the battery, the battery is spent very quickly, I have less applications installed and lately I have not used the phone to see if it was me and nothing. It may be because manually install the OTA?
Does the rule of waiting a few days/recharge cycles to get a true sense of the battery not apply to Nexus devices like it does to Samsung devices?

The initial battery drain after flashing can be attributed to apps conducting their first sync and the kernel "settling." This only takes a matter of hours at best. After that, one can get a fairly accurate idea of how their battery is being tasked.

i used to get horrible battery drain until I disabled google now.
I'm also experiencing severe battery drain after taking the 4.3 update on my stock, unrooted Nexus 7. It's been 3 days and no improvement.

I too face same problem, and the App sucking most of the battery is "Kernel (Android OS)", second one is "Launcher", "Phone" and "Android System".
Any suggestions solutions found for this battery issue?

Gs4 hot?

I just got a gs4 and am coming from the gs3. Does this phone run hot normally? Seemed warm on stock and hotter once I tried to install the freegs4 ROM. Even shut down twice.
Edit: flashed a different ROM and kernel and am all good.

Not true on my part. I've flashed stock deodexed MF9 rom with Stock MF9, Agats, and Ktoonz kernel. All resulted in the phone heating up and shutting down on its own.

The only kernel adjustments were to the governor and scheduler (using smartass and sio, no alterations to either). I just tried using the rescan media disabler apk to see if maybe my media was causing the phone to run hot. It seemed to be the only thing going in the background.

Usually the heat starts when I am using the phone, which is usually browsing the internet or reading up on sports news. Screen off or charging I have been OK so far. As far as the battery, it appears to be in good physical condition. I also have 2 OEM batteries by Anker that experience the same issue. So far so good, though - been using the phone moderately since the last shut down earlier today and it seems ok at this moment.

if it heats up really bad again try underclocking a step and see if that helps.....phone might be getting hot because your chip is poorly coated and the higher frequiencies are heating it up enough to shut the device down. you may have to underclock by one or 2 steps to ensure its not a consistent issue.....worth a shot anyways. unless you do high graphic gaming and multitask with 8 apps at once your really dont need the higher clock speeds anyways.

Good idea, hopefully I won't need to! Appreciate the feedback.
If you just got this phone Friday then I would return to stock, run triangle away and exchange it. What you describe isn't normal, why take a chance and get stuck with a bad phone when you are within the exchange window.

Thanks all. I loaded up the latest Sac ROM and ktoonz kernwl, but disabled media scanner. No more hot issues. I guess it running like crazy in the background caused the battery to commit suicide.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk 2
Seriously guys, your S4 doesn't heat up at all???
I'm back to 100% stock everything (kernel, rom) and running this for a couple weeks. I've completed several factory resets and whatnot as well through those weeks. I know my install was clean as could be.
Now, my phone gets hot at seemingly random times. sometimes playing games, for sure while navigating with GPS and sometimes when its just sitting there. I monitor things with Better Battery Stats and keep an eye on the CPU Spy. I'm achieving deep sleep most often. Some of this is caused by the god awful Sprint service here and the constant search for signal, but I was hoping that this wouldn't get as hot as the S3.
so, should I seek a refurb from Sprint? I have the insurance. I am just afraid that a refurb would do me no better.
My biggest gripes are heating up occasionally, WiFi disconnect issues. I hope 4.3 can help some of these.

[Q] Note 3 random powers down

For about a Week my note 3 started to just power down. Sometimes it happens when I deactivate the lock screen or it might happen when Im just using my phone.
I have updated it to kitkat N9005XXUENB3_N9005OXXENB1_XEO and have tried other custom roms and it still is doing the same. PLEASE any advice would be awesome!
thanks in advance.

Try FULL wipe (Including wiping internal sd) and then reflash the ROM and see if it still continues, if it does... You might have to take the device in for servicing.
Thanks for the reply. I have triped knox so how can i take it in for a service? Could it be anything else apart from a hardware fault?? Thanks

Well, if it will be a real problem than you should still take it into service, maybe that guy will forget to check the knox.
I'm starting to notice that I'm not getting no power downs when the charging lead is pluged in the phone.
Might it be a battery issue? If so how much does one cost for a note 3?

I had the same problem with my n7100 a few months ago.
the problem was, that one of the 4 battery contacts was a bit dirty (dont ask how this happened :silly, so a hard (or less hard) shake of the phone could interrupt the contact for a moment and the phone restarted.
I know its unlikely, but better check it before sendind it to the service

Going to order another battery for backup also.

[Q] UK S5 Updated to G900FXXU1ANE2 - Problems

Hi,
A couple of days ago I updated my S5 to G900FXXU1ANE2 with Kies 3 from my PC.
I've noticed worse battery life, but I guess its too early to judge so I'll give it a week or so and a few more cycles.
However, I have noticed that during ALL games the battery gets ridiculously hot. I've never had this on any previous firmware updates. If its related to the flash/firmware then I am tempted to go back as it never used to get hot and battery life was a couple of days.
I know there will be some stock answers advising me to do a factory reset, but I'd really rather not.
Cheers,
GG

I had strange battery life, too.
"Multimedia" drained my battery and phone became hot!
It seems that there is a scan of every media on SD after update..
Today I have another problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2737673
EDIT: Multimedia started again draining my battery.. I can't believe it..!!!
Noticed my battery life isn't as good after the update either. Not noticed any difference heat wise though.
