Yeah I know, not the first thread on the subject
I am a rather happy owner of a Galaxy Tab for the past 36 hours and I just wanted to share my feelings about the usage as a phone. Until I own it I was pretty much convinced this was going to be my main phone, just a question of being able to use a Bluetooth headset with it.
I am not 100% sure anymore.
First, and probably because it's the first time I use a headset I have found this much less convenient than using a phone (This is hopefully just a question of getting used to it). Can't see who is calling (Yep with the right headset the name will show, I may purchase one, but still wont have the picture), people around can hear much better what you're saying, if if you have to manipulate the tab for whatever reason, given its size you feel clumsy
Second, texting while walking in the street is pretty much more difficult. The Tab is big, easy to drop (Read the few threads around of people who broke their screen). It takes me half a second to take my Touch Pro 2 out of my pocket, get the keyboard out and type some messages while walking. And given its size I nearly never dropped it (And whenever I did it always survived without being wounded ). I am definitely slower with my tab (Plus I have to get used to use an on-screen keyboard, but then yeah on this I guess it's a question of getting used to it)
Third (maybe funny): while in meetings I didn't see anybody raise an eyebrow whenever I was texting with my TP2 (looks a bit like a blackberry and anyway quite discrete) I can see how much attention I draw whenever I answer some txt or emails now ! And with the screen size it make sit easy to see what I ma doing... Not the Tab's neg, but for me kind of a drawback
Last one (This one may make some laugh): I love clubbing, bar hoping, etc... I thought it would fit my back pocket. And it does ! however try dancing with that in your back pocket... That's not gonna work And there is no way I'd leave my phone at the cloak, I need it with me (take phone numbers, give direction to friends, etc...). I'd be better off leaving the Tab in the cloak and still go around with a small device (Even an average sized device like my TP2 handles OK while dancing)
I love the form factor, so easy to carry around, but in the end I understand much better Blackberry's approach with the Playbook, it's probably the best way to go, and I am considering using the Tab as a second device.
However I see the pain ahead... Don't wanna have 2 plans. And that's where it sucks. It seems in many countries you are able to have 2 SIM cards with the same number (With kind of a master device and a slave one). Couldn't find anything similar with AT&T in the US If anybody ever heard of this kind of services.... It would be perfect. Then I can still swap SIM cards but that sucks... (And I guess if you do it 5 times a day you may damage your SIM (If not lose it while dropping it)). Another solution is to tether the phone to the Tab (Great I paid for a 3G Tab for nothing !!) but on that I am quite worried about the battery life of both devices Maybe through Bluetooth rather than Wifi ? Would consume less ? If anybody has an idea... Or could try SIM cloning... But it seems it's not really possible anymore with SIM v2 (And besides if the operator doesn't offer the service described above I guess there will be conflicts between the 2 devices at some stage (Not 100% sure but possible)
Anyway... Don't flame me, would just be happy to exchange on the subject with people who have found solutions, have ideas on the matter, or just inform future buyers
Waoh, zero interest on the subject !
Well, i dont have one, but i can defiantly see where using it as a phone could lead to some problems, even if it does fit in you back pocket. It is interesting that you attempted it though, but pulling it out at meetings...thats priceless

I think the irony is that most of us in Europe wouldn't consider using the Tab as primary phone even though it is a fully functional phone, whereas in the US it's the other way around.

In the UK, we don't have the ability to have multiple SIMs with the same phone number either, but it is far less of an issue compared to the US because we have an extremely competitive market for data.
For example, on T-Mobile in the UK, for £20 (around $32) I can get 6 months worth of mobile internet with 1GB FUP which is ideal for a Tab which doesn't go out and about too often - and there's no overages, just an understanding that they may restrict service if you regularly go over your FUP allowance.
For £10 ($16) a month, I can get truly unlimited internet (excludes tethering) on Giffgaff which is ideal for the more mobile Tab.
When it comes to contracts, I have a mobile broadband contract on 3 that gives me 15GB a month for £15, which allows tethering etc.
I'm planning on heading over to Florida for 6 or 7 weeks early next year, and I'm probably going to get a MiFi of some sort with a T-Mobile Web Connect SIM, but it's going to be a hell of a lot more expensive than something comparable in the UK.
Regards,
Dave

The thing is since not so many people know what it is, it attracts attention... So it's not very discrete, while a small phone you can type your personal messages during meetings people don't really pay attention (Or think you're sending professional messages)

Well... I am European... (Although I live in NY)
US carriers suck for data plans. I lived in japan and HK before where for half the price I got much better service... Definitely for £10 a month I wouldn't even bother thinking about using my phone SIM card in my Tab to take advantage of my unlimited data plan (Which by the way in the SU looks more and more like it will be limited by throttling down once you reach a threshold.............)
Why would you need 2 plans with AT&T tab? I guess you didn't want to flash her.
Your other points are completely valid. It is just a matter of personal opinion/wanting to replace the phone with tab enough. Thanks for sharing!
Here are some workarounds you could investigate:
Try a bluetooth stereo headset with a display.
Use the Sony LiveView and wear as a watch.
Type with a tiny bluetooth keyboard.
Get a separate smartphone with a VNC client. Turn on the mobile hotspot, on your Galaxy Tab, and then control it with the smaller smartphone.
How is the Galaxy Tab's battery life as a phone, by the way?
Thanks for the post. I've been thinking to get the tab to replace my I9000 as the main phone, but after I read your post, I think I'll hold it for a while .....

I thought about these options... Still not satisfying

Chinese octacore note 4 = $927.61 USD (5700 RMB)
Okay, so I really need you guys to carry me here, I'm here in China backpacking, and Note 4 is for sale everywhere.. I can buy one in any Samsung, or electronics vendor right now if I want.. That said I'm really unsure if I should buy it here, or wait till I go back to the US in a few days.. I'm not sure if I want the Octacore or Quad. btw if anyone wants me to take a video or do any testing of anything here on the octacores, theres all the Note 4s you could ever want here, I've notice at least 2 different firmwares so far on these babies.
Internet is very unstable here, and most American sites are blocked or just dont connect, so my ability to research is limited to a very small selection of sites, so please excuse my outdated and lacking knowledge.
IF the $200 dollar trade in promotion works via Samsung, are we able to get BestBuy's $200 dollar store credit + Samsung's $200 Cash Back? or does going the BestBuy route void Samsungs offer?
Will the Octacore have the badass audio chip the s3 and s4 international had? (cause thats cool)
I cant even load any pages here to research.. besides some obvious smaller dev stuff; with Xposed in the game now, will there be any significant support differences between octa vs quad?
*at this time i do not have a carrier, when I return to US, I will look for a carrier (probably tmobile/att, or some third party that uses their networks, gotta look at what 2014 phone plans look like)
Also reallllllly unrelated but felt like mentioning, the LED is far weaker on the note 4 than the s3/s4 (@ flashlight apps)~
sooooo im gonna throw this post out here, go climb a mountain and hopefully have an internet connection again at some point before i hop on a plane, love you guys <33333

Be very careful to make sure you know exactly which model you are purchasing. Strong chance you won't have many of the LTE bands you would need for service once you return to the US.
I've been studying various phones over the last 2 months going crazy choosing a phone $300 or less that's best for me. The line between $200 to $300 is huge on androids. 2-3 GB ram usually and a 600-800 snapdragon with most being the 615. So of course my stop is at the OP3. I had other phones in mind like Honor 5X, Nexus 5x, zenfone 2 variants, droid maxx (2014) and so on. Lack of development and potential mods left me from other choices. Every phone lacks a feature and some have features. For this price there is no perfect phone. So I'm asking guys who made the choice to this phone. Are there regrets vs the $300 or less options?
how i wish it has wireless charging and fast charging and it'll be a perfect Phone for me. but i guess OnePlus didnt add that to the OP2 so that you'll buy the OP3
I've never found or had a "perfect" phone. I got this OP2 a couple weeks ago, worked great with stock firmware (update came out same day i got the phone lol). I have issues with my Pioneer head unit playing media audio, but other BT devices work for it so I'm not sure what the problem is there.
I flashed AOSPA on the device and it runs great, same BT issue as stock firmware.
Here's things I've noted:
- 4gb ram for the price
- 64gb storage isn't bad, meets my needs but not expandable.
- It charges in 1 1/2 - 2 hours with the included charger & cable, which is "okay".
- Fingerprint sensor works very quickly, I hear after that update it works better then most devices.
- Very sturdy design with the metal (and sandstone back = no slip!), but it is heavier then my old LG G3. Not sure if I'll be able to magnet mount it in my car yet.
- 1080p screen doesn't look any different then the 1440p i had on the G3, good color balance.
I think it is a good purchase for the price!
At this point, the OP2 seems like a great device to me. Though, I will suggests that you also look at the Moto X Pure. You really can't go wrong with either of them though!

I've looked at it and many other phones. My phone purchase has been a 2 month long research project. Nexcus 5x, Honor 5x, Zenfone 2 variants, so on and so on. The Pure is the same price as the OP2 but with 16GB internal or $349 for 32 and $399 for 64GB which is a little out of my price range. My max is $300 and from Amazon I get a 10% discount being an employee
This will be a at&t US carrier who I will be switching to. Boost is my current carrier and Verizon before that. In 2015 I remember issues with One Plus on at&t. Have those issues been addressed. I guess I'll be getting the sim kit from at&t and doing my hookup through the internet hopefully

if it works its great, but if not.....
Hello.
I have plenty of regrets; but I'll keep to just bashing their customer service.
I have had to contact customer service twice now and I will take you through it step by step.
first time about 4 months ago my phone started acting up (less then six months after i bought it); all three buttons on the front stopped working, the screen could no longer auto adjust the brightness, for some reason the battery drained absurdly quick and the phone overheated. after about a week of jumping through a few hoops to prove tho phone had actually broken down and I wasn't just whining I got to send my phone for repair.
the first thing you'll notice is that they don't get back to you with status updates (except for trying to close your ticket due to inactivity every few days) so you have to ask all the time whats happening. two weeks after I sent them my phone I finally get an answer saying they repaired my phone and will send it back and they gave me a tracking number.
when I looked up that tracking number it turned out the phone had already been in my home town at the ups facility for four days, so just because they didn't feel like sending me updates I spent four more days then I had to without my phone. so not the worst customer experience I ever had but still not very good.
fast track forward to about two weeks ago.
the phone breaks down again, this time I can't make or receive neither phone calls or text messages and the 4g/3g internet connection stopped working. I try two separate sim cards in the phone and none of them work, I try my sim in my girlfriends phone and there it works fine, so it's definitely the OP2 that broke down.
so I open a ticket with Oneplus, the same thing happens this time with absolutely no contact from them, I have to nag and contact them over and over just to know whats going on, no one from Oneplus ever sends an update. and this time it's worse because now they haven't even gotten to the point where I send them my phone, its been over a week since I opened the ticket and NOTHING has happened like literally nothing, it's as if I haven't even opened a ticket. and this is very annoying because I had to borrow an ancient piece of **** replacement phone i the meantime.
it is really starting to look like I might have to buy a new phone from someone else because they can't seem to fix their broken piece of ****.
TL;DR
so I guess my tip to anyone who's is thinking of buying anything from Oneplus is : don't. even though yes the phone is great, its quick and easy and fabulous in many ways but if it breaks down (which it seems like a lot of them do), you might as well just buy a new phone because the customer service is horrid.
thanks for reading...
We are on the same boat OP. months passed until now but still I can't decide which should I get. :/
My preferences:
Good Community Support (future proof)
Great Camera and battery life
Almost stock experience
These are my choices:
Nexus 5x
OnePlus 2
Redmi Note 3 Pro
and now the OnePlus 3.
The nexus 5x is very affordable now but what holds me back from getting it was the 2gb ram and no dual sim capability, as I become lazy now to bring 2 phones and I used only small body bag going to work. and for the 1+2 I've read some issues like the dead home buttons and no fast charging support.
Hello XDA folks,
Two note 4's in the family both having same issue. After applying update N910VVRU2CQC1 in mid April our Verizon Note 4's have had a TON of issues disconnecting from network. Tried turning off advanced calling, had SIM cards replaced, etc...
Per Verizon rep in store, they've had a LOT of people coming in complaining of the exact same issue, and stated they've heard it's an issue across all service providers, not just Verizon. Basically Samsung broke it... my inner conspiracy theorist assumes it's so I go buy the new S8, but I'm not a fan of making a screen that can't play 99% of things in their native format. I can't even watch movies on a 3:4, let alone would I pay a ton for something that has black bars on the edge.
That said, here are my questions:
1. I'm likely going to root and just avoid the issue altogether, so could anyone advise their favorite android OS that I can pull from here that is very stable and tested? (can't afford to miss client calls).
2. If this fails, how do you all feel about the one plus three for a cheaper model phone? Looks pretty good, and probably faster than my note 4.
3. Feelings on Google Pixel if I decide to go the expensive route?
4. Always loved HTC, thoughts about the 10 or Ultra? (Oddly enough HTC's site advertises it to look pretty but didn't post much. Wondering if the HTC 10 and Ultra is like the S4 and Note 4 for Samsung. Prefer the larger phone).
Any other thoughts on how to move forward, or any other favorite non Samsung phones would be much appreciated.
Thank you for your time!
Hey everyone,
I have the S8 International edition and I am currently using android pay to look after my touchy payments. I am toying with the idea of getting a gear S3 watch (if I can afford one) and that obviously only supports Samsung Pay.
Does anyone have any thoughts on Samsung Pay vs Android Pay and do you know in the UK if it is supported by Natwest? I have seen a few write ups containing the following "It currently supports payment networks including Visa and MasterCard, and cards issued by Santander, Nationwide and MBNA, with HSBC, First Direct, M&S Bank and American Express said to be joining soon." but this has no mention of Natwest in it at all :/
Any thoughts or opinions would be great
I recently looked into the difference and it seems like the big one is samsung pay also uses something called MST which mimics magnetics strips so it supposedly is capable of being used in more places you wouldn't ordinarily be able to use android/apple pay. Someone probably knows the differences a bit better than I do though.
MST is the only reason to use Samsung Pay other than the fact they give you cash back points regardless of what card you use. Only Samsung Pay has MST which basically means you can use it at ANY terminal which can read magnetic strips.

I am pretty sure that we don't use the MST technology in the UK anymore. I don't think the card machines have it now. I gathered that was the maim difference so doesn't really matter which service I use. Thanks for the info

I think I've used it maybe once or twice in the last 10 years when the chip on my card was playing up. Infact MST is disabled in Samsung Pay UK, so it offers nothing over Android Pay.

Haha , good old UK restrictions! In that case then the only "benefit" of it is that I could use it on a Gear S3 if I get one
Thanks everyone for the input!

Correct.
Although if Samsung decides to offer rewards in the UK, that could be a good reason to use it over Android Pay. Google seem to have promotions every now and then, like the Christmas cracker Android Pay promotion. This I believe is how a particular service will "win" over the competition, especially here in the UK were they are all very similar.

I've actually only been using Android Pay since I got the S8 as my last phone was the OP2 and it doesn't have NFC , so I haven't come across any offers or anything as of yet. Interesting thought though
For me, Samsung Pay is the biggest reason why I continue to purchase the Galaxy's. Since it uses MST tech, I'm able to pay with my phone at almost all locations I go to, including taxi's and delis in NYC that have old card machines. No NFC? No problem. I still get employees telling me "Our machines don't work paying with your phone", I still do it, it works, and they're like "What phone is that?".
