[Q] Flash from recovery or Odin

Sorry if this is a simple question; What I want to know is, do I have to use some recovery mod and flash from the SD card, or can I simply flash custom ROMs from odin 3.09, the same as I did for my stock rom?
Specifically Imperium ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2706844&nocache=1
Many thanks.

You always need a custom recovery to flash roms from either your internal or external sd card
I'd suggest philz recovery just flash the .tar file from here in odin then enter recovery & flash away
Not sure if you have rooted your phone as yet if not follow this link first
Okay, I never used a custom recovery when flashing the stock rom.?
I can't just download and flash the rom in Odin from my pc then?

No bud you can't :crying:
You aren't flashing a stock rom it's a custom rom hence the custom recovery ?
Darn, and I thought it was all so easy!
Okay, I need to start looking how to put a custom recovery on then.
I have rooted it using Odin already yeah

Yeah just flash it in pda then flash rom from philz recovery then it's done just setup required
You won't need odin again unless you want to return to stock (which I doubt).
P.s you should like the imperium rom you've been lookin at

Thanks, its between that one and Purified with Domination theme (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2454205). Not sure which to go for yet, it'll be down to style/reliability/stability/speed.
What I meant was, I can't flash the recovery in odin, then flash the new rom in odin too?

No just flash recovery in odin & then just use recovery (power/volume up) to flash rom. No need for odin again

Help! Custom binary

Help! I am still on stock kitkat and I have reactivation lock (yep I know thats the problem) on. Then I decided to install a custom recovery (twrp) via flashify and then I booted into recovery, now it says "custom binary blocked by reactivation lock" and "secure fail: recovery". If I try to reboot my phone it keeps booting into recovery mode.
My question is do I have to install the firmware all again or can I also install only the stock recovery with odin and make the phone work all again? If it is the second one... Can someone PLEASE upload a file of the kitkat recovery? Thx in regards!
dude install stock kitkat firmware for ur device and extract recovery.img inside the tar file then convert recovery.img to tar hope u understood

Thank you for your answer
However I did it another way lol, just flashed the whole rom all again with odin and it works flawlessly. There's no need to wipe anything.

You are not following the correct way to flash. That is why the twrp wont stick at recovery.
Follow my advice as follow:
1. Remove battery
2. Odin flash TWRP
see the result

TWRP wont start up after odin flash.

I have found my TWRP https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=56315 for marshmallow the flashing process with odin works no problem when i try to boot into recovery I get the stock recovery.. Tried downloading different places with no luck. It get flashed by odin but doesn't work?

You should make a search before posting a question. Here's my thread of twrp recovery for J5 MM. Everything's explained over their in detail just download the recovery for your device model and follow the flashing instructions. The link that you are referring to is twrp recovery for Lollipop.

Never upload the files to a different site without permission instead point them to the thread or Forum. You are not supposed to upload someone's work on your own. Take down the link. :good:

Can't seem to install custom recovery

I can't seem to install a custom recovery. I've rooted my note 3. I don't know if my bootloader is already unlocked. I have the international exynos version. When I try to flash twrp or cwm it says the flash is successful. But when I try to boot into recovery I get a crashing android sign for less than a second, and then goes into the regular android recovery.
Like I said, I don't know if the bootloader is unlocked. When I try to unlock the bootloader through adb it says that command is not recognized: fastboot unlock oem.
I hope someone can give me some advice, thanks!
What model , check under battery .
