I lowered the DPI on my Note 4 (910F) via terminal with
Code:
wm 520
and now on the main screen there's a huge gap between the bottom icons and the apps icons area. same for the apps drawer as you can see in the photos.
I'm not very keen on the idea of installing a launcher. from what I've seen the coords for these areas should be in a file somewhere. does anyone have any ideas?

If you are rooted you can use one of those exposed modules to apply different dpi per apps. Otherwise you cannot re-engineer Samsung apps for different dpi, at least not in an easy manner.
Sent from my mobile device.
yeah, I thought about that. but that's not the ideal situation as the main reasons why I lowered the dpi was so the icons on the home screen and drawer would be smaller and I'd have more room, also so fonts and elements across the system would be smaller. I just think it's a real waste to have a device with such a large screen and everything looking so big. not to mention the fact that it's bad for privacy as any one within a few feet can clearly see what's on the screen.
I'm using a launcher for the time being, but I was hoping I wouldn't have to.

this isn't about whether stock launchers are good or bad. I personally hate TouchWiz because it's too colourful, too childish for my taste. but throwing another launcher on top of it is just not the ideal. when you use a launcher, you're not replacing the stock one. the stock launcher is still running behind the scenes eating up resources as far as I know. so you have to compromise: you either put up with something ugly and not that useful or you lose processing power and consequently battery.
the only reason why I'm sticking with the stock ROM for my Note 4 is because I've tried all S-Pen apps/mods for custom ROMs I could find and none, absolutely not one of them works as well as the one the comes with the phone. and I use that a LOT!
I don't need multi-windows, I don't need fingerprint scanner, I don't even need the camera to be honest. I need the S-Pen to work flawlessly. and until I get that on a CM ROM I have to find a way to deal with my problems with the stock ROM.

try custom stock ROM such as DR.Ketan latest ROM DPI is 560.
Or just root then xposed. What I do with stock rom remove cap and tweak it.

phone is rooted and xposed. I couldn't find a module for the xposed frameword that would handle that. I'm not sure now as I've read through so many threads my memory is a bit scrambled at this point, but I think the guy who created XTouchWiz said he would not take requests. I think if anyone knew about this setting it would be him, I'm thinking about PM'ing him.
on a note, I am a developer and I find it very unlikely that the width and height for those areas would be hardcoded.

Different custom ROMs sometimes come with themes you can flash. If you're not rooted, you're not going to be able to apply a theme anyway.

Unless you mean something like a custom Launcher. I use KJY's ROM but I have ADW launcher EX running on my tab. If I can recall correctly I think its the only custom launcher that has honeycomb support. With it I can change the icons to whatever I like (but your home, back and task switcher buttons will always look the same unless you download one of KJY;s themes, which are pretty slick).

Alright 2 launchers, but ADW is a little more affordable. I know the other launchers work too, but most of them you can't get from the market because they are deemed "incompatible", you will have to get them from other sources.
ADW actually has a tablet interface. I have attached a screen shot of it.

Adw has a crap load of themes and you can download these to spice up any theme.

That's what Android is all about right? Choice
I am currently using the SPB Shell 3D. I do really like it. I would however love to have the Go Launcher. That's what I use on my phone and I love it. I don't have any reason aside from themes to root my Iconia, so I won't. I think the Go Launcher and ADW Launcher are about the best options for theming for now.
i have adw launcher ex but I was talking about different flashable theme with a whole new look with different fonts and buttons colors etc...
Yea agreed but I wish go launcher tablet would be available cuz the current version lags during screen transition and after about an hour of use it asked about my resolution in which case it changes it to tiny mode with icons the size of half of the original .. I think every launcher development team is now seeing that tablets tegra 2 10.1 are dropping in price so more people are picking them up before they are discontinued for new tegra 3 devices.

My Initial Thoughts
Well I'm extremely annoyed - I was promised a few bugs (OP) and there are none! Drat! I wiped everything within an inch of it's life, then flashed the ROM followed by inverted gapps. I have not had one force close, no burps, no screen flicker, nada, nothing bad in 6 hours of heavy running.
This ROM is as smooth as , well, teflon - easily the equal of any CM10 I have tried. I noted with pleasure the toggles and particularly the "put the screen to sleep toggle" (I like to save mechanical switches whenever possible) and I can never understand why other devs don't include this very simple toggle.
Truth is, I will be using this as my DD on my GTP3113 - I'm not sure that any significant improvement is warranted.
Thanks much to hjkr and the original dev for this great piece of work.

This rom is really nice. I flashed the inverted gapps and after several hours of steady use I haven't even had a stutter. Kangorade was the very first rom I flashed on this tab and this is the only one I've used since with this many features. Amazing job guys. Best alpha ever...
Sent from my GT-P3113 using XDA Premium HD app
Only major issue I had when I first flashed it was, Superuser was having problems allowing permissions and it froze up once or twice and had to do a hard reboot. But it seems to have settled in now and is playing nice. Froze up a few times initially when using some apps as well Maybe it was a bad flash from AOKP ? who knows ....
Really Impressed with it so far , nice to mess about with and customise that little bit more than you can with AOKP. Pretty cool you can edit build.props ( even though i use Rom Toolbox to do it , but a good feature to have none the less).Themes work well on the ROM.
Apex in landscape is a blessing !!!! Customisable settings menu as well . For the first build its pretty damn good , will be my ROM of choice that's for sure.Cant wait for the next builds to be released.
Only thing that i can fault is when you install an app and the icon is added automatically to your home page it seems to be cut off at the bottom , but deleting the icon and adding it from the app drawer again remedies that problem ( anyone else have that ?) Not sure it that's a problem with Apex as I'm using a theme on it with custom Icons.
On the navigation bar when you add new icons they show as "reflected " in the selection menu but don't seem to work in reality , but I'm making some new ones that you can add pretty much exactly the same as the ones in the ROM with a reflection, anyone wants them send me PM and i will send them over.Got a few more to do but wont take that long.
Apart from that its a sweet ROM ! Loving it big time

Hey everyone,
I didn't want to be disrespectful and post in a developers thread specific to a custom firmware, nor CM, so I wanted to start this thread to get some input. There are a lot of great roms out, ARHD among others, which are modifications of the default stock Samsung firmware.
There is also the possibility to run the latest version of Android in stock AOSP by using Cyanogenmod 10.1.
Historically I have always used CM10.1 or AOKP on my devices as I switch frequently, and they have become the "brands" I know, and I like how it is not bloated. However, on buying my Note I thought it might be worth checking out stock based firmwares, especially for the IR blaster which doesn't work in CM10.1.
Has anyone here alternated between them? What made you switch to one or the other? I'm curious to get some input from others on why they made the decision they did specifically for this device.
Thanks!
EDIT: It seems most of the note features work fine in CM10.1 as well - are there any other things I am missing out on if I go CM10.1, other than the IR Blaster? I'm sure it is just a novelty that will get old quick, but still. Given I haven't used stock extensively I am not sure if I am missing out on anything else.
There are plenty of threads like this around.. I prefer stock because of the IR blast and mulit window feature.. also stock is louder with the noozxoide mod.. The reasons for CM10 is More customization, its faster than stock, Themes, and its 4.2...
Thanks - if you have links to the others I would like to give them a read, but I couldn't find any direct comparisons on XDA, especially for this tablet. The most I found was a "what firmware do you use" for the SGS2.
Im not about to look for them but here is 1...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2226379
Im not sure if cyanogenmod support the small apps ( dual or cascade ) . Im using custom stock fimware on my sgn10.1 such as Android Revolution HD, to fully use the advantage of multitasking.
But for my old handphone, I prefer cyanogenmod. You know why.
I would stick with stock. I think the cm team does agreat job but when it comes to my note 10.1 they lack ,there is something very buggy about them when it comes to 2d and 3d rendering this is the one thing I have noticed that are not based off stock roms. Things like sketch book video playback and gaming seem to fluctuate in fps but try it out and see for your self, other then that cm is a great

This is what makes the Note 10.1 so special... Even the ICS rom it came with out of the box was close to what I wanted and needed. People only started complaining when others were getting JB and they weren't.
Add root access Samsung and it would be (almost) perfect - there's always something you want or need that won't be in the stock rom.
So saying, I'm still gonna play around with custom roms too... Never being satisfied and chasing perfection is part of being human, that's why XDA was created....
Stock is the best... !

I am quite pleased with it once I ran the compatibility pack and battery mod (%). It runs quite well and I have no complaints, other than a rather bulky notification pull-up bar. Performance is pretty good. As another poster indicated, though, there is a slight delay when switching between apps using the pop-up menu. Battery life seems a bit better after a few days usage too.

I own many different tabblets, on this one its perfect out of the box, no wifi, no sod, no market or any other weird problems. when you do get one that runs fine then your battery drains fast. Always a trade off, so I go with stock and no root. Seems root is causing problems and now no root and no problems.

well, i'd rather use the stock rom than the CM, i have tried the CM10.1 but you know, the Multi Windows and hand writing and the IR blaster had been missed, so, after all, i have to go back to stock rom, ít' simply, a bit slower but, well, it come with full features

I´m sorry if this has been posted before - but I can´t stand the fact, that Samsung shows such a massive effort for software optimizations and special functions, which CLEARLY are pushing the Note III to the top of every smartphone list - while, at the same time, STILL messing around with the restricted grid system in TW.
How can ANYBODY (that keeps an eye on the smartphone market and on the success of alternative launchers) think that a 4x4 grid (- on such a big device with such a great resolution -) is a good idea, looks good, feels good, makes sense or simply is a good choice??
I hate the restriction in general - it shouldn´t be that a problem to simply integrate a "free choice" function into the almighty TW. But hey, you Samsung guys...a 4x4? really?? I even used a 6x7 grid on my S3.
Sorry, perhaps it´s just my mood...

no, you are right. They have had this problem from the first note. Someone in their R&D department isn't doing their job properly or someone higher up is screwing with us. With samsung's resources, it really shouldn't be that hard to let us customize the launcher through some secret menu or something.
If you're talking about the launcher then simply install Apex or Nova. That's the first thing I do with a new phone. I can't remember the last time I saw a native TouchWiz launcher.
10x7
I've been using a 10 (+1) x 7 grid on my Note 1 w/Nova and I am already happy for the extra row I will be able to add on the taller screen of the III (this is going to be my 4S to 5 moment )

I've been using a 10 (+1) x 7 grid on my Note 1 w/Nova and I am already happy for the extra row I will be able to add on the taller screen of the III (this is going to be my 4S to 5 moment )

Jesus..looks like someone spilled a bag of apps on your screen.
I always replace the launchers. Just for the gestures alone. Swiping up or down or even more complex gestures for actions etc.
Im pretty sure some ROMS offer custom row densities on TW.

No. It looks even worse than apple's implementation of the launcher. Scattered.
4x4 yuck!
i hope someone figure out the knox system without voiding your warranty. i've been itching for custom rom on my to-be note 3!

Holy crap man, do you really use all that on the daily? There is an app drawer. Different folks, different strokes I guess.

4x4 works for me on my Note 2 ... you can put multiple apps into a folder. I don't see why Samsung can't offer a denser layout for those that need or want it.
Do you lose any Touchwiz functionality by installing a different launcher from the Play Store?
I suspect the 4x4 launcher was VERIZON'S doing.

can this be a thing. Like the blame obama meme but now we blame verizon for everything?
Here is my 8x9 grid on the 4 inch Galaxy S. This translates to an 11x13 grid on the note 3's 5.7 inch.
I really like this icon size. It's perfect for the size of the fingertip.
This way I only have one launcher pane and I don't need to swipe left and right.

Apex. Its maximum is 10x10.
Nova can do 16x16 through some secret taps.
I'm hoping Apex gets its maximum increased by the time I get my note 3, as I like it better than nova.

I understand the need for many icons guys but to go from 4x4 to 10x10? d know... really in your desktop pc's you have a ton of things in your desktop? Anyway im other school guy.. i want it clean and organised with folders.

Normally no. However this version swiping up launches the magazine app.
But like I said most custom launchers have a custom swiping feature. So you can make a swipe up down double tap etc do almost anything you want . apex and nova are the most popular.

UPDATED: Matched the resolution of the Galaxy S5
I was given at work a Galaxy S4 and love how great it's screen is. So I started to look into replicating the screen resolution of our Grand to match the S4. I was amazed on how much better it can be. I did see a thread in here in which using a list of apps and hacks it can be done, but I have found a simple app and launcher that can serve as a simple 1 - 2 process.
I will briefly state what I have done and the results and as time progresses (due to my lack of spare time) I will post pics and a more thorough guide.

This is the configuration Samsung should have used on our devices! The quality is crisp, resembles more that Galaxy Note series in which more info is available on our screens.
REQUEST: I will be looking into Modding the Google Experience Launcher in order to fix icon problems. But I also have a temporary solution for that. I remember seeing some apk's of different Google Launcher with screen resolutions around, but I cant find them now. If you know a fix, please chime in.
THIS MOD IS FOR ROOTED DEVICES, I'm currently running this mod on COSMIC CM 4.4.4
- The first thing you will need is a simple app from the Play Store called texdroider_dpi. Once installed, set the 'New Dpi" to 220, 'Apply', then Reboot. Immediately see throught the user interface how things seems to fit our screens better, text is more easily read, and in my case, it might be a placebo effect, but things seem to even load better.
Download: texdroider Play Store
- Since the launcher is for mdpi devices, the icons on the Google Launcher will look a bit blurred and out of proportions. Since I havent taken the time to tweak for this, I went ahead and tried several launchers. Perhaps other will do, but for now I am using the ASUS ZenUI Launcher. It seems to keep the icons at proper resolutions

UPDATE: I am testing different launchers, ranging from the Yahoo! Aviate to a Galaxy S5 launcher.
Now the Galaxy Grand will have the resolution of the Galaxy S5. Enjoy.
I promise to better the thread in a matter of hours and days, but in the mean time, give it a go.
nice piece of work....big difference...

I know! I wish i knew this from the past. I am now testing some new launchers, I like Yahoo! Aviate because if it's simplicity and how it creates a 'page' per activity (music, morning, work, etc), and several others like Everything Me (kinda complicated) which don't distort the icons.
I will update soon my findings.
