When I got the phone, I rooted it, put xposed on it and all that, and I froze the system update. I recall that people didn't like the lollipop firmware for this phone. Is that still the same? Do people still hate it? Or is it worth upgrading to? It would be nice to have the priority modes in lollipop but I don't want a slower, worse performing, worse battery life phone.
Thanks for your suggestions.
Lollipop is better, because on latest . 236 you can install many mods, and I prefer lollipop ui. But on kitkat(.157) battery life is better, higher performance and stability. Your choice

I'm with @CmDaRkShAdOw. If I was to stay on KK, it would be to use CM11, or other custom ROM. For stock, latest update is best. If you want stock-based custom, @munjeni's .108 KK, or @dstrikersZ1's .236 LP is the way to go.

I just installed official Touchwiz Lollipop from Samsung on my Galaxy S5 and i just wanted to ask you guys...
I think kitkat have a definitely better battery life and a much more beautiful lock screen... but Lollipop comes with ART and great design improvments on system apps.
Which one do you think it's better? Kitkat or Lollipop and why
KitKat is better (for now).
Better battery life, no proximity sensor issues, no wifi issues, no light sensor issues , TW works smoother, overal experience is better even with no ART. Benchmark scores is not everything.
I got Lollipop 3 times and every time I downgraded to KitKat stock rom with root.
No exposed framework on LP (yet).
Maybe in couple of months when LP will be more mature project I will update.
Android One is going to have Android 5.1 soon. For now they sticked with 4.4.4.
I think that Samsung was to hurry with 5.0. They should update to 4.4.4 (especialy they had 4.4.4 done for G901).
I beg to differ with qubbus, I think LP is a much better experience than KK.
- Much more refined and better looking UI;
- I've had none of the issues stated in his post. Battery is the same for me, no issues with the sensors.
- I indeed miss Xposed but for now I rather have the small tweaks of Lollipop.
All in all, the choice is yours.

Battery was the main reason i choosed to downgrade.. I couldn't get even through 1 day !
The rest was fine for me. ( Even if i didn't liked that new lockscreen too much )
i got my s5 on kitkat and coming from a nexus4 I was quite unsatisfied with the smoothness. but some dev's at the N4 community are really far at solving bugs and memory leaks so lollipop is running quite perfect on the N4. anyway, after I flashed lollipop on my S5 for the first time I was quite happy with the smoothness. much better then KitKat! yesterday I downgraded to KitKat because I wanted to try wanam xposed. but I almost instantly returned to lollipop.. much, much better! it looks better (too bad it's still a long way from stock android), it's much smoother and for me; battery life isn't much different. I didn't encounter any bugs, for me lollipop is running bug less but I have to say I don't use any of Samsung's extra features..

well its a small computer with a cpu on par with certain laptops, its got the same resolution as a hi def tv, its constantly connected to the internet. i think wanting any more than 12 hours is ludicris and misguided.

Haha. i got your point. But my point was that with Lollipop i couldn t make even 12 hours.
funny how people have different problems with the same OS
I wonder if there like me who have problems in the game of Modern Combat 5? It fails at startup after lollipop update.

Lol, thanks. Yes, I understand what it means, my apologies for not elaborating. Are you saying that you're flashing the LP tar through Odin, then "downgrading" to KK by flashing the KK tar through Odin, or just flashing down up and down with zips through custom recovery?

So you have successfully flashed a 4.4.2 or 4.4.4 KK tar using Odin AFTER flashing LP 5.0 through Odin or downloading it OTA?

Yup, that's what a lot of people are doing after updating via KIES or OTA to Lollipop and finding it worse than KK
Im considering it myself, although don't seem to be having as many issues as others are posting since factory resetting and freezing a few bloatware apps
For me KK is better than Lollipop.
1. Most mods here don't work on Lollipop, yet
2. Xposed isn't supported on Lollipop (BIG ISSUE FOR ME)
3. Notification dropdown background is transparent. I know I can change it if I flash AllianceRom 6.0, but the above 2 points still stand
Gonna wait until Rovo fixes Xposed (hopefully) and for most mods on XDA to recieve a Lollipop version as well (some have it now, but not even close to all of them)
Soo.yeah...Lollipop is smoother and better looking, which means absolutely nothing if you can't mod it the way you want to!

If I wanna try Lollipop, can I restore my 4.4.2 nandroid backup over my 5.0 firmware just like I would normally if I'm on KK?

There seems to be a lot of conflicting info about it, but Ive read a good few people saying they have managed it fine with no problems after flashing back to KK - not done it myself yet though
But yea, a lot of places are saying if you flash from a KNOX enabled firmware back to a firmware without KNOX, it won't work due to the bootloader, but members here and droid central forums report it working 100% fine
Was there ever a build of KK that had KNOX ?
If yes, then that's likely the build people are flashing back to, if not, then I have no idea
Im still on the fence about flashing back, or just forgetting the warranty and rooting this thing on lollipop as it is
I suppose even if it bricked, you'd be able to recover with ODIN
I'm coming back to KitKat. I didn't like android lollipop. Some of the aplications are not supported and battery life is terrible
Not sure if I'm supposed to post here, never ventured from my phone's thread before. My step dad has had his S5 since maybe April 2014 and it's been a brilliant upgrade from his S3 which he hated after the 4.3 update. He's loved his S5's battery life, performance, everything, but now it's the same story as his S3, and after the 5.0 update the battery is OK he says, but its lagging and crashing. I said that I could "fix" it, and I'd do that with a custom ROM. Do you recommend a stable ROM with battery life the same or better than stock, doesn't matter if it's kitkat or lollipop, however lollipop is better, if anyone could help, I'd be extremely helpful. As far as I know, Samsung's do not have a locked bootloader, correct me if I'm wrong, thanks.
Go for a factory reset, I did that and my S5 runs so nicely on 5.0, more battery and quicker in my opinion. Definitely would try that first.

A lot of people are reporting issues with 5.0 at the moment......
Things like.....
Poor battery
Problems with wifi
Problems with s - health
Problems with NFC
I'd be tempted to downgrade back to 4.4.2 and wait a while......it's where I'm staying for a while.....at least until 5.0 is a bit more polished......

Hi all. I have a few questions about my Note 3 n9005.
Im on stock TW 4.4.2 with Towel root and knox is 0x0.
I have read in the threads but have not fund the answers i'm looking for. I hope you fine people can help me
1. Knox. Do i need to care if Knox is 0x0 or 0x1 if my phone is without warranty?
2. Do i benefit from upgrading to Lollipop at all? If so, in what way? What Lollipop? Faster? Better battery? Features?
3. Are there drawbaks to Lollipop on Note 3? If so, what?
4. If i stay on TW 4.4.2, do i benefit from changing to a costum kernel? Faster? Better battery? Features?
5. If not Lollipop, are there stable and battery friendly custom TW-roms that you can recommend?
I'm asking because i'm not quite satisfied with stock 4.4.2. I think it might draw unnecessary battery for one. Idle and in use.
And of course i want to see what Lollipop is all about. (It's not available via update in Sweden for me)
My phone is stable and thats how i like and need my phone right now. So i don´t really want to go through all the hassle of experimenting to see what works or not. Not if there are kind people here to help me in the right direction.
Then i can experiment and see what works for me
I really do appreciate if you can help me with this.

Trolling. Report any irrelevant or nuisance posts if you come across them.
1- No and Yes. If your warranty is void then you shouldn't care about KNOX. You should only care about KNOX if you use that security. I mean if you turn on KNOX your phone will be more secured and all that, but I don't care about that, can't say about you.
2- Yes, in my opinion. It's faster, smoother, better battery life absolutely by 20-25% for me (however I have heard the opposite as well), don't know if there is any additional features or not, don't think so.
3- Depends on your taste. For some people the whitish/ lighter background of Lollipop is bothersome, but for me it was the opposite, I hated darkish background of KitKat. Also some people say battery backup is worse than KK, but it was opposite for me. You will also hear that some apps/ games crash to often, but I personally haven't found a single app which crashes, and I don't play games on my phone. Some will say RAM usage is much higher, it was true, but with latest update (OF3) I don't see any high RAM usage at all.
4- You will always benefit from using a custom kernel over stock kernel, for everything.
5- No interest or idea about non-Lollipop ROMs any more. But if you are looking for LP ROMs then flash AryaMod if you want to have quite a lot of features, or just flash the stock Deodexed version of latest ROM and install Xposed framework to get most out of your phone.
It's either hate or love with LP, I love it, but you might hate it. And no one can tell you either because no one will know your personal taste.
Thank you so much for your long and detailed answer m8. I really appreciate it.
Okey. Then i don´t care abot Knox. :d
Is it AryaMod V7.1 TW Lollipop Official POF3 you are referring too? Do you have experience of this Rom?
I think i will start with a custom kernel for TW. But i have to say that i'm lost in which one to choose. Do you have a sugestion for 4.4.2 Kernel?
Lollipop sounds good if you are one of the lucky ones. I will try it soon.
Thank you again my friend.
Yes, it is AryaMod 7.1 I am referring to. I used Arya for over a month actually, very stable and full featured ROM, but the ROM has its own systemUI mods, for that Xposed is not fully compatible with it, and I had to ditch it. I can't live without Xposed modules.
For KK kernel, I don't really remember much, but when I was on KK I remember using the Faux's kernel, I think the kernel was maintained by someone called yank555 or something like that, it was a great kernel. And as it was not available for LP any more I switched to Audax kernel (as you can see in my siggy), another great kernel (it's actually a continuation of Fulgor kernel, and Fulgor was available for KK too as far as I can remember, so you can try that too if you wish to stay on KK). And if you want better battery related kernel for LP then Arter's kernel should be your choice, but I prefer for performance over anything, so not using it.
And anytime, we are here to help only, and seek it when in need
Ooh.. i doo love my Xposed modules. :/ Then i will have to find another Rom.
What Rom are you on now and is it what i'm looking for? Link? Arter's kernel works with the rom you are using?
Thanks. Now i can use the search and see what i find here
Thanks for the great support. You help in the true XDA Spirit.
Was afraid of getting the "Read" answer. Se my siggy.

I'm planning to downgrade to MM due to the hideous Android OS and Android System battery draining. Getting hardly 2 hours of SOT with very light use. Anyway I know that I'll have to flash the factory image but there are a lot of model types and I don't know which to download. So how do I know the variant and is there a difference between them and is there a certain model famous for the battery drain bug while the others are working fine?

If you are going down to Marshmallow surely just go to the last version of MM
https://developers.google.com/android/images#angler
Grab - 6.0.1 (MTC20L)
I don't think battery drain was that much of an issue on MM but could be wrong, someone else may recommend a different build but i'd go with the last build. before nougat.

There have been rumors about a bricks while downgrading?
I am not rooted , no custom recovery, unlocked bootloader. So that should be okay right?
Can't see how bricking is possible. Unlock, flash, lock. Done a thousand times.

Hey, guys.
I want to downgrade to MM too because of the same battery drain reason. I'm running the latest PureNexus 7.0
I was on RR before. I'm rooted, unlocked, latest TWRP. Can I just flash my old RR Rom and the MM vendor image?
Holy Hell... I come here periodically to check whether battery drain has been solved. One of the reasons I chose a Nexus for was to get timely security updates. Tying them to a sub-par version of the OS ends up negating the advantage for me. How can Google mess up battery so much, after all the talk about battery life improvements with Nougat?

For the record, I just flashed the MM vendor image and RR rom via TWRP and everything booted just fine and is running smooth. Didn't have to flash the stock rom. I'll just leave this here in case there's someone else looking for a solution
Mine model is 935FD, INDIA. Samsung pushed the update today and I installed, however, not liking the notifications style. I want to go back to Marshmallow. Is it possible by flashing MM stock firmware via ODIN. I know people have done it (have seen some YouTube videos) but those people were on beta firmware of Noughat, not on final official one. Lastly, if nobody knows the definitive answer and still I want to take the plunge, what worst can happen?
yes u can
You can just flash back to Nougat.
But personally I think you're mad. Nougat is far better than MM. beter battery, better performance, better functions.
I have successfully downgraded, however, all my data was lost. Thankfully I had backup so I restored. It is a matter of personal preference so I think I'm not mad IMHO
