Hi guys
The samsung galaxy note 3's slow motion video is quite bad
I tried both 120fps at 1/4 and 120fps at 1/8.
The output is very low quality comparing to iphone 5s slow motion.
Any feedback is welcome.
Do you know a better slow motion app?
Do you have a recommended settings?

Your right, it doesn't look that great. The people walking by on the left look a bit Blurry. That really sucks.

This feature was the only thing keeping me from flashing an AOSP rom onto my note. Looks like I'll be rocking ParanoidAndroid!

was that at 1/8? or 1/4. 120FPS at 1/8 is still gonna give you a pretty choppy 15fps even if you export the video at 30
from what it looks like, the iphone 5 usually goes to 1/4 which would still be smooth at 30
i noticed discrepancies in different note 2 slow mo videos and how they did things.

It was 1/8 but 1/4 is no different.

however, like i mentioned above, this would one would look better if he shot at 1/4 instead of 1/8 simply because then you're voluntarily reducing it to 15 FPS.
Additionally, looking at iphone5 slomo videos, it's pretty apparent that their movie editor to set the slomo sections does make use of interpolation. Thus, if you really wanted to use the slomo for anything beyond just a for fun thing, and you're editing a video of a trip or something with slow mo sections, just take that 1/4 footage, run it through twixtor and bam, you can even do stuff like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0Kb1hDdseY

Apple's slowmo is post processed, so feel free to compare the two after you post process your own
granted, its more convenient the other way, i THINK the HTC gallery might handle that. considering the camera got ported a few months ago, it's possible the gallery will get ported to make help make slowmo clips on the fly.

Lol ok there buddy, no need to get pissy. Just offering and explanation and solution to your so called "problem"
At the end of the day, 1/8 will come out to 15 FPS in a 30 FPS video. Have you ever played a game at 15 FPS? Its bad. Why would a 15 FPS video magically be better. No matter what, that fact is not going to change. If a few at 1/8 is smooth at 30 FPS, then there is additional interpolation going on. If you actually have the pride to get something done yourself, figure it out, it's not hard. If you want to sit there and continue to whine in the same tone you just did, then you're more than welcome to return your note and get yourself an iPhone, noone will really care.
Quite franky, if I were to speak like you, "i don't care" if you cant get your slomo to look nice, because I know I will be able to. It's the same thing with goPro slow motion video. Have you seen what the RAW looks like? not pretty. Why do those videos look so good? interpolation and post processing. If there was an App on android that handled that, then you can run off and buy it and stop whining. But until then, you will either have to make do....or abandon it.
Just to summarize things again for you in case you actually want to put some work into it rather than complain.
1) If you want to go to 1/8, you'll need to interpolate, period, that's just how it works, learn some video basics if you need to
2) The easiest way for you to do that with the best quality is using sony vegas + twixtor
3) If you want to go deeper into it, I use premiere/after effects + twixtor.
Doing 2000 FPS shots are pretty fun but basic rules of video apply, none of this is magic.
Also seagulls? Have you never seen a duck in your life before?

No worries, I appreciate the change in tone.
I know what you mean, and I feel the same way (on the fly interpolation would be awesome), but if HTC can do it, then i'm sure it's only a matter of time before it gets ported or somebody else writes one on the play store.
As for vegas and twixtor, i'm not allowed to post torrent links or anything like that but both are very popular and should only take 30 minutes to download and you'll be able to do a lot more cool stuff with it anyways.
I was also bitterly disappointed in the slow motion capture on my note 3
Its not that the capture or frame-rate is bad its the overall quality
recording in a 720p resolution don't mean S*%T if the bit-rate is S*%T
Every video ive tried is very distorted and pixelated should never be possible in a 720p hd clip
Samsung needs to better optimise the capture and encoding

Slow motion is a gimmick. It's just a normal video slowed down, there is no 120fps capture going on.
I am perplexed. I've read the user manual and it seems to be lacking on technical details.
Specifically, what is the fps and resolution of these "smooth motion" videos?
Tomorrow I'm recording hand held walking around footage for the first time after moving up from an s3... I'd like to get the video stabilization without 30 minutes of time on my pc post processing, at 1080p.
With of course the rear camera. The full hd from camera is great but washed out.

4K video recording is slowly but surely clawing its way into the mobile scene, and although its adoption is quite limited thus far, some manufacturers who are feeling more adventurous than others are starting to build the feature into some of their premium smartphones. Some of the first models offering 4K video recording are Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 and S5, as well as Sony's Xperia Z2, which recently got released on the market to become what's considered one of the finest handsets money can buy right now (probably until the LG G3 shows up, that is).
However, it turns out that these phones, even though they are officially capable of recording 4K video, cannot deliver an experience we'd consider truly adequate. Why? The answer is simple: they cannot record more than 5 minutes of footage in 4K resolution.

Mine will. I just tried recording 4K twice and stopped it at 10 minutes myself. No excessive heating, no camera force close. The phone gradually got warmer in the area around the camera module, but the temperature rise ceased at around 5 minutes and the temperature remained steady after that.
The new .402 update seems to make a big difference on my device - 4K recording is now lasting around 10mins from cold before it closes down.
The difference however is that it now states that it needs to cool the camera down and will save the video.
I flashed the German unbranded to my UK unbranded phone last night.

3.9 GB (tested by me).
It will be hard to have longer than 10 minute video because of limited capacity od FAT format, which is 4gb. It's just a theory about the videos on this device. Haven't tried formatting card to NTFS or something.

Half true, the Note 3 and S5 are limited to 5 mins by Samsung, the Z2 has no limitation introduced purposfully by Sony, the limitation on the Z2 is the fact that it gets very hot eventually overheating due to the demands on the processor and memory. If your phone wouldn't overheat the Z2 can record until you run out of storage. The article is rather missleading saying how it's overheating right at the end of the article.
Bear it in mind that the time the Z2 can record 4k is highly dependant on the the indevidual phone (some people have seen 15 mins+ whilst others 5 mins, ambient temperature and how hot the phone was before recording 4k.
I have personally recorded 10 mins at 4k, yes the phone's exterior got very hot, but no overheating message.

Originally, I was only able to record about 5 minutes. After the .402 update, I was able to reach 7 minutes before I stopped it myself. However, after I stopped the recording myself, it gave me the overheating message lol.
I don't know if it was just my imagination but it felt as if my phone did not heat up as fast compared to before the update when it got hot in 3 minutes or so. I honestly don't think the update did much for 4k video recording and that I was just able to get to 7+ minutes of 4k recording due to the cooler ambient temperature. Either way, I'm able to consistently reach 5 minutes of 4k recording before and after the update so I'm quite satisfied.
So it sounds like we all agree that the 402 update did help this problem, yes?

I've noticed that 4K video recording seems to be capped at approximately 8 minutes. I've had 2 separate videos stop recording at this time. Has anyone else had this issue and is there a way to bypass it? I have plenty of space on my 64GB 6P, so it'd be great to take advantage of all that space. Is is a processor or heat related issue?
I believe recording is always capped after 4gb (I think that's the limit might be 2). That's happened to me on previous devices when I try to record 1 hour at 1080p would have to remember to change it to 720p or lower. Not sure how to change that, especially without rooting.

This just happened to me tonight at my daughter's Christmas concert. Quit after 8 min 50 secs. I am test driving a Note 5 and a Nexus 6p. Between this and the mic problems, there's a good chance I'll send the 6p back. I never had this issue with my iPhones, and can't speak to whether the Note would have done it. It's frustrating because I really would have liked to have it all on video.
Likely both devices would have done something similar.. Iphones have in the past.

I decided to do a test. I set it to record and left it alone. It recorded about 31 minutes of video before shutting off. I'm wondering if the camera app quit or if I hit something accidentally during the recording. This may be a case of user error instead of an issue with the device.

Yesterday I also came across this limitation (8 minutoes in 4k video) with Nexus 6P camera but tried the Opencamera app (free) and it got past the 12minutes without problems (and it has more manual control for exposure, focus, bitrate) and after some testing with phone on a tripod I think I'm going to record my kid's X-mas party with bitrate of 20mbps because it uses half the space (I think default is 42mbps) and on a tripod it looks as good as default bitrate.
I've done another test with 20mbps and it stopped at 27mins and 4 seconds, I think file was already 4GB at this point, so maybe I could still get a longer recording time with 15mbps if needed (it is still pretty good quality for a tripod mounted camera)..
I'm not as happy with audio, I thought it was stereo but it's mono and I have the feeling that it is captured with MIC's facing wrong side of the phone... and at this point I have no time left for ordering external MIC's to test (but it should be mono as well, maybe better direction would give better quality in high frequencies - but that has to be next time). For now best option I think is selecting audio source to camcorder (I think it's the one that comes selected as default, but not the option called "default" and I did try to force stereo but file still gets mono audio but I hear high frequencies coming from rear MIC - not as bad as I thought) - I'd love to see an option to capture the audio from the 3 MIC's givving 3 channels audio (good to play on 5.1 systems using center, left and right speakers

Perhaps the flashable zip in the Nexus 6 forums to activate stereo recording would work on the 6P also?

I was looking into the 6p specifically for 4k video so it's good to know about this problem. Sorry I can't offer help though.
When I first picked up my Galaxy s7 Edge on Sprint, I wrote a post about poor quality, lack of stability, and a lot of people told me I was imagining it, or put it down to YouTube. Now watch this...

That is a video I took in FHD60 (i.e. 1080p and 60 frames per second) - skip forward to 8 seconds. Unacceptable isn't the word. I should add, most of the time it's not as bad as this - usually just a really jarring stutter, but it's done this a few times,

From what I've read online in forums, one user claimed that on a live chat , Samsung are refusing to admit it publicly, but there is nothing they can do to improve it. I believe this is a problem mainly with the US Snapdragon 820 chip - but I dunno, it could be an issue with the International version too - either way, I'm not happy but it looks like we have to put up with it.

I believe this is a problem mainly with the US Snapdragon 820 chip - but I dunno, it could be an issue with the International version too - either way, I'm not happy but it looks like we have to put up with it.

Hi Dave,
I have the Snapdragon 820 processor and camera is SONY_IMX260
I've seen pieces online that say the Snapdragon fares worse than the Exynos in terms of performance, so it could be only really noticeable on those phones
Indeed, am no pro snapper so I cannot comment.
But the picture quality has been perfect on my device.
Am going to try this recording on the way home in the car now though (something i have yet to do)
I'll upload to YouTube for you to view if you like.
Any specific settings you used?

It happens with FHD60 most commonly. Panning the camera makes it most notable... that's pretty much it!
Just a question.. you are recording internally or on sdcard?
I don't think there's any way that is a hardware issue. Seems like something is going way wrong with the video recording on the software level - I'd be money it is digital stabilization going haywire. Was that turned off? If so, maybe it's broken.
