So I usually can figure out just about anything. But I can't find an app to turn my screen off without using the power button to save it without it requiring me to enter a pin after I use my finger print.
I am currently using Nova Launcher with the Double Tap to turn the screen off and it too requires a pin on unlock. Is there any work around this?
I'm using Stock+ by Tupac4u, not the N Preview.
Thanks!

I went through that too. Greenify has a setting that allows holding the home button to shut the screen off that works without a PIN to unlock. Some kernels have a swipe navbar feature that can be turned on with ex kernel manager. But currently I am using Ressurection Remix which allows programming long presses on the navbar. I believe Pure Nexus has a built in setting like this also.
GMD GestureControl (play store) works fine (root)
You guys are the BEST! Thanks a Lot!

Use the root option built into Nova. It will turn the screen off without locking it.
I'm using Nova's double tap to run a Tasker task to run a shell command "input key event 26" to turn the screen off. Then Franco Kernel's double tap to wake option to turn the screen back on.

Why just why the complications... in Nova launcher you got double tap to screen lock option and once you do the same first time.. it asks for the normal method and root.. with root you don't see the pin or pattern screen.. with normal you do...
If you are rooted you should be good to go with that..

whenever i want to unlock my phone with my fingerprint, i HAVE to enter my pattern. Is this normal? can i make it so i can fully unlock my phone just using my fingerprint?
nope.. not normal. You should be able to awaken the phone screen and unlock it all with just your fingerprint.
This the opposite of normal........

Do you have a work Exchange policy setup on your phone?
If you are waking phone fingerprint should work. If phone was off then yoi will need Pin plus fingerprint.

Yes, the first time after a reboot if you use fingerprint to unlock it will still say "PIN required after reboot" or something to that effect. Otherwise it should wake and go right to your home screen every time.
Found the problem. Nova launcher. The launcher worked great with my s6 but not with my 6p. Ive noticed a lot of bugs like the notification shade scrolling down really slowly and this problem where it asks for a passcode /pin/pattern after unlocking with a fingerprint. See how it shows the lock icon instead of the fingerprint icon
oh well. i guess nova isnt too compatible with marshmallow. thanks for your help guys
Ive been having this problem on my 6p as well. It just randomly asks for my pin instead of my fingerprint. Going to try using something other than nova launcher for a bit and see if that helps.
-Edit, tried using google launcher for awhile, fingerprint works all the time now. That means that its a problem with Nova Launcher for now.

There are a few paid apps that will give you back the double tap to lock. I am using gravity screen...it fixes the double tap to close, although there is a 5 second delay before you can try your finger after you double tap..I will try to find the link, but there is a thread about this issue already.

no its not the nova launcher. I got my 6p yesterday and I'm using google now launcher. every now and then it asks for pattern lock when I attempt to use the fingerprint scanner. don't what's wrong.
I tried nova launcher with tap to sleep app, but every time reopen the phone it will require me to enter the password again.
I think this is a new marshmallow feature. If a third party app locks phone, it requires password. What happens if you manually lock or let time out.

Screen Lock Pro by Prahallad has a setting to bypass security. There is a free app by the same Dev but I haven't tried it.
Once installed you can link Nova's double tap setting to it.

This ^.
It's the only app I've found that doesn't cause the pin lock screen to show the next time you unlock.

Hi
Thanks for the pointer, I tried the free version of the app, and setup my Nova's double-tap gesture to use Screen Lock shortcut, I am able to lock the screen but unable to wakeup w/ a fingerprint. Is there something special you had to do?
Thanks in advance

Does this app really lock the phone or it just shutdown the screen until the phone unlock itself on its own?

It just turn the screen black until it lock itself. Takes about 3-4s. I know the developer wrote there 10s but it only takes 3-4s on s7e. You know it when the AOD comes on etc etc...
As of now, from what I can tell there is no way to use an app or double tap to lock the screen without requiring a pin for a non rooted phone. Apps that turn off the screen but don't lock the phone isn't really an answer.

It is an answer though. You just have to tweak the settings in the security section so the phone locks immediately. There is still a 2 sec delay but to get to lock the screen with a double tap again and get to unlock with touch ID it's fine. It costs a little over $3 though.... which isn't much but is on the steep side for such a single purpose app. There is a marshmallows touch ID workaround setting in it as explained which merely turns the display blank (although for me the edge thing is still visible) then after a really short delay the screen actually turns off and AOD turns on. With the system settings set right it actually locks securely the moment AOD turns on. Max 2 sec delay. No one's gonna get a chance to get in your phone that quick.:good:
So, I did come across this same issue, and it seemed to have started for me when I applied the May Security Update. It happened on my Note 5 and my S7 Edge. But when I applied the July security patch to my Note 5, double tap to lock WITHOUT a pin next login actually worked again, not so on my S7 Edge, after applying. Havent had enough time to research and dig, but doesn't make sense working on 1 and not the other when both are 6.01, both on July security patch, both Verizon models, and both use Nova Prime. Has had me stumped since May....
Sorry. Original post placed in forum for wong device.
Before today's update, I was running Nova with double tap set to the app screen off and lock. This allowed me to double tap the home screen to shut the screen off and lock the phone (I prefer this to clicking the power button). After the update, I can still do this, but it will no longer work with fingerprint unlock. If I try unlocking the screen using fingerprint, it forces the pattern unlock. Does anyone know a way to fix this?
Thanks.

It's a Marshmellow thing and was like that before the update (at least there were many reports of it, I don't use that feature of Nova).

I'm not familiar with that, but it was definitely working for me before the update. It's not really a Nova feature; Nova just supplies the double tap gesture function which can be used for anything. I think it has something to do with lock screen security, but nothing I tried worked. Thanks anyways.

It's a Marshmellow thing, not a Nova thing. It doesn't work on 6p, or 5x, or any other variant of the s7. Or with any other apps that lock the screen. Seems like it may have been a fluke if it worked on yours. It has to do with the apis for smart lock and Google's fingerprint api.

Same thing with me. The update messed mine up as well. I use this app now with Nova double tap and its working good. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iwashisoft.screenoff&hl=en
It doesn't lock the screen it just turns it off but it will lock when the setting you have it set for times out. I have mine at 30 seconds.

I use a different tap to lock screen and it now makes me use the pattern all the time. If I use the power switch and wait the 30 seconds the fingerprint works. Try that and see if it works not using Nova.
It is third party lock/screen off apps that cause the enter pattern always function.

Thanks for the reply, but it works now. You just have to use a different app that turns the screen off but does not lock it. With the new app, the phone will lock itself after a few seconds and then I can use fingerprint properly when I turn it back on.
Installed the update from last night, after the phone rebooted the recent and back capacitive buttons are not working. I just did the repair software tool with verizon and that didn't fix it. Crazy...
Maybe I'm just overlooking something obvious - but is there a way (other than the button on the back) to turn off the primary display??
I have figured out that i can double tap to wake. But haven't figured out bow to turn off.
Disregard. Found out that i can double tap status bar for knock on feature to turn off.

Yes - this is what i use now. Will take some getting used to, but seems easy enough to adjust to.
I'm using Nova Prime and double tap on and off work fine. No need to use notification bar to tap off here. I can double tap any empty spot on any screen and it will turn off.
If it doesn't work like that for you - must be something else.
1. Do you have Nova Prime, or Free?
2. Do you use live wallpaper?

This does work. I use the stock launcher. There's just not a lot of open real estate on my home screen. Also doesnt work outside of home screen (that I've noticed). So status bar has been OK.
When XPOSED eventually comes to Nougat there was an option in some of the old G3/G4 Tweakboxes (which ran on the G5, V10, etc) to double tap the navigation bar as well as the status bar.
I got very accustom to that so hopefully that will become an option in the future as well.
For now, I am using Nova Prime Double tap to run a tasker task that executes a shell command (as root) to emulate the power button press. This will turn off the display and still allow you to wake it back up with the fingerprint sensor since other methods make use of the device administrator and require a pin/password/knock-code to unlock.

HI all,
I am a new user of MI A1 device. i purchased it a week back and started using the stock android interface.
My question to forum is as follows:
Is there any app which locks the screen without using the power button?
Most of the app present in play store asks for the administrative rights which makes the finger print scanner to stop functioning.
Kindly suggest one good app which does the lock screen functionality without asking for administrative rights and which is light in size.
thanks in advance
Shri
Why would you want that?
I am using Nova launcher with gesture up for this. For using it with fingerprint unlock you have to have root and enable "root screen off method" in Nova launcher. Then it works flawlessly and you don't have to reach for power button anymore.
If you don't want to use Nova launcher, you can achieve same result with Tasker or similar app with shell command run as root "input keyevent 26".
