Why the Note 4 is King - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 General

A friend of mine asked yesterday which phone I think he should upgrade to from the Note 3. Despite all of the newer editions from LG, HTC, and Samsung, I still feel that for power users the Note 4 is hands down the best Android phone ever made for Verizon.
The list of benefits for the Note 4 is plethora: Root. Unlock Bootloader. Replaceable battery. SD card support. MHL. USB on-the-go. IR blaster. Great ROM support up to MM. S-pen.Wireless charging option. Gorgeous screen. Incredibly durable build quality.
Unless I am mistaken, this combination of benefits is not available on any other Verizon phone.

Don't for get about the nexus 6. In my opinion that's the only device that can even come close to the newly rooted and BL unlockable N4! I had a nexus 6 and it's a bad ass device and fast as hell all around great phone. Only thing I didn't like was the N6 didn't have SD card slot, and N6 doesn't have type C plug, like the rest of the devices have. I only got the nexus 6 because I wanted root and the option to BL/unlock. Not being able to do that to the N4 at the time is what kept me away from it. Now I have the LG v10 (VZW) it's rooted but in my opinion that's all it's ever gonna get and I'm still on 5.1. MM doesn't have root yet for v10. I want a note 4 really really bad.

I had the v10. Nice phone. As is the G5. The ability to "learn" IR codes is great with LG.
I use the s-pen far too often, though. I sold it and got developers N4.
Retail N4 are quite cheap... temp root while unlocking bootloader is a pain but the result is fantastic!

I just recently had a warranty exchange and they offered me anything from a note 5 down and I had to go for the N4. With the bl unlocked, this is the device to have. I only wish more developers would return. Let's face it, the N5 wasn't a big improvement and only recently got root. Roms may be a long time coming. The n7 is right around the corner and rooting that will probably take a year or better. Roms are anyone's guess. Now I do want the n7 but only with root and roms. The N4 had both already and room to grow.

The few ROMS we have are quite good. I still use Jasmin and love it. CM13 coming along nicely.

I wouldnt say it's King of the Hill anymore but it's still better than 90% of all smartphones. The simple fact that it has a removable battery AND expandable storage is a rare and desirable combination.

I sold my note 4 DE before the retail was unlocked and tried the nexus 6p with project fi, and while the 6p is great, fi sucked compared to the verizon MVNO for coverage. Since the 6p doesn't have two radios, I couldn't get simultaneous voice and data using the vzw mvno on the 6p, so I have purchased a note 4 retail and converted it to DE and I'm a happy camper again

Truth is retail DE is better than true DE. You don't get the brightness slider and mic issues.

Root, unlocked bootloader, SD, battery, IR blaster, MHL video out, USB-OTG... can you show me what else offers that?

I just bought and unlocked bootloader on 2 note 4s and I am thinking I will agree that this will be the best because of its versatility for a long time. U forgot it also has quick charge and from what I've read works with the smart dock (which is great on its own). I'm going to sell one of them. I'm thinking it'll be worth at least 50-100 more on swappa work the unlocked bootloader. What do u think?

Quick charge and media dock for sure work. I use them often. Another unmentioned perk is the audio latency that allows the note 4 to be used with mics and guitar pickups. Never really advertised but great nonetheless.
Most ppl on swappa dont care about BL unlock...

Compared to the hardware specs of most of the recent flagships, the Note 4 holds up well.
Besides, mine is paid for.

I upgraded from the Note 2.
Back in the day I pre-ordered three note 4's One DE and two Retails. I could never really sync them together because they were on different ROMs. Now that the retail is rooted I can clone them with TWRP so I always have a up and running back- up. I use them for business and security so a replaceable battery is essential. I can't be tied down to a battery charger. I go through three to five batteries every day. We need to erect a statue to beaups for unlocking the bootloader of the Verizon Note 4. He is almost like a god. Thanks a million.

nothing wrong with my DE it is in mint condition. The screen brightness is week due to two years of use. One of my Retails is corrupted it lags. I rooted with Knox Security active and it got f-ed up but it's under Samsung factory warranty so I need to figure out how to make a claim.

Likely you just need a different kernal. Multisystem kernel fixed lagging for me.

Take the plunge at least update your bootloader to BPA lollipop bootloader. Look up a YouTube video on how unlock the phone after you flash the retail firmware to get fimiliar with what you have to do. I had an issue with the first attempt after I rooted that it would bootloop. It required another flash of the retail firmware and I was good. I'm updated to cpd1 mm bootloader. I'm gonna find some good s7 ports eventually to work for our phone. I got you guys.

I did finally take the plunge and convert my DE into a retail.
With the coming and explosive goings of the Note 7, and the flop that was the Note 5, I still hold that the Note 4 is the King of Verizon Android phones.
With CM nougat builds, and great 6.0.1 Roms, the Note 4 offers more than any other phone on the market.
LG v20 is the only thing that comes close, but the lack of S-pen is a deal killer.
Long live the Note 4!!

Warning To Developer Edition Owner

With the arrival of a new "batch" of Developer Edition Note 4s delivered in the past couple days and the ones scheduled for delivery in the coming days, the opportunity for a proud owner of one of these devices to lock their bootloader inadvertedly is high. I know the following warnings/information can be found in a number of different threads, but you have to look for them to find them. So here's several do's and don'ts for new Developer Edition Note 4s:
WARNING: MAKE SURE REACTIVATION LOCK IS NOT SELECTED UNDER YOU SECURITY SETTINGS IF YOU PLAN ON INSTALLING TWRP AND ROOT!!!
1) Never take an OTA update from Verizon. Samsung has never updated the firmware on their Developer Edition devices...never. The chance that Samsung will change their policy for the Note 4 is slim to none. Taking an OTA update will most likely lock your bootloader. Yes, if you have TWRP installed and rooted the update should fail if it automatically downloads and tries to self-install. The point is, when notified that there is a OTA update, don't take it.
2) Never flash a firmware file unless you know it has been approved and tested for the Developer Edition. Finding firmware for the Retail version of the Note is easy, finding firmware for the Developer Edition is, at this point in time, impossible. If you flash Retail firmware on your Developer Edition you will lock your bootloader.
3) There is only one ROM available and safe to flash for the Verizon Note 4 Developer Edition...one. That ROM can be found in the Android Development Section below. Flashing a ROM developed for a different carriers device usually produces less than desired results, don't do it.
4) Security Policy updates from the Play Store are safe to install if you want to, but are not necessary. Security updates from Verizon should be avoided.
I hope this helps some new Developer Edition users avoid a costly mistake. We already know of two Note 4 Developer Edition owners that have flashed Retail firmware and now have an expensive Retail model of the Note 4.

Good advice...although I would have hoped that people buying a DE would know better.
Slight update to point 3...FireKAT is coming to VZW. The developer is rebasing it for VZW and said it would be available by the end of the weekend. Be sure to thank and/or donate to him if anyone uses it as he may be our best path to Lollipop when it comes out for the Note 4.
I've heard good things about FireKat, can't wait to try it.
Is there a thread somewhere to monitor FireKAT to Verizon progress?
What is even the point of the dev edition then for the average XDA'er? Having an unlocked bootloaders main benefit is the ability to flash other custom roms. However, most phones with locked bootloaders usually use safestrap, but since the amount of people who own the dev edition is relatively small, it doesn't seem that beneficial. I debated for a long time getting a note 3 DE but decided against it. It seemed overall that it was a hassle and I refrained. The only reason I bought the N4 is simply I had an upgrade available and if I didn't, probably would have passed on that too. This way I can keep rotating my 4 lines, 1 with ULD, to get 2 upgrades per year?

There are periodic references to it in the TMO N4 dev thread and I exchanged a couple of PMs with the dev related to another topic but it came up ...it will happen, we just need to be patient.
Update: FireKat should be available in a couple days per the dev. When it drops be sure to support him if you flash it.

Yes, there aren't many (only one right now) ROMs available for the Note 4 Developer Edition. But, there are plenty of apps that require root that enable the user to customize, improve performance, improve battery life and perform functions that you can't do on a retail version. That is the primary reason I choose a Developer Edition. Another factor is the fact that I hate SafeStrap. So, if I was interested in flashing customized ROMs I don't want to do it with SafeStrap (that's assuming they ever get root for the retail version and if a version of SafeStrap comes available). Life is full of choices, you made yours and I made mine for different reasons. It's all good.

If root is ever achieved, many of the things mentioned can be done too.
But yeah, I never really liked SS either, just saying that it is an option, but my main point I guess is that the DE sort of splits the community a bit. Many people don't want to lose their UDP so buy unsubsidized anyways so the DE isn't a bad option. However, it just seems like these kind of things cause a lack of dev on one side or the other which is bad for the N4 community as a whole. That's what I was really getting at.
Yeah, I just bought an N4 actually though and am sort of let down this time coming from my N2. MW and the S-Pen I never really utilized with the N2 since I switched to an AOSP based rom as soon as they became available, but halo and floating window were nice too.
The only three features that really stand out to me are the camera, the display, and the fingerprint scanner.

You are correct, if root is achieved many of the things I pointed out can be achieved. I also agree that two different versions of one phone can split the community. But in today's environment, it is getting harder and harder to even get root much less unlock bootloaders or get a version of SafeSTrap that will work. If that remains the status quo then I'm glad the development community at least has the Developer Edition to work on. I'm not a crack flasher but I do like the ability to run the five or six apps that I like that require root and have the option to flash a custom ROM if I want. Plus, I really like the ability to create my own debloated ROM by getting rid of all the Verizon, Samsung and even some of the Google crap they put on our phones. I can cut the size of the stock ROM by almost 50% by debloating and have all the functionality I want or use. It makes a noticeable difference in the speed and smoothness of the phone's functions and battery life. I guess I just hate to be like the iPhone community that is locked into what ever Apple thinks we need or want, LOL. But, that "freedom" is getting harder and harder to come by.
Thanks for the heads up op.

I'm in a similar boat myself, but the thing is I have 5 lines I can manipulate my upgrades with so buying subsidized is more of a benefit for me with all the current workarounds than shelling out 700. When I was going to get the N3, I xfer my upgrade and sold my note 3 retail to get the DE, but decided last minute not to do it. For some reason, the aesthetics of the N3 did not seem that appealing but the N4 is beautiful.
But yeah, I just think it is a sad state we are stuck in with VZW. The service is good, but the company is definitely somewhat crooked and incompetent. I had TMob, AT&T before, but the service and speeds never compared to what I got in my area with VZW. That's why I really want the N6 if there is an unlocked bootloader, as an added bonus the phones all seem to be the same SKU which means the user base and dev base will be huge.
And yes, 100% agree, not even having root now is very unappealing for no TiBU, and quite a few other apps I constantly use that require root, Repetitouch for example, bunch of xposed mods, and no custom DPI. I seriously cannot even think about using Chrome without adjustable DPI or the ability to block permissions.
Agreed again, iDevices main downfall is they didn't license out their OS. I don't have the numbers, but I know SS captured a big amount of their market, but if you add in the other Android phones I don't think iOS even comes close. Which was the only reason I ever had an iDevice, but I really missed the level of customization and that was coming from the OG Droid, haha.
So right now I am sort of stuck in this spot, either keep the N4, return it for an N6 when it comes to VZW or sell the N4 and get the device from the play store. From what i've played around with, the camera, display, and the fingerprint scanner make it a hard decision. Also I am so used to soft keys rather than capacitive buttons, feel like that eats up a lot of screen real estate. But I am pretty sure I am going to get the N6 and move away from SS, which is quite sad because I like their peripherals and overall devices.
To be honest I don't know why everyone is so eager to jump ship to the Developer Edition note 4 when there is absolutely no development going on right now for it.
The vast majority of Galaxy Note 4 users are retail. Unless a vast majority of Developer Edition Phones are bought by the public I just don't know how there will be development for the device since there is no popularity. (ie no audience to develop for)
I mean sure.... you get root. You can debloat a little here and there but what matters most is getting your favorite rom that you want ported to your device.
Other than that. Developer edition doesn't look like a hoot right now, imo =/

you dont know that. tmobile kernels work fine. and as far as firekat coming it will be here tomorrow or later this week i have talked to dev about it already.
also stock rom debloated with tweaks and a kernel you dont need much more right now honestly. and i can tell you this GOOD LUCK with rooting the retail and you will NEVER get an unlocked bootloader

Hard to find... Really, hard to find.
It sort of pains me to jump boat though, as i've always had Samsung since a few years ago. Never really had TW on there for that long
And I can appreciate your sentiments too because a lot of the reasons you mentioned are some of the reasons I want to stick with the N4. There are way too many variables now in picking a phone IMO.

I'm on my 3rd rooted device and yet to install a custom rom. I simply want root access, and the ability to have my phone be MINE! I don't want BS apps on my phone. I don't want the factory browser to have locked bookmarks. I don't want a camera telling me I can't use flash when I'm at 12% battery life.

Hi,
Besides the 3 things you found better than the N2, what about cell and wifi reception, is it better when compared to the N2?
Thank you,

Cell reception is definitely better John.
WiFi is the same. I've never had a bad experience with WiFi.
My N2 for some reason lately was capped at around 80kb/s-100kb/s and I can't seem to get much higher than that. When I first got the phone it was 300+ almost all the time, but that could be because LTE wasn't as big back then or the updates they have done henceforht.
EDIT: When I say better, I mean a lot better. I sit in the same spot at my desk and with my N2 I was always constantly having to stand up to send a text or make a call. This phone I can do it practically while laying on the ground. So reception has improved drastically for me.

Dude you miss the whole point of a DE Note 4, FREEDOM!!!!
I had a retail Note 4 before I got he DE. With the retail I felt trap, almost choking to a point. I couldn't immerse my self with it, and NOT HAVING Viper4Android was a NO NO. You have to hear the Note 4 with V4A with a pair of Sony MDR-1RTBT MK2. Coming from flashing almost a ROM per week on my note 3 and ending up with stock debloated TW version didn't feel bad at all and this where I'm at with the N4. I'm about to Flash AMSPilot debloated now and so far I'm good until FireKat.

Some Thoughts As The Note 3 Becomes Less Relevant

Hello, my name is Firefishe.
I've had my N900A Note 3 since early 2012. Since that time, I've been watching these forums, and the developer community in general, to see what might happen given time for this handset, in terms of customization.
These are key areas for me:
1. Unlocked Bootloader by now
2. Elimination of Knox Corporate Security software for non-corporate users, meaning, most of us.
3. Active ROM Development by the community for this handset. AOSP, here, not just TouchWiz.
Because this is an old handset by technological standards now, I would take the line that no one really gives a flying frack about the bootloader on this thing.
However, even if this is so, why can't I find any relevant information on this one subject: "N900A Bootloader Unlocking."
That subject, when searched, seems to do nothing but bring up ancient hits that have nothing of value, speculation, and other tripe.
I, for one, want to experiment. However, I can't afford the full price of a Nexus 5 or I would have purchased one long ago. I have to buy on contract, and AT&T has the best coverage in my area.
Also, I enjoy my S Pen. (Old Palm Pilot user here.)
So I'm stuck.
Or am I?
Part of the joy of electronics use is making the most if older-but-still-useful hardware. The Note 3 is still a quad core. It handles any game or program I want to use just fine, with no problems.
Is there no one who is working on this device, anymore?
Does any dev on this site have any insight that can be provided as to why this device's bootloader hasn't been unlocked, yet?
Anyway, I'd like to know if there is any private advancement being done on this subject, and would like a private email from anyone who cares to respond.
<firefishe AT Gmail DOT com>
I'm planning on having this handset for some time yet, and long to see Paranoid Android running on it.
If anyone can assist me with this, it would be greatly appreciated.
Best Regards,
-Firefishe
When I bought my Note 3 this June, I was coming from the Galaxy S3, which I had long ago rooted, unlocked, and was running Cyanogenmod on. Little did I know that unlocking the bootloader was not a common thing. And it seems to be becoming less common.
Imagine my surprise when I got home with my new Note 3 and went to the Cyanogenmod site to download and install. I learned a lot in the next few days about bootloaders, Knox, etc. I also learned that the phone I had just entered a two-year contract with was not what I wanted. At least not software wise.
Every day I do a search for Android Unlock Bootloader and check the news of the last 24 hours, hoping for some glitter of hope. I see newer phones, like the LG G3 and Nexus 6, offering bootlader unlocking. I see companies working hard to give their customers what they want - a phone that they can do anything with. And I see Samsung and AT&T doing the opposite - pushing more secure, unbreakable software and bloat out, usually months after their competitors have brought the latest Android OS to their flagship devices.
I did catch a glimpse of hope with Towelroot, and now my phone is rooted. Back in August I caught another glimpse of hope when Dan Rosenberg spoke at the Blackhat conference, saying that any Android bootlader could be unlocked thanks to a security exploit in Snapdragon processors. That hope was quickly diminished by Dan himself when he said not on the Note 3, and Qualcomm said they already patched the exploit.
And just last month I learned of Safestrap and the many ROMs offered as an alternative. I am now running my Bloat 3 on @bri315317 's fantastic Dynamic Rom Xtreme. This is about as close to an unlocked AOSP experience as you can get on the Note 3.
But still every day I search news for any sign of an unlocked bootlader for my phone. Older phones are being exploited. Newer phone as well, usually by the phone makers themselves. But still AT&T and Samsung refuse to give their customers what they want. Complete use of a product that we bought.
So this will be my last Samsung phone. Had I been a bit more patient I would have bought a Nexus 6. For now I have a year and a half to go with my Samsung and AT&T locked device. At least there is a viable alternative with Safestrap and ROM makers like Brian et al.
I sold mine yesterday for "pennies". AT&T Note 3 is the working "brick" phone w/o unlock bootloader. It's a very nice but completely useless for XDA folks. Back to my T-M Galaxy s2 for now. Just wondering what to buy next.

Lol gave up note 3 for s2. I wouldn't do that I'm thinking about getting an Optimus G, even to this day excellent development, but I probably wouldn't sell the note 3 yet tho. I would Odin it back to stock and use the Optimus G for aosp and stuff
We have roms. And KitKat. I'm fine with my note 3 and my note 4 Rom. If u don't know by now, there's a thread in Q&A about flashing other carrier roms. I actually don't mind using Safe strap, it's safer and works fine for my flashing habit. I love my Note 3, and I feel its still one of the best around!
The note 3 came out September of 2013....

@Firefishe, are you running the stock ROM or have you flashed one of the custom ROMs?
Loved this phone, but with the random reboots, ****ty customer service, locked bootloader and bloat I'll never buy another Samsung or AT&T device again. Count on that.
This is completely speculation but I think this is going to happen down the road. There will come a time where companies will start to lock ALL their bootloaders. Some XDA users will exploit a few workarounds and when they do, those companies will try and "buy them off". If it happens it will take away the "rebels" and add to their "army" and after a while some of the greats on XDA will be working against XDA because of all the money the corporate companies will offer them. Don't get me wrong, there will be some absolute rebels that won't "defect" but at the end of the day it's all about money and trust me if a company is offering you 75 to 100k+ to "defect"and make their security software stronger. It's hard to turn down money of that nature. Just saying though

They aren't rebels and we aren't the rebellion.
Of course the higher end devs here will tend to end up in programming jobs that directly relate. Hashcode and geohotz are two amazing examples of that.
And now that it is becoming harder and harder to hack some of these devices a few devs can only justify that time with a paycheck. After all if it took 4 guys 4 hours a night for 4 months at what their pay rate of say $40 an hour you're looking at a $76,800 project.
In the end you are right, we will wind up being mostly safestrap and root for the locked devices and full Roms for the specialty devices.

Exactly.......... whatever he bought in January 2012 must have been a Note since the even the Note 2 was not out before September/October 2012 (I think). I love the Note 3 and with Safestrap and Odin, we can choose between several Kitkat NC2 (4.4.2) roms and use NJ5 (4.4.4) roms including those running Note 4 apps. I was tempted to get the Note 4 but after hearing about the advance specs of the Note 5 (like over 700 ppi display and 4 gigs of ram among other enticing specs). I think I can wait until next September.!
There are always will be competition between amateurs and pros. This forum is the one of the prove. Besides that there is a plenty ambitions ppl who do this just because they like and can. Another thing the companies always are looking for a new recruits to replace a current staff (just cheaper for the business). And don't forget about a competition between big (and small) brands. They will do everything to survive.
Just mine 2c.

I really like a NOTE 3 just not AT&T brand. And it was kinda useless for me and I barely used it.
I wanted to buy NOTE 4 from T-MOBILE but they didn't want to sell it to me because I'm on prepaid.
I think that as long as there is a community of people looking to fully own their device there will be someone willing to give them what they want.
Some companies could create a brand around a community of smartphone users that really want to own their device and modify it as they wish.
I think the Nexus line is one such example.
If there is demand for something someone, somewhere will provide it.
Are there any business type people here? Anyone that would know or want to start a start up that offers complete freedom to own their device? Sometimes you have to be the change you want to see.
Already been done. It is called one plus one.

Why do you folks sound so desperate? I'm gonna play you some of my sad banjo music. Lmao [emoji23]
There will ALWAYS be root and ROMs. Making it sound like a battle. Rebels and armies and all that. There is always nexus devices and t-mobile and international phones and other options. Cyanogenmod is coming along the way now and more companies are going to throw it on their devices. Start with oneplus one and we will see more. Just chill out and enjoy safestrap and whatever rom you got running at the moment. You got a device that is not really that far from the note 4, only a few little differences that are not that big of a deal. I mean, I know people that are still running S2 and even older devices just fine. I love my note 3 and won't change it for a while. I AM able to buy the note 4 or any other "flagship" out there, but I really see no point in that. 1080p display with quad core processor and you name it.

If you're paying full price and the local dealer won't sell it to you, try another store or buy it off Amazon.
Local dealers, in my experience, aren't always the brightest of beings.

The Year 2016.. Are You Kool With Your Current Device?

Hello All..
Can you believe 2016 is here..
My Note 4 running the Rapture ROM is ( and will continue to be.. ) Heaven On Earth for me as far as, my needs in a Cellular Device are concerned..
But.. what about you? does the S7 with it's possible return to having a Micro-SD Card slot and the incredible Snapdragon 820 CPU Engine give you justification to invest another $700.00 - $800.00 into the Latest & Greatest?
Have Mid-Level devices reached a point that , they have enough horsepower to suit your needs?
For You.. Has your Galaxy Note 4 run it's course?

I'm good with my note 3 and 4 atm, note 3 on darth stalker and note 4 on kyubi rom dx heavy debloat. I used to go years in between devices before the note line became popular, now with the note 6s sure return to sdcard I'll most likely support it when it releases.

honestly yes I enjoy my note 4 and the DOK2 firmware has made my T3 feel much better than DOG did. I am planning to keep it until dev stops for it. I am starting to worry about my tablet Z though it is getting real slow after its update to 5.1.1
as far as the S7 goes no.. TBH and I cant believe I am saying this but until companies like Sammy and Sony and HTC provide updates for devices as long as that A company it will be hard for me to justify spending that much on a device.
Thankfully the devs keep many devices alive but still manufactures should in a sense stand behind there products and make people want to say YES my next device will be from X I have had great experience with them. My original T got the 5.0.1 update and it turned into a turd. That made me very concerned for the future of our phone, thankfully DOK2 which should have been here sooner did improve things for everyone on T and T3 from what I have gathered so far
No I hate android but I hate OS X more. I wish I would have taken more coding classes when I was younger so I could develop Windows Phone Apps. I LOVE the WP system and just how they designed everything.
If I didnt have a side job that required me to use Android or OS X I wold be rockin the WP.
No no no. This piece of garbage is last Samsung bloat ware I will own. Vanilla Android is the answer for me from now on. I know I know, root, de bloat and custom rom and it's great. No it isn't. Stop fooling yourselves. Samsung is as bad as Apple. Give me my pure Android please.
Yes
If there is no microSD in the next Note, which there probably won't be, then I'll be moving on to a larger screen phone. Huawei has been showing off their 6" Mate 8 which should be announced at CES in a couple of weeks, and it looks good. They seem to making an effort to try and get their products into the US, and their recent products have been well designed.

I will be going back to nexus. Got the note 4 on a whim, its a good phone for normal people. But I regret getting it. I hate how Samsung makes 8 versions of the same phone. Development it always so fragmented.

You see, I was once young and foolish. just kidding. To each their own I guess and you and your kind are probably why these manufacturers keep pumping bloat ware ridden phones every other month. I don't look for an operating system to excite me. Give me an OS that runs smoothly, conserves power, and is easily upgradeable, let me be in charge of excitement. I will make it exciting.
Im good on stock 5.0.1 COG2 rooted and debloated running good and no issues. Wanted to try DOK2 but seems like to many issues and root is not up to par in my opinion..Happy New Year
Yeah I plan on staying with my note 4. I like my IR blaster for 1. Also the time are cool my 128 gb sd. And basically I'm not that impressed with the new devices out there . I also see so many new cases out there to tally change the look of my device. . So all I'm getting is the gear S that's al I need .
Yep until note 6 comes out with sd card slot. If not i am going elsewhere.

I am for two reasons: 1. Lack of better options, and 2. I just got a warranty replacement this past week and being more selective about the apps I install, running a new ROM, a fresh battery and my trusty 128 GB micro SD have increased my overall opinion of the device.
It is a bit disappointing that there's still no competition for the N4 with a micro SD and removable battery (well, arguably the LG V10 I suppose) at this point, but I'm pretty happy with the refurb N4 that I just received.
The Note 5 failure was helpful to my perspective. Last month, my wife took over my Note 4 and I could have bought anything I wanted- I looked hard and long, and bought another Note 4.
I think we've hit a wall. I don't see another smartphone on the horizon worth diving into my wallet for. The only thing that will perk my interest is a screen over 6 inches on a unit with a removable battery and SD options.
Still loving my Note 4, and still nothing that entices me to upgrade. There's a rumor of a 6 inch variant of the S7. If that happens, I think the Note 6 would also be 6". That would be nice, but I'm not sure it's enough to make me want to upgrade. These phones are expensive, so an upgrade has to have substantial improvements. My Note 4 still has a long life ahead of it I think.
Right now I'm running [DOK2] TEKXodus HYBRID N4 URv5 12/03 NOTE5/EDGE/S6/N4 LOLLIPOP 5.1.1 > TEKHDway! Rom and I'm loving it. Best Rom for the Note 4 910t I would say (In My Opinion).

Is the Note 4 the last great dev friendly Samsung phone for the near future?

The S7 and S7 edge has a locked bootloader for US versions, and conceivably the same for the upcoming Note 6. S6, S6 edge, note 5 have no removable storage/batteries.
Awesome development on the Note 4 here, and if we possibly get Android N, I can't see myself leaving the Note 4 for a long time.
Btw, seems like LG G5 has an unlockable bootloader but it's not possible to load a custom recovery. Not good. Seems like preventing customization is becoming a trend with the newer US phones. Of course there's still the Nexus but the hardware is only ok IMHO
I'm actively looking for a dual OS phone, contract ends Cyber Monday so I got some time. so far the only decent one I've seen is the Meizu Pro 5 n can't remember exactly why but something about it kept me looking elsewhere lol
I'm keeping both of my note 4's until i know for sure if the N6 bootloader is locked or not. I plan to stay on the N4 and continuing making roms as long as I can and until I have to upgrade my phone due to it being too outdated.

i have been pondering this question since first getting the note 4 . I love everything about it, but after lollipop caused touch screen issues and battery discharge, i thought i might have to go all in for something else- tried the G4 which was def a beast but it cant stand up to this powerhouse and with marsh 6.0 falling from the heavens... everything has been fixed, including the lack of response in the screen(entire top/left corner). if i have to i will buy note 4 replacements until the software starts falling short
I have a good idea. For those of us who want to stick with the N4 due to the locked bootloaders on the new devices, just put insurance on your line and keep using the N4. By the time your N4 finally dies or if you lose or break it, you can get a insurance replacement and most likely will be given a N5 or whichever device is comparable and available at the time. Most likely there won't be anymore refurbished N4's by then. The deductable is still cheaper than the 2-year new contract prices of new high-end smartphones and cheaper than paying out installments for those who do that. So it will all work out for the better if you just wait it out and see how devices & bootloaders turn out.

A replaceable batter is a must! On heavy use days I have to swap out batteries by mid-afternoon. Not to mention the fact that by the end of year one your original battery doesn't last as long as it used to. I've always had to get a new battery or two before needing a new phone.

I agree with you, a few months ago I upgraded from my Note 2 to the Note 4 and other than missing the dual modem (LTE while using calls), this is the best Android phone I have had. I plan to stick with it until theres no life left as I cant stand the stock OS's (other than the ones you touch) so I cant see myself ever using a stock phone.
If they begin to lock the bootloaders everywhere, this will royally suck for Android. The best thing about Android is the freedom so I hope these asshole manufacturers and carriers listen to their customers before they are no longer customers.
The bootloaders can be unlocked with a little time and effort. However, there is only a very small number of people with the skills to to it. My advice would be to research these talented people and support their efforts in advance

Long story short, I updated my old note 4 from OB7 five weeks ago to marshmallow, and hated it. My replacement note 4 from Sprint had marshmallow on it, so went to 5.1.1 OG5, due to that being all I could downgrade to, and hated it as well.
After 5 weeks of being miserable, I finally made it back to OB7 via a custom rom and OB7 modem, but still on OG5 bootloader.
So, due to me not liking either 5.1.1 or 6.0.1, I will keep my note 4 until I am forced off of it, due to network changes. I will then migrate to Apple.
I didn't like the last two versions of android, so I have zero faith in Android N and being able to root a sprint note 6.

What is the Future of this phone as of now ?

I've had this phone about 3 months now and thought it was going to be good in the dev community but as im seeing now it seems all dev for this phone is dead or dying, so what hope is there that we will have any roms or new mods for this phone?Yes i understand about the locked bootloader but i was looking at the note 7 forum and they have roms for there phone and the note 7 came out after the 7 edge? i would just like to know in everyone's opinion should we be waiting and hoping for someone to break the codes and unlock our phones true potential or just shut my mouth and sit back and take what i've got and be happy with it. Don't get me wrong i commend the Echoe rom team and all the hard work they did for us and that should not be overlooked. All im saying is what do we need to get this phone poppin like all the other phones ?
Thanks
A New S7 Edge Owner
I guess all we could do is hang on to this one and trade it in or sell it when the S8 comes out and maybe we won't get screwed on the next model.
I was thinking about trading it for one of the new Google Pixel XL phones, but they aren't going to have an SD slot. I think I am still going to trade it for something else though... having a hard time figuring out what I want that's comparable.
If you're looking for a mod friendly device, you should look elsewhere. With a locked bootloader, you're not going to get much dev support. Having said that, I would say that the future of this phone is bright. I can honestly say that I see no reason for me to mess with the system. It's excellent as it is.

Yea, hate to say it, but Google should stick to making software. Either that, or actually develop the production capacity to do your own manufacturing or at least quality control, instead of farming it out to random Chinese manufacturers. My only experience with Nexus is the Nexus 5, but that device was awful. In fact, I can't think of a single redeeming quality of that device.
I'm selling mine and going back to the Note 4

I was thinking about trading it for one of the new Google Pixel XL phones, but they aren't going to have an SD slot. I think I am still going to trade it for something else though... having a hard time figuring out what I want that's comparable.

yeah. I'm thinking about the OnePlus 3, the support for that phone seems very good. Plus it is not too expensive. I wonder what my options are for switching phones, I don't think T Mobile will take back my phone and stop charging me my monthly device installment.
Yeah, I think you have to wait a bit more to be eligible for jump

Wow you guys amaze me, I guess if it isnt made out of glass and metal with diamonds on it then its not worthy for you. I've had the nexus 5, 6 and 2013 7, and although this is a nice phone. Id take the functionality and stability of a nexus any day. You do not know what you are talking about if you really think this phone or an iphone is worlds ahead of a nexus. Yeah, the nexus 5 was cheap feeling, it was $350 brand new, and it was the most reliable phone I've ever had. And I've had a couple iphones, you guys either don't know what your doing or got a bad device.

I've been a nexus user since the Nexus 5 launched. and a CM user for years before then. the S7 edge is my first Samsung device (and only because I got it for free), because I have always felt the same way about Samsung as I do about apple. all hype, all trend, ignorant (non-power-user) fanbase. Samsung is literally the apple of Android, if you know what I mean. I'll never own another Samsung device after this one.

Do you think the bootloader will be unlocked? I'm still kinda new to Android and the first recent one I got was this S7 Edge. The V20 does look really nice though, hope it is released soon.
I also like the HTC 10 because there is a ton of stuff for it. The Viper rom looks awesome, pretty crazy they have OTA updates for the rom.

Typically LG doesn't lock their bootloaders, and since its going to be the same phone internationally its dev community may be loads better.

A few developments in the last month:
Unified 935U based roms - This will be great as the unification of US rom development (and the ability to have VOLTE) will make life better for US S7 users as they will have the newest rom of the 5 options running.
Note 7 release: The Note 7's UI seems better (samsung has already started promised to unify the UI in android 7) and the rom has been ported (same chipset).
Enhanced T-mobile Support on international models: Wifi calling/Volte has now been ported to the International (935F) model, at least if rooted. I switched as the Exynos version is faster and has better battery life (and the gap is greater in rooted versions than stock) and a stronger development community including Note 7 ports.

Goodness no. If you root and just care about speed, battery and custom rom options on android 6/touchwiz (and don't care about US warranty support), I would say yes.
If you care about warranty support, want an unrooted phone (or the ability to root without tripping Knox), want to use Samsung Pay or like T-mobile's financing options, The US model is definitely the one. It also has more upside
Long Term, Samsung's Android 7 may see a boot-loader unlock option, which would jump start CM/kernel development (cutting the performance gap between the phones and giving people who like Samsung's industrial design but not their software design a good solution). Next month, there will be Nexus phones running SD820, which will continue the advantage Qualcomm based roms have in custom development.
I'm going to be patient. This is a book I've read before. The fact is that the S7 edge will have the bootloader unlocked eventually.

The only fact here is that nobody really knows what may or may not happen. Wishful thinking is one thing, but it is far from fact.

The Nexus 5 was an awful device, with awful battery life, awful display, awful speaker, and awful camera. It was quick with stock Android, but it literally had no other redeeming qualities. Mine has been used as a paperweight, to keep papers from flying off my desk when my windows is open. I am not joking. I will take an Apple device over the Nexus 5 any day, and I can't stand Apple. And yes, I have an Apple device too. I have not had any other Nexus devices, and probably never will. Samsung devices have treated me very well over the years so I am sticking with them. And honestly, the GS7 is an excellent device all around, I couldn't care less about a locked bootloader. The days of spending hours/days flashing ROMs are behind me. I have more important things to do with my free time. So before you go off and make blanket statements such as "we don't know what we are doing," consider the fact that some of us don't share the same interests as you. The majority of the world wants a device that works out of the box and doesn't know what a bootloader is, much less that it can be locked or unlocked. You, and this community, are a tiny minority of smartphone users. And guess what, there are companies that cater to you as well. Don't be pissed at Samsung for delivering what their customers wanted.
