thank you
Follow this tutorial to root and install custom recovery. Then, to install updates, repeat step 9 monthly + install custom recovery each time (twrp).

Hi, I am new to the android scene and have a few questions.
Just wondering about the procedure for updating a rooted device, specifically the nexus 7. After I receive my nexus 7, I am planning on unlocking the bootloader, flashing CWM, and then rooting the device. I am not planning on using any custom roms. I am just going to be using stock JB.
If in the future I want to do an OTA update, what is the procedure for this?
From my understanding, it seems this is the procedure for doing an OTA update for rooted nexus 7:
1. unroot the device? (how do you unroot the device?). is this necessary?
2. use cwm to flash the stock recovery, because you won't be able to get the OTA with a custom recovery such as CWM. Is that correct?(also, where do you get the stock recovery??)
3. apply the OTA update. root will be gone.
4. flash CWM and re-root the device
And once I have succesfully OTA updated the nexus 7, re-flashed CWM, and re-rooted back the device, will I have to start from scratch (lose all data, settings, apps, etc?). I know unlocking the bootloader will wipe the device, but will the OTA update process require me to start over?
If I am missing any steps or have some things mixed up, please let me know. Also, if I were to use an OTA root keeper, what would the procedure be like or how would it change the procedure I listed above?
Thanks.
Haven't got my Nexus 7 yet but it looks pretty simple according to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1764794
Basically just need to have OTA RootKeeper installed beforehand, then disable signature verification in CWM and patch the OTA update. Then OTA Rootkeeper can restore root.
HTH
My N4 was on 4.2.1 and I managed to root it using the video guide here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sV355YEDzc8&list=FLym1yJ2TTTjBZbty0DrqsKQ&index=3). It worked fine and I was using Titanium Backup with root access.
Then my phone notified me of the 4.2.2 update so I installed it OTA. I thought I still had root because SuperSU was still there. However, when I load Titanium Backup it says:
"Sorry, I could not acquire root privileges. This application will *not* work! Please verify that your ROM is rooted, and try again. This attempt was made using the /system/xbin/su" command"
I then installed a Root Checker (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.joeykrim.rootcheck&feature=nav_result) which indicates "This device does not have proper root access".
My questions are
How do I regain root access in a way that doesn't cause a full wipe of my data?
Will I have to do this every time I apply an official Nexus update?
What is the best way to apply an official Nexus update maintaining root without having data wiped?
TIA
I personally use the toolkit and option four. Every time I install an update, I lose root, but the toolkit easily restores it each time.

I too lost my root when i got 4.2.2 OTA. I used WugFresh's toolkit and rerooted with it. I also flashed the CWM custom recovery, which I've read prompts you to keep your root after rebooting with an OTA update.

If you have cwm and you install any update that breaks root it will ask of you want to keep root when you choose to reboot the nexus 4.

This must be about the 100th time someone posts this question.
Some of you clearly are too lazy to search or read

Hello,
I am a noob at all the rooting stuff, my phone is also rooted with kingroot. But I cannot even call it a root. So I want to Root my Nexus 4 Manually and install SuperSu. When we install SuperSu from twrp, and when we open it, do we get promted to update binary? I have seen a lot of videos on YouTube and they say to install the Android SDK, but which one, on the SDK site, there are 2 options, SDK package and SDK standalone Tools, which to download.
I've downloaded the TWRP and SuperSu on my PC, but to do the rooting we need the SDK. On the other side, I have a big fear of brick, cause I am not that rich to afford a new phone, cause Nexus 4 costed me a tidy pocket. So please give me a way to Root my phone manually and safely from Brick.

I suggest reviewing the nexus 4 guides to mods and ROMs: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/general/index-nexus-4-roms-kernels-mods-guides-t3201708
I will not be responsible if you blow up, brick, or anything goes wrong with your device
Here is how to apply OTA's to the Google pixel xl (first gen) with a custom kernel installed
Prerequisites
You need to have your phone rooted with magisk
Flashfire from play store
kernel flashable zip (ElementalX, Franco Kernel, Kirikisura, etc.)
Magisk zip
An OTA from the Google website (search Pixel XL ota) or from your phone
Steps
Have your OTA ready (downloaded or the update screen is showing)
(If OTAs work on your phone, stay on the update screen, do not download or install it)
Import Magisk zip, kernel, and OTA on your phone
Open Flashfire and grant superuser
You have to have your files in the proper steps
Update OTA zip with restore stock boot and recovery checked
Kernel Installer
Magisk zip file
Ever root Disabled
Reboot normal
Click the big red flash button
You are done !!!
Note: If you want TWRP, you have to use a computer to install it
Note #2: Flashfire will detect an OTA on your phone and download it if you have an update screen on your phone. Again do not install the update normally
I give credit to Chainfire and topjohnwu for making these amazing softwares
Any chance to get more detailed steps?

This guide is outdated, use TWRP to update as flashfire does not work properly on 8.1
Hello all awesome members, i have searched google, xda and even bing for answers but none have answerd me yet.
So i have an OP5 wich is running Oxygen os 5.1.2 and now i want to update it to the latest.
Things i have tried:
Download and update through the phone updater: Fail
Recovery manager: Fail
ADB sideload: Fail.
To be clear i don't care if i loose root i just want my phone back to fully stock.
So how do i get there? what am i missing?
Can you tell us more details, what ROOT method you are use? If you are using TWRP + Magisk, it's easy to update. Just download Full Update (not OTA) mostly OnePlus 5 will detected if our device ROOTED then will download Full ROM.
Then Goes to Custom Recover, Clear Cache dan Dalvi, install Full Update ROM and flash Magisk again and done
