although I always used to think the NFC icon which showed on previous devices on the status bar was big and ugly, I had almost no use whatsoever for the NFC function here in the UK so I didn't switch it on and hardly ever got to see it.
Now that finally Google has managed to bring some banks on board with NFC based Android Pay and you can actually use your device to buy real stuff in the real world, NFC is just starting to look like a highly desirable function.
I work in banking. Banks are really stressed out about risk. Getting banks to agree to use your payment service is a battle. They have to make changes to their banking systems, policies, customer agreements, website text - yeah even that can be a battle. My own bank took about a year to get the main customer telephone number corrected when they changed it. Then they have to train staff and add additional security procedures, problem resolution procedures and systems and ultimately monitoring. It takes time and costs money. Banks like money, as long as they don't have to spend it themselves. Banks will use any excuse they can to avoid spending money and implementing something they don't have to and don't want to.
Having a facility running on your device which could be remotely triggered, potentially debiting up to £30 (or, admittedly with extra verification, £100) a shot is handy - but banks might look askance at you if you tell them that you don't know if it's switched on or not.
Finally!! That horrible NFC icon that's been bugging android device users by sitting there looking ugly on their status bars has a use!! ....except.... many android device owners are now reporting that it has gone... vanished!
You switch on NFC in settings and nope! no NFC icon on the status bar.
I've been having a discussion with Samsung support about this via twitter who insist that it should be there (I agree with them ) but on my Sim-Free Galaxy S7 edge, it isn't.
They're urging me to go through all the fun of a factory reset (take two aspirin and go away!). I'm not all that keen on the idea, you understand.
I'd appreciate if any Samsung Galaxy S7 edge, or heck, any Galaxy S7 users too would be kind enough to advise if they get to see the NFC icon or perhaps kind enough to confirm that they do not see it on their status bar when they switch on NFC.
If any of you guys do see the icon, which mobile network supplied your handset or is it sim free? The android version / compilation information from Settings, About Phone would be extra heplful.
Sure, I know how to check NFC status the longhand way, but Android Pay is intended to be a payment system that even muppets that can't remember PIN numbers can cope with (hey, even I forget PIN numbers too sometimes so I'm not being mean here just because I work for a bank).
Google is getting a lot of resistance from UK banks who would much rather merely support an elite subset of Apple users who can afford the latest devices using Apple Pay. Doubts about ability even to determine whether such a facility is actually active or not are not going to make adoption requests any more persuasive…. and then Samsung themselves are hoping to persuade UK banks to adopt Samsung Pay which sometimes uses NFC, especially in the UK, and I know for a fact the banks are havering towards rejecting Samsung Pay.
SO guys, do you see the NFC icon on your status bar when the function is switched on ?
Sorry for the long post - I did try to make this entertaining
p.s. I've heard that some Droid Turbo and Xperia Z owners have been complaining about this too, so it's not necessarily Samsung specific -there will probably be quite a few devices experiencing this issue.
ok, I must've waffled too much....
It's become important to know that you've got NFC switched on now Android Pay is a thing.
Does anyone with any form of Galaxy S7 / S7 edge see the squiggly N icon which indicates that NFC is enabled if they switch on the NFC ??
It never used to matter before, but now that people are hoping to see Android Pay and Samsung Pay brought in by the banks, inability to tell if the remotely controlled, contactless payment system is even switched on or not will be held up by the banks as another excuse to say they're not adopting it.... too risky, too buggy.
Samsung say the icon is being displayed. I don't believe them.
Please guys, share.... Do YOU see it or not ? Snapdragon or Exynos ?
When I switch my NFC on, there is no icon in the statusbar
Unfortunately I have the icon. Lol wish I didn't.

Hi all!
I wanted to enjoy everything that my HD2 has to offer so today I made the switch to a provider, which offers me 1GB free traffic/month.
Great and all.. but, since I made that switch, a "1" is appearing on top, next to the connection status icons (on windows mobile).
I'm pretty sure it has something to do with my connection, because as soon as I toggle off "phone" at the wireless controls, it's gone.
Can anyone explain me what it actually means? And maybe, how I can get rid of it?
Thanks in advance
Pyr0wl
I think when the "1" is present, that means that your Line 1 is active. Same goes for other active Lines.
Atleast, with iWireless, that's the situation.
[iWireless also allows a Data Connection whilst on the phone too, so I'm assuming AT&T phones also have the "1".]
Okay, with the info you provided, i went off to scour the internet, and I found some information.
It seems indeed, that the number on top, indicates which line I'm using And, if i press the "#" on my keypad, I can switch from line 1 to line 2. This is called, alternative line service. All it does, is mapping two different phone numbers to your SIM card.
Now i'm just looking for a way to disable this, because, i don't have a second telephone number mapped to my SIM
So I was HALF way right. Pretty good guess.
I'll do some research and see if it's possible to disable the "Secondary" Line, though, I think it may be a SIM Function, not device... as you did say in your first post that you switched carriers... which means a new SIM.
As most people know, tampering with the SIM Card (Excluding your Contacts & Web Settings) can be a bad idea...

right on bro thanks for all you have and are doing
Did some research, and found out that it CAN be disabled but you have to speak to your provider about it.
The actual Service Name is called 2-in-1 Sim Service. See HERE for more info. Though that article is quite old, it seems many providers now support 2-in-1 Sim Service for Business customers that wish to have a Business Number AND a Personal Number all on one device.
I called my provider and asked about this service, and they said it is, in fact an optional service, but it's pre-configured on the SIM Card. At the moment, my provider only has one style of SIM.. so I can't remove my Secondary Line availability.
I recommend talking to your provider about the service to see if you can disable it.
Hope this helps m8.

Hi there
so I should not have asked this as a Q/A thread. I was hoping with the update they may have fixed the issue but no such joy. Hopefully someone has a work around or a fix:
I have been looking for a replacement for my Moto X Pure (because I am idiot and lost it). I liked the specs and the price of the Axon7 (having an support for an external SSD won me over vrs One Plus). Anyways I should have checked here first as there is a serious limitation for my use case. I use my phone for my work. Due to the way the work policies were setup we have to enable the password for Android start up. And as some of us have found out the hard ware that option is NOT supported with the current OS on the phone. From what I have read the phone is pre-encrypted so this option was removed.
My question (I know finally) was is there any way to get the start Android password working? I heard something about the un-locked boot loader but not sure if that is the ticket. I am not sure why the folks at ZTE removed that feature/option. Without getting this option re-enabled I have no choice but to send this phone back (take advantage of the 30 day money back guarantee) and look for something else... other than that I really like this phone! As always thank you XDA members!
Here is what I am seeing:

But when you try to touch to change the setting, it takes you to the area where you set/reset your screen lock password. And you get stuck in that loop.

From all I have seen, the startup password protection is not present on the ZTE rom. You can hit up the official forum mods for an answer, give them the app that is causing this so it can be verified. There are instances where people were prompted for password on startup after installing and wiping in TWRP. This is most likely the Android Device Manager suspicious behavior protection based on wording of the prompt
http://en.miui.com/thread-324522-1-1.html But i don't think this can be made a permanent prompt

thanks for the info. I ended up calling ZTE tech support on this issue. And after some digging they came back to me with "this is a know issue and we are working on it with no ETA yet" reply. So hopefully that will get some traction. The personal question is do I want to wait for them to fix it? Or should I return and get something else to support the cooperate work needs. But that is more of a personal question I have to answer... Thank you again!
Same problem here - I would buy this device but work requires the PIN (and no root) so currently not able to purchase. This and the lack of T-Mobile Wifi calling in current builds are the big blockers for me. I don't have trust to purchase until both are addressed. Hopefully that is soon as the new Google "Pixel" phones next week (despite the higher likely cost) are the alternative option to me right now.
This is far fetched, but some removed settings like screen on time are accessible through custom launcher activities like SOT. Maybe worth a shot?

Use ampere for play store for app usage.
Can anyone with a device confirm if that app provides access to the settings and this works?

First thing I noticed on my T-Mobile Stock Note 4 Running 6.0.1 was that the "Flashlight" and "MobileHotspot" Quick Settings Tiles were removed. Now I've already gone through other threads and found an app that allowed me to restore them.
Their respective names are TorchLight and WiFiHotspot.
Now I'm not sure what to exactly call these besides sysui_qs_tiles, but I've found several other tiles that work on my Note 4. Namely SmartScroll, AirView, and AirGesture.
Is there a list out there that has all possible Quick Setting Tiles for android 6.0? I was surprised to find that Smart Scroll was still available in android 6.0 on the Note 4, it does not even show up within my settings and yet this Quick Setting Tile lets me activate it. I'm curious as to what other tiles are hidden but compatible with the Note 4.
Here is my current Quick Setting Item's:
Code:
Wifi;MobileData;SilentMode;AutoRotate;TorchLight;Bluetooth;Location;PowerSaving;PersonalMode;WiFiHotspot;WifiCalling;NetworkBooster;UltraPowerSaving;MultiWindow;AirplaneMode;AllShareCast;Nfc;SideKey;Sync;SmartStay;DormantMode;CarMode;TouchSensitivity;AirView;AirGesture;SmartScroll;

Great post
It is a lot harder than I thought it would be to get a list like this. I asked 2 people to click the google play link, install Settings Database editor in an instant, click open, select secure table menu top right and scroll to sysui and copy the long list of words. Ended up spending more time than it would take trying to get something so easy... and with no way of having them screw anything up.... ADB will never exist in their reality. I should know bettter. Anyway I am in the middle of discussions between samsung and VMC as to why I receive a notification that my phone supports wifi calling, how I signed up for it via a shortcut app and am fully registered, how is it possible to simply choose to not allow thousands of your customers this feature simply because we won't waste money on a new phone? Nothing to do with monthlly package.... yeah this is happening to a lot of people....
so here are mine. The last 2 I tried to add hoping to make a toggle. no go. I am scheduled for a call tomorrow from a non virgin employee. Probably they can enable it as an individual entry and the call center doesn't have the feature to enable the feature no A5 user is worthy of. Not until thousands more start calling.
Is it possible that Samsung is fed up with carriers dictating how their device operates, spread millions of A5's and lit a fire? I mean, technically every single A5 owner in Canada gets a big pop up saying they have this feature and the carrier must either allow it, or admit they cripple your device as punishment for not getting one you don't even need. I put my tiles in and the screenshot that could change a lot very soon as more people figure out what's going on here. It is one thing for a device to become obsolete, but when it is flat out stolen, Samsung sure did let us know who it was without saying it at all. They all suck anyway.
xda has already saved 2 of my friends hundreds of dollars and myself.... same with current phone usage. No carrier or manufacturer can do that. It's like hating your wife.
My tiles: (pics in panel and other 2 from wifi a5 fiasco)
Wifi,MobileData,Location,Flashlight,Bluetooth,RotationLock,SoundMode,custom(com.samsung.android.smartmirroring/.tile.SmartMirroringTile),custom(com.android.settings/com.samsung.android.settings.qstile.SecAccountTiles),custom(com.samsung.android.app.aodservice/.settings.AODTileService),custom(com.google.android.gms/.nearby.discovery.ui.DiscoveryTileService),custom(com.pranavpandey.rotation/.service.RotationTileService),custom(com.android.nfc/com.samsung.android.nfc.quicktile.NfcTile),custom(projekt.substratum/.services.tiles.SubstratumTile),custom(com.samsung.android.oneconnect/.external.DeviceVisibilityTile),custom(com.android.settings/com.samsung.android.settings.qstile.PowerSavingTile),BlueLightFilter,AirplaneMode,Hotspot,Dnd,WorkMode,WifiHotspot,WifiCalling,NetworkBooster
Interesting but using that app it seems the toggles which are added arent permanent. As soon as you untoggle them the whole quick panel collapses, and if you open up the stock editor they are deleted.
Running XXXNoLimits, OOS 10.3, Elemental X kernal
Did not update anything this week. Now, under settings-google there is "covid-19 notifications". Had to have been either carrier pushed or a google back door. I don't even have a google account on my phone!
Shows "on/1app" but when I push it the screen just goes dark until I hit back.
Titanium and App ops can't find it.
I keep bluetooth off and only turn location on when I need Magic Earth Maps, then turn it back off, however, the pisses me the f**k off that it has been loaded on my phone.
I have a Samsug Tab running Lineage and it is not there, but the tab is wifi only. Tried Lineage 3 times on my phone and can not get Signal messenger to work and that is a deal breaker for me.
Anyway, how do we get rid it this??
Is this the screen you are referring to, but with different info populating it?

I don't have any Covid apps installed so for me there are no settings to turn on or off; this form of contact tracing is not yet available where I live.
The big question is what app on your phone is being detected as a contact tracing app.
Sent from my ONEPLUS A6013 using Tapatalk
How do the notifications look like? Regular notifications? Perhaps take a screenshot when you see another one. You should be able to trace which app (or system element) is spewing out these nuisances by long pressing the notification and take more actions by tapping the gear icon top right...
@franken..... I actually don't get to that screen, but that is the right place. Checked a another Android and that is the screen it goes to, mine just goes black.
@timmmmm...haven't gotten any notifications as I don't have any covd apps.
Settings does, however show "on/1 app". I am guessing a glitch since I have leashed google w xxx, Titanium, and App Opps.
I have not done the last system update. Don't have a google account, but do have a google Fi sim card since I live overseas and it works here.
I read google pushed this out as a new setting, for those that download covid apps, blah, blah, blah.......but HOW?
And how do we get rid of it. Article I read on a UK new site said "usage and diagnostics" is where you can turn it off and on, my phone was and is set to off, but I still wanna get rid of it.
That's part of a Google Play Services update, you can't remove it.
If you don't opt-in explicitly, it should not have any effect.
Do you really want to trust that? I personally wouldnt trust anything said or done at this point. For sometime my phone's been acting weird. Note 9 completely stock. But my g7 power rooted since day one with a global variant still runs like a charm. I'd rather just remove it or better yet permanently disabled it through some exploit.

What exactly do you think the phone is doing with that Covid-19 notification setting without an app to drive it? Contact tracer apps need to plug into the local health authority, and only a few places in the US are doing it because people are so suspicious of big tech. I would gladly participate but it's not available in my area.

The only way to get rid of it is to delete Google Play Services. That's how they snuck it in. On Android Pie it's simple. Just debloat via ADB using pm list packages prompt and voila! it's gone. On Android 10 it works the same EXCEPT none of the google apps, firefox, instacart, or anything like that will WORK. So you can de-google all you want - they've baked it into everything. It's something I'm struggling with now since I was forced to upgrade.
It's been almost a month we have received the stable Android 13 update on the Nothing Phone 1 and since then we haven't heard anything new or exciting about the product from the Nothing team. Matter of fact, Phone 1 still running on the two months old January 2023 Security Patch. So the question is, is that's all for the Phone 1 ?
I don't think Android 13 was the last Trump Card from the Nothing team.
What's your take. I'd love to know the opinion of the enthusiastic

I got Android 13 in Eu/Poland a little over 2 weeks ago during the official rollout. So not a month in my case
As for features - I would like to get tap and peek to view AoD feature (kind of similar to what motorola is doing). AoD constantly running and lighting up the screen is a kind of waste of battery IMO.
More frequent security and optimisation and feature update would be nice....maybe some more updates to camera? Updating the Nothing weather app to give weather without using location and GPS would be a good idea for me.

Let's see what Nothing updates
I would like to see WiFi 6E at some stage
WiFi 6E is not possible due to modem radio chip . Double tap for ON/OFF the screen is implemented in 3rd launcher apk .
Phone personalization is minimal by default so I don't see in the future other huge changes . In fact this thred posted here is awkard . For sure there are lot of optimisations to do but all are redundant for this particular phone . NOS is minimal , the look is unique and these are the facts made the Nothing Phone so attractive . NO isn't a camera phone or a gaming one , it is simply a phone and that is maybe a good thing for mantainance , updates and so on .
"What's next ? " maybe is the big question for NO 2 .
I'll like an extreme battery saving like Samsung or Xiaomi, sometime I forget to charge my phone and until I find a charger it takes time.

You're right !
Snapdragon 778G Plus has Qualcomm® FastConnect™ 6700 System which enables Wi-Fi 6 , 6E connectivity and Bluetooth 5.2
" The FastConnect 6700 is an advanced 14nm 2x2 Mobile Connectivity system that is designed to accelerate premium Wi-Fi connectivity for mainstream smartphone and computing devices. By extending the power of Wi-Fi 6 into the 6 GHz band (Wi-Fi 6E), the FastConnect 6700 supports Wi-Fi speeds approaching 3 Gbps, ultra-low latency and multi-user feature innovation delivered to new and clean 6 GHz spectrum. So my mistake ...
All good, i like it when a man can admit to a mistake!
