I received the device today. Like it. B has a few bugs and some missing features
1. DND force closes when setting schedule
2. No double tap power button for camera
3. No DND quick setting
4. Be nice if second sim icon would disappear if second sim is off
5. Not able to hide icons in status bar
6. I tried activating system UI tuner. Although you get the setting icon spinning, no system UI tuner. At least not that I've seen.
This all can be fine with software updates

I'd say we're about 70% of the way to an actual bootloader unlock. One of the MiFavor devs on the Chinese ZTE forums said they were working on it. But, that doesn't mean they can't back out now and disappoint everyone. If we do get bootloader unlock, we will at least be one step closer.

It was a MiFavor (the phone's official OS) developer, so I'd say first party. https://community.zteusa.com/thread/11200
The System UI tuner isn't a bug but a feature left out on purpose. Most devices that aren't running stock Android get that feature blocked.

Because it is a feature. ZTE just opted not to enable it. It's a feature, just not on this device.
Anyway to hide status bar icons?
Probably not without root or the System UI tuner enabled.
My GPS is wonky... It won't lock on location and barely can do navigation ...any help or a solution... I restarted, factory and still is not performing.

Any custom ROM will probably have bad camera quality and weird sound optimization. Just give me root with this ROM. I'll disable everything I don't need.
I'll add some bugs/complaints:
1) Notifications(especially music) not showing on the lock screen
2) No option to use an on-screen navbar. This would be extremely useful at night.
Sent from my ZTE A2017U using Tapatalk
None of these are bugs, just features that are missing or complaints lol. Bugs involving broken functionality on a fundamental level.
In developer options there is a lovely little feature - OEM Unlocking (Bootloader Unlock). It unlocks the bootloader but warns "Device protection features won't work while this setting is turned on".
Apparently doesn't work at the moment but I'm sure a Dev could do something with this...

Friends--
If you're like me, you've found the native 'ok google' prompt to be a much faster / more elegant solution on lollipop than the moto middleman.
We can disable the moto software and enable the google implementation, however we are never given the option for it to work while the screen is off (and unplugged). We know that the hardware is there, so I am assuming that there is a flag somewhere that we need to change.
I'm going to start exploring on my own, but anyone else who can help look / has ideas on where to look, i figured this thread could be a group development project on this.
Looking forward to this!
Anyone have a thought on where to start looking?

After disabling Moto Voice, go to the Google Settings app -> Search & Now -> Voice -> "Ok Google" Detection.
There you can set "Ok Google" to respond then the device is locked.

It's terrible and unfair! Motorola says they are giving the "Pure" Android Experience, no bloatware, just adding "Value Added" Software. Thank you Motorola, but give me a CHOICE! If you are FORCING your software on me, you are no better than Verizon!
This phone HAS the Instant On Hardware, and Lollipop Fully supports it. Again, thank you Motorola for your enhancements to Google Now (for those that like them). BUT for those of us that that don't, crippling Android Functionality is NOT the answer!!!
Give it back!!!

I look forward to your findings. Being able to use Ok Google from the screen off state -while- unplugged would be nice to have. I'd bet dollar to doughnuts that moto disabled the necessary flag in order to allow their Voice middleware to function properly - without giving it the ability to set it back when Voice is disabled.
I think I've read something somewhere about flag 199? It's likely I'm mistaken though.
Good luck!

The hardware in the Moto X 2014 was designed to work with Motorola's implementation of screen-off voice recognition. Unfortunately the phone came out just a little too early to have the "standard" Google implementation since phones supporting that did not start coming out until ~1 month later.
It's not that easy
The X8 processing core in this device comes with a Natural Language Computing Processor NLCP core built in, which is a proprietary low power implementation. Therefore, the software portion that handles the output from the core is custom made by Motorola, and is not something that you find in the Android source tree, because a low power LCP core like the X8 never existed before. Similarly, the 'Ok Google' implementation is Google's proprietary implementation, part of the Google Suite of Applications, only to be installed as add-ons on devices that are compatible with 'Android Compatibility Definition Document'. The apps provided by Google usually do not undergo any OEM customizations.
To conclude, it's not as easy as enabling/ disabling a flag in the Android source to link to proprietary implementations from different vendors together.
P.S - Google's 'Ok Google' may work from from all the screens including a secure lock screen, but it cannot leverage the low power LCP core. This will impact your battery life !!!

Yeah got it to work yesterday (with the screen off) for about 2 hours. Then it started not to work at all. Went back to Moto native app and its hit and miss with the app. hopefully it get fix cause its pretty annoying that the reason why i got this phone is because of this feature.
Not only the response is slower and unstable but it is limited to a single person..
Native ok google never fails... Its quicker.. And allows my girlfriend to give commands to the phone on the car along with me...
This thread has a simple tasker profile to do this. http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/1rfqsj/psa_note_3_has_always_listening_out_of_the_box/
That doesn't help me, since I would like the option to use both at the same time. What chip is the nexus 6 using, I thought they were close. Both TI dsps right? Would it be possible to trick now into thinking it is on a Nexus 6?

Its the exact same chip. We should be able to have that feature working on ours as well. We'd have a better chance if we reach out to Motorola to make it possible. Just like switching on the ambient display, they should let us chose between google now or moto voice!
My new fancy moto x play is missing a decent feature to check whether I have new messages. I do dig the moto display function, but it isn't enough.
With the lack of a button on the front side of the phone you have to reach up to the side. It's a minor inconvenience, but still...
Double tap would be great wake the phone, but I doubt it can be done at this moment as there's no root yet.

If you use Squids kernel, you can enable the LED on the device. Yes there is one. No I won't tell you about it. Look around the X section. It's really the best way to find out the most about a device.
If you noticed, the moto app has a "screen function" giving you your notifs right away when you move your phone (when you take your phone for example). I use this feature to "wake the screen" and see the SMS or other notifications. Type "Moto" in the android apps search bar and open the Moto app to configure it. There's plenty of other cool features there too. The "speak to me" feature is really helpful when I drive. I can listen to texts, answer to them by voice recognition... Still some bugs sometimes but hey, nothing is perfect huh. Hope this helps.
Also, Automate, Trigger, Tasker and Agent are all apps that can an help you find a way to get over that design default. Everybody that used an LG G2-G3 and prolly G4 too knows how this double tap feature is killer.

Thanks! Sprint's service is mediocre where I live but it's very cheap and they roll out updates promptly (or as promptly as Samsung allows). Still, no theming is disappointing even though they did bring over updates to the S-pen.
Time to look forward to N, if not OTA then via custom ROMs! The multi-window there is more robust and behaves more how I'd expect it to.
Adoptable storage will work if you use the S7 work around via ADB

lol gonna piss off some guys at work tomorrow who have limited verizon plans that no more Pandora during work (for now anyway).
Also there's the option to turn off Fast Charge now, not sure if the previous had this option.
One more thing, even after your battery goes below 15% you can still adjust the brightness slider. It doesn't turn dark and dissappear now like it used to.
In official Nougat it seems Google did not add back in the option to direct reply to a notification without unlocking first, which was present in some of the developer previews...
Since it looks like it's not coming back, is there a 3rd party way that this can be done with or without root? It's definitely one of the most useful features that was available on the DPs and back when I was on iOS.
Thanks in advance!

Just thought I'd let those of you who can't root their note and didn't know that Samsung blocked all the ability to theme/change fonts on your phone from anywhere but their official theme store. So, if you have substratum and have purchased andromeda, themegalaxy, swift installer.....etc, you are SOL. In order for any of those to work, you'd have to have root. This is going to be my last Sammy phone ever. First they lock down their bootloaders (I know carriers are involved and want you to upgrade every year), then now are locking any third party themes. And to top it off, they are horrible at pushing updates/new software to their customers. If you buy a locked down phone, you'd get a couple of updates (I mean android versions not security updates) then you're stuck with an older version of android until you buy a new phone.
Just thought I'd throw this out there so you decide whether or not to update to pie. IF there is a way to block automatic updates.

I think is has to do with Google slowly working towards making a dark theme systemwide, should be available on next version of Android. You can also expect even more difficulties using overlays on next Android.
Google is trying to tighten things up on Android. Do I like? No! But we can't say they are wrong to do it either.
I mean, look at how many Android devices are activated daily. Security lately is a much bigger concern for all companies and users. Blocking modifications and overlays is a way of making your phone more secure.
Thanks for sharing but I don't use third party themes anymore since most of them seems to drain the battery way too much
