Low phone speaker volume on BT - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi folks,
I have an unrooted, stock N6P on Android 6.0.1. which connects to my car's radio via bluetooth so that I can stream audio from my phone and make and take calls via hands free. My satnav app of choice is Waze which has an option that very few other competing apps have which means that even when the phone is connected to the car via bluetooth the TTS voice navigation instructions are still played through the phone's speakers rather than through the car radio. Certainly TT Go and Google Maps Nav both play all sounds via bluetooth when connected.
There seems to be a problem whereby for no apparent reason every so often when this option is enabled the volume of the phone speaker goes very quiet - almost inaudible over the car - despite all available volumes in the OS and in the app being at 100%. When I disable the option the speaker volume returns to normal when not connected but when connected all the sounds go through the car radio - so unless I've got the right input selected I hear nothing and I get no TTS announcements while listening to the radio or CD.
It has worked fine since I bought the phone last November and this is not tied to app version nor Android updates as since it's gone quiet I've tried installing various older versions of the Waze app (previous versions which didn't show any problem) and I hadn't and haven't installed an Android update since some weeks before. Nevertheless the volume has dropped and I can't find a way to turn it back up again. From Waze's support forums it does seem to be a problem prevalent on Nexus devices though.
Is there another setting in Android somewhere, not for bluetooth volume but for phone speaker volume when connected via bluetooth?
Many thanks!

It's an issues i think. Lot of people have it. Try factory reset.

Naviagtion sound over cell speakers when connected to car kit

I have my Defy (red lens, CM9) connected to my bluetooth carkit (Skoda/VW RNS510/Columbus), when it's connected it outputs the sound of the navigation (iGO Primo2) to the bluetooth. Is it possible to make it play the sound trough the speaker of the phone?
I like to listen to the FM-radio when navigating and the RNS510 is so slow changing audio source that I don't hear any of the navigation instructions + it doesn't switch back to the FM when the instructions are finished.
Hi,
I reported a related BUG here.
I had also issues in combination to the original motorola car cradle (had to rotate the car cradle 180° to prevent the magnet to activate car-mode).
I don't think it's due to CM9 or 10 because I had the same problem with CM7
For me it was working on CM7 and MS2Ginger.
How did you get iGO to put its sound on the cell's speaker instead of bluetooth or did it just do it like that?

Oh,... I meant my issue was working on CM7 and MS2Ginger... I am using Navigon together with Holo FM and the Radio APP suppresses the Navigon voice almost completely.
I think all "normal" audio gets automatically routed to headset or external speaker if connected. IGO must have an own build in switch to prevent it from using headset/ext-speaker. If it has none it should be impossible.
On Navigon there is an option weather sounds should been played over bluetooth (2 chanels possible). Unfortunately if it is switched of the sound doesn't play on the internal speaker either.
Sorry to mislead you with my former post....
I've been testing a bit more with iGO and sound going over the Bluetooth.
When my Defy is connected to the car and I then toggle the media option in de Bluetooth menu, it sends all navigation directions to the phone speaker but when I leave the car and get back in, it goes back over bluetooth, I then have to toggle the media option again (it doesn't matter if media is selected or deselected, the behaviour changes because off the toggle)
I solved it. There's an app that lets you route the sound to the speaker: SoundAbout
It lets you route mediasound to speaker. So bluetooth keeps handeling your calls, works great.
Please ask all questions in Q&A. Thread moved there.

Bluetooth calling / contacts in-car

So I took delivery of my shiny new Nexus 4 yesterday at work and as soon as I got in the car I paired up the bluetooth. Then somebody called me and the steering wheel controls wouldn't answer the phone. I've tested this several times now and that seems to always be the case. If I initiate a call from the phone though, it does relay the call over the bluetooth.
Secondly, the car cannot see the contacts in the phone. It just either tells me that 'no phonebook is available' or 'the phonebook is empty'. The car has never asked me for permission to read the phone book, even though I have unpaired, factory defaulted (the car B/T) and re-paired several times.
I had similar issues with my HTC Sensation when running 4.2 but the Sensation and car worked flawlessly together when using a Sense-based ROM.
Does anybody have any fixes for these issues? Not being able to use the car controls is a bit of killer to be honest. Not displaying the phone book is not great but at least if the car can control the phone I can use it to answer calls. I tried installing Bluetooth Phonebook but it didn't seem to make any difference.
Radio out car if using stock radio would really help here. I have JVC in the double din in the Saab and an eclipse in the wrx. JVC works as designed most of the time after the new update. Eclipse does not support PBA protocol. But controls work (minus pause on Google play app)

This one is still frustrating me. I have discovered that if I initiate or answer a call on the phone itself, it plays through the car speakers perfectly but it isn't possible to control the phone from the car controls.
I believe the problem is at least in part that I haven't had the pop-up on the phone with the car asking for permission - I did see it once after leaving the car but when I sent to activate it, the prompt disappeared.
So my question is still: Is there a way to force that permission setting, and if not does anybody have a workaround?

I'm in the same position
I've had my Nexus 4 for about a month. It worked fine 100% with my car till (coincidentally??) I went from the stock kernel to faux123's.
I have a 2008 Audi A6, which only allows voice - no option for streaming music across unfortunately. The phone paired, I Ok'ed the request to share call history, checked the "don't ask again", and I could make and receive calls from the car's controls. So far so good, just like my previous Gingerbread phone.
I don't think the new kernel was to blame - could it have been a google apps update? - but since then I can delete and re-pair the phone, I OK the share call history and "don't ask again" option, BUT the car's controls don't initiate or answer calls.
I went back to the stock kernel, tried Franco's, just moved to ParanoidAndroid's latest ROM+kernel - with all the necessary wipes - still no luck with getting the car's controls to work. I can start a call from the phone, or answer an incoming call on the phone, and it will play through the speakers, but it's a royal PITA, as well as illegal and dangerous.
So, I guess it ain't the kernel, but I just can't work out what changed. I have frozen Google+, Google Search, plenty of reboots and wiping the pairing off both devices.
I've done a good few searches, and it seems Google have never had a really clean bluetooth stack, and Volkswagens/Audis seem to suffer more than others.
But my Desire HD worked like a dream

I have no problems with bluetooth, calling or music streaming, in my 2013 Ford Focus using Ford SYNC. I'm stock 4.2.2.
Check tune2air BT adapter from viseeousa.com. My mom let me use her car and I want to stream music in it but I can't seem to do it in her car. So I found a solution, bought the WMA3000A with built-in AMI cable and i have BT steaming, and able to control, read, ,display music using original steering wheel and head unit controls. You can also check and try the 30pin WMA1000 model which plugs into any 30pin iPod integration cable.

[Q] Bluetooth Connects but sometimes no Media Sound

I have a Nexus 4, still running 4.2.1.
I use bluetooth headphones with it which generally work. However, sometime they connect and media sound still comes out the phone speaker,
Disconnecting and reconnecting doesn't help. The awkward trick I've learned is to run the Vonage phone app, and make a phone call, which some how turns the media sound on in the headphone.
There has to be a better workaround than that.
I know there were some bluetooth fixes in 4.2.2, but I don't want to upgrade until I've tested LTE which rumor says is coming next month in Atlanta.
No replies? I can't be the only one seeing this.
I can be a little more definite. It seems that on the first bluetooth connect from an ad2p device after a reboot, media sound still goes to the internal speaker. As I mentioned above I happened on a terrible workaround. If I invoke the vonage app and place a call with it suddenly the bluetooth device takes over the media sound.
It's painful to have to make a call just to kick the bluetooth headphone into media mode.
I don't know if it is the same issue, but my ad2p cuts out sometimes and won't work until a reboot. (It still shows up as working, and sound stops coming from the phone, but...) On 4.2.2 here.
I'll have to give your placing a call trick a try.

Issues with Bluetooth Audio

I'm starting to think my phone is defective... Anyone having issues with Bluetooth audio? Paired it to 2 different cars of different manufacturers (obviously not at the same time) and the phone randomly disconnects and/or "lags" when it's playing offline Spotify songs. Rebooted and it didn't make a difference. Anyone else?

had no trouble pairing with my car and it connects extremely fast. way faster than my note 7 or note 4. using the phone as well in the car works great. might be your phone
No problems in my Acura as well. I like how you can quickly choose what device to play A2DP with. Very convenient. Try to re-pair the devices in both cars. Also, remember to clear the devices (as well as all past devices no longer in use), from the car's computer.
I am seeing some similar issues. PocketCast randomly pauses and restarts while streaming, Spotify instead experiences random volume increases and decreases. New 2016 Ram with updated uconnect.
No issues with my 2012 Mazdaspeed 3 - it actually works bettr than my Samsung phones
I had some issues at the beginning to connect to my Golf 2015 but after it worked out everything works great now.
No problem connecting to my 2012 Chrysler. Only problem is now I can not see any info streaming. Anyone have a fix for this. Spotify, Pandora or mp3
No problem with my subaru
same issue with my volvo
The last two versions of Spotify have been terrible (6.3 and 6.5) they both have bluetooth issues. I suggest trying to downgrade to 6.2 and see if that resolves the issue.
I couldn't control music at all with Bluetooth under version 6.3 or 6.5, they would work for 5 min then stop working if you need more directions on how to do this just reply here.

I am experiencing the same issues when connected to my aftermarket car stereo. I find that it is happening with local audio book files in two different apps. The audio gets garbled and cuts out completely, but the app keeps going, so no pauses. This is driving me crazy! Hopefully LG has a fix soon!
I lost connection to my BT speaker when I went out on my deck yesterday. That was never an issue with my G3. Its only about 20 feet.

Pretty sure it's Spotify....I've had all kinds of issues with Spotify since the last update. I loose button control in my Camry, and on my lg tone platinum headphones. Also the the widget quits working and the album art screen quits showing up... No fix yet
Problem could be with nougat!! Pixel users are having issues as well.
I know most dont speak about 7.0 or the V20 but We are currently the only one with 7.0 and the V20 which dont get much press.

Couple of things to try and narrow down:
1. Bluetooth hardware (4.2 BLE for us), so software/hardware versions of both bluetooth and radio unit for the host is the variable...
2. Bluetooth music choice (spotify, music player etc.)
3. Is location of app and/or music files on external sd card?
4. Ensuring theres a "media audio" profile on your BT connection. This can be checked by going to the BT settings of the paired device on your phone.
Personally I've had a good experience with this phone compared to the v10 or even the s7 edge. Music meta data displays on the host unit (aftermarket Pioneer AVH-X4800BS in a '13 Chrysler 200 S type). Audio and mic sound better than the other phones but i have no testing to prove it...
Please post your info and maybe we can narrow it. I have some tech experience dealing with this so I'll try and help
Here's my setup:
1. Pioneer AVH-X4800BS. BT hardware 3.0, software C406 (stock software, needs updating) and radio unit firmware 08.15
2. Spotify and LG music player
3. Downloaded to internal sd card. Streaming as well.
4. Media audio profile present and activated.
Cheers
Edit: I also was experiencing the audio skipping and music player unresponsiveness prior to the v20. My initial guess is the music app goes in the foreground and doesnt get almighty priority treatment that nougut should be giving it if all the above is setup correctly.
An update to my issues as well as my setup to help things along:
On travel last week, my rental car was a Nissan Versa (puke), however, streaming bluetooth with spotify 6.5 worked flawlessly.
Came back to my beloved Ram, cleared both my phone and Uconnect bluetooth connections, repaired my device, and now I am seeing no issues with bluetooth streaming, either spotify or pocketcasts, with the exception of no album art or track time counting. It shows total track time, just no progress.
I believe my issues are with the UConnect system, as it has been a pain in the rear since I bought it last month. Sirius XM resets constantly, cannot connect via USB and Bluetooth at the same time and select USB as the source, etc. (was the same with my iPhone 6 Plus)
My setup:
1. UConnect 5.0 (RA2) Not sure what version of Bluetooth
2. Spotify 6.5 and Pocketcasts
3. Downloaded to internal SD card and streaming
4. Media audio profile present and activated.
I have a 2014 Buick and have the same issue. Works fine then will beggin to studder. Doesnt matter if is local mp3 or streamed from google.. However, as i type, it is the same app. But I am doubtful that is the issue as i get delayed text messages on the vehicle as well. If it is a defective unit i am bummed cuz I just dropped it yesterday and it now owns a a gnarly scuff, took the drop well tho.
I have an LG Urbane as well that also experiences some lag with inbound alerts.
Having streaming issues (DI.FM) in my 2016 Mustang. Stutters, and skips. I'll try to re-pair and see if that works. My S7 Edge worked great, kinda frustrating with the V20. I've also cleared the s& from the Ford Sync. LTE is very strong during my whole commute.
So after I googled a bit more I found a suggestion and it worked for me. Basically go to settings > apps > system apps > bluetooth and force stop the service and clear cache then reboot.. Been smooth since, not sure if this is a permanent fix but if you are having issues its worth a shot.

H870 Bluetooth Issues with VW RNS 315

Hi,
I recently got my LG G6. I'm really satisfied with it. Especially the camera and the performance , but I have a problem with my hands-free equipment in my car .
Everytime I want to use the phone as audio source e.g. Spotify I would have to un-pair and pair the devices again .
I have a Volkswagen Passat 2014 with a RNS 315 and original hands-free equipment.
I can pair the devices without any problem. Also the "connected with audio equipment" option will be displayed on the phone. After a few seconds this option disappears in the overview of the connection details, only "use hands-free" and "sync phone book" will be displayed on the phone. Only in the overview of paired devices I can see that it is connected to the car as audio source. I can use the steering wheel buttons to switch between the tracks and the current title displays on the car radio.
The problem:
After the phone disconnects form the car (remove the key) and it reconnects gain (starting the car again) the phone do not recognize the A2DP protocol anymore and it just connects as hands-free without the ability to play music over the car speakers. I can use the steering wheel controls to switch the music title and the car also displays the current title, but the audio comes from the phone and not from the car speakers. But the car displays the phone as hands-free and audio source.
I had no problem with my Nexus 5X. I have already tried to clear the bluetooth cache and data. I have already tried with an other LG G6 and there was the same problem.
Is there any way to enforce A2DP even if the phone do not recognize it anymore?
The phone software is V11g-EUR-XX with security patch level 6th November 2017.
I hope anyone can help me, because I don't want to send it back.
Same issue here. I have to unpair and pair again if I want media playback to the car. I have tried pretty much every solution I came across and nothing worked apart from pairing again. Having said that, I think the problem is both with the RNS315 and the G6. I had a similar issue with the Note 3 but disconnecting and reconnecting was enough so I was using trigger to get around it. I have a small hope the oreo update may fix it.
