[Q] WIFI calling with play store version or just Tmobile version???

Hello all. I am really looking forward to the new Nexus 4 as is everyone else :laugh:. The only question I have, and it's a biggie for me, will there be a wifi calling app for the play store version of the phone. I assume that there will be one for the Tmobile store bought version, but where I live I get little to no cell service. I use the wifi calling anytime I am at the house therefore I need it. I would like to buy the phone from the play store because my contract isn't up soon. If not is it possible that an apk could be made to just flash into the phone's software? Maybe I'm just rambling on here, but I am just happy to see a new Nexus phone. :good::good:

AFAIK wifi calling has not even been confirmed, although it would be strange for a tmo device to lack it. They cannot provide this through the app store due to the complexity and low level nature of it, but it can be flashed if tmo makes it available on their own devices.
I think there are two possibilities:
1 its likely to come on tmo carrier devices sold at subsidy or through tmo, and unlikely to come on play store devices.
2 It is possible that the Nexus 4 will not have wifi calling support at all.
Either way I wouldnt expect wifi calling out of the box with a play store device.
This is not something that can be modded. The galaxy nexus still has no wifi calling support.

True, but if they add it to the models sold via Tmo it might be easy to port into roms for the Play Store variety as well.

chat support told me yesterday that the one from the tmobile store would have wifi calling.
%Leonil C: Yes. It doesn't really matter if its sold through Google. Wi-Fi calling is a phone feature and its not really T-mobile network that you will use if you call through Wi-Fi. Don't worry I assure you that.

well that probably ends it for me, I was thinking since the phone is so cheap, I could probably just pay a little more for unlimited minutes but then there is still the issue of getting reception in the house.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I can only hope that it does have it. I realy enjoy being able to rely on my internet rather than mobile service. Where I live I can only get 1 or two bars of service, so you can imagine that without wifi calling I cant even order a pizza. Ironly of it is that I live on a road named Tower Rd. due to the fact there are several cell towers built on the top of a mountain, and yet I still get no service.

Sorry dude but more than likely he's right ... T-Mobile WiFi Calling its not just an app, it needs a combination of Kernel and Radio protocols that WOULD require T-Mobile to have to re-write some of the software in it (witch I think they should since they are probably gonna have higher prices on the device any way ) but it really seems that google made a push for untouched software all across the Nexus 4 line

Why not use a third party app for wifi calling I use it on my GNote10.1 and it works quite well?

I think s.b. on G+ said T-Mobile had contributed stuff for Wi-Fi calling to AOSP; but I never checked the validity of his statement.

Really ??? Where did you see that ? We could definitely use that as a start to build our own !

With a combination of csipsimple app, free sipgate.com account, and google voice, you can do free wifi calling both send and receive from any android, doesn't even need to be activated. I have an old and slow htc hero I keep around as a spare that even works decently for wifi calling. I'm not going to write a guide on how to do this, but plenty of others already have.

It is all basically software. Just take a look at the HTC HD2 with Android, a WinMo phone that has Android T-Mobile wifi calling thanks to XDA developers. Perhaps the libs/apks from other phones can just be copied over and it would work.

Why to not buy the AT&T phone for TMO

I've seen some threads abound for people asking if the AT&T version works on T-Mobile and while it does there are some things that you should know before making that plunge even though you might be able to save $50.
First the good. If you've already done this that's fine. All bands for operation on T-mobile are on the AT&T variant. So no issues there. Don't feel like me making this thread means your device won't work.
If you're weighing what you lose in this scenario:
- You'll need to buy an unlock code, or at least find one, to switch it over. While these codes are cheap it's still chipping away at that small discount you got to buy the AT&T version instead of the TMO one.
- VoLTE support. While it's not enabled yet, it will come shortly and AT&T phones won't have the right radio and framework to make this work on TMO.
- QI Charging - in case you've been living under a rock in these forums, the AT&T model utilizes the basically non-existant powermat charging method and they have disabled the ability to use a QI wireless charger. Supposedly this is at the hardware level so this isn't something that can be fixed with a patch or custom ROM if true.
- No WiFi calling. Self explanatory. AT&T doesn't have/use this technology.
- locked bootloader. Now this may change over time with the amazing devs that we have but should you accidentally relock it or get a replacement phone because your old one got lost/broken you may have a newer bootloader than the one that could be bypassed previously. Better to just not deal with it.
Now for those looking to go the other way (TMO device on AT&T) that's fine. Just know that the tmo version is missing the 850mhz LTE band. Not that big a deal though as they don't really use that band much but it is a difference.
If anyone can think of anything else I missed feel free to chime in. Or if anyone has any general thoughts.

Yep. Works great when I'm out of the country and want to call someone here without being charged for international calling.

And anywhere you don't get great reception. My work is basically a giant steel cage so everyone's service sucks in here but Wifi incoming and outgoing calls work like a charm. Basements etc are also good areas to use it

According to T-mo it's 20 cents/min to call international through WiFi. makes sense since the call has to be routed to cellular on the other side. I guess an exception would be if the recipient also has WiFi calling.

It's VoLTE. Or, simultaneous Voice and Data as was missing from the device at launch with the promise to be fixed with an update by the end of the year.
I'm curious, though, if it counts towards your data allowance to use VoLTE. Does anyone know?

Voice no, video yes.

It's disappointing that the update is (apparently) only/mainly VoLTE, and not Android 5.0. Since carrier certification is a relatively slow, painful process, I think this is a sign that the Lollipop update is more than a couple months away.
I was initially excited about VoLTE, but I wasn't impressed with it when I used it briefly on my Droid Maxx. First, it wasn't reliable- I had dropped calls, and calls that never even rang my phone. Second, it killed my battery. It was rough- really rough- on it. I think both are related to the relatively weak LTE signal I have at home. To deal with the signal problems I have a Verizon network extender, but it looked like my phone was preferring the weak LTE signal over the strong signal from the network extender.
I wish Verizon would have just sucked it up and supported Wifi calling with Advanced Calling 1.0. I don't understand why they dislike Wifi calling so much. They're going to eventually support it, but the company's statements suggest they aren't happy about it. Who knows how much support there will be for it, though. Verizon apparently plans to release a LTE network extender at some point, which is only useful in certain niche situations if Wifi calling is broadly supported on VZW devices.

Wifi calling is for carriers that need someone else's network to supplement their own shortcomings.
That is why they don't implement it.

So is it just a messaging problem? Verizon doesn't want to support wifi calling because it's an implicit admission that they don't have great coverage everywhere?
Generally, I agree VZW coverage is pretty good. But, it's not great at my house, and its terrible at my workplace. VZW already implicitly acknowledges that they don't have great coverage everywhere by selling network extenders. They're continuing that by coming out with LTE network extenders (someday).
It just seems like its a cheaper, better option to support wifi calling, rather than forcing people (with coverage problems) to shell out $200-300 for a network extender.

I still think every carrier should support this. I'm in IT, and constantly find myself in data centers, or even meeting rooms deep into a building that you couldn't even make an E-911 call from... It really wouldn't be that difficult. When TMob had UMA back in '08 and I had a BB, I used it extensively. It was never because TMobile didn't have enough coverage.. Carriers basically make money when you use their network. Yes, most people have unlimited plans these days, but they build their network around the use it has. So why wouldn't they want you to be using your phone, minutes, texts, etc? On the other hand, why wouldn't they want to offload congestion to networks they don't have to maintain or pay for? There just aren't any down sides to have WiFi calling/text/mms.

You can make calls through Hangouts if that helps ya.

Verizon rolling out WiFi calling on the Galaxy S6

Is there a way to utilize this feature on our Nexus 6P now? I have really bad reception in my house and would love to receive and make calls in Wi-Fi.

I am also wondering the same thing. Voice over LTE works great on my 6P using Verizon's network, so hopefully WiFi calling can be made to work as well. I suspect that there are no technical limitations that prevent it from working. However, since Verizon still doesn't officially support the Nexus 6P, they obviously aren't going to mention anything concerning the functionality of WiFi calling when they flip the switch on the 8th. Since my father uses a Galaxy S6, I'm going to ask him if his phone receives a software update tomorrow, hopefully giving us an indication if the change to enable WiFi calling is only on the network side, or if the handset needs new software as well to enable the feature.

I need it bad!!! No signal in the gym and I'm there for almost 2 hours everyday. I checked my wife's and my employees devices, none of them have seen an update yet.
I hope we get it!!!

It's a software update that enables it. You then have to go enable it in the same menu as hd calling. When you turn it on you set a home adress for 911 purposes and then it activates the service. I think once you have done that on your line you can use it just like hd calling. Maybe I'm wrong though.

My wife's S6 just updated to include WiFi calling. Damn I want it on the 6P...lol

I really want this on Nexus 6P too. Any hope yet?

WiFi Calling on AT&T

I have looked thru thread after thread for days and cannot seem to enable WiFi calling on my OnePlus 5 on the AT&T network, Does anyone have a clue?

I switched from AT&T to T-Mobile when I got my OnePlus, so I can't say for sure, but I believe AT&T limits WiFi-Calling to certain devices, and even then, only the AT&T variants of those. (Mostly newer and from big name brands e.g. Apple, Samsung, HTC, LG). Since to my knowledge even an unlocked Galaxy s8 won't have WiFi calling on AT&T, it is unlikely that any OnePlus device will ever have that ability.

Le Pro3 is the only device that is BYOD and works on AT&T I believe.

I was with family today in Anaheim, a highly populated, very modern city I mean Disneyland is there.
My dad has AT&T, I have mint sim (a t mobile mvno) I had near 70-80db signal, he was bouncing between 120 and up.. Had no signal whatsoever for extended periods of time. And with their low band frequency purchase, it's only getting better. It's anecdotal evidence, but still..
While I don't think t mobile offers the best network, I strongly feel they are going to get there in a couple years should they keep this up..

I'm wondering about WiFi texting can the oneplus 5 do it? Also I noticed when in connected to WiFi I can't send any texts.

Att does not allow the 1+5, albeight the technology is there, to do VoWifi or VoLte. They reserve those features for devices solely purchased from Att, ie Only branded devices. If the Le eco does work it out of the box, that's awesome. Don't tell Att that, lol. I got into a huge argument with Att NatCs and filed troubleshooting tickets only to be told, sorry, since it wasn't purchased directly, no work. I have since made the move to TMobile. Im in NJ as a reference. And to be honest, I find the voice quality vastly better to what I had with Att, with hd voice too. I've hit some spots with little to no coverage, usually at a friend's house but my VoWifi kicks in and I have service once again with no issues.

Many retail/unlock mobiles have "Wifi Calling" function but not any menu entry to enable , The APP can check the hidden function and enable it if can use.

Interesting app. But I'm not sure it works.
I install it, on my un-rooted OnePlus 5, then run it - hey! there's a convincing looking setting, for wifi - and so I activate it. But everytime I return to the app, the setting is 'off' again. Does that mean the setting doesn't 'stick' and my phone (running on AT&T) cannot actually use wifi?
Plus, it looks to me as though the app has to remain running (although there's a setting to not display the notification icon, it doesn't seem to 'stick' either).
Ultimately, I cannot seem to get my phone to actually make a wifi call. For this reason, I'm skeptical this app is able to enable wifi calling, on the AT&T network.

I just called ATT.
I want to upgrade to the 5 and i need it to call over wifi as most of the time i'm in a rural situation with no coverage.
The ATT tech support said there would be no problem.

I hate to say it, but they lied (unless there's been a drastic change as-of-late).
Even if you can get them to provision your 5T, it'll only "stick" for a minute or so, and then revert.
AT&T is somewhat "famous" for their lack of BYOD (non-branded) WiFi call/text support. The exception is iOS devices, and a couple of "certified" Android phones; I think the HTC 10 (or maybe it was the 9) was an example, you can probably count these on one hand.

I call At&T today. No changes so far.

AT&T has an issue like this forever, as they do not wish to give that option to all. That is like a drop in profits, and drop in latency and lags. Anyways, too long to explain, but the gist is, they will have loss if they allow full coverage (at least loss on journal entries)..
