Why is my internal storage so full? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

I'm not understanding why my internal storage is so full? Any ideas on how to talk down what is taking up 21 GB of "other" ?

You haven't downloaded a bunch of spotify playlists to offline by any chance?

I had this problem on my S5 when I use Wanam in Xposed to automatically record my phone calls. I wouldn't pay attention and the next thing I knew I had less than 500mb of space left in my internal storage. I would really lose storage when my calls were recorded in HD. Is it possible you have done something like that and forgot about it?
Also, while you're in the setting of your phone located in the first picture, you can select Other and it should pull up what files, and sort them by size (largest on top, smallest on bottom).

Ok so I found a folder called .estrongs that is 7.5GB. What is this?

Here is a screenshot

Ok, I just figured it out! Apparently ES File Explorer uses a recycle bin by default, which is .estrongs this keeps a bunch of crap you delete. I disabled this recycle bin function so hopefully this won't happen again!

WTF??!! Memory thing

The strange crap:
I take a photo, while I do it, somebody sends an sms.
I make it "save as read".
I finnish photo.
ALL OF THE sudden my internal STORAGE DROPS by
10MB!
I mean I have 10MB less....
And no, it's not the photos stored internally.....
Have you got any clue WHY??!!
How long was that SMS?
Haha, good one.
It was a new Murakami novel in sms form.....
But seriously I'm concerned!
What would instantly fill 10MB of storage?
Is there any log which would be so big??
cache? sms(lol)?, photo? Maybe just something in the background and it will come back later?
Well I also rebooted my X1 after that.
Didn't help.
Sms no as well as photo....
I will go through the folders...
Well, the Programs memory didn't change.
Just Storage.
Soooo strange.
Never happened before.
Listen I think it could be that when you have the camera turned on it caches everything if captures in a temporary folder even if you're not actually taking a picture. This can quickly be 10 MB. And it doesn't delete afterwards because ther SMS interrupts. So ceck your temporary folders and empty them. It sounds strange but it would be one possible explanation.
Maybe you default allocation unit size is like really high, the more stuff you put in your card, the more extra data it will take from your sd card. But the high the unit size the faster.
I am not tech geek so I am not sure if I am correct.

Lol you are correct, you mean Clustersize. But WTF 10 MB Cluster is impossible And I think he was talking about internal memory, not card storage.
Extreme thanks for replies!
Yes I will check my temp folders however I checked some of them and there are not many new files there, nothing big....
Of course I meant internal memory (not programs either).
I'll just add it never ever happened before.
You know, 10MB is ALOT.
Even the pics I took at this time were smaller in whole.
Really strange.
But by the way through walking through menus I moved 50MB
of preloaded films and music to sd card (I thought it was on card).
So I gained 50MB
GOT IT!
So,
MyDocuments/UAContents/MMSLog
a file:
mm1_wsp_wtp_2.log
9.8MB
Can I delete it?!
Lol.

Well just because I'm not aware what's that
I assume it's something like an invalid log?

Can't tell you this, but I've deleted UAContents on my phone Well, .log -> It's a log file. Why would you need a Logfile?

out of the blue..
Thx!!

What is UAContent? Can you please tell me why you said "can't tell you this" is it something illegal?

Something's not right here... what's using up all this space?

I deleted all my music, ISOs, and movies, because I was running out of space. After I deleted it all it showed:

Saying 6.48GB (13.2GB-6.72GB) is being used.
There's no way I have 6.5GB worth of stuff on my tablet... so I Ctrl+A, Right Click, Properties:

That shows 471MB... so um... what's going on with the rest of ~6GB?
*EDIT*
Went through settings and checked out the internal storage:

What?
That doesn't match my PC readings at all. And in fact, the math doesn't work either:
1.13 + 1.75 + 6.29 = 9.17GB
13.24GB - 9.17GB = 4.07GB.
Where's that 4.07GB, according to the tablet?

did you download the transformers movie? that uses up about 2gb... to delete i had to go into play movies app, manage space and delete from there

I checked just now, and nope.
I'm aware that the Nexus 7 uses the internal memory for apps as well, but there's no way I have ~6GB worth of apps installed... that must be several thousands of apps (note that app data are installed on the 'SD Card', so it shows up in the /data).
After your, 'CTRL+A' and right click properties how long did you wait to get your value?
Go away for 5mins leaving it running and you will probably find it has changed sum what, you find it does stick for 30secs or so at times.
I had to switch my Nexus off then back on before the storage space updated when id deleted a few things.

I don;t supposed you know what the free space was reported as when you first got your nexus 7 ? If there is something hinky, then it may have been misreporting fr omthe get go.
All I suggest is backup everything you want to keep and then factory reset your Android. Run through config and see what it reports used and free as. If it's still wrong, then return your tablet.
Oh - are you using a custom rom? If so, that could be the cause.

Yeah thats because the MediaStorage (or MediaStore or something like that) service / task takes a while to update sometimes. Waiting normally results in an update, but a reboot will always do the trick.
MTP is pretty buggy. It doesn't show every file or folder that's currently on the device through Windows Explorer. Hoping Google will acknowledge and fix it soon, or even better - bring back USB Mass Storage.
you will also find that windows does not indicate the free space on a drive gained by deleting files until the recycle bin has been emptied, this is because the files arent cleared from the drive until you do this. did you empty the bin before checking the free space?
MTP is buggy.
I recommend downloading ES File Explorer and add ur desktop to local server, and send the files through the network.
also, ESFE has an SD card analyst that can check what's using up ur space.
If you are rooted and have made any Clockworkmod backups, they take up a healthy amount of storage

Deleted movies do not release space, until a reboot. Is there any method to make it release space without a reboot? Now it makes the use very inconvenient. Thanks.

Internal storage issues showing space used that isnt

Basically when i use ES file explorer i have roughly 4gb of apps , system file, and other stuff but its showing an additional 14gb or so used. Is this a common problem? I didnt see anyone else ask about it and googled for an answer and found nothing. Im hoping its not damaged storage and a simple fix. Was planning on giving the new rom a spin as soon as enough folks were running it to know a baseline on fuctionality and common issues as i miss having a clean rom with root.
Isn't that the storage used by the OS?

I believe that is 8.68gb atleast on my phone and is accounted for. I dont have much in the way of apps and push most of my files, music, vids, pics and such to my external.

Storage space loss -10gb are just gone

Hello people.
I'm using LG G6 for 3 month now, started to drop some large video files on my internal storage and deleting them after watching.
Yesterday I've noticed that i have no free space left.
Run the diagnosis tool, no temp files, no nothing.
Built in storage app says i have 12g in other category, nothing so big in there.
Downloaded storage analyzer, says i have only 22g instead of 32.
Any ideas pleease?
Thanks in advance.

G6 have only 22GB of internal memory available, that's normal if you don't have the 64GB model.
You opened my eyes
Thanks mate!
You opened my eyes, the app said Android, i thought its the system folder, once you said its ok to have 22g, i understood that it's without system.
So went to android folder and found my lost 10.5g as some trashcan folder, weird why its not auto deleted or cleaned with temp files.
So now i have all the space back.
Thanks!

Internal almost Storage full. How to access more folders internal storage

I've been searching for this answer with no positive fix. I have around 20gigs being used up somewhare. This same thing happened on my old s7. I've cleaned cache in settings in phone and cleaned again useing cc cleaner. Nothing really changed. I need to find a app to look deeper into my internal storage whare the ghost data is being stored. I have tried useing total commander, disk info, disk usage, storage analyzer+disk useage, amaze file manager and x-plore but none of these seems to go deep enough into internal storage files/folders. Any one have a app or program they can reccomend. Or a known fix.
I'll post ss of what I'm looking at
Looks like I need 10 posts to post link of my screen shot links. Unless there's another way to upload here from phone gallery?

Do you have Whatsapp installed ?
Whatsapp stores all the media files in the internal storage. If you have Whatsapp installed, then you can try clearing the Whatsapp/Media folder in the internal storage
No I just use line app from time to time. Does it store similar to WhatsApp?
I was thinking root explorer might be able to find the hidden folders but I'm not rooted and would hate to run the risk or of bricking phone trying to root just to try out a app unless someone knows for sure root explorer would work. Or a similar app that does not need root access. But I'm kinda thinking I will need to be rooted to unlock the hidden folders to view them.
