So I'm talking to my friend today about how my battery just dies here in Italy (I'm an American by birth, working in Italy, because if you can work and live in Italy, you should). So I say when I get back from visiting my family, I should buy a new phone. And he says, "well, just root it, it's probably all the Verizon bloatware you have on there." I say "hai ragione" and start thinking about it. He tells me this is the place with all the info I need. Now I know of rooting. I have a basic knowledge of programming and systems. I'm a fantastic mechanic/technician and can fix most anything. Taught myself basic php, html, and a few other programming languages. I feel fairly confident with the right information and guides I can tackle any project.
That being said, I know this is difficult. I'm not under any illusions that it will be simple or that I won't screw up and brick this thing.
So my question is. Verizon SM G900V S5, Android 5.0 where do I start? What do I need? What is the best way to get this thing running as a fine, unbranded phone?

This is my very first smart phone so when I switched over from the Iden network I about stroked out...LOL....been with Nextel for over 10 years. I'm sure you get this question a ton, and I have done some reading through this forum. (A close friend referred me here) Im looking for what you would term "absolute essentials" in regards to running the phone. If you have advice for me to learn from, please share it. Understand that Im a "Virgin" to these phones, so if you tell me that my flux capacitor needs adjusting, I will probably believe you..
Anyways..sorry to bother you guys with this, was just looking for your opinions........
What are you looking for, exactly?
oops.. I guess I could have clarified a bit better. Basically looking to find out what people view as essential apps. Things to do or avoid to make sure my Hero runs smooth. Those type of things. Im really new with this phone, and I'm sure I will learn a ton, but I have a nasty habit of messing stuff up.. Does that clarify a little bit better?
Thanks for your time.
Brian
I love hacking the crap out of my phone that's number 1 to me.
2nd id have to say senseUI is the best phone experience Ive ever had.
3rd is Android. There is so many good things about Android im not even getting into it.
4th is value. Sprint's network is very good in my area and it's half the price of other android carriers and free calling to any mobile phones
Thats a winner for me
How exactly does someone get started on creating a root? Asking this, I can imagine I sound very uninformed (the quick fix kind of guy). By no means do I think developing a root is easy, done in 5 minutes. I just discovered my new AT&T GS5 cannot be rooted. That made me curious to know what prerequisites are needed for developing a root. Where would I start? I've been developing in VB.NET for about a year, so I'm not foreign to coding (not that VB is used in this area anyway; I'm not too sure why I even use VB).
Hey everyone, i have been an apple fan for quite some time now (literally my whole life)! All my phones are iPhones, all my products are apple! I have become a complete Apple enthusiast. However, after a simple 20 minutes, playing with samsung galaxy s6 edge+, i completely fell in love with the design and went into sprint to trade my iPhone for an Edge+! I been using the Edge+ for about a month now and i have no regrets to be honest, i simply love it.
Now my curious question which surely has been answered numerous of time, what is the purpose of root on android devices? I understand that for IOS jailbreak offered access to manipulate certain features of the phone that were not intended otherwise. However, android offer customization from the start. So why else would i need to root my android device?
The only reasons i want to get root from the little bit of research ive done is to obtain more languages and remove bloatware. I want to install French and German languages for my phone (I'm studying both languages), as well as remove all the infamous bloatware the Samsung phones have. What rom would i need to be able to do both those things?
Also any other things i should get for my phone when rooting? Any help is appreciated! Help my Android switch journey become a fulfilled dream lol
I rooted my first phone an Samsung Galaxy S2 just because i didn't liked the audio qualtity when using headphones. There are still great apps like "viper4android" for this purpose. Then to remove ads. I still haven't rooted my S6 edge plus and the ads are driving me crazy.
After rooting you can rewrite your whole system with a different Rom & Kernel. It always feels like as if you have a new phone. Rooting is fun if you know what you are doing.
With root you can do a lot of things. Like installs new roms, kernels, audio "hacks"/tweaks and generally tweak almost everything. However you need knowledge for this are it comes with risks. If this phone is your primary phone I will suggest you to not root alter it in any way unless it's something really important. Ofc you can buy another cheaper phone and your secondary experimental phone but this will cost ofc. If you still want to proceed read guides. Read a lot. Read guides here on XDA and everywhere else. Rooting and flashing comes always with various risks.
You can disable bloatware without having root. Take a look: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note5/general/guide-bloating-touchwizzing-note-5-t3184563
That is a great idea, however my main reason for rooting is adding more language features for my phone. I want to be able to convert my phone from french to german to any other language i see fit. I would still need to root the phone unless there is another way for me to do that?

For that you dont need rooting. Simply go to settings -> language and input -> at language choose which one you want and the device will simply start using that language.
L9Hello guys and thanks for having me in your forums. This is my first post, I'm a big fan but I never registered, just lurked and read posts lol.
I've got a Samsung Galaxy J3 Emerge J327P from Virgin US, it's rooted using the method listed on this forum for it with TWRP and supersu, but I'd like to kill the bloatware, stop mother fuc*ing Google from always running location services stuff(I'll post screen shots) in running services under developer options, increase my battery life and generally soup up my phone a bit with cool stuff. I'm not some bad ass Hax3r elite script kiddy but the pentest apps have always fascinated me and I've got a few installed and they're helping me learn this old dog a few new things. but I'd also like some more that are ofc not gonna be on app store so if you have any of those as suggestions pls hook me up. Also custom Roms, what's the deal? Do they have any for my phone and what can they help, where do I get and how do I install? Now that I'm rooted does anyone have any suggestions what to do next?
I used to work for Motorola and Nextel back in the day as an entry level wireless engineer straight out of the Army, but that was freaking years ago and I'm pretty out of the loop. That being said I'm not a completely moron and I'm pretty handy with hardware and software and I've written a few apps which are one app store.... But I did that with some help and as a project for online classes I take in my dotage to stay busy. I'm catching on pretty quick here though and i think my experiences and schooling and what not could be a good asset to the underground communities if I take the time to learn.... And Also... well mostly...because Ii really like mobiles and wireless **** fascinates me so hook me up. Feed me knowledge and where to look and learn and I'll donate the 200 or so dinosaur brick sized phones bi have in storage to your museum lol.
thanks guys,

Srsly? 49 views yet not a single reply? Not even an insult cuz I wrote this High on pain pills? Wtf guys. Come on here and give a guy w hand. Tbf I figured out most of it on my own, I'm writing my own operating system here you all can have for free, since lineage isn't up. And yes I can do that. I'm old not stupid. I read this independent phone maker was making military grade tough bad ass smart phones, does anyone know they're name at least? Deleted my history. OR can help me kill some bloatware, or should I say tell me what is okay so I don't have to go through the steps doing it while I tinker out this code?
Sorry I can't be of help
Sorry that I have nothing to add on the ROM department, as I'm far less knowledge than yourself and about 98% of the individuals on here (the other 2%, smh. Just wow). The reason for me taking the time to reply is because A) I feel on the trying to teach an old dog new tricks; it takes me 20 minutes looking up what the meaning is of the lingo, then 40 minutes on how to implement it. Ironically I also worked for Sprint/Nextel but mine was the far less glamorous call center job. And totally random, & tbh with myself) none of my business, but I couldn't help but notice your mention about meds and regaurdless if it was one time thing, recent injury, old injury/condition, just whatever the situation look into (if your not familiar with it) mitragyna speciosa (kratom) its all natuarl plant, 100% legal (I think its 2 states miscategorized as a synthetic), its related to the coffee plant, and although its not perfect and not for everyone, its better than any pharmaceutical. There are quite a bit of Vets that are big advocates of this botanical. And sorry it's off topic (like 100%) but it changed my life, so I know it can for others too.

Don't take it personally, for the most part people here don't reply unless they have something constructive to add or say, it keeps the boards from getting flooded.
Since you're rooted I was going to suggest looking into porting, if you can get Lineage 14 running on your device (I have no idea what specs your model has off the top of my head to know what's possible for it) then it would give you a good jumpstart on porting 15 when that's released you could set up a race with the other J3 Devs and see who wins haha.
I seem to remember reading something about that phone too, iirc the article I read had it with a special case with Kevlar weave (which sounds badass on its own), I'll see if I can find any info on it again.
A lot of bloat can be eliminated by creating a nandroid backup (or TWRP if you have it) and taking it out that way, failing that titanium backup will let you get rid of a lot of bloat.
I just picked up a j327p for Sprint yesterday. I immediately wanted to flash Lineage onto it, but everything I'm seeing suggests that's not possible. (I wasn't able to do research before the purchase; it was an emergency replacement).
I found your post because I came here looking for the same information. I haven't flashed recovery onto my device yet, so I may try to return it to the store instead. It sounds like you got TWRP on there okay. Are you just stuck with the OS?
EDIT: there is this thread, which everyone in the universe was probably aware of but me, it just took me a bit to locate it: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...nt/wip-custom-rom-j3-emerge-sm-j327p-t3634206
I built a rom for Sprint / Virgin / Boost check it out
How do you flash a zip from twrp? I know how with Odin but I downloaded one of the custom roms from cad tried to flash without help but the only thing that seemed to change was my xposed wasn't installed anymore I must have done something wrong can someone show me what roms are best and give me instructions for flashing the right way
Hi,
Well, the thread name wasnt what i wanted but hopefully people find it interesting and check anyway
A couple years back when the S3 and S4 were new i used to do this to my phones, emui was what i installed.
Anyway, years have gone by and i remember exactly nothing of how to do it.
I have checked some videos ytube but it doesnt really feel 100% secure going just by a video for a samsung s4 or whatever samsung device they choose to show it with.
Anyway, what i want is to flash(correct term) ressurection rom on my phone.
Can you guys please help and maybe help me along the wathe phone this is about:
Swedish sold Samsung S5
Model number SM-G900F
android version 6.0.1
basebandversion G900FXXS1CQD (I think basebandversion is the correct term in english..=)
Is there anything else you know?
I would be very pleased if someone could warn me for differenet dangers and also other things to think about and also HOW TO do it either by writing it or linking to a place that is 100% verified to work. I DONT want to brick my 1600$reserve phone but i also want it to have a better look and feel more up to date so to speak.
I really admire the things you can do to your phone with resurrection ROM. Talk about what a possibility to make a little bit out of fashion phone up to fasion, MY fasion!
Please do remember i have done this before but that has left my memory totally blank regarding this.
I´m a newb i phone tech talk etc but im not dumb per se, computers and phones arent my thing, engines and building speakers and now im entering into the realm of building a power and pre amplifier so tech savvy i am, at my interests.
Phones, are phones. But i still like to have them work and look alot more better and a adore the ability to customise as much as is possible with ressurection rom.
Feel fre to post suggestions on other ROMs too!! Keep in mind that i do not game AT ALL. I call, sms, surf and such but dont do anything creating super high capacity speed. But i still dont whant a slow phone.
But main thing here is help in making my phone as customizable as possible.
Thanks//Mathias from Sweden
