Google voice is a cloud-based visual voicemail manager and can be used as a call redirector to redirect incoming calls to one or more devices capable of receiving voice calls.
Google also supports direct phone calling from the desktop (but not currently from non-phone mobile devices).
What are you trying to set up?

people have made the Galaxy Tab working with Google voice.
Make and receive calls from the Galaxy Tab with Google Voice
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItTIswb1AnQ
In that video he is using a SIM card from a device with voice + data (which you can not get on the Tabs original SIM card. (Which is why is is "stuck on 2g"))
There are fixes and work-arounds that allow the 2g + voice option and they can be found in this forum as well as the development forum. Currently, there is no known way to do voice calls + 3g on the tmobile network (which I assume you are on because that's what he is on in the video)
Google voice is simply a redirector, it is NOT a program that makes phone calls. In order to use it, you still must have a number to route to and from.
Hope this helps.
What the OP may be thinking of is integrating Google Voice with a VOIP provider such as Skype or pbxes.
If that is the case, there are a number of excellent tutorials already on this forum explaining how to do that for different VOIP suppliers.

this is also worth a read.
What can also be done is, if you have your tab set up to be a phone with any of the "free favourites" plans is to have GV send you ITS number instead of the caller's original number so that all incoming calls are free.
Similarly, if you install GV on a phone, you can set it to intercept all outgoing calls and forward them to a special local GV number - which I believe can also be added as a favourite - thereby enabling free calling within the US.

From the first moment I started the phone and booted up Voice, I've had some small issues. I'm posting here to see if anyone else has had similar issues.
When I was setting up Voice I received a message that the "forwarding number change [was] unsuccessful". I haven't noticed any particular issues resulting from this, but still, it was disconcerting. You can check to see of you have the same issue by going to Settings > Call Settings > Voicemail Settings (if you are using voice) > and then click on your phone number.
The second issue is that the ringtone is stuck as the defualt beeping noise that the phone makes on shutdown... This is when people call me on my voice number. Ringtones for contacts calling my AT&T number are working fine.
I'd love to hear if anyone else is experiencing this, and especially if you found a fix!
Thanks.

Yeah, I forgot about that--I got a voicemail notification 2 hours after the phone call yesterday. An outgoing SMS froze too.

did you go to google.com/voice from a PC and change your settings there? When I first got my Atrix, the Google Voice was set up for my Nexus One and didn't work (even after configuring) on my Atrix. So I had to tell it I had a different phone, it gave me a number with hash symbols (#) to punch in the dialer and hit "call". this then forwarded my number to google voice for use with voicemails. I now have no issues with Google Voice... well, I have one issue. The proximity sensor doesn't turn off the screen when I put the phone up to my ear to listen to a voicemail like it did on my Nexus One.
I ran into the same issue when setting up about the number unsuccessful, but I went into phone options in settings and manually changed the carrier. I havent had any other issues, all notifications are instant and I have a custom ringtone.

It's amazing! It's the best way to get Visual Voicemail on an Android device and it's free. To be honest if it wasn't for this app, I would have stayed with my iphone as giving up visual voicemail was a no go for me and the other apps on the market for it were not to my liking.
Once you set it, it will alert you when a voicemail comes in and also transcribe it for you. Aside from that you can even have it send an e-mail to you when voicemail comes in, you can also use voice to make calls, send texts, and much more. Best of all, it's free!
@OP: Mine did the same thing, but I haven't had any issues. If you are getting delays in the notifications, load up google voice and go to settings. From settings make sure "synchronize inbox" and "background data" are enabled.
So I got it but it keeps saying forward voice mail unsucsesful any ideas

Thanks--this is the answer. I too came from a Nexus One and I didn't change any of the settings at first. I had to delete my old forwarding number (which requires another forwarding number to be on the profile), and then make a new forwarding number profile (for my Atrix). This fixed my different ringtone issue as well. Took a few tries and wasn't as smooth as I would have liked, but I got it working--I wasn't doing well without my GV!!
Im routing my calls through voice but every once in a while a lady says "this call is now being recorded". I didn't hit anything. It seems random. Any ideas?

Ok if you have all the requirements installed. Then go to Google.com/voice on you PC and click on settings in there and create a Google voice phone number then link a phone number to your Google voice account like your real cell number or even your home number. Then don't use that number but use Google chat. Now when you open Google voice on your phone it should setup correctly. Then open grooveip sign in with your Google user and pass. Then in groove IP make a phone call. It will call from you new Google voice number. And if you call that number it will ring that phone because Google chat/talk is linking it.

Debating on google voice. My boss swears by it but I read more bad then good. I know sprint users get basiclly a more functional version, but is it worth it. What am I losing. I know if I go cm9 that ill pretty much have to go to google voice for functioning voicemail. Yes I know how to move the vvm, but results seem veried on the annoying 9016 txt. Who's using google voice and is it worth the effort?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Don't do the integrating with your sprint number. Just set it up as your voicemail. That way its not a permanent thing that takes sprint support to undo. Just choose skip integration when you try it out. It will have you dial a code to forward unanswered calls to gv and then you are set.
I like it. The transcription is mostly useless. It understands me fine but real people leaving messages it is just laughable, but I do live in Tennessee so that may he part of it lol.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I had it ounce before but gave up real on it quick, but found that could be unintergrated fairly eaisly from the web site. Your not the first person to mention using it just for voice mail. How about for txt messaging though
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
I don't use it for txt. Pretty much voicemail only for me. It doesn't do Mms to gv number so that's a non starter for me.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I like GV for easy importing, editing, and backups of my contacts which is handy when flashing ROMs often. I also really like being able to block unwanted phone numbers. It has been handy sometimes to be able to send SMS from the web client, but I generally just use the stock messaging app on my phone. Since I'm using the integrated GV number, my SMS messages still show up in GV. The call screening is also nice when you want to know who is calling before actually accepting the call, though I disable it for known phone numbers. I like managing my contacts from my desktop where it is easy to setup groups and add photos. GV is great for making cheap international calls, too. I can't think of any lost functionality from the default Sprint services.
Sent from my Epic 4G using xda premium
I use gv as a secondary number.
Don't integrate with sprint, its pointless lol for all that you can just chill with your regular service lolol
Also android backs up contacts to your profile....
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
So sounds like the way to go is.use it for.voice mail but not.txt.as.it doesn't support mms anyhow. Though you can text from your pc

I have been using Google Voice since it came out, one of the original invitees, I did integrate with Sprint because I have been using my gv number for gosh probably about 5 years now. Started to use it on my archos 5it back in the day, and setup an soip so that it was basically a phone when I had wifi connection. It is nice to know that I will always have the same number, even if I don't feel like porting, or pick up a tablet with only wifi connectivity. Also, all my text messages are backed up for 5 years now, never loose one unless I delete it. Their visual voicemail is pretty meh, especially the transcription service...
I'm fully integrated, and I have no problems with it at all. I also love how I can run it on my Kindle Fire to check SMS and missed calls if my phone is upstairs.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Or any computer, say you leave your phone at home accidentally, you can still get your voicemails, and send sms...
i went full GV integration because I spend most of my day in zero cell signal coverage.. so it was a way for me to be able to send texts over wifi.. and who can't help but be amused by the voicemail transcriptions.. lol

One thing to be aware of, is that MMS is pretty half assed, in that I don't think you can send an MMS using your GV number unless you integrate. You cannot do an MMS directly from the app itself, you have to send it with messaging. If you get a MMS the image or video will be sent to your Gmail account.
I went for the full integration. To list what I call benefits:
-Better voice mail
-Able to respond to voice mails/texts from any computer including my HP Touchpad and prevents me from tapping away on my phone at work.
-Always have a place to keep track of all my conversations.
-Been enjoying the ability to have different voice mails messages for different contact groups
-Blocking of spam numbers and texts (Enjoy this immensely)
the day it can handle MMS properly, I'll be one happy camper.

Ok last questions, and I'm sure I should ask a sprint rep or something, but I garantee this is faster.
With sprint my cell to cell is free. Do I still get that with google voice. And if I'm in california and I call the inlaws in canada (on their cell no less). How am I billed. Or am i. Web site says one cent a minute, but if google voice is basicly voip then how are we billed. And of corse if this is voip, does that mean in a data dead spot I have no phone unless I un intergrate.
I beg for forgivness at my question that are probably searchable, but if mess with my phone to long my wife yells at me so quick answers instead of searching mean I get to sleep in the bed instead of the floor
Edit: as i read more in to this i basically find some web pages that rave about it and some that says there is a ton of hidden fees. The hidden fees com in to play that if you call mobile to mobile, but at some point it is routed through a land line (rare case) your using minutes and may not realize it. doesn't bother me at all. long distance call. i cant call the in laws unless in canada unless i put cash in my Google account.. i would never call any other country. the way its worded on the website is awkward. it might be saying its free. it might be saying its 1 cent a minute
Edit2: Under know issues from sprint. quote "Charged incorrectly for calls to Canada (Calls to Canada should be free while using Google Voice)
If you are being charged for calls to Canada please contact Sprint Customer Care to request a refund for these charges."
so its enough an issue that it showed up in the know issues web page

Google Voice is actually all I use. I had Sprint but I discontinued the service cause lack of funds (I'm a broke college student now, listening to REM & The Fray on my iPod headphones at coffee shops.) no, but really, there is literally Wifi everywhere I go, so that's my way of communication. Everything works. I think Voice is awesome. I recommend it. Just don't sync it with your Sprint number cause it'll do the "ring 3 times & send the caller to voicemail" thing. Last time, I checked, that could be fixed in the settings though.
Sent from my Épico Ranchero.
GV works just fine. If you integrate it, you won't even realize it's there. By default it will let you use the native messaging app, so you never even have to load Voice except to listen to voicemail (making it no better or worse than VVM). MMS works identically to regular Sprint messaging; I send and receive them all the time the usual way.
Once you get cozy with it, it's just a nice way to know your texts are automatically backed up, and it let's you set custom voicemail greets for each person/group in your contacts.
I haven't seen anything negative about it that wasn't fearmongering or a relic of a past issue raised by someone who didn't know what they were doing in the first place.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
The only negative is if you are like me and use a Google Voice number to set up a business line. Once you set up your Sprint number to use Google Voice as well they share the outgoing message on voicemail.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
I don't have a landline so I got a number and have it forward to mine and my wife's cell phones. If I want to make a call using it I just open up the voice app. I wild do the integration but google won't let me forward multiple numbers to one cell phone and using it as a "land line" number is first priority.

I sure did. It then says, "You've reached the voicemail system. If you have a mailbox on this system, press star...". I proceeded with star and entered my phone number and it says it's "invalid". Lost in terms of why it's asking that. I'm used to the general - setup your mailbox prompt. Some reason, it doesn't exist here.

I didn't have any problems with my voicemail. I've had T-Mobile for a while and all I did was get a new sim card and had it activated and my voicemail was working with no problems at all with my Nexus. Also I found this from T-Mobile support...
"To access the voicemail main menu, follow these steps:
Note: Make sure you are not roaming when attempting to set up voicemail for the first time.
1.Dial 123 or hold down the 1 key
2.Press Send.
3.Enter the last 4 digits of your mobile number as your voicemail password.
4.Follow the tutorial to set up your voicemail password and greeting.
Note:
•If you decline to set up the voicemail password and/or greeting, the tutorial plays each time until you set up both the password and greeting. Therefore, it is optimal to activate both features during initial setup."
Also if that doesn't work try calling your cell number from your land line and hit * when you get your voicemail if it lets you.
Are calls to T-Mobile voicemail count toward 100 minutes($30 plan) limit?
