Long time creeper first time user here. I was in the market for a new phone and had it down to the S7 Edge and the Note 5. The only issue I'm having though is even though I put all my phone's in cases I'm worried the exposed edge could be an issue even if dropped with a case on. I lean a little more to the Note 5 because of this. I'm curious if anyone could give me feedback on either phone since being made of glass front and back is easy to crack even in a case and if the S7 edge is more susceptible with the edge screen.
Well the S7 edge does have gorilla glass 4 which is pretty tough, but not bullet proof. I had the same problem in deciding between the S7 and the edge version, I don't care for the edge much but the battery life is better, that's why I went with it. I thought to myself, how often do I really drop my phone where it could break the screen? I never used a tempered glass screen protector on any of my previous phones except my s5, and that was a year into owning it. Out of all of those phones I only broke one screen, all due to my own anger while I was in the military.
There's a good post here on XDA that lists cases for the S7 edge, with pictures and links. You can be the judge on which will suit you if you decide to go that route.
Hope this has helped you, and either way you can't go wrong.
I own an S7 edge and purchased the Spigen case for it. Well I dropped my phone by accident earlier this week and it landed on the screen-side. The case has a small lip on the upper and lower sides of the case so when the phone hits. The lips take the impact. Definitely recommend the case.

I agree with WhataM about Spigen cases. The screen is Gorilla Glass 4, which means that it has better scratch resistant than most other phones. People tend to misunderstand the difference between scratch resistance and shatter resistance. Kind of like how they misunderstand IP68 as being waterproof, when it is more water resistant.
Get yourself a good case like Spigen, whose cases tend to extend past the screen, and you should be ok. I have cases for my iPhone 6s, S7E, and 6P and have not had one shattered screen.

Not to argue with you, more like being informative, but the IP (International Protection) code IP68 does mean it is waterproof essentially.
IPXY
X=Solid Particle Protection (0-6)
Y=Liquid Ingress Protection (0-9)
IP68 means Dust Tight (No Ingress of dust) and Immersion Beyond 1 meter (Continuous immersion in water at a depth generally up to 3 meters [Water can enter but it produces no harmful effects])
There is only 1 rating higher and that is IP69K which can withstand powerful high temperature water jets.

Read the forum and you'll find out that, regardless of rating, the phone is not as waterproof as you might think it is. There are more than a few people who have suffered water damage, and Samsung's warranty does NOT cover water damage.
And it's not just "high pressure (not temperature) water jets" that are excluded by IP68. That rating is for immersion in still, plain water. Just taking it into the shower with you exceeds the IP68 rating, as do waves, salt water, chlorinated water (e.g., swimming pools), holding the openings under a faucet, and more. And even the "greater than 1 meter" still water test is for a max of 30 minutes.

Yes! People do not understand the meaning of the appendage of "proof" to words. Waterproof would mean that no water can enter, no matter the circumstances. If water can enter after any situation, then it has failed its resistance to water. Thus, water-resistant is the more correct description of the phone. There are a lot of videos online of people testing their phone after immersing it in water and there are problems.

I have this case. And recommend it, very sturdy and protective.
Although no case offers complete protection.
Was just walking through town, reading the news and my device slips abit out of my hand (Never had a firm grip just flicking through news)
As i felt the device slip from my hand, i quickly respond (Maybe abit aggresive in the way i attempted to)
But i tried to catch the device, Being a little aggresive in the movment and catch i ended up catapulting the device 7ft in the air.
I watched as it fell to the floor in slow motion screen down first.
While the deice never hit perfectly in the screen side, it went down edge ways.
Not enough protection, so now my device has lots of scratch marks along the edge side.
It does not impair the device visually, but its frustrating to see them there every time.
Could of been prevented maybe with a screen protector.
But after using these for years and loosing a level of quality and responsiveness from the screen, I passed putting one on my edge
(as my note 3 survived 2 years without one and screen is scratch free)
These are the prices we pay.
But Spigen survived a nice hefty drop (twice i have done this, and its taken a nice impact damage on the case to show how hard it must of hit the floor)
The very corner when i first dropped it, and a couple of marks on the lips from when i just done it about 30 minutes ago
I use this case https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01DCGNH1W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Superbly made and total all-round protection without screensavers so still showing off the lovely curves.

Had my new ATT Nexus 6 for not even two weeks and one small drop and BOOM ...entire screen shattered. What's sad is I have the Spigen slim case armor and it didn't protect it. I dropped it about 3 feet...on tile floor...landed flat on its back. I now have to fork out $200 bucks for a new one via ATT insurance. I just ordered a tempered glass protection for the screen hoping that this will help. Just a warning...these are very very fragile.

Well realistically most mainstream phones are fragile, that's just the consequence of having a large glass display. It's really the luck of the draw of how it falls. My phone was naked (without any case) with a ill fitted tempered glass protector (due to curved screen) and it fell out of my pocket from about 2 feet onto a concrete floor and basically nothing happened to it. Realistically just some light scratches on the tempered glass and a very slight mark on the metal band.

Oh, I thought the slim was that dumb clear plastic one. Kinda odd that your phone broke in that case from that height. I would say you just got unlucky.
Does anyone know if the slim is stronger than the neo hybrid?
Sorry to hear man. I never drop phones but it can happen to anyone. Reading all these small drop stories has me extra careful.

I've had neo hybrid on my last 3 phones, note 3, nexus 5, and nexus 6. Many drops and my phone has always survived.
That's one reason why i ordered from play store. I have heard they replace it free of cost even if you accidentally shatter your screen.
Don't mind the troll, nothing but a troublemaker, I already reported his posts, this is a community to help each other and exchange information, not to give each other garbage. The OP was doing his job by looking out for us due to his unfortunate event.
To the OP, sorry to hear about your N6, we'll take your experience quite seriously as I'm sure there are others that has their screen shattered from a few feet of a drop
I don't think the outcome would have been any different with the Neo Hybrid. Both cases look pretty solid.
This is just one of those freak accidents that can be caused by a number of factorsl
$200 deductible for phone is just plain ridiculous.. Plus $10 per month... In the future I suggest SquareTrade for your insurance especially for accidental damaged.. I pay only 4.50 per month and the deductible is only $75... The only positive of these carriers insurances it covers theft but of course that's probably why you're paying double then what Square Trade charges
So just to clarify: you dropped your phone from chest height (on an small person), or waist height (on a taller person), onto ceramic tile, and you're angry at the phone manufacturer for making a "fragile" product? You are insane.
First off, gorilla glass is scratch resistant, not crack or shatter resistant. So there's no help there. Second, 3 feet is a huge distance for a heavy device covered in glass to fall. In case you're not so great at Physics, at this distance, your giant glass coated rectangle is travelling at roughly 10 mph by the time it smashes into your ceramic tile floor, which on the Mohs Harness Scale ranks a 7 out of freaking 10 (diamond is a 10). For perspective, this is the same speed that the average, non-professional cyclist flies down the street. Now imagine him plowing into a solid ceramic wall. (Yes, the mass is different, but the comparison serves).
In other words, you are either an entitled, petulant 12 year old child, or as poster #2 so crudely put it, you are literally retarded.
EDIT: It occurs to me that yes, glass is at around the same level on a Mohs scale. So while it isn't that ridiculous a difference, it's still at the appropriate hardness to shatter a glass object.
I didn't buy any of the spigen cases because to me they didn't look very protective. They are good looking cases tho!

You sir are ignorant. The moh's scale is a relative scale for scratch resistance relative to minerals. You, sir, are referring to brittle deformation and are in the wrong realm of mineral physics. So don't condescend people unless you know what you are talking about. Us geoscientists use moh's scales to identify other minerals based on scratching other objects in the field.
You're also referring to conservation of momentum and all kinds of stuff and your argument is all over the place. Yes, when your phone hits the ground m1v1=m2v2 has to be in play, but this isn't a wall and a human being,. A phone is pretty solid, and when glass breaks it's brittle deformation. Your phone bounces off the ground a little. The other parts of your phone may have plasticity. If interested, research into the difference between plastic and brittle deformation. Your glass doesn't break just because it hits something with a relative moh's hardness. It can break falling on grass.
Anyways, yeah holding a iPhone 4 compared to the Nexus 6, this thing is a beast, but I love it's big size. Sorry your screen broke OP! Serves as a warning cases don't solve everything!
Sorry to hear. The fact is... No matter the phone... If dropped just the right way... It will break. You can't escape this. Just gotta be careful.
I hope they make phones bigger, thinner and more fragile so all of you could learn to take care of it better.

Man im sorry. Ive been lucky and only shattered my N7 screen and ive had alot of phones. i had the slim armor on my N6 and it got launched across my bathroom at work and hit the wall and floor and somehow survived.
Hey guys,
I have a Z3C. Love the phone obviously. It's awesome. I had my phone on the top of my desk, it fell to my keyboard tray maybe 6 inches lower and the screen shattered. I've read on the web that similar durability issues plague the Z3C. I'm wondering if your experiences with the Z3 have been similar. Can the Z3 withstand minimal abuse like what killed my Z3C, or it is similarly susceptible? Thanks
I've dropped my Z3 about 5 times already including on tile and asphalt and its not even scratched... Probably has to do with the plastic / rubber corners, does the compact design have that?
I've dropped my Z3 over five times and the glass is in perfect condition. I had tempered glass on for two of the attempts it fell and only the nilken tempered glass shattered. The nylon corner bumps work pretty well in ensuring that the Z3 is durable and shatter resistant. Although I did get scared at first (hence why I bought the tempered glass), my worries were completely unfounded and my Z3 is still in perfect condition (aside for small marks on the nylon corners).
I would say that if you drop the phone flat on the ground with the glass hitting the ground first, you will probably suffer. If you are planning to replace it, get a case to feel more secure. Otherwise, if you want to keep the aesthetics of the phone, get a tempered glass and you can feel at ease.
I've dropped mine numerous times and it survived. Keeping it in my back pocket broke the glass...

As my luck has it, the first three days of my Z3 in my ownership saw it fall at least 5 times, two of them from a desk's height and on the floor tiles. It only sufferd minimal nicks on the bronze finish, nothing else. Can't wait for the tempered glass and the TPU case I ordered alongside the phone to arrive...
It's crazy... most of my friends have galaxy phones and they've had so many cracked screens issue. In 4 smartphones I've owned, starting with LG G2x, and Z, Z1S, and now Z3, my phones have never cracked. I also use no case.
Guess i'm lucky?
Mine has come through a couple of drops unscathed, dropped from hip height on marble with no case, only standard screen protector

No cracks but I got a pretty big scratch on the screen within my first week and I never ever put it in a pocket or in a bag with other items. Since then I got one of the nillkin glass screen protectors. Not a scratch on it and I'm far less careful with it now. Why couldn't Sony just use the glass Nillkin uses?
I wonder if I can pay Sony to replace my screen down the line for a fee. Then I wouldn't worry so much.
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sou..._51nTw5q_mTI85ZtA&sig2=x_c947kpk-ERsY-I533rVg
I dropped mine from a chair onto a patio which is like concrete and apparently hit the corner of the phone. It cracked the corner of the back glass about an inch radially. I used some glass glue and covered it up. Its fine now still waterproof.
Sony's lame, the back should have been carbon fiber for shock proofing and the edges should have ridges for grip. When I first got it it was so slippery it was ridiculous.
Funny enough, 5 minutes after I cracked the back somebody gave me a really nice leather case for it.

I love the slippery cool glass slick feel. I would not settle for anything else. Since my iPhone 4s, the Nexus 4 and now this, I realise i'm addicted to these materials. I have dropped mine but always on carpet, no damage thank God. My brother dropped his uncountable times and onto wood floor and tile etc with no cracked glass, just metal rim damaged and scuffed.
I haven't dropped mine and do not have a case nor any screen protection. I don't excessively wipe the phone down but do wipe it when the fingerprints begin to bug me. I phone mostly wipes itself when inserting/removing from my pocket.
I've had the device or about 1.5-2 months and baby it.
The screen has zero micro scratches or any other permanent marks, but the rear panel has micro scratches from simply being placed on a hard, smooth, CLEAN surface like a table. I don't slide the phone across surfaces and put down/pick up the phone very carefully so it doesn't slide/scrape across any surface.
So while the screen appears to be fairly scratch resistant, my experience is that the back becomes easily scratched even when taking the utmost care.
My phone is black which shows these scratches more easily than a lighter color would.
I've had mine for a few months and dropped it several times, but my luck ran out today. Cold, slushy parking lot + road salt was apparently the last straw...
Have you heard of glass protection and cases? I've dropped my Z1 many times and no issues, applying the same protection to Z3.

I had a Terrapin case and a Rhino Shield screen protector on it, but while the screen protector only had a couple.. what feel like small puncture holes? , the screen itself was completely shattered.
My rear Glas cracked today for amusingly no reason.
We'd just been out to walk the dog, as we came back an put our phones on the table, we heard a cracking sound but couldn't picture where it came from. As I went over to pick up my phone we saw all the cracks all across the rear.
How could this happen, I doubt through the difference in temperature, although it really was cold outside today.
It's a really expensive device and I am really upset about this right now. How can the glas, even if it is just the rear, crack out of appearingly no reason???
Probably from the temperature difference? Live in Minnesota but have not suffered from it so far though I have heard many instances like yours. Another XDA member got a free replacement, try talking to Sony.
I actually guess it really is from.the temperature difference.
Already spoken to my retailer about this, they're picking the device up tomorrow for a free repair or replacement.
Also confirmed that there a a lot of devices with such a problem. I thought they had enough experience by now with glas fronts and backs.
It really is upsetting
Well that's good, no worries. In fact BBC's Watchdog program did an investigation for the Z1 or Z2 for the same problem after many people complained to them. Sony agreed the issue exists and said they will do free replacements as long as it's only "a single fine crack" at the time. I think they are not so picky now.
Currently I'm using an S5 without any cases or covers, and it's still drop-proof, dropped it multiple times on hard floor/concrete and there is no damage on the screen what so ever. And before that I had an HTC One X, which is probably more similar to the Edge in that the screen isn't protected if it drops face down, I did eventually crack it with that kind of a drop. However the edge is gonna be even more problematic because even the back is glass, and no plastic protruding edge to protect it.
Sure I could put it in a bulky case but then it kind of defeats the purpose of having one of the most premium feeling phones ever doesn't it? It'll also negate any ergonomic benefits of the curved back edge as well as the ease of edge swipe on the front edge. Might as well just get something like a.... I don't know, nobody makes high end plastic phones anymore now days, even cheap phones like One Plus is front+back curved glass. Also this thing is already a bigger phone than what I'm used to, adding a beefy case is just gonna make it that much bigger, which I do not like.
Well I guess plenty of people did survive the iPhone 4 glass sandwich era just fine, I'll just have to wish myself luck. I wonder how much would one of those adhesive skins help in a drop situation. Sure they are very thin but if think about the physics of it, gorilla glass is actually quite flexible so it doesn't break from the acceleration of the impact itself, so thinness doesn't really matter. What actually breaks these surface hardens glass is usually a microscopic failure on the surface developing into a big crack. And those microscopic failures can happen when they make contact with sharp hard stuff like individual sand particles, they effectively puncture the surface and develop a weakness. So if you have a skin on the glass, what'll hopefully happen instead is that the skin will be thick enough for the particle to not make direct contact with the glass, and prevent breaking. Even though such thin skins cannot significantly reduce the impact acceleration.
I understand your points, but please, don't ever try to use this phone naked. You NEED a case, the grip is so bad that dropping it is almost a guarantee and the back glass seems to be much more fragile than the front glass from what I have seen in videos. About the cases, you may want to look into the Samsung official plastic backs or (when available) the leather backs. The official plastic back cases from Samsung are the only ones (in my opinion) that really do not ruin the phone's design, the design remains almost intact. However, while the grip is much improved over the naked phone, it is nowhere near other bulky and rubberized cases. A rubberized plastic wrap would be a solution, but the big problem still remains - the metal sides of the phone which are very narrow.
PS: As I understand from the latest spy pics, the iPhone 7 will have a glass back again...probably needed for radio/charging/payment/other secret developments.
There are plenty of case available that won't make the phone look s**t. I'm using a Spigen Crystal Clear, a very good combination of protection and looks. It's impossible to completely keep the phone's look and feel, but it's probably as close as possible whilst being confident of being able to accidentally drop it from pocket height without damage.
Glass protectors on these curved screens are to be avoided, that's my personal opinion anyway. My brother bought numerous types of these for his S6 Edge (expensive and cheap) and not one went on properly without raising on the curves within twenty minutes, causing touch problems on the edges. Go for a good quality film type like a Zagg HD Dry.
I copied you entirely mate I'm not ashamed to say. Got my Spigen Crystal Clear yesterday and, your right, it does look good, but not as good as the nekkid phone itself. But I guess that's the price of good protection.
Just waiting for my Zagg HD Dry front and back covers to arrive today.
I'm personally using Otter Box Commuter for me and my wife's phone. I was able to try it on in store before purchasing. I was sort of desperate for a case on delivery day and it was the most protective case I found. I'm happy with it overall. It's sleep and slim and although the whole front in uncovered it does have raised top and bottom edges so if the phone falls flat the screen doesn't actually touch the floor.

I would love to use the phone naked as it just looks so good, but I am scared to risk it. I have never dropped and cracked a phone, and I had an Iphone 4S without a case for 2 years which were well known for getting smashed, I have a clear case on the edge at the moment to offer it some protection.
Carrying and using smart phones without any case is just asking for trouble. I have the S7 Edge and when it arrived on March 2nd it stayed at home in the box until my Spigen Ultra Hybrid case arrived (which was a few days later). I was still using my S5 because I didn't want to take any chances.
After my case arrived I put it on but I still keep the original plastic film on the screen because I was waiting for my Skinomi screen protector to arrive. My Skinomi arrived yesterday and I installed it last night.
So if you don't want a bulky case get the Spigen Ultra Hybrid (I went with the crystal clear color). I ordered my case and screen protector from Amazon. The case is very nice looking and doesn't add any bulk to the phone.

Q.E.D.
Hey guys,
So a bad day!! My s7 edge fell out of my hand when getting out of my car in a mall parking lot and fell face first. I picked it up and saw the whole front screen is shattered, 3 web cracks and the crack goes all the way to the edge. It was even in a case....is the phone this fragile? Don't remember my note being like that, it dropped from a higher height and it never cracked? Anyway should I just go for fonelab to repair it or try asurion? I am in Canada. I really hope the s8 isn't as fragile. Using the nexus 6p at the moment.
It's actually Gorilla Glass 5. The problem with Gorilla Glass 5 is that while it retains the scratch resistance of 4, it's thinner and lighter, which sacrifices overall strength. Since nowadays slimmer and lighter phones are the ones that sell and reviewers will bash your flagship if it's heavy and thick, this is what happens.
You could try looking into Motorola for your next phone. They're not using Gorilla but an im house produced glass that's advertised as shatterproof.
Sent from my Galaxy S7 Edge Duos via Tapatalk
Actually, it's Gorilla Glass 4: https://www.corning.com/gorillaglas...h-gorilla/samsung/samsung-galaxy-s7-edge.html
I think the curved edges do make this screen more fragile than other phones. Not because the glass is any more fragile, but because the edge design makes it more likely the glass will impact something when you drop the phone. But every impact is unique. You could drop a phone onto concrete multiple times without problems, then drop it from a lower height onto a wood floor, and have it hit just right and shatter.
Are you already paying for Assurian insurance? If so, why not use it? See how much getting it repaired costs compared to Assurian's deductible.

Hey guys,
So a bad day!!

Sorry about the mishap man. It happened to me several months ago while leisurely cycling. The phone was in an LED cover, out of which popped out upon hitting the road easier than a soap bubble. I guess I was lucky enough that only the back glass cracked and the front screen wasn't damaged. But that too made me think that these glasses are way much more fragile than what is being advertised. I'd rather think of it as "potato chips" glass rather than "gorilla" glass.

I will be looking into build quality for my next phone for sure but I am waiting for MWC because I am still partial to the note series.

Is GG5 thinner than both 4 or 3? I swear my note 7 was pretty sturdy, it survived a drop on wood floor. I am paying only $10/month on my dad's and sisters line so i have to go through their line which I am the account holder anyway. They said its $149 but they do not guarantee the same device. Depends on stock. Also I don't think refurbished units guarantee IP68 anymore either, so idk. Does samsung repair screens if I contact a service center? Maybe they will preserve the ip68 rating?

It surprised me! I usually don't drop phones, and for the odd chance I do, all my phones survived accept this one....

Yes im paying for asurion on all my lines . The deductible is $149 CDN plus tax. Though it depends on the stock and what available to them. I might get a similar device and it could be new but no garuentees. The thing that worries me a bit is it the phone I get will retain ip68 and if it will have scratches since I kept good care of my device .
Sorry if this is obvious, i have a thin crack in my screen just one, i see videos of the glass replacement and apparently thats something between the glass and the display and i want to know if my Galaxy still water resistant, cause it's seems that it is because of that.
Thnks everyone, and sorry for this nuub question XD.
Not obvious at all. Very understandable question. Unfortunately, it is not so simple.
1. I don't think that there are any official answers to this as Samsung would not want to be held liable even if it is still resistant.
2. The extent of resistance may be reduced by an unknown/ variable amount even if it did keep resistance.
3. It would vary on many other factors e.g. would the layer inside ruin with water? Is the layer inside also cracked?
There may be people who say that their's is still resistant with a crack, but their crack and testing may be different to yours.
I personally would not test it out. I don't even test out the resistance on my intact s7 edge. If you want to guarantee water resistance, get the screen repaired by official Samsung.
Even if it is a small crack, you do not know how deep (how many layers) went. Moreover, you don't know (neither do we) if the layer below the crack is water resistant or not.
And as mentioned above, Samsung will not take the responsibility and the blame for such an issue.
