So where is HTC and Samsung with their GE 4.3 updates? Day 1 and counting, curious if it will be days, weeks or longer.

It will probably take them at least a month (unfortunately)
The 'Very Soon' didn't really sound like 'In a couple days'. I may agree with above. About 2-4 weeks is my prediction (purely speculation)
If I bought a GE I'd almost feel like I got duped - considering the major selling point was the timely stock updates.
2-4 weeks is timely compared to how it works now.

It does suck for those who actually got fooled with the GPe devices. It SHOULDN'T take them that long as they clearly have been working on it since the leaks have surfaced. I'm just ready to laugh when we see a partially working AOSP 4.3 build up before HTC releases the official OTA.

And here I am with the Developer Edition still on 4.21! Now that's a real dupe

changed. This is my last HTC phone.

Well it only has been a couple hours since they announced it. The whole point of the GE was to get updates similar to the Nexus devices and if HTC can at least release it this week i will be happy . If not, this (sadly) is my last HTC phone as i have had several bad experiences with them already (but that is a whole different topic).
My window to return is today, so I may opt to return it, in favor of waiting to see what the Moto X announcement will be.
If that turns out to be a mediocre device then I may just opt to hop back on the One.
My biggest issue is paying $640 and not getting updates for weeks, but as already said here, it's only been a few hours lol.
4.3 doesn't sound like much of an update. A lot of little stuff, not much of which will be apparent to the user unless you let your kids use your phone all the time.
How fast this gets rolled out to the GE phones is not something to get exercised about, IMO.

To be honest i don't think the Moto X will be any better as far as updates go. It will most likely ship with 4.3, but it is also a big step back as far as specs go (according to the leaked spec sheets)

I mostly care about the performance improvements. Other than that i won't use any of the multi-user features (i think that is pretty much the only new "feature" added as everything else seems to be under the hood optimizations and/or improvements.)
Disregard.

I quote from the GPe web page:
Unlock the latest and greatest from Google with the best smartphone for you.
Booming audio and an awesome camera in a sleek package, now featuring the latest version of Android from Google.
The latest in Android.
The Google Play edition phones automatically receive updates of the latest Android software. Optimized for the latest apps, more storage for your content and a fast, clean user experience all come standard.
Always want the latest and greatest? Upgrade your handset with no carrier commitment or contract.
Edit: it may not be HTC/Samsung saying it directly, but it is in fact on the actual device page and it repetitively says you will have the latest and greatest updates from Google.

Thanks, I've edited my post. I found a few news stories as well about it. I hope it actually comes true.
So saw this on a tech news site I frequent, kind of jealous of them since I like Sense and will be sticking to ROMs based of that. But the 4.3 update will roll out for the Google Edition phones. At the very bottom of the article.

I'd be willing to put my money on CyanogenMod or AOKP having 4.3 out first. However, the whole point of the Google Editions was to get an almost Nexus experience. If HTC takes more than two or three weeks, it's a complete fail.
I'm hoping to see it within a week, but I'm definitely not counting on it.

AOSP will be 100% faster than HTC / Google to update the GE for sure.
I am really curious about the 4.3 AOSP update, maybe some 4.2.2 AOSP bugs will get ironed out automatically since it has a bunch of driver updates and a new bluetooth stack (read -> BT incall issues).

Totally agree anything but a very fast update from both Samsung or HTC will only further piss off customers who brought it thinking they would get more timely updates.
Nice and easy if you want the fastest updates get a nexus or a custom rom nothing else comes close imho.

Exactly. I want a stock 4.3 kernel that "just works" and I don't want to worry about problems. I don't mind waiting a few weeks for it. 4.3 isn't even a big update.
I have a Google Edition and paying $640 for a phone, you'd expect them to at least have some kind of announcement of when that will be rolled out. If it will take weeks, I can deal with that, but not knowing is not making me happy either.
I knew going into it that it wouldn't be instant, but I also didn't expect it to be a non-existent date like any other update.
I'm strictly speaking OTA btw, and not custom roms.

At least they say that GE Ones will get 4.3 before Sense Ones. I assume it's less work for them given how similar the GE ROM is to the Nexus ROMs vs all the extra crap they have to update with Sense.
The question is how much HTC will prioritize the GE phones, given that it must be a small percentage of the Ones they sold (little do they know that quite a few of the "Sense" phones people bought have been converted to "GE" phones ).

Yeah, I was mostly kidding. My point is more that, while they probably know, they will act like they don't know (refuse to acknowledge or support converted phones).
Especially because they will have to make assumptions about the number of phones out there running Sense vs GE and will likely do that purely based on sales numbers (which don't take into account any converted phones).
The HTC One, will for sure be behind on updates considering the Nexus is the Google line. Nexus first then S4 then the One. Money market system.. we all know Apple and Samsung lead that pack.. HTC is behind Sammy. That's how I will see it coming.

That's completely ridiculous. Even without having to adapt Sense or go through a kafka-esque certification process like Verizon certification, HTC still needs to perform integration testing before issuing the update. Any joe blow can hack together an untested build and put it out on the net.

This isn't carved in stone but according to this article if we're waiting for HTC and/or carriers we'll have to wait until March or April for Lollipop. It looks like we'll also have to wait until then for the Eye Experience update. I know there are a few people that are going to be upset at that news. They were hoping the 4.4.4 update w/ Eye Experience would make waiting 4-5 months after Lollipop release a bit easier.

Arrgh. I just bought an HTC Desire 816 last week, so I'm not yet all that familiar with how it works. My question is, is there any way to PREVENT Lollipop from being installed on my phone? I've been reading a lot of messages about substantial problems even with 5.0.2. Admittedly, some people are happy with it, but others most definitely are not. I've decided to keep my Nexus 7 (2013) tablet on KitKat 4.4.4, even though I have a notification that 5.0.2 is ready to be installed. I'd hate to run into problems with my phone, especially since it's not rooted and isn't likely to be rooted. So do upgrades work the same on the HTC Desire 816 as they do on the Nexus 7, namely, I get a notification and can decide whether or not to install the upgrade, or is the upgrade simply installed without my permission?

Funny you ask, as I also have a Nexus 7 2013 that I've kept on KitKat. However I did it because no Lollipop ROM's have anywhere near the amount of goodies as KitKat ROM's.
However that being said, the Desire 816 will NOT run stock Lollipop 5.0.2. In fact far from it. HTC will change stock Android around plenty (in fact they are currently, that's why the update is taking months) before they release it to our phones. Not to say everything will be ironed out, but most things. Plus Lollipop is still sort of new, so in the coming months a lot will be fixed with it.
Anyways to answer your question, yes, you can opt out of the Lollipop update on your phone just as you have with your Nexus 7.
ofcourse you are given the choice to install it or not. but it's not like it's right around the corner(the release for 816 is atleast a couple months later) and hopefully many bugs will be fixed until then
Thanks very much, FoxyDrew and seekfind, for your reassuring replies. I'm hoping that the version that HTC offers us will be relatively problem-free, in which case I'll install it, but I'm glad that 1) it's still months off and 2) I'll have a choice of whether or not to accept it.

Sprint M7 has Lollipop
Is our Device more like an M7 or M8? according to HTC.com, the Sprint M7 has completed Lollipop integration/certification. We have Virgin Mobile, what's really the difference?) . Can the rom be ported with Sense 6? (CM12 is good, but missing the HTC Style, and too many bugs for me to go back to it).

Our device isn't the One 8 or the One 7. It's the Desire 816. Nothing like the other two hardware wise.
Anyways a port could be possible, but it would take a developer willing to do it. Most likely won't happen since were getting the update within a month or two.

The Website says, "This Device is currently on Kit Kat." Our VM Desire 816 used to be in the "Evaluation" stage, then just dropped off the list of any indication of a Lollipop update. We shall see. Figured it would be easier to integrate Sense 6.

No.if they update , then one plus will not earn money..
V might get cm14 ... at least unofficially
I think we could all agree on the point that the OnePlus One will get the official CM nightlies. If Cyanogen Inc. is going to update the OPO depends on the user base. (Source: COS 13 thread OP Forums..) Steve Kondik said, with a reason, that they totally rebased the OnePlus One with the COS 13 update, a part of the reason why they did that is that it would make faster OS updates in the future possible.
I believe in the CyanogenMod guys, I think that officially we'll never see Android 7 on the phone, but unofficially I'm pretty confident.
It is evident that Cyanogen Inc is pushing Microsoft mods pretty dramatically to OPO with at least the latest COS 13.1 update.
They will definitely use this phone for the large user base to check for the usage pattern, and other statistics for creating a better baseline and user experience for MOD going forward. And obviously, Microsoft also has an interest in having more people use their "integrated" apps and OPO is very good device for that.
So my opinion is a STRONG YES, Cyanogen Inc WILL update to Android N, but again, 3 months after the first release.

Usually cyanogen stops support after 2 years, just like Google does. OPO could be an exception, both because the snapdragon 801 is still a pretty popular processor and because the phone itself is still rocking. but nothing is sure on this side.

If we're taking a look at the contract for the updates, then the official support ended at the end of May. But as Steve Kondik said, they'll be updating the OPO to Android N if the userbase is large enough (COS). And the official CM Nightlies will continue even a few years after the official support ends. So one way or another, we'll be seeing Android N on the OPO.

It's not really true that Google stops supporting their phones after 2 years actually. Google keeps updating the device if the hardware is still good enough for it. That's one of the reasons the Nexus 5 still receives security patches, just like the Nexus 7 (2013).

I'm preaty sure we will get the Official update from Cyanogen Inc!
If you look at Cyanogen Inc official page, our phone IS THE ONLY PHONE currently running their latest OS (COS13.1).
The Oneplus One was the first well known Cyanogen Phone, and they wont abandon it's first child.
I think we will be updated until google stops supporting its Nexus 6 (SD 805), because it was the last nexus with a 32 bit CPU and Android will soon abandon the 32 bit architecture complitly (my opinion).
Untill then we are safe.
I expect to see Nougat custom ROMs very quickly, eventually, CM14 nightlies, but I expect that there will never be an official Nougat update for the OnePlus One.
Does this apply to other phones having the SD 801 too? I'm planning to buy the Zuk Z1 which has a SD 801. If the OPO receives CM14, is there a possibility of the Zuk Z1 receiving CM14 too?
Even if OPO doesn't get official update, the fan base of this phone and the impact it did to both 1+ and Cyanogen, I think we will still find a way to get nice and crisp Nougat experience. But who knows. Time will tell

You sir are a visionary (about the oreo name ;p)
[HYPE]
Canadian Telecom provider Telus leaked that Nougat is going to be released this monday 22 August.
They were spot on last year with the Marshmallow release.
Excited!! :fingers-crossed:

Why couldn't samsung simply rip out the spen junk from the note rom and release it on our phones?
Because they're working on Oreo

That's not a valid excuse, 7.1 came out in oct 2016, 7 months later the s8 was released with an os that came out in august 2016.
These are not midrange phones, we deserve better.

So what is your complaint exactly? You're angry about the fact that we didn't get a rom then, even though we're getting the latest version now? You knew about it, bought it, then came here to complain about it 7 months or so afterwards?
What was so important that changed from 7.0 to 7.1? I have a feeling you're just looking to whine about anything possible
My complaint is pretty clear, not sure why you can't see it.
When Android 7.1 was released, it was seen as a Nexus/Pixel exclusive with pixel-only exclusives. It's more surprising that the Note 8 did come with Android 7.1 than the S8 not getting an update. Most skinned manufacturers decided early on to skip 7.1 in favor of 8.0
Why didn't we get 6.1?
Samsung releases the major builds and frequent updates. We don't need stuff that's more suited for a pixel. If you're that concerned, buy a pixel.

I had the S6 Edge +, that was long ago but I don't recall getting it for that device. Either way, obviously wasn't a big deal update

Do we get 8.1 ?
Samsung only focus on main releases, 7.0 of samsung has all the stuff of the pure 7.1 with it's own UI

What's in the 8.1 that you'll be sorely missing?
If you expect every point update, get a Pixel.

It was a only question because as you mentioned earlier that the latest version we will get. I do not miss anything

Sorry I should have been more clear and misunderstood. By the time that 8.1 was out development on 8 would have already started.
Short answer. Do you seriously expect them to complile thousands of packages all over again for a version that changes basically nothing, only to do it all over again 2 months later for a major release?

Yes, that's their job, they dont get to take a year off after compiling one version of android. If they can release x.1 updates on the note they can do the same on the s8.
