So, recently I received the Marshmallow Update for the Note 4, and I have been procrastinating to update it to 6.0, and I know I am being skeptical, but if there was a chance my battery life would get worst, is it safe to downgrade with firmwares from sam-mobile? Would it trip the KNOX counter? How do I get the original firmware off my phone without rooting it? I know it's a choice to update or not, but the 6.0 Notification is annoying and tempting.
BUMP
Sometimes you have e to jump first.
First things first:
1) Like kitkat, marshmallow has the best battery backup. You won't have any problems with the battery if you do a clean install through odin. (What I mean by clean install: first wipe data/factory reset through recovery before flashing through odin).
2) Upgrading-downgrading doesn't trip the knox counter if you flash only samsung official firmwares. Rooting or flashing some other software does trip the knox.
3) The ability to downgrade from marshmallow depends on which phone your having. For example mine is the SM-N910G snapdragon variant. Here in India when they initially released marshmallow, it didn't come with a locked bootloader. Hence we could downgrade easily. But the new marshmallow updates that came later had locked bootloaders.
yes, i've done that.. no problem at all

hi guys!
i am having samsung s5 g900h, i updated it to lollipop few months back n now i want to downgrade it to kitkat(too much battery drain issue), so i want to know is it safe to downgrade? any problems after downgrading? and what about knox it is 0x0 now will it get affected?
please give me procedure for downgrading and method to root it on kitkat (towelroot will work on kk?)
you should be fine, I updated to lollipop then downgraded back to kitkat easily, you just need to find the file you need for your model and odin that and it should work, for the knox, im not sure about it, but there might be a chance it will be reverted back to 0x0, but you will need to wipe your data in the recovery, or it might not boot at all, and for downgrade/root i use skipsoft android toolbox, it has all the items you would need to downgrade or install root if you want.
Hey Everyone!!
Thank you for looking at this thread.
In a nutshell, I got my i9505 galaxy s4 since June 2013, rooted it straight away when i got it, its got twrp recovery, and im on omega v9 4.2.2. Havent touched it since to date
It does not have knox.
Is there a way I can simply upgrade to something like cm 12.1 with 5.1.1 with everything working, by simply flashing latest cm with gapps using twrp, or will I have to upgrade bootloader, radio, get knox, or even just start over, flash stock samsung lollipop firmware with knox using odin, in order to do so?
I already a while back tried updating twrp to latest, and tried flashing cm with lollipop 5.0 when it first first came out, but only 2g was working, and signal would cut if i lock my phone. Im guessing this is due to bootloader/radio incompatibility, or maybe because it was early builds? Apparently i cant flash lollipop bootloader and radio over old 4.2.2 stuff without consequently installing knox? Is knox that bad? I heard its better to not have knox but if its the only thing stopping from lollipop then so be it.
Any help and advice much appreciated.
Hope to hear soon,
DJ
You can try upgrading just the modem to be able to flash an Android 5.x ROM, but it likely will not work and thus you will have to flash an updated bootloader as well. The good news is that since your S4 is out of warranty, whether you trip the Knox flag or not will not matter.
You should be able to flash the updated bootloader and radio without having to install an entire ROM, though you might want to download the latest ROM for your S4 anyway. There is a thread in I9505 General that has a list of bootloaders and modems that can be downloaded and flashed through Odin. From there, you should have no problem flashing the custom ROM of your choice through recovery.
Quick background. So my note 4 is currently on 5.0.1 boe1, stock rooted knox flag tripped so I cant update via OTA to 5.1.1 which is fine, I'm already readying myself for a manual Odin update
Question is that if there is a 5.1.1 firmware avail on my country for my provider, if I flash the stock 5.1.1 firmware does it also flash the 5.1.1 bootloader or will it retain my 5.0.1 bootloader? I'm pretty sure it will also update the bootloader but wanted to ask anyway to confirm.
Main reason for asking is that I know you lose root when you flash stock firmware via Odin. I'd still want to attain root after upgrading to 5.1.1. Not sure if there are any methods to date to root on 5.1.1 bootloader, or if its safe to flash the 5.0.1 bootloader after the 5.1.1 stock firmware flash.
TIA for those who would answer. [emoji1]

Simple bro. Don't forget to backup your data!!!
Poland 5.1.1 comes with 4 files including bootloader, modem, csc and system. Country or provider means nothing for it, it will work anyway. So, here are the things you gonna do:
1-) Flash Poland 5.1.1 with odin (be careful to place all files in correct section in odin!!!)
2-) Enable usb debugging from developer options
3-) Flash twrp with odin
4-) Lastly, flash which 5.1.1 rom you like, all of them are rooted now :good:
Bumping up since 5.1.1 is already avail on my country. Wanted to know if flashing the 5.1.1 firmware would wipe the device or will it be just an upgrade.?Haven't tried flashing an official firmware on top of an official stock (lower version).

It won't wipe your phone data, it will be like an upgrade.
Secondly tripping knox does not mean you will not receive OTA. As long as you are fully stock and when you check the system status in settings and it states 'official' you will receive the OTAs

Thanks! Yep, realize that now. I believe the reason I can't receive OTA is due to the custom recovery I've installed. Will try reverting to stock recovery first to see if I can OTA upgrade. If not, will download the full firmware and flash on ODIN.

The ROM might still consider your device to modified, You may have to flash stock from Odin and then check the status, if it still says modified then a factory reset might be required.
Hi,
I have experience with the Canadian S4 I337M, currently running custom Validus ROM 5.1.1, originally was on TouchWiz 4.4.2;
I have altough a question that seems quite.. debated, did looked around I can't find a definitive answer and know who I should trust. I wonder if options changed in 2015 rather than 2013 when KNOX was still new.
Out of simple curiosity (I will not attempt it, risky, probably useless and I'm running 5.1.1 anyway): I keep reading that it's impossible to downgrade the S4 to 4.2.2, due to the KNOX bootloader on 4.3 / 4.4, I understand that you cannot downgrade below 4.3 which is the "new" KNOX bootloader.
1. I'm simply curious: On the I337M, what happens if you grab the stock 4.2.2 firmware and flash it with Odin anyway, considering I'm on 4.4 ? My guess, if I'm correct, Odin detect the bootloader version right away and says "FAIL". Correct?
2. I used to think it was possible to downgrade from 4.4 to 4.3, since 4.3 has the KNOX bootloader as well. Is this possible anyway, or will Odin fail (Not going to try it, not worth it)? Considering what I've read just today, 4.4 is also a new bootloader. In any case, since that 4.4 bootloader cannot be downgraded (I guess?), there is no way to downgrade from 4.4 to stock 4.3 either? Odin will show "FAIL" ?
3. Is there any other way to downgrade it anyway? I understand that KNOX 0x1 remain irreversible yet, and to my knowledge, it's impossible to dowgrade to 4.2.2 (Or even 4.3?), but I've been reading that it was possible to downgrade if the bootloader is excluded from the TAR archive, make sense to me, but is that true, was that patched? Should I recompile an ODIN package excluding the bootloader, is that how it's done (Too dangerous, not trying it)? Or maybe by using Mobile Odin / FlashFire, downgrading from 4.4 to 4.3 / 4.2 can be acheived, if the bootloader is left untouched? What happens if we try it anyways? Odin fail, or device does boot but doesn't get past Samsung boot logo?
I'm just wondering, and quite confused by the different opinions that were shared. Remember this is for the Canadian I337M variant.
Thanks for confirming, appreciate!
So I got my father's old Note 3 after I lost a Z5 in Disneyland, I updated from JB to KK through OTA and installed SuperSU with Towelroot (Knox is still 0x0). I want to clear up some confusions before I go ahead and trip Knox:
AFAIK 4.4+ boot.imgs are not compatible with 4.3 aboot (and vice versa) and you can't downgrade the bootloader once it's updated (you can't odin a older firmware as a result). Will MM roms work with my current BL (rev counter 2)? I wasn't happy with the performance of stock 5.0 the last time I used a N3 and I don't want to risk losing the ability to revert to 4.4.2 if something went wrong with 6.0.
I'm probably sounding stupid but I never tinkered with a Samsung before.
MM is worser than LP so stay with KK.
I like my AryaMod 6.0.1 ROM, but no clue about BL. I always use newest. Why is tripping KNOX a problem? Warranty is no more anyways.
