I want one of these.
It will look good beside my PlayBook, TouchPad and Transformer.

Any idea what version of Android they're using as a base for this puppy?

I hope they are using Honeycomb, if not i don't think its worth it

2.xxx most likely.

I've heard rumors of Eclair, but nothing concrete.
Not that it matters. If I were looking at one it would be to root and get an AOSP ROM running on. Was just curious.

It's cheap because of the 'limited' features, no camera, no microphone, WiFi only, low storage and no video out. It's basically just a battery and a screen.
I haven't seen anything about the processor, gpu or battery life yet, (apart from the dual core reference) but since it is apparently based on the Playbook, perhaps we can expect something similar to that.

Does it have microSD card?

From what I have read
Based on what I was able to read and what is being posted on Google+ . . . Twitter . . . you name it, the rumor is that the device is going to run its own "custom" version of Android.
EDIT:
Even Amazon's page doesn't really mention "android" just that it's sleek and fast. My guess is that they are going to try to move away from being labeled "android" and move to just using android to further the purpose of the tablet.

I do, however, want to get a hold of the "amazon silk" browser so I can check it out before I decide whether or not I want to get it.
My guess is that someone would have to pull the browser apk out of the image after the tablet release before I could even think of looking at it.

Not seen it confirmed or denied yet, but I doubt it since it has 'Unlimited' storage via Amazon's cloud. Also no volume buttons, the only button is the power button...

We Need To Gear Up
Someone need to find the bootloader for the Fire. We need to port CM7 on this device. I can't live with that "Plain Jane" interface Amazon is using.

not too worried about the volume buttons. would like to know more about the processor. if the processor isnt better than the nook, it appears to be the nook integrated with amazon. and the price is nice.
either way, i would love to see one in person.
though, until cm7/android is ported to it directly, i think ill hold off getting one, since i already have a nook w/ cm7 and was hoping for something a little snappier, maybe honeycomb.
there is also a rumor (yea, i know, rumors) that they will have a 10" in the new year. like a DX to the original kindle... a fire DX to the fire...

I'm quite surprised how similar it is to a PlayBook, check the pics. It looks practically identical, the only obvious difference (in these not so good pics) is the logo and the small slit at the bottom of the PlayBook bezel. The size, shape screen all look identical, so perhaps the internals will be pretty similar too, ie better than the Nook...

Seems like a critical question.
Without a microSD slot (or other means of removable storage), the 8G internal memory would severely limit extending its capabilities.

So, after many speculation it has a QUAD core CPU, 2GB RAM and a 5MP Camera. The only drawback is the 720 screen, not 1080, but anyway it is the perfect tablet imho, you can do everything with it!.

That's WAY too expensive for a tablet.
Especially since it is a 16GB. They can't compete with prices like that.

A Watcom digitizer is alone 200$ and when the tablet will be available on proper retail channels it will be around 550$. So, under that price it will worth every penny.

If the pen is not necessary, this is a subpar tablet. The TF700 is better.

This is the only thing that makes me want the tablet, SPen, and also Samsung build quality, i own the Prime and i know what i am talking about. TF700 suffers the same I/O problems like TF201.

I have been saving since introduction of first iPad to buy this. I have used windows tablets with wacom pens and only I know how frustrating that is.

it's a beautiful tablet with a great specs and s-pen but it's a little bit expensive.
i wonder what for the infra-red, remote control what, note 2 maybe?! samsung smart tv maybe?

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 also has IR for the control of TVs and other IR enabled devices.

BTW, this device has the Apt-x codec for bluetooth audio (also BT 4.0 I believe). This codec works great and is sort of rare right now. OS X has it built in but it's sometimes difficult to use (other codecs compete, for some reason). Anyway, there is presently only a handful of devices that use this. I want it as I own a Soundmatters Foxl that uses this codec. It works well and sounds better than regular bluetooth audio (which is marginal).
Note: It's interesting that OS X has this codec but iOS does not. Lame. Also, it's apparently one of the only Android device that uses it.

I hope it does have exFat support (ntfs in my dreams .. ), my Prime has it.

What is it that you are missing?

Strange, why no 1080p? This one is top of the line Samsung tablet at the moment, should got at least 1080p. 1280x800 for 10.1" tablet is so yesteryear imo. Battery concern? Mali-400 can't handle 1080p?

When I sit down and give it a bit more thought perhaps I am being over critical...I just can't get excited yet! Will have to wait and see how it fairs in hands on reviews. I just hope the S Pen calibration is improved over the N7000. As a left handed user I find it pretty poor and the continuous cycle of having to reset the 'left handed' calibration option in the pen options is just frustrating, especially on a device designed to work with a pen! A slight bump in screen resolution and processor speed would have been a nice touch, though on balance these aren't necessarily going to be deal breakers.

I really don't need 1080 screen resolution...it comes with age (worse eye site)
As for pen, it's something different because it has 1024 pressure levels, not just 256 like our Note does.
Another selling point for me is the inclusion of 2GB of RAM, dreaming of dual booting in Ubuntu (or in worst case WinRT which needs a lot of RAM).

im in two minds whether to exchange it or not, but it seems the shield is more future proof and has better tech.. not sure if this is worth double the price of the fire tv4k
i dont need to play games, although its a good option. im considering selling the controller to compensate the cost slightly as i use my logitech touch as a remote
i mainly use kodi / plex / bbc iplayer
will there be other apps coming i.e other uk channels

Right now you can get the Nvidia Shield TV for $150 so it's a no brainer ?
The Nvidia Shield TV is a more powerful system than the PS3, so there's no comparison with the Fire TV. And yes 4K/60FPS is what you'll want for the future if not right now if you own a 4K TV. And that controller is absolutely amazing with a very high level of functionality and features.

do you think its worth swapping the controller for 360 controllers?

Its an impressive peace of kit for what it is, ill give you that, but, "ps3"?
I'd be very surprised to learn its as powerfull as a last gen console, dont get me wrong, the shields got some horse power, for sure, but not sure about ps3 hardware level.........where did you read this?

The GPU is twice as powerful as that in the xbox 360 according to Nvidia

Yeah the Nvidia Shield and Tegra X1 SoC are quite capable. There's even a Crysis 3 Port that exists in beta form though as of yet unreleased. Not to mention that existing games that have been ported to Android specifically for the TK1/TX1 run fluidly and some with adjustable quality settings owing to their origins as PC Ports (i.e. The Talos Principle).

Besides the plethora of existing ports of some older graphically intense games, there's also Dolphin Emulator and the high-end application of the Nvidia Shield as a 4K Media Player (@60FPS). Not to mention that some Android Games support 4K and would automatically be fairly graphically intense at high resolutions.

Yes now where are the games that actually utilize all of this power. In the back of my mind I am worried that they will not come like Nvidia said they will.

Is nvidia shield android tv worth buying at this point?

My knockoff android tv set-top box is crap so I am considering to buy nvidia shield android TV. Considering it was released just under a year ago, I am worried that there will be a better version released soon and I would spend my money on obsolete version. Will there be a newer version soon?

A year goes by, and nothing has been able to beat it thusfar.
Nvidia are quite good with long term support, so expect this device to last atleast another three to five years.
This is a box aimed at the livingroom. They aren't going to bring one out every year. That's the whole reason they made it 13 times more powerful than anything else out there.
You just have to compare the latest flagship Galaxy S7 with the Shield TV to see that.

No no no. It doesn't even have close to the future standard of 4k video will be. It is 30hz, not hdmi 2.0, doesn't support 10 bit color, etc, etc. The shield is the only thing that wll still work with 4k netflx in a couple years everything else will be deemed "outdated".

Well seeing as i dont have a 4K TV those setting are irrelevent at the moment.
Also the Fire TV is £85 cheaper than the Shield just now so yes,yes yes :good:

If you don't have a 4k tv then yes I guess don't get the shield. Without 4k it's just a big toy to be honest.

Nice. Got the item delivered today. It's upgrading it to 3.0 on its own.
Considering that I do have a 4K TV, good investment.

To be honest, yes it's the best buy you can make. There are some issuies with 3.0, but they are fixing it. Also keep in mind that you can bevefit from allot of feautres of the shield tv like if you have a GTX GPU

Price on the hardware is going down, more and more reasons to own one over time, and the AnTutu benchmark app listed my shield android tv (with tons of apps running in the background) as being nearly twice the total performance overall of the 2nd place result. It's not the best of everything, but where it shines ... it shines a lot , where it's not the best, it's still able to compete with some of the best out there. It's been out about a year, and yet it's still the highest performing device. It plays everything you throw at it... and there's so much it does right that I can't suggest against owning one unless the person can't afford it.

Please don't listen to this guy. The Shield can do HDMI 2.0, 4K output, 4:4:4 chroma, bitstream audio,etc, etc. Basically the newest most current technology.

Better specs, clean Android, beautiful screen and very, very well made hardware, with the additional Plus of having an SD-card slot. By now I am on my 4th Nexus 7, which I mainly use use for eBook reading and some casual gaming, but the problems with the USB slot and the easily defective memory are a nuisance and I have been on the market for an alternative for more than 3 years. The Tab 4 for me is that alternative.
I've had it for a couple of days now and while it is not wildly popular (yet), there is already TWRP available AND root through Magisk.
Finally a decent tablet with USB-C, nice hardware, very good screen time (basically sames as the Nexus 7) and an up to date Android version without significant bloatware (Except for Microsoft Office, which you can uninstall easily, since it's not a system app).
I hope to see a thriving community around this tablet; it's worth it and will please those who have been happy with their Nexus 7, but are looking for a more modern piece of hardware as a successor.

Just have to charge wireless since 6 month. Bud there is no factory Image coming so as long as custums are coming I am good to go. But the Lenovo looks promising

When i first saw this, i thought, this is the only upgrade to my 4 year old nexus 7....but sadly lenovo did not launch the 4/64 version in India....i don't know what to buy now..iPad looks like the only choice

I'd suggest the Huawei T2 7.0 Pro. I have both it and the Nexus 7. The Huawei is lighter, smaller, better battery, slightly better CPU/GPU, Micro SD slot, fingerprint sensor.
Oh and it can take a micro sim and be used as a cell phone.
The only negatives:
Only works on 2.4ghz wifi
Android 5.01 only currently
No NFC
No wireless charging
Otherwise it is a worthy successor. There are tons of 8" tablets available but for sheer portability (and why the nexus 7 was so popular in the first place), the T2 is a viable option.
Huawei also had the Media Pad X2 7.0 which has far superior hardware but I have been unable to find one to purchase anywhere.
I also used the Nexus 7 primarily as an E-Reader (I have had it with junk E-Ink devices, kobo and kindle are garbage)
but my Nexus 7 has a stuck reboot loop issue if it powers down.

Not only that, it's also got Micro-USB, not USB-C. Deal breaker.
Same goes for the Huawei, Micro USB.
The Lenovo is also availble in an LTE version. I don't need that, got a nice phone with an international contract as hotspot, so no more additional contracts for me, WiFi does the job for me.

The Lenovo does look like a solid device. For me the size though is a no go. Plus I have not seen it for sale anywhere in Canada. No clue what the supposed release date is.

What about superfish?

What tablets run stock Android or very close to? I want a tablet that will get new major Android releases.

Pretty much only the Nexus 7 is stock.
That doesn't seem to matter though. Google discontinued updates on the Nexus 7 after Android 6.0.1.

Ya, I gave up waiting. Hence the Huawei that I have been using.

I just pulled mine out of the closet to check for updates and can't believe it still has a better screen then these Xiaomi phones I keep buying.

As bad as it's going to sound. I'm glad Apple is finally in the wireless charging game. Ya know they're likely to drop an iPad with it soon, and this may inspire the creation of other wireless charging tablets. It's really the only thing holding me back from replacing the Nexus 7 2013.
