I thinking about buying an application but wanted to know where the program is stored.
If I were to upgrade or change my android build would the application follow? Does the market place keep track of my purchases and lets me download it again or do I need to place it in a particular folder?

you would need a back up program but if u purchase a paid app from market you will find it in your downloads area

The way the android market handles this, is when you purchase an app, it links it to your google account indefinitely.
The reason for this, is for when you upgrade your device firmware, lose your phone, and purchase a new android device on any network (sprint, verizon, t-mobile, at&t, yada yada) you may get all of your paid apps back on your new device, or new firmware.
So, as long as you use the same google account to log in to your device (I don't know why you wouldn't because you can store all your contacts in the cloud on your gmail account), you will be able to get your previously paid android apps at no additional cost.
Have fun, and enjoy those paid apps out there. There are some good ones.

Paid apps don't appear when switching build

I've been using mdeejay's Revolution for a few weeks, and decided to take the plunge an purchase the apps I use the most.
A couple of days ago, I installed desire_cs in parallel for experimenting. I dual boot between these two with no problem.
However, after associating the same account with Market in desire_cs, I do *not* see my paid apps.
I've tried various tricks (restore the Market data with Ti-backup, clear Market data, dial '*#*#CHECKIN#*#*', copy the fingerprint in build.prop, just wait online). My Downloads list remains empty, and Market behaves as if I need to purchase the apps again. Google Checkout (on the web) clearly shows that my purchases are valid.
Booting back to the MDJ build, everything looks dandy.
I tried restoring a backup of a paid app from the MDJ build into the desire_cs build. This works OK, but Market still does not flag the app as purchased.
This makes me hesitate to purchase any more apps - though I know Ti-backup will probably be able to preserve my MDJ setup for me, I will need to manually check for updates to the paid apps, and will probably need to aquire them from shady corners of the net.

Gotta be some kind of a fluke, I have restored/updated apps countless times from build to build using the Downloads section of the Market. They have always showed up for me, I still have paid apps from my Tilt2 days that I d/l and update from the market.
Only thing I can think of for your case is maybe a difference in Market region between your two builds. Maybe if you use Market Enabler to change your Market region in your new build?
But before going on an app buying spree, I would install a new build or two, and experiment. Who knows, it's possible you may just have really bad luck or Google hates you
Strange...it has to be a fluke. I've bought many apps and I'm a builoholic...always changing (monster ADD) and the APPs are always waiting in downloads. The exception to this is the full version of launcher pro which I bought in app and paid for through paypal...
I'm with huggs in guessing its a region issue. Try Market Enabler and let us know what happens...kinda interested in the outcome.
You should be able to re-activate them with the google purchase transaction number (like I did with CoPilot)... after purchasing an app you should have received an invoice stating what your google checkout number was...
I have never had trouble installing purchased apps in different builds after upgrading. Both on my Desire and HD2 I can find all my purchased apps, regardless of on which device or ROM the app was bought.
It is anoying seeing that icon I didn't ask for in my launcher... Does it persist in 2.3?

I mean, Amazon MP3 is just a "google app" like the others. You never asked for the Market, but Google put it in so that you could download other apps. Same of Gmail, Browser, Email, Maps, News & meteo... you may or may not use them, but they are there. You can always adb remount and delete the apps you don't want.
I don't see the problem Amazon mp3 if u don't like don't use but I do think it comes stock on all android phones

Yeah, pretty sure it isn't crapware. It comes stock with Android doesn't it? You get an app store and a music store.
The funny thing is that carriers usually like to add their own select choice of bloatware to devices, but on my Nexus One, vodafone actually removed the Amazon mp3 bloat!
The European Union is really strict with anti-competitive behaviour, (hence the Windows 'Browser Ballot' screen), so i guess this is the reason why.

I suppose it's not a big deal, memory management on android is different than windows, but for me... I label all the sys apps I don't care for and every time I install a nightly, I just run titanium backup at first boot and remove all the labeled sys apps.
I originally rooted my phone just to get rid of the bloatware I didn't want on there.
Eventually I went to CM as the update messages were annoying and I couldn't update with all the missing stock stuff.
Now I'm clean and no messages.
I was wondering the same thing. I don't mind the Amazon MP3 app, but I noticed in videos of the NS it appeared the Twitter app weren't included on that phone. I was hoping maybe Google reconsidered the junk they considered standard.
i guess it would be nice for them to let us remove it without root, but i really like the amazon mp3 store being on my phone. i loathe itunes, so i only have the amazon store to buy my music. without it i would be teh suck. so i actually like having the mp3 store on stock android phones.
Well Google uses Amazon as there 'itunes' music store. I assume that Amazon will remain in there until Google setups their own.
I admit that I was annoyed by it too. Although using Root Manager (with Root access) is easy enough to delete. Custom roms usually don't include it either, which was my first choice.
Rumor has it that on Wednesday, along with the in-depth look at Honeycomb, Google will announce Google Music. So maybe they won't include AmazonMP3 when ever they roll out Gingerbread.

Amazon MP3 had an update in the last few months that only put it in memory if the user started the app.. you're saying it still memory resident even though you don't use it?
Does the Nexus S have the Amazon MP3 app?
Use Titanium Backup to freeze it, problem solved
As mentioned above, your options are:
a) "Freeze" it in Titanium Backup to stop it appearing in stock launcher.
b) If using LauncherPro, use the option to hide unwanted apps
c) Use Titanium Backup to uninstall the app
d) Delete the apk from /system/app/ via an adb shell.
e) Have a cup of concrete and harden up.
Not a big deal.
If you're like me and wanna keep using stock android, just use Titanium to freeze it.
Next update comes up, unfreeze it and update, then re-freeze it.

No, this is NOT the Xposed "Fix Memory Leak" install that fixes nothing, because Sony already patched that in to their 5.0.2 release. If you have it installed now, you can uninstall it because it is literally doing nothing but taking up free space on your device; and is another hook you don't need in your install process. That also requires root to be installed, and this is a no-root situation
After a week of battling with XZDR and [NUT] starting to hate me, I decided to just bite the bullet, and FTF flash the stock, unrooted firmware, and see what it was like without root and if I could live. Most of the apps, not all of them though, can be disabled completely from within Android app manager, so things like TiBu are not really needed. I don't use Facebook or Twitter apps so having the "Xperia for Facebook" apps, which can't be frozen/disabled, was a pain in the ass, but they don't have any login information so everything's safe there.
I was very unimpressed with the way certain apps loaded. As an example, using Disa for my messaging solution was great, but SwiftKey was being a jerk. I'd press on the text input field and the keyboard would show up and then disappear right away. It would sometimes take up to 3 minutes of constant press *hides* press *hides* press *hides* just to be able to type a "K" message to someone. Not happy. Then, I'd load up Clash of Clans, do what I needed to do, then close it, then load up Family Guy, and it would crash because CoC was in the background. I'd have to completely reboot my phone in order to go from one game to the other. Very unhappy.
I found the app "Android System WebView", and not knowing what it was, tried to disable it. I uninstalled updates and disabled the system package, but it wouldn't let me disable it, only remove and replace with stock, and I thought that that was good enough. Rebooted my phone, and blamo.. phone performance increased by at least 3 orders of magnitude!
I've yet to have the SwiftKey hiding issue, and as I typed this, I finished the gold mine upgrade and went to see if Peter was doing Shipoopiing, and all was well.
Great thing is, if this doesn't fix your issue - you can update it right back to normal from Google Play.

For me? i don't find any issues with the memory management by Lollipop as of today (from the first release). In fact, my phone runs faster and smoother compared to KK. Battery is so good that i don't need to recharge at night after the whole day usage. I use also the google keyboard (the VERY first version) which i dont find any problems at all. I just make my phone as simple as possible. No root done and i just disable some bloatwares and un-installing some gapps. I also ask myself, what's the use of Android System Webview? i do some couple of search and i found that, it does not affect the performance of my phone, so i just keep it update.

Use the built-in Android uninstaller - don't use TiBu if you're rooted or completely uninstall it. Android interface won't let you uninstall it entirely, just remove the updates and return it to stock factory settings.
It's currently working perfect for me - no issues or slowdowns or crashes all day today. I've used Chrome, the key program that this app is designed for, and it still works fine, along with a few other select programs that utilize it. All is well.
I don't know about stability issues if you're rooted and you completely uninstall it - so proceed at your own risk..

As interesting as this solution seems, I think I found why you don't have an issue I used to have a lot of launcher redraws and slow downs every now and then. So I froze a bunch of apps using ROM Toolbox and boom, no more redraws or slow downs. Worked like a charm. I think freezing or uninstalling bloat was the reason your memory issue was fixed. Cause I didn't uninstall the web view or make any changes with regard to it.
Uninstall or freeze bloat, and it should fix it immediately

Security issue
Please be aware that you are opening yourself up to security issues by uninstalling these updates. This webview component is the part of Android used for displaying webpages inside of other apps. Since it is a full HTML renderer, it is susceptible to the same security issues that regularly get fixed in your Chrome installation. But previously, (pre-lollipop) this component was part of your ROM and could only be updated by firmware updates. Since lollipop, Google separated this component into an updateable Android package. I sincerely wonder if your ¨fix¨ was due to the uninstallation of these updates. You have, however, already missed 4 security updates.

About the WebView. If you think that WebView is responsible for your device not working properly then you definitely don't know what WebView is and when it's even being used. You don't just go and disable any system app you don't recognize. Those advices are worthless.
All you need is a stable ROM. I'm using my own custom ROM, have the latest Play services, Play Store and WebView embedded into the ROM. The ROM works perfectly and normaly has 700-800 free RAM.

Your attitude towards root does not make a lot of sense: your system apps have root regardless of rooting status. Your android runs as root without asking for permission. So, your phone IS rooted by default. The only one who does not have root access is you. Having root for you means having an app that alerts you and asks for your permission when there is a request for root by other apps. That prevents malicious script execution. Let me give you an example: your web browser sits in system partition which has automatic root access. Suppose, you visit a site thay silently executes a java script and takes over your browser. Now, it has root permission without any notice to you: it can download anything to your system and take over your phone. And there is nothing you can do to stop this unless you have root. Also, think about oem and google updates: they all can run silently, unless you have root.
So, in short, having no root equals no security at all...

As few peoples pointed out, by NOT installing Android System WebView update, your phone might have some security risk.
I would really not recommend using this "FIX" , My Z1 doesn't have this sort of problem anyway.
Webview IS security risk, because it is an html renderer with web connection abilities. There is no legitimate reason for a user to have this app, which purpose is to provide an advertising vehicle for corrupt developers (I call corrupt those devs who use ads in their "free" apps). It is better to just uninstall this app than constantly update it where updates are always behind bugs, malware and other security vulnerabilities. Only your web browser, e-mail client and internet messaging apps should be allowed to connect to the internet for security reasons and battery/performance sake. So, while I don't agree with OP's attitude towards root, I support him when he gets rid of another bloat/malware/security risk...
As far as deleting the app, if your rom does not provide for system app removal, just use a file manager (root required) and erase the app from the system...
For anyone who cares:
Webview is part of android. Not updating it is a bad idea as others have stated. There was an update about two weeks ago that had some bugs and was eating battery and causing some apps to crash. Google fixed it quickly and the current one in the play store is fine again. No battery drain and plays nice with all apps.
It's funny that if Google didn't release a buggy update, nobody would have even known or cared it was there. They would have just updated it.
As others have stated it was always there, only now they are updating it regularly through the play store instead of having to wait for an OTA. If you don't update it, that's fine, it is your choice.
It should be updated considering there are security and performance fixes in the updates. Giving others erroneous information and telling them to remove it completely when you don't even know what it is, is not a good idea.
A simple Google search when the buggy update dropped would have revealed that it was just that, a buggy update. Solution was, uninstall just the update UNTIL Google released a fixed one. Personally I have noticed better battery since the newest update.

No matter the solution, this new Lollipop release is really bug when it comes to memory management. I can't listen to a podcast without the app being killed ten times an hour... It never happened to me before. My smartwatch is constantly disconnected because the Wear app is killed every time I receive a message and so on (while there are still at least 400 MB free in memory).

It is better to just uninstall this app than constantly update it where updates are always behind bugs, malware and other security vulnerabilities. Only your web browser, e-mail client and internet messaging apps should be allowed to connect to the internet for security reasons and battery/performance sake. So, while I don't agree with OP's attitude towards root, I support him when he gets rid of another bloat/malware/security risk...
As far as deleting the app, if your rom does not provide for system app removal, just use a file manager (root required) and erase the app from the system...

I´m sorry, this really is just bad advise: you are breaking apps (legitimate apps, not the adviews you refer to) by removing this app. Again: this is not an app, it is a system component that Google made updateable via the play store. It is not meant to be removed without breaking apps.

Name one app (that is no malware/bug/ad) broken because one removes webview...
Just because an app sits in the system does not make it a legitimate one. Any app, if it wants to display an internet page, can use stock browser. There is simply no reason to have an extra layer (webview) that exposes you to security risks. This is, by the way, what Google does: to make sure that your device is wide open to commercial/spying interests. But luckily, because of open source, one can remove most of this garbage...
My nook Simple Touch is rooted used NookManager however I do not get network connectivity on third party apps.
The built in B&N apps and the browser work but the Amazon appstore and any sideloaded apps cannot connect to the internet.
I have even tried installing these apps to the system but that makes no difference.
Any help fixing this problem would be appreciated.

I've since installed the stock android 2.1 email application and that works fine. Confused as to why only these applications have a data connection but other third party ones don't.

That seems kind of bizarre. If you don't have too much installed at this point I think maybe you should use NookManager to restore to factory and try the rooting process again after re-registering the device. Some subtle but vital piece of information is missing.
I have developed the same problem earlier this month. The Amazon Appstore only allows me to see apps I have previously installed. App searches on Amazon fail with a network connectivity problem.
I understand that postcode or phone number security questions have been recently introduced to the appstore login. Can anyone confirm that they can still access the appstore on a NookManager-rooted Nook?
I've just used NookManager's rescue option to successfully restore a year-old Nook image but the problem remains. The Opera Mobile browser opens but fails with an "Internal Service Failure" because the Amazon Appstore is inaccessible. ColorNotes does the same. Several other Amazon apps continue to work fine. Can I, perhaps, find a compatible browser and note app from Google Play and ignore Amazon altogether?
I guess I may have to do a factory rest, but I'll loose all my apps customization. Does a reset ensure the problem will cease?
I began to have trouble with the version of the Amazon App Store that comes with NookManager in short order after rooting some years back. Apps from the store (like Opera Mobile) were cranky and I would get random error messages about the App Store and its problems while reading or doing something else. I finally got rid of it and searched for app sources elsewhere.
I've attached a generic copy of Opera Mobile below. Works great for me although I found that altering the UAString gives better discrimination of sites that offer simpler mobile versions.
I suspect other connectivity issues are due to the Amazon App Store problems as you describe them.

Your generic Opera Mobile works fine once I realized that, for installation, apps like this need to be moved to /system/app and run! I now realize that my early attempts to replace the Amazon version had failed for the same reason. Amazon appstore is no longer a problem, so I thank you.
As for the UAString, I generally prefer desktop view to mobile view, because it's more comprehensive. I'm still hunting for a generic ColorNotes but that matters little.

Not sure why your Opera needs to be in the /system/app folder to run properly. Mine is in /data/app and works just fine, but the main thing is that you got it working for you!
Have had my Swift 2x for a few months and have been happy on the whole. Camera is just average but for the price it's a cracking phone.
Anyway, the recent announcement of the lockscreen ads for a discount on a new phone leaves me a bit uneasy. A lot has been mentioned about Truecaller replacing the stock dialer and for me the introductory period comes to an end in a week or so and I suppose the ads will start popping up on that.
I fully realise that Wileyfox need a funding stream but I do not like ads. This has got me to un Wileyfox my phone!
I installed the Non-Nexus dialer from apk mirror, google messages and contact from playstore and disabled truecaller and the stock messages and contacts. The bit that has me worried is that I prefer google stuff to what came with the phone originally.
Thing is I have felt today that my phone as a bit smoother and quicker.
Trying to avoid flashing Lineage as once Ive started flashing then I dont stop until I break it!!!!!

First thing I did after the Nougat update was disable the Truecaller and install the nonnexus
However, that's all the unwileyfoxing I needed to do (ok I installed Nova launcher since I was used to it, but in fact I haven't found anything wrong with Foxhole per se). I'm still very happy with the phone and especially with the software support. As in, this feels the best phone I ever had.
(as to the recent changes re. Wileyfox income flow, the jury is still out on that - as long as I can disable stuff I don't really care that much)
I did exactly the same right after getting the phone.
Installed Google Phone, Contacts, Messages and disabled the original ones. Reflashed opengapps to get rid of the clutter, switched to Nova Launcher. Happy camper.
Just stumbled on to this post after purchasing a Wileyfox Swift 2 plus completely forgetting that Cyanogen isn't a thing anymore. . I'm coming from a heavily rooted OnePlus One (via a windows phone, but shhhhh) and wondered if you guys had any advice on what to instantly do to the phone?

As stated before in this thread:
- update the phone to the latest version (OTA)
- disable the Truecaller program and install another dialer (the 'nonnexus' version of the google phone app is my personal fave works well enough)
- install the launcher of your choice (though I find there's nothing wrong with Foxhole, you can disable the news feed if you like, I was just used to Nova Launcher)
- I've also disabled 'Wileyfox Account', because I don't need it; if they roll out some actual use for it that I find interesting, we'll see later.
For the rest there's nothing wrong with the basic installation, in my opinion. Good luck with the phone.
(I haven't rooted my phone since I didn't see the need; if you need root for something, I can't help you there)
by the way, re. Windows Phone: I had a Nokia 620 or something and was really, really happy with it. But for the lack of apps for the platform (banking apps, mainly) I would have happily stayed on. But nowadays, a smartphone without mobile banking is... sad

Thank you so much for your help, did everything you said except Nova Launcher (although I love it, I'll try anything new) had this phone about two hours and love it (especially for £150)
The only reason I rooted my first android (Sony Xperia Play) was to be able to listen to YouTube music without the app being open. Then I discovered the world of possibilities. But you're right, it is sad, hence why I'm holding off rooting this time (as you can't use android pay on a rooted device)
My Nokia hated being touched whilst on charge, would constantly lose cell signal, but the batter would last all day!

I used to root my phones but being honest, most stock android is pretty ok at the moment. I would usually root to install ad blocking but now I use dns66 so android pay and other software works without a hitch.
I use GoogleNow as a launcher btw.

Just simple tweaks like transparent notification shade and moving the clock (I hated it on the right hand side) and even changing the battery icon. I've heard Magisk seems to be able to root your phone whilst keeping Android Pay?
Feel free to tell me to use Google (or the search function) but, what is dns66?

In the thread about Dns66 it is stated that the app might interfere with downloads on Nougat (due to a download manager bug). Don't you have any issues with this?
