Hi All,
First time poster with an unusual problem. I live in Australia and have a Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900F which is the European model. Up and till recently I was getting Telstra 4G reception. Now all of a sudden I'm only getting constant 3G reception. I have confirmed that there are no 4G network repair/maintenance/upgrade issues in my area. It was only in the last week that I noticed the constant 3G reception so I can't really pinpoint a specific incident or exact date as to when it actually started happening. Here is what I have tried thus far:
Phone restarts, changing network settings and switching to flight mode.
I've confirmed that the phone network is set to LTE/WCDMA/GSM (auto connect).
I have done numerous hard resets, cache wipes, Dalvik cache wipes, drive wipes, etc.
I have rooted and unrooted the phone numerous times.
I have tried several different stock and custom ROMS.
I have tried 4G SIM cards from other phones.
Tried numerous network switching apps.
NOTHING WORKS!
I always love to tinker with my phone so I'm always looking for ways to improve the phone's performance. It may be that an app (battery improvement/tweaking type apps) I installed somehow changed the network settings but I would have thought a million hard resets would have sorted that all out but apparently not. At the moment I'm running a rooted stock Android 5.1 ROM. I've tried stock Android 4 and 6 as well with no joy.
Here is the unusual thing. When I put in another 4G SIM card into my phone the network still remains on 3G but as soon as I put my SIM card back in 4G magically reappears. It's bizarre. At least I know my phone can still get 4G. You would think that would solve the problem but it doesn't. When I am in an area where the 4G signal is weak the stronger 3G signal kicks in as it is supposed to. When I get back into an area with strong 4G reception the phone remains stuck on 3G and no matter what I do it won't go back to 4G unless I go through the convoluted process described above.
I am all out of ideas. I think I have tried everything possible. I've trawled the web and I appear to be the only person in the world with this problem. I don't know if it is a software or hardware problem with my phone. My SIM card works in other 4G phones so I don't think it is part of the problem. At the end of the day it's not a big deal as 3G is fine but I'm just one of these people that has to fix a problem. Worst case scenario I'll probably upgrade the phone in the next 6 months.
Any suggestions or tips other than what I have listed above would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I just wanted to share my experience with some issues I had with my cell connectivity randomly dropping during the day and then randomly coming back. AT&T was no help what so ever and their only solution was to wipe my device (I'm rooted).
The Cause: Crappy LTE coverage in my area
I live between two towers that offer LTE coverage in my area, but not close enough to one or the other for them to connect. I solved the random drops by disabling LTE in the networks menu and then also going to *#*#INFO#*#* and using GSM only in that menu. I miss no more calls and everything works now. Apparently the phone was trying to get on LTE, succeeded in a handshake, and then didn't have enough signal to continue. It would then drop and try to reconnect several times before attempting to jump back on the GSM tower I can throw a rock and hit.
I can only hope AT&T gets their crap together and I hope this helps anyone with similar issues
Hi, I have D801,
I recently started to have this wierd problem, where I would lose all my signals completely, and comes back on, just without an LTE (regular 4G).
after this, if i go in to network settings, it is defaulted to WCDMA only or WCDMA preferred, instead of the ones with LTE in it.
no matter how many times I change this, it keeps going back.
I literally live right next to the tower.
I did not have this problem a day ago, I don't know what is causing this problem
i have flashed
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=49449195
this on my D801, and this is the only thing I did before having any issues.
or maybe it's something else.
APN setting looks normal etc.
can anyone tell me what to do ?
I tried going back to completely stock, and the problem is still there.
I used this method.

is there anything in this procedure that doesn't get restored to stock?
HELP!
I was at a location where the network reception was bad and I lost signal. My phone has not been having network signal since then. Signal strength 0.
this phone has started playing up, 4G wont connect at all and 3G is constantly changing between H and H+. Phone calls dropping and battery draining fast.
Have tried factory reset
flashing older Samsung firmware
Nothing is making a difference. Tried my SIM in another phone and it instantly connects to 4g.
This only started about two weeks ago.
Any one else have this issue? i'm in the uk on the 3 network.
UPDATE: it appears the 4G radio is faulty - setting it to 3g only solves the issues.
UPDATE : I'm so gutted that this phone 4g/3G is ****. Love the phone but loads of people and reviews suggesting 4g/3G issues with this phone and high number of call drops. I did a test today, I put my sim in an iPhone 6 and instantly connected to 4g and speed test was through the roof peaking at 38mb. Put the sim back into the s6 edge plus and only connects to 3G. But unable to browse the Internet. This confirms my fears that the 4g chipset/antenna are ****. In this phone. Which is a real shame as the phone is my favorite ever. Going to get an iPhone now. Connectivity is the most important thing and I can't be dealing with this crap from such an expensive phone. Shame on you Samsung.

I have the exact trouble as yours whichs about constantly changing between the H and H+. (4G is not matter, its new around here). When it turns on H, doesnt connect any site and application which need data connection. But H+ is doing normal. I bought an unlimited data package is provided for up limit 7.2Mbps. Dug something and saw that HSDPA(H) technology's up limit is 7.2 for our carrier. Then bought limited turbo data package(shows as up limit 43Mbps) but still changing H and H+ Thats not such for current device. It was in such an annoying situation since H+ available to connect. Tried to force use H+ but no luck. Sorry for long article and bad grammar. Just saying. Thanks.

Been doing a lot of research and it appears to me that this phone is crap at holding 4g/3G signals. I think this is a hardware/design fault. Most people won't release this until they test this on an iPhone in the same location and see the huge difference. Can't believe Samsung would release a huge pile of crap.

Couldn't agree more...
I don't have this problem mine is actually reverse. I have better signal and faster Internet than my Samsung s5
Pretty self-explanatory from the title, unlocked 6T with Oxygen 9.0 .5, constantly losing data signal, sometimes reconnecting in 5 or 10 seconds, sometimes taking longer or one time even requiring a reboot. Anybody noticed this, known issue?
Edit: on T-Mobile with T-Mobile SIM, APN looks all good, it auto-loads when you put the Sim in.
I've only seen my OP6T (unlocked) lose TMo signal once. It was when I was using the Switch app to migrate apps/data from my Pixel 2 XL. I had to reboot in order to get it to reconnect. But that was on 9.0.4. No issues since that one time and no issues on 9.0.5.

Pretty much what this guy said. I'm also on T-Mobile. Used phone out and about today after update works fine.
Check your APNs and worse can just network reset.
Thanks to both of you, I did the network reset to default so I will see if that helps. Thanks again. The APN seems to Auto load when I pop in my T-Mobile SIM, so it's kind of greyed out but the settings look fine from what I remember of the T-Mobile APN.
Update: tried multiple Network resets, the issue persists. I believe my phone is going back, it's happening every 5 to 10 minutes when I'm using the phone.
I'm still getting lots of signal drops even though I've tried so many different things. The LTE Discovery app seems to be showing that I'm usually on t-mobile LTE band 4, but when the connection drops out and reconnects after 5 seconds or so, then I'm on band 2. So it's been suggested that it might be network congestion with all the new subscribers. But this doesn't seem to happen on my T-Mobile branded V30, or at least I haven't noticed it or it doesn't show in the status bar icon. So, I still don't know whether to keep the phone but chances are I guess I will.
Edit: this post failed because of a signal drop and I had to wait 15 seconds before I could get it to go through.
It's all too frequently dropping 4G or LTE connection when on the move. It's showing a connection, good strength too, but no data connection working. Often needing an airplane mode toggle or reboot to get online again.
5G is disabled as I'm nowhere near a 5G area.
Anyone got any ideas? Different firmware or something?
I'm starting to regret moving away from the SD note 10 plus I had. That phone was rock solid.

I read that some people have issues with connection with some ISP providers. Try putting it on 3G and see if it works fine then. If it does then ISP has either sn issue with 4G network or phone needs a firmware fix to solve 4G connection issue if this isn't a hardware problem thought. Since for me it works fine here and my 4G shows all time and I even have 4G+ as status without an issue.
try disabling WiFi calling that helped in my case
Tried all that. Went into a town and it didn't again.. Had to force it onto 4g to get a connection.

Haven't had any issues myself, on giffgaff. Tried O2 briefly, it seemed okay too.

Give this app a try, might help fixing it to one band
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ray.samsungbandselection
Yes u have that thanks. It seems to be band switching that's the problem. Or is it possible my carrier has live but unused bands that the phone is locking into? So when I travel I find myself with a dead data connection?
