I am using my SIM from an iphone, and my stock device won't let me enable WiFi hotspot, telling me it needs to be enabled on my plan. The tethering worked fine on the iphone and the 3GB Mobile Share plan I am on says that it is permitted.
Do other people have this working? Is this because they don't have my proper IMEI attached to the SIM? Does AT&T have these IMEI numbers in their database or will I lose LTE if I update my IMEI?

Can anyone with HTC 8X or Nokia 822 confirm what happens when you turn on internet sharing with an unlimited data plan? Does it prompt you to call Verizon to activate a tethering plan? Or does it just work?
Its tells me to call Verizon and subscribe....nokia 822... I have rooted galaxy nexus I use for tethering

Carries suck.
This kind of stuff irks me. Why do they charge you more to use the exact same data?

I have a brand-new 8X. when I turn on IS, it says "connection not shared - Internet sharing isn't currently allowed." However I am not on the new all-share unlimited plan until the 20th, so maybe that's why.
I have a VZ unlimited data plan and after changing some settings, it just works.. before you get the agreement page to add it to your plan, but after going into edit mode: M.I.P. profile > DUN NM the info has your number @dun.vzw... just take out the dun and save.. but I have an HTC trophy... so may not be the same..
Is there any way to create an App that does this? Verizon recently lost a suit from the FCC that forced them to allow tethering apps from the android market for android phones. FoxFi and others now allow tethering no matter what plan you have.
If the access exists within WP8 it would be sweet to do the same thing, even if it has to be developer unlocked.
I was just coming here to find out if this was possible. I currently have a 32gb SIII and am getting ready to trade it for a 8X but need this to work. I am not willing to give up my unlimited plan though...
can we sue ATT, Verizon for tethering lock?

No we can't sue them about the lock. The reason they were able to go after them was because they blocked an app from the marketplace from working on their network.
That violated the agreement they signed with the FCC when they acquired the 700MHZ block which says “shall not deny, limit, or restrict the ability of their customers to use the devices and application of their choice.”
So only Verizon is beholden to this and it would only apply to them blocking devices or apps. You might notice that devices part is pretty interesting

I have the HTC 8x and would love to get Internet Sharing working. Where is the "agreement page"?
I put in my chip and it can't connect at all? Is there anything special I need to do to be able to connect to AT&T?

That thread should work. One thing to remember, if you don't have an LTE data plan on your account then you need to use "phone" instead of "pta," which is also mentioned in the post.
I called them last night, from the new phone, after popping my iPhone 4 (3g speed) sim in. Told them I wanted to re-provision my grandfathered unlimited plan to a Smarthphone 4g plan. When they asked I just gave them the IMEI off the Nexus and said it was an LG phone (Optimus G, I did have to re-iterate that a few times to them). Then used the 'phone' APN, 'pta' wouldnt work as I think thats LTE specific, and when they told me to reboot I had data. Checked my at&t account immediately after, and my old Unlimited Data for iPhone had been changed to "Data Unlimited SmartPhone Personal". Was pretty easy =)
Have a unlocked Verizon Moto E4. Trying to setup a wifi hotspot, and it sets up fine, and connects fine as well.
Problem is is the connected devices cannot access the internet.
Same sim works fine in a Galaxy S7 setup as hotspot so it's not T-Mobile. It's something to do with the Moto E4. Anyone got any leads?
TIA.

Some phones check with the carrier to determine if hotspot is allowed. Moto phones do this check, so I think that is the issue.

Actually, in your case it would be checking with T-Mobile. I know I tried it with a Freedompop LTE SIM which runs on AT&T and it would say "checking subscription status" and then say it couldn't connect to the server and the hotspot wouldn't start. In that case it checks with AT&T.
When I tried with the same with a Freedompop Global SIM which runs on T-Mobile, it does the same as yours - starts the hotspot and allows connection but no internet connection for the connected devices.
If you were running it on Verizon Prepaid, they allow hotspot on all their prepaid plans except their unlimited plan.

guess you didnt read the OP, the same sim works as a hotspot on my international s7.
I had this problem with a retail bought carrier unlocked phone with Sprint, with an unlocked bootloader, and rooted. I narrowed it down to two possibilities. The first is the E4 (retail, carrier unlocked - on Sprint at least) needs an ISIM (I don't know if this is just for CDMA networks or not). ISIM cards apparently have additional software on them that may be part of the problem. The other possibility is there have been changes made by Google to Android to try to stop bypassing carrier tethering restrictions.
That said, I did activate the phone first, then unlocked the bootloader, and proceeded to root. When I have the chance, I'm going to try flashing it back to stock to clear out everything I tried, root, make the necessary changes to build.prop and the global settings db, and then reactivate to see if it makes a difference. Otherwise I'll be experimenting with other ROMs/firmware when something is available.

I did. I'm assuming that your S7 doesn't do the same check.

very strange ..I believe its got something to do with the fact that its a Verizon phone. They must have blocked it on the device.

well, the problem I have is this is a Verizon phone, so I cannot unlock the BL and root it
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
The fix is to edit the build.prop by adding the line net.tethering.noprovisioning=true but since Motorola will not allow a Verizon XT1767PP bootloader to be unlocked; there is no solution?
FoxFi no longer works with Android 7.
The command did not help.
adb shell settings put global net.tethering.noprovisioning true
adb shell settings put system net.tethering.noprovisioning true
I know this is an old thread now, but by any chance did you try adding default, dun, supl to your apns "apn type" part?
I just now switched from AT&T to T-mobile because I finally got sick of AT&T for various reasons including very high prices. The network lock is removed. How can I get wi-fi calling to work on this phone? When I try to enable it, I get "To enable this service you must confirm your emergency address.". Then I see "Wi-Fi calling lets you make and receive calls over Wi-Fi with your AT&T account. When you use Wi-Fi Calling, information about the country where the Wi-Fi connection is made will be sent to your carrier. Learn more about Wi-Fi Calling.". The last two words are a link to https://m.att.com/shopmobile/wireless/features/wifi-calling.html?referrer=. It seems there's a hangup of AT&T versus T-mobile. What should I be doing to get this working?
In case anyone is wondering, this particular phone is being used because it must be kept unrooted. I have a G900T that has been rooted.
My T-Mobile 6T has been great so far, but when I used the hotspot earlier today I was disappointed by the wireless tethering speeds. I popped the SIM card back into my old phone (unlocked Mate 9) and, although wireless speeds were slower overall, the tethering was much faster. I attempted to edit the APN settings, but everything was grayed out. I was able to add my own APN, but when attempting to enter 'APN type' received a message saying "Carrier does not allow adding APNs of type dun." Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this? Is T-Mobile trying to get me to pay more for 4G tethering by somehow slowing my hotspot to below 3G speeds? Would the international ROM be able to circumvent this?
Thanks
if you're paying for 4G tethering, then call T mobile and ask for help
If you're trying to steal it without paying for it, thats a different story

Not trying to steal 4G, just wondering why the 6T's hotspot is slow much slower than my old phone when the the phone itself is so much more capable. My Mate 9 gets closer to full 3G speeds (500Kbps) when tethering.
Thanks
The only stealing that would be going on is the carrier trying to get him to pay for the same data twice.
