Well, hello there,
as you Note 3 owners probably noticed, the Samsung Camera Stock app applies a heavy (!!) blur filter on every picture. Why? Don't know, because it's the Samsung way. My Note 1 made far better and sharper pictures.
But fear not, there is a solution. There is an App called "FV5" in the store which has far less agressive post processing and is much sharper. Here is a comparison.
You should really get rid of the stock-app, I suggest. It's horrible and there is much more in the Note 3 camera when we thought so far. It's pretty ok in combination with the right app.

I have FV5 and Snap camera, but I rarely use my camera unless it's for a drunken pic of something stupid. - Haven't really tested the differences in any of them either. But I will later today
I've had mine little over a week and have to say I have been far from impressed with the pictures it takes.

The hardware itself is pretty good. It just needs the right software to drive it. Without the blur of the stock app you can make nice pictures.

I have noticed that the first image is 9.6 Mp whilst the second is full 13mp
The default setting is 16:9 aspect ratio
Try setting 13mp in standard camera app then repeat your test.
Certainly FV5 has a lot of flexibility if you're familiar with photography settings

I know that was a mistake I made. But fear not, that is not the issue here. In fact it does barely make a difference. It's the Stock-Apps post processing that kills all image quality. FV5 is far superior.

I've also noticed a slight blur with the AOSP Camera app under CM 11. But at least there is no annoying post-processing. I would say the stock camera app does provide the best image quality results, due to the post-processing, since the hardware by itself is nothing incredible (the sensor is rather small compared to the sensors used in the latest Sony and Nokia phones). A bigger sensor not only enables greater detail, but when combined with OIS (like in the aforementioned phones), minimizes blur as well. I tried the FV app, and while it has a lot of added functionality, I did not like the layout in which they were implemented, and the picture quality was similar to the stock Samsung app. If the Lenovo Super Camera app worked on my ROM, that would probably be the best alternative.

Sorry, but the Stock Camera App from Samsung applies HEAVY post processing. It basically blurs the whole image, all sharpness is gone. It's horrible. FV5 does take much better pictures.

Kinda funny, i come from a z1 and i take better pics with my note 3 in low light i just play with ev and iso

You will take even better pictures with FV5. The stock apps noise filter is so heavy that it blurs everything, imo it's impossible to shoot a really sharp picture. It's always kinda blurry.
Take some photos and compare, it's super obvious.
Just got the phone today and I'm really enjoying it. Camera seems to take pretty decent photos, I'm just not liking the UI of the stock app itself. What are you guys using?

Yea, I figured as much. I can almost live without that though. Coming from a Note 4 and i'm used to touch to focus.

The Moto camera app has touch to focus. You just have to turn off the auto focus..
I'm trying to live with the Moto camera app....I also like it for the barcode scanner...... But, I found the HTC One camera app here on XDA. I've used that app for the last 3 years and have always wished it was available for other phones. It's in the Android apps and games section (here's the link to the thread): http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/themes-apps/mod-htc-one-m9-camera-gallery-t3143538 I like the gallery too.
I've also tried MANY other cameras and the one I like the best so far, and it's new, is: ProShot
I also like Camera FV-5..... I just purchased it today. The 3.0 update that's coming out looks pretty good, that's why I got it now. I don't like the 21mp ratio aspect and if you change it, it takes off 5mp, but we'll see what happens?
Also like: A Better Camera - pretty good, but don't like the UI
AZ Camera - Manual Pro Cam - Just tried it this week, seems ok for a freebie
Open Camera - This one really impressed me for a free camera
Snap Camera - Looks like an upgrade to Open Camera, but I have some "touch" issues with it from time to time
Cameringo+ Effects camera - It has great reviews and 4.6 stars, but I just didn't like the UI either.
CameraMX - Pretty good for a freebie too
Google Camera - It's Google Camera Not much more to say
I plan on messing around with Camera FV-5 tonight to get a better feel for it......But I'll probably always use the Moto camera for the ease of access to it.
Thanks for the suggestions. Do any one of the cemera apps you mentioned allow users to manually set e.g. ISO? (I don't own a MXPE yet so I can't test this myself)

Yeah, most of those do.
The Camera FV-5 and Cameringo+ are capable of being almost fully manual. The ProShot has several of those too and the HTC camera even has several manual settings. Not sure about the others, I didn't explore them that much? Pretty sure they'll say in the description? If you get it narrowed down or need more specific info, I can *try* to help by downloading (one I own) and trying something with it? I'm a little restricted on time later this week, headed to St Louis for a business meeting (and Cardinal's game).
Are any of these apps able to shoot 720p in 120 fps? In the other cameras I have tried, I get a pop-up saying fps over thirty isn't supported even on 720p

Thanks! When you get a chance, could you use one of these apps to take a couple of photos in low light setting, and see if manually setting the ISO and/or (probably and?!) extending the exposure time would improve the camera's low light performance (without flash)? You probably need a (very?) steady hand
THANKS!

Well, I had a few minuted today, so here's the setup..... I play in a band (just a weekend thing), so I went into my music room (aka, my bedroom) and turned off the light, but left the door half-way open and the hall light on... I then took some pics of my gear.
I snapped several pictures using 4 different apps.... There was almost no difference with any of the apps vs the Moto camera as far as quality goes. One disappointing thing, when I tried to change the ISO, 3 of the 4 apps crashed and the 4th didn't allow me to click on the different speeds?? It's almost like the ISO is locked to auto? They all offered a "night mode" which made it brighter, but added quite a bit of noise. There was also an exposure compensation that brightened up the image, but basically did the same thing as night mode and added noise.
I didn't post any of the images, since there was no difference and it wasn't the best of settings. I'll try to get some better testing this evening and see if I get anything worth posting?
The stock camera sucks, because it doesn't have different pic sizes. Only 16m for 4:3 or 21m on 16:9. Witch results in huge file sizes. I take a lot of pics for work and 2m is big enough. The lack of options is weird.
I have tried a bunch of camera apps with this phone.
Stock camera .....very poor quality compared to other apps.
These are the best (not in order):
Snap camera ...takes great pictures, probably the best of the three with the right settings ..... but currently buggy though with this phone ...auto-focus is not that sharp in low light, touch to capture works great and takes sharp focused pictures but is buggy (you often have to double tap to capture, but if you can live with that until it's fixed..) and also the video mode doesn't currently work
Camera FV-5 ....very good quality pics, sharp, detailed, on par with snap, no bugs found
Open Camera ....Very good quality pics, auto focus works best of all the apps, or on par with Camera FV-5 ...no bugs found ....video mode works ....and it's free
Does this app like snap camera or open camera drain more battery than stock caméra ?
Took this one last night at the St Louis Cardinals game.. The post game fireworks.. Not too bad for stock, set on automatic.

Stock is ok but wow does the files really have to be so large. Kinda stupid. You don't have enough control to change picture size before taking a pic. Most of the time I am just emailing and texting pics you don't need a 7MB pic for that.
For me Samsung phones has the best hardware out there. But it is still missing something. I have been wondering why their devices have no auto exposure on the focused area just like many android devices have it now. Although I can see their S6 edge plus has it now but im not totally satisfied with it.
So my question is the auto exposure(adjusting the exposure of the photo to the area you what to receive more light to have a picture perfect) is a hardware or software limitation? if it is software probably there are third party apps out there can you guys tell me what it is. I have been using Camera FV5 but it still does not do that.

Are you talking a RAW format output file that you can edit/manipulate through Lightroom/PS or any third party software? If I am correct...good luck with that. Myself is using camera FV5 but figured out that what is the point and use of having a raw file coming out from this phone sensors...almost like useless. I rather side to the JPG output and put everything on auto and let the phone decide. Just imagine, Even until this day where modern dslr's, mirrorless are coming out but still having problem with noise coming out from those cameras (raw files). A micro four-thirds sensor has more noise compare to APS-C's, Apsc raw produce noise more than FULL Frame, Medium Format are less noise compare to Full frame. My point is.... The camera sensor of samsung phones are wayyyyy.... smaller than four-thirds therefore we can't expect that it will produce a better raw files, plus phones fixed lens. If there are raw files coming out from those sensors might not be usable compare to DSLR's. Even in Fuji and Sony mirrorless nowadays, specifically the XT-10 and A6000 if you go down lower to their native ISO probably not a good thing.
In short... Camera phones sensors not designed for RAW files or not yet ready maybe in the future. I am a portrait and landscape photographer (not a PRO) and uses my phone from time to time when my crappy old dslr go nuts Like you, I would love to see this feature fully functional in the future
edit: Camera FV5
You can manipulate the settings of your FV5 app by going to Menu - Shooting Utilities and click the last one, touch to capture. Make sure you switch ON your HISTOGRAM so that you can expose properly on your shot, then change your Light Metering Mode to the second one which Center Weighed (no label), That way you can expose your shot the way you want. You can also customized the exposure time by choosing the S mode and select custom for open shutter time. Kept in mind that What you See is What you Get on this app for it will give you JPG file. For me I really rely more on HISTOGRAM, if the native camera of samsung has the histogram ability then I will probably use it more. Cheers!
You'll probably see this feature in the Galaxy Camera lineup, but I doubt it'll make is way into the regular smartphone lineup.....why would it, they want us to buy their GC range too......

I don't take raw format. I just want a point-shoot-upload phone camera with good balanced light and everything(like what iphone does so as many android devices out there). just to be clear I am not comparing phone camera sensors to dslr sensors because those are very different. im no a pro photographer and I know phone cameras are not designed for that. I just want a better(satisfying) result from what hardware it possessed.

I see. so it is a hardware limitation?
I never said anything about hardware limitations......
All I said was, that for Samsung, it wouldn't make financial sense to include every camera function on a smartphone, when they have other, more fully featured devices that they are selling too.....

so if it is not hardware limitation there should be an app out there. I can other OEMs that uses either Samsung or Sony sensors for there camera and theirs work like a charm. but how come Samsung does not have it. atleast some devs are making that app.
I am no dev nor a programmer but I think it would not be that hard to develop a camera that works like other OEM devices.
Yeah....your best bet is a 3rd party independent app, because I can't see Samsung implementing these features on a standard smartphone. It wouldn't make business sense for them to do so.....not if they want to continue selling their Galaxy Camera range.......

yeah. tried every other third party apps out there can't find one that suits to my preferences. tried using custom roms, ported other rom but no luck for me yet.
they should be implementing that one especially on their flag carrier series. because every other android devices shifted to that camera functionality. they already implemented it in their s6 edge+ was hoping that upon mashmallow update they can implement it in s5.
BTW can you help me find that app? where I can just tap to anywhere and the exposure compensation for the whole image is adjusted to where I touched it.
Don't have any idea of actual, specific apps......If I want ultimate control over my image capturing, then I'll use one of my DSLR's......
But here's a good place to start looking....

I usually just use HDR on the Samsung camera which gives good exposure across the image. If you don't want to use that, in the settings is an option "metering modes" which let's you pick how the exposure is selected. I haven't checked to see if spot metering is based off the centre or the focus point, though.

I know smartphone cameras are not as good as DSLRs. just want a little bit more control in my device's camera. it is just so sad that we have a lot of best developers here in xda. but they are more focused on custom roms, exploits(root), ports and mods. I guess devs are not that much interested in other stuffs.

HDR is only good for outdoors and well lit surroundings. and metering modes does not give me the satisfaction. probably need to buy mid range smartphones with good cameras and fingerprint scanner.
Hi,
I'm the developer of Open Camera ( http://opencamera.org.uk/ / https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-camera-t2850557/ ) and was wondering what people's experiences were on the OnePlus 3T with third party camera apps that use Camera2 API?
I've tested a few different third party cameras on my OnePlus 3T, with Camera2 enabled as follows:
Open Camera: enable Settings/"Use Camera2 API".
A Better Camera: enable Settings/General settings/More/"Use Camera2 interface".
Snap Camera HDR (Trial): enable Settings/Other/"Use Camera2 API".
Camera FV-5: this uses Camera2 by default.
AZ Camera: this uses Camera2 by default.
Footej: this uses Camera2 by default.
Lightroom (which has a built-in camera using Camera2)
Mostly things seem good, but there are some issues on my device (these occurred on both Oxygen 4.0.2 and 4.0.3):
* Most seriously, I've seen problems to do with using manual shutter speed. This usually shows in the form of preview corruption (it shows a split-screen, or starts scrolling), but sometimes there's a camera error, in some cases the entire phone freezes for several seconds (with even the home button not responding). In rare cases the phone becomes sluggish until a reboot is forced. It seems to happen with bright scenes (e.g., outdoors in daytime, or pointing close to a bright light - say shutter speed 1/100s or less). There are a few ways to reproduce this:
1. Switch to manual shutter speed, then back to auto. Then point to a bright scene, after a few moments the problem usually happens.
2. Point at bright scene and switch to manual shutter speed, and wait a few moments.
3. Switch to manual shutter speed, and keep varying the shutter speed (even if not pointing to bright scene).
I've reproduced this with: Open Camera, A Better Camera, Snap Camera HDR, Camera FV-5, AZ Camera, Footej, Lightroom.
Unfortunately this doesn't just make manual mode unreliable, but also affects implementation of things like HDR, expo bracketing.
* The ISO value (and possibly shutter speed?) reported by the Camera driver is incorrect in dark scenes. This can be seen by the on-screen values in Open Camera, A Better Camera (see Settings/Viewfinder settings/More/ISO value), Snap Camera HDR, Camera FV-5, AZ Camera, Footej. In Open Camera, this value is CaptureResult.SENSOR_SENSITIVITY obtained from the CaptureRequest request received by onCaptureCompleted.
It can also be seen by looking at the reported ISO in the image's Exif data.
The maximum reported values are ISO 799 and shutter speed 1/16.7s. Why do I suspect this to be incorrect? Firstly because taking a photo of the same scene with the stock camera will show much higher ISO in the Exif (even though the photo looks similar), secondly because switching to manual ISO value of ~800 (either in the stock or a third party camera) results in a much darker photos.
Note, this bug is more serious than it might sound, as it messes up things like using HDR for darker scenes.
* Possibly related to this is that setting a manual ISO of above 800 seems to have no effect - photos are still taken as if they had ISO 800. This can be reproduced with Open Camera, A Better Camera, Snap Camera HDR.
Also, not a camera2 issue, but still relevant to the OnePlus 3T, is double-power-button to open camera: if the device is unlocked, it launches the default camera app, but if the device is locked, it only seems to open the stock OnePlus camera app. Open Camera sets an intent filter for both android.media.action.STILL_IMAGE_CAMERA and android.media.action.STILL_IMAGE_CAMERA_SECURE . This works okay on my Nexus 6. On my OnePlus, the app info for the stock camera app says "no defaults set", so there's nothing to clear.
Supposedly the preferred way to report bugs is https://forums.oneplus.net/feedback/ , but I can't create a new thread until I've posted 5 replies (ah yes, anti-spam measures that encourage users to spam) so I'll have to post here for now. I thought it'd be interesting to know if others have experienced or can reproduce these - or if you're experiencing different issues altogether? (Sometimes even on a single model, there can be frustrating camera bugs that only show on some devices for whatever reason.)
I like to play with manual mode, but just a casual shooter so haven't gone to details, but will give this try. I know there are some inaccuracy, but it's affirming coming from a pro. You can just comment 5 times and post in the oneplus forum. I will also test and post the feedback.
May be fixing these will result in impressive picture quality as hardware is capable just the processing which is average.
Thanks for the finding and posting, at least we know some of the reason now.
I've had problems with the manual shutter speed. Happens when reducing it. Picture starts scrolling then phone freezes up

(Sometimes even on a single model, there can be frustrating camera bugs that only show on some devices for whatever reason.)

hey man first of all thank you very much for developing that app, its awwwwsssome and btw oneplus implemented camera2api in op3t poorly so that could be the reason ( if they were able to implement api2 correctly then there wouldve been 240 fps slow mo for op3t)
I was able to reproduce every issue you've said on my 3T - OOS 4.0.3 - mainly incorrect EXIF data when using camera app <> stock.
Open Camera works okay for me (as it crashes the least), but when trying CFV-5 or Manual Camera then I was also able to reproduce the freezing/hanging/glitched preview screen.
Also a thing I noticed, that my rear camera takes brighter pictures in low light than the back, even tough the shutter is longer on the rear (probably incorrectly reported) - more info here.
I was able to reproduce all of the issues you mentioned on an OOS 4.0.3 based custom ROM, which I guess is kinda the same as stock.
This is a serious issue, you should definitely report this to Oneplus, since all of us seem to be affected by it.
Another thing: Higher ISO and lower shutter speed combo works as intended in the stock camera app. I suspect foul play by Oneplus.
I've experienced the lock screen issue before but not used the camera enough to really notice the other problems yet. I actually have Open Camera installed. Nice work and I love the fact that you open sourced it and didn't plague us with more ads. That is very appreciated!
I really miss the camera app I used on the OnePlus One but its just not compatible (or that's the rumor) with newer models. Maybe Ill flash it.
Definately keep trying on the feedback link. I know the spam-to-post thing is stupid. Have you tried the User Feedback app? Or is that only on the Beta?

For what it's worth after I received my 3t I saw how slow the stock camera was and it's inability to stop motion very well and installed your app and it works quite well. I use your app as my default camera app.

Seriously? You defenetly confused with camera apps.
Stock oos camera is wonderful. For exemple, now I'm using as my daily rom, dedicated and unnoficial laos by nvertigo67 for 3t. And I can say, that it is the best rom by far.
Just a moment ago, I'm installed and tested opencamera, and can say anything good (if comparing it with stock one). So please, just try something else and you will see how is amazing, fast, smooth the stock one. Btw, there you can find snapdragon camera(introduce by @nvertigo67 too), that have same perfomance and quality. I'm just prefer oos cam, becouse ui more comfortable.
@mdwh
Nothing personal. You making a good app (use it on my opo). Just whanted to say, that stock one is superb, with op bloobs. Even in laos build.
Getting green squares instead of front camera photos
Thanks for your responses, I've now posted on the OnePlus forums at https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/camera2-api-bugs-for-3rd-party-camera-apps.506100/ .

They responded quickly. Surprisingly quickly. I'm interested to see how fast they will react though...

And I really want to have back the functions from Open Camera. It's the main camera since years now and I don't wanna miss it. Never.
Well, there's hope.
What should I say... I really tried my best to get their attention, but the administrative audience keeps being quiet. I really thought of getting an OP5, but at all points in summary, they really grew trust issues. Wasn't one point of their slogan, they hear what the users want? I really don't think so. Otherwise, this issue would have been fixed ages ago or at least a reply from someone who really works on fixing issues like that. That's a major bug and nobody cares. Sad.
I'm really fed up with this situation. I like to try lots of custom ROMs but I'm basically stuck with using stock OOS just for the camera. What can we do to make this happen? Phone calls? Lots of emails? I'm willing to make a lot of fuss to pressure these mofos into fixing this POS API thing.
@redsmith: Abandon OnePlus once and forever. I'm already looking for a new OEM. Currently, there are no developer-friendly phones out, so I have to wait a bit. I won't support this company any longer that claims "We hear what customers say!". They don't. They only look forward to get their newest devices sold by hype. They're not as tiny as they make us believe. They're close to OPPO (even in the same building). They could fix this problem if they want but sadly it seems, that they simply don't.

No. Phoenix AEX has the OOS camera (not the port). It's exact. I've even used the new Camera2 for the OP5 on Phoenix. Try it. However, I'm using Sultan's SnapDragon Camera (works on LOS based ROMs and Phoenix since Phoenix auto-switches camera HALs), and it really beats any camera app I've tried in quality ... there are setting to tweak ... quality set to high, raised contrast a step or two up, sharpness a step up, saturation a step down, but ... its my new default.

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Moto Z2 Force come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
So far I'm pretty pissed off with the camera. I recently tested the LG G6, Huawei Mate 9, OnePlus 5, and now the Moto Z2 Force which I was hoping would be my dream phone. I owned the Z Force and so far and a bit disappointed. The Camera seems to have potential but the software is terrible, at least on my specific device. The camera is plagued with shutter lag which really seems to take a toll on picture quality. Pro mode is what really upset me with only having the option of 1/4 for shutter speed as the longest time for exposure. I have taken a great deal of pictures to compare with the phones listed above, so far the Huawei Mate 9 has had the best camera in my opinion. Obviously, this is totally objective as views will change per individual. I am by no means a photography expert, but I am always in search of a great camera in a smartphone. The biggest reason for my angry toward the quality of the Z2F camera is the retail cost of the phone, I really thought this would be a camera I would have loved. It seems like I may wait to see how the Essentials Phone turns out and am very curious about the Nokia 8, both in terms of camera. To date I think the use of a dual camera, one being monochrome and the other RGB, is the best implementation. Please let me know if the inconsistent shutter I'm facing is just a problem with my unit or if other's share it as well. I really had my heart/mind set on this phone being able to go toe to toe with others in its price range. Side note, the LG G6 wide angle lens was great for taking pictures, I was surprised that I liked the secondary camera being a wide angle lens as it allowed for unique perspective. I let go of the LG G6 because my father broke his phone and really thought the Z2F would be the phone of my dreams.
Update: Twist for camera sometimes hangs and after some time force closes. This has also happened on 2 occasions when opening camera app, viewfinder is black followed by hang and crash.

Camera shutter speed seems to be a stock app issue mostly. I have CameraZoom FX and that works better at taking the picture quickly. I do expect this to improve as the device matures and some updates get pushed out to it.
That being said, the overall photo quality seems to be pretty good overall. The S8 I am leaving does a better job of handling multiple light levels (like say bright window light in an otherwise dimly lit room), but I do think the Z2F has some promise for sure.
I do agree that I think the shutter lag is very 2015.....so hoping Moto does fix that
disappointing camera

I agree with this. The camera app is terrible. I came from the HTC 10 into this phone and the HTC blows it out of the water as far as camera quality goes, and I doubt there's any reason for that as far as the sensor/hardware goes There are also other apps that don't seem to access the front flash on this phone, I.E. Instagram, snapchat, etc. could be a driver issue or something, but motorola needs to get it together with the Android O update.
Has any compared picture quality with Open Camera and the google camera app?
Camera App Update
I just noticed that they added two features to the camera app. Object recognition and landmark recognition. They said that they included some bug fixes but did not elaborate. Hopefully they will continue to work on the app and image quality will improve as the phone matures. I think there is potential to improve low light photo's seeing that the black and white sensor should aid low light photography.
So far I am very happy with my photo's. I am a casual user and happy with the images. Realistically I do not think one can expect DSLR quality on a mobile phone. Maybe one day....
I've used several third party apps, and this camera is total trash compared to even my nearly three year old Galaxy S6.. I have to place dramatic Instagram-style filters on everything to hide how crappy this camera is.
I took this picture with full manual mode and it's quite good for me

It's only useful for its optical zoom.
Does anyone have problem with autofocus....? The autofocus on this device is absolutely terrible.
Google Camera port is your friend when it comes to the Z2 Force. Also, Snapseed is a great editor.

So, I'm reading through this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/z2-force/themes/app-modded-gcam-hdr-t3735494 ; there seems to be no gcam available for Z2, which would be fully functional. Are you saying you solved this issue and have one that works? Perhaps you can post to the thread with your findings if you did?
