App to keep my screen on - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Having just got the Galaxy S7 Edge, i've noticed that there's no option for "Never" for screen timeout, only a maximum 10 mins.
When my phone is in a cradle in the car, i use it for playing music & would like the screen kept on for the duration of the drive.
In the old days, on previous Android phones i used an app called Keep Screen On, but this now says it's incompatible with the S7 Edge, does anyone know of a good one that I could add my music player to as an exception, and it would keep the screen on. Ideally, i'd want the app to start at boot, so i don't have to open it every time i get into the car.
Many thanks.

There is an option to always keep the screen on.
Go into Settings>Developer's options and click
on "Stay Awake", Screen will never sleep while
charging and or when plugged into usb and the
computer or plugged into usb and your car.
Good luck,
Have a great day!

That's awesome. Thank you so much, I'll try that for my next drive.

Another solution is an app called "Gravity Screen" that will keep the screen on if it senses any motion at all... you could set it for the sensitivity of the car motion.
Another solution is Tasker, which can be used to automatically set your screen time-out whenever you are in your car.

Backlight switches off when using TomTom ?

My MDA Compact works beautifully with a BT GPS and TomTom 3....... except I have to keep touching the screen to keep it lit
Is there a way to stop this happening - actually is this normal or is mine broke !!??
You need to ensure the back light is not set to switch off after a certain amount of inactivity (yes, although tomtom is 'on' your pocket pc will not agree and will turn the back light off to save battery).
The solution really is to ensure your pocket pc is getting power.......
It's normal. I use Mbipocket (ebook reader), and even having the text scrolling up the screen won't stop the backlight turning off.
Dang !
How do you read your ebooks - by pressing the screen every few minutes ?
Something this obvious and they haven't fixed it !!
A simple tick box in the options menu isn't asking too much ??
So I guess the only way around it is to go into the backlight options and set it too stay on for 1 hour before turning off ...... wait, the maximum is only 5 minutes ..... I love Microsoft
????
very simple, watch under backlight, there you can adjust your settings...
the best is to buy a chargecable..and plug it in..
you mda will now charge , and navigate at the same time...

By tapping the screen every few minutes. Which as most of my ebook reading in dduring a 30 minute train journey to and from work, isn't much of a problem. And I've just realised that unticking the "turn off backlight" box means that it doesn't get turned off.
use TomTom4, the screen doesn't go off with that version
also BT is automaticly activated when starting TT4 when it was disabled in the systemtray.
TT4 r0x0r
Sweet !
TomTom 5 will be released in May - hopefully it will have those features included

Screen dims, but never shuts off

I just noticed this morning that when I hit the power button the screen only dims now. I swear it used to shut off the display completely before today, and I know for certain that is how it worked on 1.6. This really is annoying, because now when I put it in my pocket the 3 buttons are constantly being depresses and they vibrate, which lights the display again. That coupled with this stupid lock screen that I have to try to open 3-4 times is really making me angry. Maybe it's just me thugh.....
I'm assuming you upgraded to 2.1?
I remember reading somewhere that someone had a similar issue after upgrading to 2.1 but then they re flashed 2.1 a different way and problem went away.
Same issue here, it really eats up my battery life, and I do end up pushing those soft keys all-too often... I am on 2.1 and that is definitely when the problem started, I'm going to try reflashing to see if I can eliminate the issue.
try the steps found here on streaksmart.com. She reports that she has no issues when its done that way. I don't have my streak yet but will follow these steps when i get it.
I had a similar problem before, only the screen would go off and on again and stay on!
Turns out it was an APP that done this.
It is possible an app is causing the problem.

I've been experimenting with what's been causing this on mine, and I noticed that sometimes wifi will not shut all the way off. It hangs at "Turning off..."
So I tried not letting it sleep with wifi on, I turn it on if I need it, then turn it off (really a big pain in the butt) but went two days with no "no sleep" problems.
Today I tried leaving wifi on all the time, not two hours later it happened.
Since it's not happening to everybody, I wonder if it has something to do with our wifi setups. Maybe the router brand, or the encryption type, or something?
Last night I powered off the phone before better. I have wifi on all the time and I never shut it off. Today though, I have had no issues with the sleep function. It's still mid afternoon so we'll see if it continues this way. If so I will explore the wifi solution as well.
I was having this problem and somehow this setting was wrong:
SETTINGS>>APPLICATIONS>>DEVELOPMENT>>STAY AWAKE
mine was checked and we all know what that mean. Check yours to be sure if your not up for flashing again. Just a thought in case you overlooked this...

Yes, it means the screen will not time out and go off when it's being charged, but you can still turn it off, and mine wasn't plugged in when I couldn't turn it off.
I don't think this is related to what I've been seeing, but thanks.
It seems that Bluetooth did it today. I was fine all day going black on sleep with power button, but once I switched on wireless to connect to my car stereo it never went off again. Even if I turn off the wireless I have to shut down and reboot.

Same here. Started car and it showed zero signal strength for the phone on the dashboard display. Pressed the power button on the Dell Streak and the car display then displayed the signal strength. From then on, the screen would dim but not shut off.

Yes, and I couldn't turn it off once the "screen dim bug" took hold. Today I've rebooted and left Bluetooth OFF and Wireless ON and have not had an issue all day long, and that's making calls, using 3G, wireless and running a pile of apps. I think I can live with no Bluetooth until the next release.
Pete
I don't think it's BT. I think it's wifi not recovering properly from sleep mode.

Fair call. However, I've now had BT off for 6 hours and I'm using 3G, wireless and USB transfers and it hasn't hiccuped yet. This is the longest I've had with no screen dim bug.
I did notice that when I walked out to the car, the Streak could still "see" my home wireless network, then starting the car and the BT pairing and connecting is when the screen dim bug came back.
Maybe it's when both are run at the same time and both are connected/paired?

I agree its looks like its a wifi issue. I always keep my bluetooth off and it still did it.
I got mine fixed... but the problem is i did a bunch of steps and now cant figure out which one actually fixed it. its been running great for 12hrs now.
What I did, since I noticed that wifi sometimes didn't sleep or wake itself up properly all the time (which i think is what's affecting our Streak sleeping), was turn off the wifi sleep. In other words when my device shuts off wifi stays active.
However, I then used "Tasker" from the Market and setup two profiles. When the screen goes off it shuts off 3G, wifi and autosync. Then when the screen comes on it turns on 3g/wifi, waits 20 secs and enables autosync (which then initiates a mail/calendar/contacts sync).
This has worked perfectly, and I get mad good battery life to boot. Now this means I don't get mail/updates (facebook, weather, etc - still get calls and txts obviously) but for me it's not a big deal especially for the battery life.
I may eventually setup more Tasker events to duplicate "Juice Defender" and poll every half hour (3G only, when screen is off only) to get my updates, but for now it's been working great.
I also setup profiles so if I'm not where I have wifi pairings it shuts down wifi. Also if it detects I'm connected via wifi (at home for instance) it disables my lock screen. I also have it set to only start GPS for apps that need it (Maps, Navigation, Places, etc) and that helps save battery too.
Tasker is an awesome app for $3.99. It has a steep learning curve, but there are enough walk-throughs available to teach you how to do the basics.

Found the fix on Modaco. Have a look at the last page of the thread called "2.1 Bugs ....., Add what you find please....."
I never knew there was an "Advanced" menu for WiFi!
yeah that is not it. I also have mine set to never time out so does that mean it will never shut off either? Anyway, it keeps happening through the day. Wifi and bluetooth do seem to have something to do with it, but I need them both on all the time so the only thing I can do is reboot. Then it is good for a couple hours. Are the any apps that have a reboot? That's one thing I miss on the iPhone.

To keep the screen on you can go to Settings > Applications > Development and choose "Stay Awake".
You can also download Quick Settings (Free) from the market which will prevent dimming of the screen when "Stay Awake" is selected. Choose Never Timeout from the Quick Settings Device Timeout option.
it works on archos 101
Is there a program to leave the screen on ?
Thanks a lot

Did you try Quick Settings? All I can say is that the Xoom screen never turns off or dims if you select Never Timeout for screen timeout with this app. Does the Xoom screen stay on when the problem occurs? I have never tried connecting to TV so if this does not work, there is something else going on.
What does not work is the extinction of the screen. There is time and the maximum is 30 minutes
Or by what it includes only Xoom when plugged in?

AGAIN be more specific of the state of the Xoom when then issue occurs. Is the Xoom screen ON and BRIGHT when the problem occurs?
Quick settings with Never Timeout setting allows the Xoom screen to stay on and never turn off or dim. If this is working on the Xoom, are you still having the same issue?
The first problem was 2player
Your answer: lit screen
Second problem When I select stay awake there is another option timeouts and maximum 30 minutes
It's ok I find screen off timeout software Thank you for your help and effort to understand me

Nexus Player will blank out

Hi,
My nexus player sometimes just blanks out. Like when I switch to the HDMI input, there will be a no signal sign. Is this because it went to sleep or something? I am not able to bring it up again. Only way is to turn off the plug and switch on again, then it works fine till I dun touch it again for a few hours and it happens again. There are times when, even though I left an app running over night and switch off the TV when I switch on the TV in the morning, it shows exactly where I left off. So I am not exactly sure what is going on.
Anyone has experienced something like this?
Thanks.
This happened to me yesterday had to unplug, but today I kept hitting the remote buttons and it eventually came back from sleep or whatever you wanna call it.

I'm experiencing the same and I've just posted a new thread about that.
On my TV the image goes blank for few seconds then return back without any operation from me.
I've the 5.1.1 non root on my device and I'm using the hdmi cable I was using on a win without any issue.
The input port in the TV is the same I was using with a Chromecast.

Two questions about the LGV20..

1 - Screen turn off time.. is that for the little screen also? I have my device to always be on. I'll turn it off when I want, but the little screen never shuts off. I'd hate to be wasting battery unnecessarily.
2 - I don't need Facebook, Instagram, Amazon, etc, etc, the list goes on.. I certainly don't need any Sprint apps.
All these freakin notices.. Amazon Music is now called Prime Music.. or whatever. Who cares.
Any way to get rid of them without root? Or shall I wait for a reliable root?
I just got my LG V20 tonight with Sprint. After going over my data last month with Project Fi ($120 bill) I now have unlimited for $50.

As far as I know,
1. the secondary display you can set it up to when it turns off based on time, or just flip the phone over and the display will turn off.
2. for the apps, if you cannot disable them, then the next choice is to root the device and freeze or delete the apps.

You can turn off the second screen when the main display is off, no need to run it especially if your not using it *and it does affect your battery life* and the only way to get rid of those apps is to disable it or root and get rid of it once and for all. There is a legitimate root guide that you can follow and has proven itself. Up to you though.
You can turn off the second screen by going onto settings search for second screen, tap it and you can set the second screen off either when the main screen is on or off or both.

Yes, but it would be nice if I could set the second screen to also go off after XX amount of time.. like a separate value than the main screen. I'll suggest it to LG. This way I can have the main screen never time out (I'll turn press the button on the back to turn it off) and the little screen can be set to timeout in say 5 mins.
Random input....
I've never set my second screen to turn off on either my v20 or my v10 and I've never had any battery issues with it.
That is to say... This phone has incredible standby battery.
The v10 is not quite as good battery wise when in use (main screen on) but standby? (only second screen on) it's wonderful!
Personally, I'd suggest to use the second screen and don't worry about battery use. I've found it to be negligible.
It's too handy not to use!
