In need of a little guidance - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So today I went out and got me a Note T-mobile Note 4 off CL. The jackhole I bought it from forgot to mention the phone was modded but anyways that's Craigslist right? [emoji16] so I went and tried to factory reset which took me to a screen I believe is a custom recovery but want to verify. There was no SU or any root apps installed. Since I was going to mod phone anyway I'm not too worried but would like an Idea of what should do as far as updating/changing since I'm new to Samsung forums. Attached pic of recovery and my about phone. Any help much appreciated!

that's the stock recovery.
if you want to root it look into TWRP and CF autoroot, or a custom rom if you want that :good:

Cool, that's what I was trying to verify I just didn't want to start following any guide not knowing if a custom or stock recovery was installed. I do get the
'Kernel is not seandroid enforcing'
'Set warranty bit: Kernel'
Message when I start the phone and in bootloader Knox count shows 1. Also Knox app keeps FC every time I start the device. My whole question here is since I know the device has been messed w but don't know exactly what they did to get it bk to stock, would it be better for me to get it bk to 100% stock and start over and avoid a brick? If so should I do it through kies?

I see that Knox has already been tripped, however if you're going to I stall a port or custom ROM, it's better IMO to drop anything related to Knox anyways. Are you planning to install TWRP and CFAutoroot?
Developers don't need no stinkin' signature!

Yes the plan is definitely to root and custom recovery so I can flash other stuff. The reason I ask if I should just reset via kies is because the phone is extremely laggy so I just don't know what exactly the prev owner did. This way I would just start w a clean slate. Do you recommend?

since you want to root and such...
look for TWRP, flash that so you have a custom recovery
look for SuperSu and flash that so you have root, or download and flash a rom that you want.

[Q] Factory reset MF3 but still shows unlocked

My friend accidentally took MF3 update while rooted, update installed successfully but now "custom padlock" is showing every time the phone boots which I believe is preventing him to connect to out corporate MDM.
We've tried factory reset from the OS as well as from stock recovery. Is there any other way to go back to 100% stock?
I surely like to know this as well......

^^ odin wont work because we dont have a MF3 odin package and we cant downgrade to MDL due to the efuse. If he still has residual busybox or su binaries in his /system partition, that would trigger the unlocked bootscreen. In that case, i am afraid he might be stuck till someone figures out how to root MF3 or we get an MF3 ODIN package.
This may or may not work but try installing a superuser app from market and see if yo have root. If yes, then switch to superSU and update binary. Reboot a couple of times and the custom screen should be gone. If not, download a root browser and delete busybox and su binaries and reboot a couple of times.
If none of the above works, take it to att store and play dumb. See if they will reflash bone stock MF3 firmware for you!
Good luck!

How can any one give a solution to an issue without knowing which device the OP is talking about? Not all devices are the same, is it an att i337m which is bootloader unlocked. Odin back to stock, root, and run triangle away, follow the online instructions, it will remove the padlock..

It does. As i said before, your only option at this point i think is to try and install supersu and see if you still have functioning root. If yes, you can use triangle away and the custom screen thread in general section to get rid of it and then unroot.
If root is not functional, download any root browser and see if you have busybox or su in /system/bin or /system/xbin (you can view the files without root using root explorer i think). If those files are there then you can not get rid of them at this point. You have to wait for someone to figure out a way to root MF3.
In any case, some ppl around here have had the custom screen come up on a bone stock never rooted phone. So you can go to the att store and say that it just came up and play dumb. (make sure you uninstall all apps that need root) If they check the /system partition for signs of root, you are screwed but if they just go ahead and reflash the full firmware, it will solve your problem.

can someone advise please?

Hi
I have a new galaxy s4 on contract (unrooted, stock). I would like to try out some of the custom roms from this forum.
This will affect my warranty, counter etc.
I can use the Rom Manager app to take a backup of my system as it is now, If I need to take my galaxy s4 back to the store for
repairs etc., would a restore of this Rom Manager backup leave the phone EXACTLY as it was when I got it? including rom counter etc?
Would it also work on Kies? (I haven't used Kies yet but I understand that it recognises that a phone has been rooted / had custom
roms applied.
thank you

You have to flash custom recovery in order to flash custom rom, it means that your binary counter will increase, you can run triangle away if you have I9505 with no new firmware, then flash your stock rom before send it to warranty

Hi samersh72
thanks for the quick reply. Sorry but I'm not clear on it.
Are you saying that after flashing custom rom(s) I cannot reset the phone by restoring the Rom Manager backup I took before flashing custom roms? Why is that?
If that's the case:
I think triangle away on the gs4 only works on stock roms? Does that mean that to reset the phone I would have to flash stock rom first and then run triangle away?
Would the flashing / triangle away also remove root?
firbolg
Sir you have a lot of reading to do. Have a look in the stick thread section for guides, tutorials and explanations. There are new security measures that will render your phone out of warranty with no way of returning it to stock condition. Read well.

1) root
2) flash custom recovery
3) make the nandroid backup for your stock firmware.
4) play with custom roms
5) restore your stock firmware, run triangle away, unroot, send it to warranty.
triangle away does not remove root. unroot by flashing stock.
PS. triangle away does not run on new firmwares. MH8, 6, GG ...
avoid flashing them at this moment. once flashed, you can not downgrade due to the locked bootloader

[ROOT SUCCESS+ GT-N7100 [Leaked firmware] N7100XXUEMJ5 (JB 4.3) - Open Asia (OLB)

I managed to get root, and with the help of the KNOX Disabler app, I disabled Knox nonsense, using RootExplorer, deleted the Knox files from /system/apps folder.
You need to flash Philz_touch_5.15.0-n7100.tar.md5 recovery, reboot. Switch off phone. Start phone in recovery mode. Flash CWM-SuperSu-v0.99.zip in Philz_touch_5.15.0-n7100.tar.md5.
Restart phone and run previously installed KNOX Disabler. I downloaded and installed the version 1.0.1.

I did not care about Knox warranty, however following your question I went into download mode. This is what I see:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: GT-N7100
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: Yes (12 counts)
CURRENT BINARY: Custom
SYSTEM STATUS: Custom
WARRANTY BIT: 0
That is all the information at present. I hope this answers your question.

Sorry--but this is a bit ambiguous--
"Flash CWM-SuperSu-v0.99.zip in Philz_touch_5.15.0-n7100.tar.md5."
I follow that we Flash CWM-Supersu-v.0.99. zip in Philz Recovery[which we have previously flashed to device with ODIN]--but what is the tar.md5 bit about--surely we don't reflash Philz in ODIN, again--or, are you simply referring to the, now, on board, CWM Recovery?
Not trying to be a 'smart-alec' just not following.
be a smart user and assume that he just copy paste the previous line because he dont want to retype the recovery name.
Hey, @YOSEFE, just another question--which ROM were you using before you Flashed this latest leak?
Reason I'm asking is that, I am currently on Dr.Ketan's 'hybrid' ROM which is a mix of XXMI6, and XXMJ2 plus mods taken from latest Note3 firmwares--and, it's great with many things not available to standard Note 2.
I would like your opinion of this latest leak firmware, XXUEMJ5, and how it compares--presumably it doesn't have any of the fancy Note 3 'gizmos'???
But, is it fast, smooth, clean, not buggy. etc....
BTW I'm not saying that Dr. K's ROM is not super fast, smooth, clean, etc...in fact it's excellent but, just wanting a comparison, to see if there was any good reason to Flash it.

Philz Recovery will have already been flashed by others, however I mention it because there will be those who have not flashed anything past the firmware or ROM.
If CWM Recovery works for anyone that is fine too, but I have flashed Philz Recovery on advice somewhere in a thread. (Lazy me, can't say which thread).

I was on XXMI6. The ROM can be a bit laggy. As someone pointed out to me, it is only a test firmware. Nevertheless, it is smooth enough for my daily use.
There are obviously no Note 3 goodies on the ROM. If those are very important to you, and considering the amount of trouble you have gone through to flash Doc's ROM, I would say keep Doc's ROM.

You are too late in responding to this.
That method you refer to was one of the two or so of available means. Since then, Chainfire has released superuser version that incorporates a disabler or uninstaller.

Anyone know how to get rid of that "custom" logo on bootup?

So, I have the MF3 firmware and wanted to update it to the latest version. I backed up my phone, went to settings->Accounts->Backup and Reset->Factory Data Reset
I wiped my phone and after all that, it still has the custom logo. What can I do to get rid of the custom logo so I can update my phone? Any help you guys can give me would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have the S4, Because I have MF3 firmware, I've been pretty careful to avoid doing any sort of custom flashing to avoid bricking my phone (since they locked the bootloader). Do I have to use ODIN to reset the custom status? And are there any significant risks to the phone if I do it this way? I'm aware anytime you mess with these kind of things, there is some risk, I just want to know it should be safe, it's been tested before, and I'm not just rolling the dice and hoping for the best.

Using TriangleAway app might brick ur phone and it might affect our phone, if u try it and it is Hard Brick and thats will be a problem over there.
Hard Brick and Soft Brick are different
Hard Brick is your phone is dead can't turn to recovery or download mode and you need to change ur motherboard
Soft Brick is usually just when you're phone is stuck in a bootloop, and as the name implies, is caused by a software error, usually the lack of a system to boot from or some other minor software bug that glitching boot. They are easily fixable by reflashing your ROM in recovery.

http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SGH-I337/ATT/
All I found for firmware is MDL and MDB. I'm on MF3 but I'm not sure which of these I can use. Would I want to use one of these two? Or would I want to use the TAR files from this location?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2504311
I just want to make sure you know that the MF3 version has a locked bootloader, so if I can't do this with a locked bootloader, I probably need to know sooner rather than later. Thanks for your help!

Since you want to update the phone, you can directly flash the latest using odin. It will remove the custom logo too. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2926642
I have used triangle away on my phone (ATT S4) multiple times and have never seen any issue

Bah, I just following the guide to flash my phone back to stock:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2504311
I boot it up and it STILL shows it as a custom ROM. What am I doing wrong? Why would it still say it's custom?

I had done that. I did finally get it working after resetting it a few times. No idea why that is though . . . Hopefully, I'll get those OTA updates soon so I can go back to enjoying my phone. I hate stock so much and don't see much point in making many changes since I'm going to just reload everything via titanium backup once it's all updated.
Thanks for your help!

Just got the Telus sm-g900w8 - Want to be 100% sure before i root it

Hi Everyone,
I just got the sm-g900w8 model of the Samsung Galaxy S5 from TELUS (Canada)
Is this "kltecan" ? Where can i confirm that
I've had some issues with lag and wanted to give a pure stock/AOSP rom a try
I'm experienced with modding android phones but i'm new to the samsung space
Before i brick my phone, i wanted to be 100% sure that i can follow this thread with the model i'm using
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2699648
That will give me root and recovery
Will i need to use Odin to flash everything or can i unlock the bootloader and use fastboot/recovery
is there any benefit to TWRP over CWM? I've been using TWRP for a while and want to continue using it...
Then what AOSP rom can i try out?
I see forums for each of the american mobile providers but dont know which one in particular would be best suited for Telus and/or g900w8
Thanks!!
Just found the CF-auto-root specific to the sm-g900w8
http://download.chainfire.eu/406/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-kltecan-kltevl-smg900w8.zip
So:
1. boot into download mode on the s5 (turn off phone, then hold VolDown+Home+Power to boot)
2. plug it into my windows machine
3. manually install the drivers
4. open odin.exe (included in cf auto root zip)
5. select the cf-auto-root.tar.md5 file in the PDA section of odin and tell it to flash
on a successful flash, the phone should reboot automatically
let it boot up to normal android, and i should have root
to flash twrp i follow the above steps again but now select hte md5 for the twrp recovery instead
correct?
bump!!
Oh canada. How I feel for it's users. Silly variants stopping users from the main draw of android, roms and mods! If I lived there I'd buy imports
lol its just samsung and their weird hardware deployments

That's why flashing the sprint 5.0 leak is working so well for people, is it, or does that g900 not count towards the 'anything' as you claim? Its great that you want to pipe up with incorrect information and look like a jerk off in multiple threads, but you're still wrong. So quit making Canadians look like assholes, and quit giving advice that will fu(k peoples phones. Hit the search tab for once, maybe even read a thread or two, and find out what happens when you flash the wrong boot loader for the wrong device.
Bye 0x0

So from my quick google search, the 0x0 comes up after root and is some kind of warranty flag?
any way to restore it back?
EDIT: the 0x0 flag turns to a 0x1 once the phone is rooted. Some people apparently have been able to keep the 0x0 flag after using towelroot?

Once the Knox warranty bit has been tripped, there is currently no known way to reset it. There are root methods that don't trip Knox, but I've not yet actually rooted my S5, so won't advise specifics on that one. You will want to look for 'no Knox trip' or some such thing if the warranty issue concerns you.

Good to know thanks
See, this is why i made this thread!
Wait, so now i have to re-ask, but i assume that simply going to https://towelroot.com/ and downloading the APK will work for my model correct?
android 4.4.2 as well i believe
And if so, obviously i dont need to use Odin to flash the cf-auto-root anymore!
but i still need to use odin to flash TWRP
root must be done first?
Or can i flash TWRP without root?

Sorry dude I can't help with that knowledge. I haven't done it and don't want to give bad advice. I do know that towelroot is only supported up to a specific firmwares. (Example: nf1)

Flashing TWRP will trip Knox as well, if you need to keep knox 0x0 then there are threads helping you to keep it that way, but you will always be jumping through hoops to keep it that way and be some what limited to what you can do.

Use instructions step 8,
Here's a link to my folder on my google drive just use the most recent files.

You can use any ROM that is ktle. Im currently using cm 14 in the unified android thread. If you want something more stable but like cyanogenmod then go with the cm 13 in the albinoman thread. I use the smaller version of gapps like nano.

Thanks but I figured it out why I was getting that error.
I had to go to settings>security>reactivation lock and unchecked reactivation lock...
